    The thing you didn't mention is that a player coming from the CHL could be less likely to get the sophomore slump as they play 68 game season, still less then the NHL but more and if you go the distance then it's 68 season + 16 to 28 Playoff games + up to 4 to 5 memorial cup games so at a full season a CHL player can play 88 to 101 games in the season. I don't know the playoff ways of NCAA, KHL, or Swiss league's work so can't give an exact number but I feel it is still less then 82 games if they win their respected championships.

    • @TheAirbrushProfessor
      @TheAirbrushProfessor Před 4 měsíci

      That's a good point. An adjustment to 82 games would be much harder for college players.

    • @jfs11th
      @jfs11th Před 4 měsíci +1

      in Ncaa they play around 50 games including regular season , conference championship and knockout stage. In NLA(swiss league) regular season has 52 games. For example Ev Zug played 52 games reg. season + 11 playoff games + 12 Champions league games, so 75 in total + spengler cup(if they played). In KHL it's probably the same as NLA minus the champions league.

    Matty has also been pushed around a ton, and been in concussion protocol/injured a couple times. I wonder how much that has affected his playing style. Dunner was really the first one to stand up for him this year, after being boarded against Columbus.

  • @jrey800
    @jrey800 Před 3 měsíci

    As someone who had a brostrom from going feet first into the boards, dislocated shoulder from tripping during a run, and having S1 to L5 fusion along with baker cyst's in both knees from jumping out of airplanes (among the numerous other issues I have with my back). I don't agree with PTSD being the choice acronym, however, I struggled when I served as well, especially after my back surgery because I was upset with not being able to conduct the same training as peers and subordinates (this part bothered me the most as how can I instruct someone to do something, when I am not physically capable of doing it myself).
    Glad you recognized the issue, and sought to take care of the mental aspects injuries have... It's a perspective I wish I had before I retired, which probably would have helped me, as well as maintain a better social life as opposed to cutting myself off due to feeling some sort of guilt when hanging out with coworkers and friends.
    Thanks for the insight on your struggles, and opening my eyes to why I might have had mine as well.

    I don't think we have to worry about Bedard. You'd really have to be avoiding hockey news to not know what he's capable of out there, and he's proven that already scoring almost at a ppg pace on a terrible+injured team. Plus with him being one of the most determined and disciplined players you'll find, I'm sure his trajectory will just keep going up

    Great video! - As a (biased) Kraken fan I think Matty will be fine. His point production is way down but I think it’s a product of a few things that are pretty easily explainable vs him just not being as good as we thought.
    1. He scored(s) almost all of his goals shooting to the same spot (above the pads & below the blocker/glove) - I think goalies/scouts have caught on
    2. He clearly spent this offseason focusing on faceoffs specifically but I also think board play and defense instead of offense/shooting - he has made a huge leap in FO% and board play this year. Makes me think when he focuses on improving his shot the Gs will come
    3. Teams are way more physical with him this year vs last year and he is adjusting to it
    I truly think the sophomore slump is a real thing especially for Calder winners and I’m glad your stats back that up. The MacKinnon graph gives me hope lol

    The joys of getting older... I played hockey growing up for years and only had one injury (badly bruised hip) that actually caused me to miss some games... and that includes a broken nose at one point, but since everyone wore face masks, so I was ok to play in a week. However, now that I am older (in my 40s), every time I try to get back playing in the local beer league, I keep getting hurt a few games into a season on random stuff and had to stop playing for a bit. So... I feel your pain and frustration when you can't seem to catch a break (no pun intended) with injuries.

    One is statistical factor your not consider is regressions to mean. You are selecting the date set based on performance in there first year. This could be due to there abilities but also it could be due to them have some lucky bounces or preform above there ablity. If they are out preforming the first year this would in increase there chances of being in the top 5 draft picks and one could expect lower preforms in the second year when they return to preform at there mean ablity.
    I think your other factors as impact athletes second year in the league, this just another factor.

    Even if Bedard does get a sophomore slump (which is unlikely) he still has that one skill guaranteed to get him a good amount of goals. Let’s say 25-30 goals even if his assist stats plummet. And that one trump card skill is his “shot”. But yeah the fact that Bedard is still leading all rookies in points this year despite being gone for several weeks is just outrageous 😂. Blud is in a league of his own 😅

    I think the term Sophomore Slump can be applied to rookies in all major sports (obviously this can vary player to player) they are young and depending on their position on the team (the added pressure of being a First round draft pick as opposed to a 5th - 6th round pick who most people think may not stay on a team) its inevitable they would have a slump and some even expect it (unless otherwise).

    • @duaneday5474
      @duaneday5474 Před 4 měsíci +1

      Teams have had a full season to scout their habits and get some experience in game vs the rookie. Chances are they'll have more responsibility as a sophomore so the competition is better as well. This is the reason for sophomore slump. It is up to the sophomore and the coaching staff to make necessary adjustments and develop the player at the right pace.
      Goalies and defenders usually take more time and teams tend to be more patient with exposure to top pairing minutes and workload between the pipes for fear of them loosing confidence because they're not ready.

    I would worry more as he may come back gun shy, afraid to cut into the center. He's also coming back to a team with little support and a coach who has them playing a horrible system. The book so far on Bedard, he has a glass jaw. I still stand on my opinion that he should have been sent to AHL, states aside he does not have NHL speed and so many times he looks lost out there. Not knowing where to be and often skating to the puck holder and the weak backhand passes in the offense zone. I say this as a Blackhawk fan, a year down to develop has the most upside other than ticket sales. As we all know the hawks will have him for 3yrs he will develop to NHL levels and just as he's really ready to break out they'll trade him for younger players and prospects as this has been the cycle for the last ten years.

