    One thing I forgot to mention is that YOU SHOULD TEST ON LADDER! Only playing against friends isn't a good way to test, since it won't give you a complete view of the tier. You can and should test with friends (especially when testing bad matchups) but your primary source of testing data should be the ladder on Showdown.

  • @CodeMilkMan
    @CodeMilkMan Před 5 měsíci +27

    I think the "during testing" portion of this video is extremely important. Everything you've said is spot on and I find myself trying to put atleast one niche but effective mon on my teams all the time. It's also one of the reasons why I like running sticky webs because it enables some slighty slow (for OU standards) powerhouse pokemon that lay dormant in UU to be extremely viable.

    • @Gold_Gamer_100
      @Gold_Gamer_100 Před 5 měsíci

      If possible, can you give an example? I'm trying to learn how to make playable teams, and would appreciate some advice

    • @CodeMilkMan
      @CodeMilkMan Před 5 měsíci

      @@Gold_Gamer_100 For example, A niche but effective mon that I put on one of my teams recently was Hydreigon. Normally this mon is quite subpar when it comes to surviving OU as it fears the faster pivots like cinderace, booster energy mons and fighting types, all of which are very common in OU. For base 98 speed it still will most likely be moving slower than these dangerous mons and wont have a chance have time to effectively get a nasty plot or threaten another mon.
      However, looking at the good sides we can see it has the fantastic ability levitate which grants ground immunity. It has decent bulk being 90/90 for defense/special defense. Since it has levitate, only stealth rocks can hurt it on switch in and it doesn't do a lot of damage. You can tera ghost and completely shut down great tusk or some variants of extremekilling dragonite. You can tera poison and suddenly your only threat are psychic moves. If you have sticky web support that means those booster energy mons cant outspeed your earth powers, flash cannons, draco meteors or dark pulses. You can even take it a step further and add substitute + nasty plot and with solid prediction you can make a lot of space at the cost of being tied to two moves. With web support you also are suddenly faster than dragapult which was a huge threat and you can figure out if it's infliltrator/cursed body or clear body immediately and know what to do next.
      Now in terms of making it fit on a team, Ribombee is what i consider extremely useful for controlling the speed issue so I'll start there. Next is making sure to have atleast multiple checks to enemy teams. I need webs up to be viable so I'll need a Gholdengo to stop their spins/defog. But gholdengo is weak to cinderace and the team is special heavy now, so I need physical walls such as Dondozo/Garchomp/Lando-T who can tank moved and dish out some damage. If I need immediate power i have to add a banded mon like a rillaboom or zamazenta. But lets all say you fuck up, which can happen from time to time, you need something you can fall back on such as a Kingambit/Walking Wake/Dragonite ect.
      In this example, the team would be Ribombee, Hydreigon, Gholdengo, Zamazenta, Dondozo, Kingambit. From there it's testing and adjusting your team to figure out what threats you find common and knowing your answers.

    Not gonna lie, one of the most frustrating things to building teams in OU is trying to cover for dark/fairy spam in this tier especially in King. I look at Kingambit in the builder and I despise it 😂 and it's the same way with Ghold too. Hopefully DLC 2 won't make me look at Kingambit checks/ Valiant checks/ or Ghold checks as a necessity. At least the lower tiers are fun af to play though. Don't have to think as much there building wise.

      @RocketPropelledMexican Před 5 měsíci +1

      Yeah one of the constraints with current balance team building is that whatever you use to check Kingambit can get sat on by Ghold. It's the reason why GT is so popular, it's practically the only option that can kinda do both - but you run into cases like needing a switchin on a Ghold with tera available that doesn't have balloon popped etc.

      At that point in the ladder attacking whats in front of you is really important. Try not to overthink and make plays all the time. Its a big trap. Play safe the first few turns, get a feeling of whether your opponent makes loads of reads or none at all. Can make it so easy to know what they'll do

      The thing is that nowadays good Pokemon fill so many roles at the same time thanks to Terastalization that it's hard to find the right pick. Also the meta completely changes from month to month, or even 2 weeks, so bad teams can become good and vice-versa. It's takes too much time imo. All this to say teambuilding is way too complex in gen 9 OU (and less rewarding) compared to other gens
