With May, you could use Raichu to set up thunder armor on Swellow
How dare you bring up that sacrilege XD I remember going on such a rant between that and Yugioh about game accuracy from anime and it almost turned me off of both
Well, it COULD thunder wave to active it’s guts, but it’d be better to just use flame orb.
@D Rock Well I do, and for once, the anime obviously doesn't follow the game rules.
But that event in that episode is certainly based on the actual Guts boost of Swellow.
The anime has included abilities multiple times without ever explaining them, and making them visually understandable to little children, this was one of these times.
@@Robin93k I always thought of Thunder armor as a callback to Swellow shrugging off electric attacks back when it was captured as a Taillow and foreshadowing to Pikachu learning Volt Tackle.

Wally’s Team is gen 6 so there’s a lot more Pokémon to go against
Yea only reason blue is S tier is because of the vastly low pokemon pool, and the fact that psychic in gen 1 was the goat. Bug and ghost pokemon were the only counter at the time, and both types were under represented. He just had the best coverage at the time
Box Moose bug was the only “counter”. Gen 1 psychic were immune to ghost moves.

You mentioning Zoroark made me wish for one thing in the DLC: that they don't make dynamaxing break the illusion like using Z-moves did. I could think of so many tricks to keep it up while battling that could just be ruined if the illusion breaks
Zoroark is my favourite pokémon but I wish it was just slightly better ://
How about this: not adding Zoroark cuz it sucks? :)
Honerkamp i mean i like him but you’re entitled to your own opinion:))
My guess is that they will make zoroark lose illusion on dynamax because otherwise they'd have to make a seperate animation for the dynamax form losing the illusion, but that aside zoroark is meant to be a gimmick so taking away that gimmick when you dynamax doesn't make sense, especially since other abilities aren't nullified like disguise.
Pretty sure Zoroark is confirmed for one of the DLCs so we'll get to find out soon 😁😁
I had forgotten about X and Y's rivals. I think there were like 4 rivals, but you only fought 3 of them once after the first couple of gyms and then again right before the Elite 4, with only the 4 wanting to be a proper trainer and catching pokemon and leveling them up. Shit was wild, it felt like you were beating up small children.
Serena & Callum: Being the very best, like nobody ever was.
Tierno: "I must dance!"
Same felling i had when fighting blue
@@ninjapotatolorf6237 He has his priorities straight, I guess
i kinda like them tbh. (and yes im biased because i just personally really love gen 6 despite it being easy) I feel like the 4 rivals is meant to show more of a comparison of how you and the other prodigy trainer grow compared to a regular pokemon trainer (because remember youre practically the chosen one in every game) and the reason the 3 weaker ones only have 3 pokemon is because the only times you really fight them are times like when you fight tierno and trevor on the bridge, and those are BACK TO BACK with no healing in between. So i understand why they would feel that alot of people might think itd be unfair to be forced to fight 12 pokemon straight with no warning ahead of time in the middle of a route where you already had to fight multiple trainers to get to them, and wouldnt have gone back to the pokecenter unless its your second playthrough or looked up when the rival battles are
Again not saying theyre particularly challenging, but i think it genuinely fits thematically and tries to actually make you feel like youre strong and its not just that everyone else is weirdly weak, its just that 99% of people dont have a pokemon with them for the express reason of fighting others with them, theyre usually more just pets/protection or used for convenience
Ex: Tierno just likes seeing pokemon use moves aesthetically, he essentially raises them for gen 3 esque beauty competitions, and it explains why he only cares about petal dance on his roserade, thats the best move in history for what he enjoys about the universe
Trevor doesnt care how strong his pokemon are, every time he meets you he makes it a point to say that the only thing he really cares about is how many pokemon you and him have seen, he just wants to complete the pokedex for the professor, not clear out gyms
Shauna is honestly pretty forgettable imo outside of the fact she is sort of suggestive that she might like you romantically, which mightve just been a reference to how the region is in france and Paris is the City of Love so you have to go on a fireworks date with somebody and itd be weird if its the rival that is as focused on becoming champion as you are that was there
and Calum/Serena are the generic "im gonna beat you someday just wait!" rival that every pokemon game has to have, not much to say about her but then again not much to say about most pokemon rivals
this was way too long reply to a 2 year old post sorry 🙏🏽 just felt like giving my perspective on the in universe reasons they are how they are, the majority of them arent even traveling for the same reason as you, theyre just with you cause youre hometown friends