Talking about anything outside of hockey is blasphemy to them. Bedard is one of those guys. Unless he suffers injury after injury he's going to figure the NHL out, not the other way around. Getting his chin checked was a good experience for him. Now he knows he has to figure out another way and I guarantee that's all he's been thinking about. I think people are sleeping on the fact that Connor Bedard isn’t the best of his generation for as long as Gretzky got to be. He’s just the best that’s been noticed so far. This is exactly why you can’t say “Gretzky would dominate today’s game”. There’s just no real world where that’s true, and that idea comes from people not understanding how to read and interpret stats without adding their own implications and biases into it. Gretzky would fucking suck in today’s game. The only evidence you need for that is that players in general are just thousands of times better than they were in gretskys day, and you can’t just use averages and make assumptions those averages would translate to modern hockey. They don’t. Gretzky knows it, and so does anyone who’s really good at something. You know you’re not the best, you’re not even close. You’re just the best that got noticed at the right time. There’s bound to be thousands or even millions of people who will have similar athletic abilities had they been trained the way Gretzky was and given the same opportunities. It’s not that hard to be really good at something when you have the tools and resources to spend a lot of time learning/practicing that thing. So yes, there are better players than Connor out there. In a few years we will start seeing them in the drafts. Hell we already are. Connor isn’t going to be the absolute best the way Gretzky was, because the tools hockey players have access to now allows them to close those massive gaps in skill or compensate for them at the least. That’s only going to accelerate, and that’s also why no matter how much any of us won’t like it, fighting and massive hits aren’t going to be part of the game in 50 years because kids are just gunna be too fast to stop that way. It will require the game to change how it’s played. That’s really exciting to me. I don’t care about the Bedards and gretskys we already have. I wanna see a whole fucking league of bedards and gretskys

      @@jaceking5938lol or maybe you’re just too lazy to understand basic mathematics? I mean, I’m happy to argue this with you. But you have to attempt to engage. Let me make it simple. You cannot just take gretskys averages and compare them to modern day. That literally tells you nothing except what you want it to. You have to take his averages, and weigh them against how player averages have shifted too. You can’t just assume that there is that much of a gap in skill now because there was then. That’s just stupid. You would have to account for factors that existed or were removed from the game since then, economic factors, how many people played at competitive levels as children then vs now, etc. you can’t just assume dominance now because there was then. You have to prove what the dominance was, and that players have somehow not gotten any faster or more efficient with how they train and learn to recognize other players threats over time which you can’t without a fuck load of assumptions on your part

    • @Southboundpachyderm
      @Southboundpachyderm Před 4 měsíci

      @@jaceking5938 besides that, you can look at skill gaps today and just ignore the entire mathematics involved. It’s not hard. Connor Bedard isn’t miles above any other player nor is Connor McDavid. They are undoubtedly the best at what they do, but when you break down their skills and compare them, they’re only a small percentage point in certain areas, better than guys like Mackinnon. Same with Crosby and ovi. Yeah they’re a step ahead, but that step ahead isn’t Gretzky level because it’s not possible for there to even be that much of a gap any more because the game has been studied and perfected so much more than it was then. You can’t just stick a guy out to take a penalty for easy 4 man rushes up the ice like you could in gretskys day, and goalies aren’t fucking god awful like they were then either. Everyone has gotten way better. Proportionally you’ll see more skill growth the lower down you go in skill tier. In the time it takes a white belt to get their black belt, it took the black belt just as much time to add a single stripe onto that black belt. Same is true for any skill. What that means is that in the time since Gretzky played, the game doubled in speed, and talent among the entire player base. You can’t win cups with one mcdavid or one Austin Matthews anymore. You need an entire team effort because the game has gotten way more skill oriented than it ever has been

    I know you can do better than this post. The title is misleading “This might be bad news for Connor Bedard” . Then you go on an overly long ramble with the eventual conclusion that he may have a sophomore slump while highlighting a number of players who have excelled their second year. You omit a Hall Of Fame list of players who had no slump. The likely conclusion should be that Bedard will continue to excel like almost all players of his calibre. That might be good news for Connor Bedard. It sure will be for Hawks fans.

      You're biased. :) Your statement is VERY far from clear. You've got generational talent on the Oilers, and yet they didn't fare any better than a second year expansion team did in the playoffs. Virtually nobody thought the Kraken would be playoff contenders in the 22-23 season, and yet they made it to the second round. Most everybody expected the Oilers to do AT LEAST as well as they did, with direct evidence from the previous season that they were capable of it.

    I really don't want to bring a form of politics into this, but you honestly waited 1.5yrs for an MRI? Good lord, I tore my ACL/LCL and fractured a bone in my knee while playing, they gave me one the day after it happened. Then had my surgery right after the swelling went down. NA healthcare isn't perfect, but damn, I'm sorry you had to go through that.
    Edit: Oh, and please stop showing the Wild get dunked on every video :)

    • @RobTalksHockey
      @RobTalksHockey  Před 4 měsíci +1

      At first I went through physical therapy because there was a small chance that my ACL could recover. Eventually the ACL failed, and I got a full tear. I also opted to wait for my surgery because I got booked in at the office that does Olympic surgeries. But yeah, you typically have to pay around $2000 to get in the next day for an MRI.

Yeah you have to pay health insurance but for $200 dollars a month for health insurance its worth getting helped right away. Waiting over a year lmao

    Great video Rob. It looks like Chicago is going to be fecal matter again this year, which has a lot to do with Connor McDards injury. Hopefully they find a player in the 2024 draft that can be his shotgun rider. I mean, F the Black Hawks as a team, I have nothing good to say about them, but I hope McDard gets someone to play off of.