Wolfey getting mad at the Kalos "rivals" made my day.
It's no understatement to say Wally's post-game ORAS squad is a *major improvement* over his original 5-member team from both RSE & ORAS (where he uses a freakin' *Delcatty* of all things) and his battle theme from Victory Road onwards is *awesome.* I like how the developers started paying attention to the Metagame over the years (such as post-game Wally in ORAS & an upgraded Elite Four in BDSP) by including competitive move sets, items, abilities & giving certain NPCs Pokémon with beneficial natures, competitive EV spreads & perfect IVs; it adds a little challenge to an otherwise easy game series. There’s even two NPCs in the Battle Resort who allude to a “green-haired trainer” who runs around the beach carrying eggs and mumbling about base stats (obviously referring to Wally.)
Wolfe: leaves in him having to remake the tier list
Also Wolfe: Edits out something mysterious
Wolfey is hiding something from us! :O
I bet he cursed, he said once before the only real difference between him on and off camera is that he keeps it PG on CZcams so I bet he was like "TIERNO YOU ARE F***ING TRASH!"
If I remember right, you fight all the XY rivals right after each other so gamefreak probably thought it would be obnoxious to have 4 straight 6 pokemon battles (I don't think you can even heal/save between them like you can with the elite four). Calem was the main competitive rival so it makes sense for him to have a full team, but they probably decided to give everyone else 3 pokemon to make it less grindy
yup, this. The fights are mostly in the middle of random routes that you already need to fight other trainers to get to, and theres no warning or heal ahead of time so on a first playthrough unless you looked up where the fights are ahead of time youre nearly GUARANTEED to walk into a back to back fight, and 3 of the 4 rivals werent even trying to keep up with you in the first place. Tierno is just collecting pokemon to have them dance and do beauty contests(also explains the petal dance, exclusive roserade, dude literally only cares about moves aesthetically lol), Trevor is just trying to complete the pokedex for the professorso he doesnt even challenge gyms, etc. Theyre still not necessarily hard but they make sense thematically and would genuinely be kinda TOO hard for the target audience of 10 year olds on their first attempt
That being said the elite 4 shouldve definitely all had 6 instead of 4 pokemon smh
"You might make them mad which is a moral victory." - Wolfe 2020
If Tierno has complete movesets on all Pokémon and, say, something like an Aegislash he would probably be B tier
Old comment but I’m so salty that in the very next generation they made an entire dance themed multi formed Pokémon that would have made a perfect Pokémon for him :( in the eventual revisit to Kalos my boy better get the Oricorio Team he deserves.
Obviously a late comment, but imagine this man having like, a Quiver Dance Volcarona and Dragon Dance Haxorus
I remember that "someone" was able to get Morpeko to number 1 on the latter, so clearly it is threatening enough to put Marnie in C tier =P.

I feel like with the Gen 8 Rivals they were too focused on keeping to a theme and forgot the trainer had to be difficult for example, Bede's glaring weaknesses. That is actually true for much of Gen 8 in general (so far) With gen 6 they basically just didnt try LOL
Well, to be fair, Marnie and Bede are gym leaders, they're supposed to stick to a type. (Aside from that one time with blue)
With gen 6 i think they were balanced for the 3 in a row battle on the bridge
I feel like Bede was quite accurate. A tough guy whos actually bad, but he starts expanding later on.
Also, Gen 8 is actual improved in enemy levels compared to gen 6 and 7. They keep up with you if you didnt grind. Also see Tournament rematches and Hop.
Unfortunately, they didnt fix the problem of too much amount and ways of getting EXP. Thank Gen 6 and people who gave those systems a pass for that.

Honestly when it comes to having a "Rival" ,a person you went head to head with while aiming for the same goal, i think the people that dare i say would "qualify" to even being a Rival is Gary, Paul, Wally, Barry, Cheren, and Hau.
How about Hop and Marnie? I mean, you take on the same gyms, have the same goals, fight each other in the final tournament... And with Hop, you even take on the big bad guy together in a double battle.
Paul?
wally is so cool
@@Romidamn Marnie felt more like a person you happend to meet, not really rival-material... Hops whole character arc is scripted: he is severely weaker as you and can't keep up. So, I don't really see him as a rival.
Bede however would fit the stereotypical rival mold
@@smirglepapier531 why does it matter? Pigeonholing the games into these terrible gen 1 copycat roles is only gonna guarantee we keep getting "Pokemon: Basically the Same and Pokemon: Practically the Same" each gen
I do think Wally could be S tier. His team is definitely one of the best- even ROM hackers typically keep his team as is, they just give him proper moves and EVs. I do think Silver is B tier too, he has a pseudo-rain team which could be interesting with the right moves/EVs.
Wolfe got no BUSINESS being that attractive in the thumbnail
the fact that blue stood as the only S tier trainer made me feel too good to understand it
That was in the context of a gen 1 meta, aka only the first 150 pokemon. The more gens get added the worse the rivals get... for some reason.
Love the whole XY part haha
I do remember that Trevor and Tierno are usually battled in double, which explains why they have 3 pokemon each, since in doubles they would have a whole team. So maybe if you pick the best of both teams, they could be a bit higher tier than C, maybe a potential B?
Also, Marnie is a D tier trainer with an E Tier team
& an S tier characterization
Marnie has characterization?
@@emblemblade9245 yes, though she is lacking in importance or any form of arc or backstory really. Great design, well written dialogue (actually most of the games since bw have pretty good dialogue) but she never really has a moment, unless you count letting you into piers gym which is kind of not much
I really wish Contrary Serperior was in the current meta cuz it would be so satisfying to switch into a g-max move and just boosting yourself through their moves
Saying that Hop missed the lesson om typings is hilariously ironic
Hey wolfe, it would be cool to see you making a tier list of gen 1 exclusively. I like your content, keep up the good work.
The intro is still amazing when it’s changed for any reason.
I'll pretend to not have seen that mixed Haxorus with Surf.
I think that X and Y trio is from a section where you double battle with each of you filling half a team so they only get three pokeslots. I would pair two of them up for a full team.
Good to see my boi Barry is up there. The rematches against him in Platinum were insane not just in levels (his team gets stupid high level after enough rematches), but in team composition too. There is a lot of offensive pressure from the get go with his Staraptor, and intimidate only makes it harder to respond to that effectively if your lead is physical.
One of the most fun rematches in the series I find. Up there with the Colress rematches in BW2.
The requirment is stupid though and he has awful natures on his mons renengade platinum made him max level right away with good natures
Next up do a top 10 or 15 favorite personal pokemon list! Would love to see that as you mentioned exeggutor!
It's interesting to watch these videos, even though i'm just a casual story player. I would never be good at competitive because i require a Flareon on my team at all times.
You require the worst Eeveelution?
I agree with the placements. I was going to put Wally's team personally on S tier; but after listening to your explanation, I would yeah, put him at A instead.

Nice list! Would you consider doing some videos improving the move choice or pokemon selection for the champions? Like, how you would spruce the champs up for if they were to join VGC?
He should play test the teams to make sure the list is accurate
I think the justification for the trash rivals in X/Y was that you fought them all back to back in your last battles against them. I forget if you could heal up between battles. They still sucked, obviously.
@Dragongamer 7 iirc, don't Tierno and Trevor do most of their battles as double battles?

The only thing on this list I disagree with is Wally. He definitely belongs in S, simply because his team would do MUCH better than the other A tiers. (Yes, I am aware that they are seperated by their own metas. And I still stand by my previous point)
I think with the three rivals from X & Y (Tierno and Shauna and such) there was still a way to cut them some slack by using the anime teams.
For example I recall Tierno having more pokemon in the anime and it mostly being a decent core for a rain team..
:) but I get that this is an episode for rival teams from the games. And there they suck hahaha

Ah yes, X & Y...
The only gen that legit tilted me because I had to stop for trainers with 1 - 2 pokemon every 5 steps and they weren't even fights, just a one sided clapping.
The rivals were a joke too, I never felt so insulted and I had to shut my brain down to prevent IQ loss.
and ppl say current gen is easy. heh... yeah... true... xd
Have you done a tier list of E4 champions? If not then I think that'd be a pretty cool video to make.
Hey wolfe I’m a big fan of your content, because of you my vgc knowledge has increased a lot,so whenever someone calls you a noob they should remember that they’re idiots cause a Pokemon world champion probably knows more about this game than anyone else.
For the X and Y "Rivals" I would've looked at their battle mansion teams to at least get 4 pokemon for fairness
I personally like the XY characters. I enjoyed traveling in a group bc that’s how it would be if Pokémon trainers were real. They’re not overly memorable but I think people hate on them way too much
I hate them ingame I tv they good
Beyond that XY kind of got.... poor treatment from Gamefreak (not 3rd game like the Gens usually do, on top of being poorly balanced due to experimental new-gameplay), it has a lot of unfair treatment by the players, IMO, because too many people are adults (now) and forget that these games are still 95% targeted at 10-12 year olds and not designed to be incredibly difficult but to be fun.... for kids.
@@horusschnopp1882 like- I dont get the "it's for kids" argument. I was 10 when I played Platinum, it took me a few months, but I got all the way to the elite 4 using just the route 1 shinx I caught because I liked the cat. it cost the same amount when I got it as X and Y on release. I only blacked out once during all of Y version and I only used a Riolu I caught near the first gym. granted Riolu is much stronger than Shinx, but the game was also *far* easier. It's for kids is insulting to kids, they can be cleaver or they can brute force it with the one cat they like.
@@lizzytrip4560 and how old were you when you played y? Also 10? Not that it matters since its just your personal experience. All youve said here is that between playing plat and y you became good enough to best it a bit quicker.

@@horusschnopp1882 Gamefreak themselves admitted to dumbing X&Y down because kids preffered Mobile games instead. Crystal & Emerald also had Kids as target audience but they are still challenging even today, especially if you dont use the Legendary.
