Let’s be honest, seeing house Lannister get put in its place is always a treat.
Indeed. Arrogant little shits. Glad they're practically extinct now.
Yeah, ever since the Field of Fire the Lannisters were wealthy, but they were declining in reputation with the culmination in Tywin's Father who was a total joke. Thwn Tywin came and Lannisters were serious people again.
@@jakuboledzki6499 the Lannisters were feared and respected for most of their history Tywin's father wasn't a culmination of anything, he was a weak man and bad lord, many houses have those kind of lords from time to time.
Yess
@@masterplokoon8803 Nah, they were powerful and wealthy, but they didn't get their sinister reputation until Tywin
Visery’s may have been a kind man; but he’s still a dragon underneath. When he put his foot down; he meant it. RIP King Viserys I
"There are three things all wise men fear: the sea in storm, a night with no moon, and the anger of a gentle man", or rather in this case, the anger of a gentle dragon
A kind man? I name him fool, he caused a civil war that would end up kill the dragons his house needed.
He's a great father only to Rhaenyra but other than that he's nothing but an irresponsible individual who laid the foundation to a destruction.
@@donaldduck3078 Not entirely his fault though. Daemon,Rhaenyra and others fucked up just as much as he did.
@@shamcaster6087 He was famous for being generous, kind, and diplomatic. Most of the lords and commonfolk loved him. A rare site when a ruler is not consumed by power or greed. Rather he is obssessed with keeping the peace but perhaps to a fault. He was far better than the worse rulers kings landing ever had but also far worse than the best rulers the sat on the iron throne.
"And when would I be doing that?" I love it. He said "Go on, tell THE KING what he's supposed to do."
It was his foolish obstinance in the face of tradition that brought down his house so I would say the KING chose poorly.
@@johnsham7568 It was the king's good will to a house of traitors that did such thing.
@@johnsham7568 it was the misunderstanding at his death bed that caused the war. Everyone knew damn well who was next to rule but alicent apparently has no idea her ex bff has a son named the same as hers like it's all just one massive misunderstanding.

I love how Viserys beat a Lannister at their own game, subtle implications with sharp authority underneath.
Yeah love viserys for doing that
Lions maybe king of beast but lion cannot beat a dragon
No that was Tywin's game. And Tyrion adopted it after that.
Before Tywin, the Lannisters were actually known to be exploited for their soft and kind tempreament. Perhaps Tywin adopted this approach from the detractors of his hoise
This is the Lannisters at their weakest, they are soft summer lords who are tucked away from the problems of westeros on top a large deposit of gems. The Lannisters we are used to seeing is thanks to Tywin, and we also get Tyrion who is basically a reincarnation of Lan the clever.
Lannisters at this time weren't conniving. They were rich and kind of stupid.
And this is why Lord Beesbury was 100% sure Viserys didn’t change his mind about Rhaenyra as heir
I hate criston for what he did to lord beesbury. Beesbury was the only one there that had honor and fin go along with alicent and Ottos Games.
Can’t believe I liked cole on the beginning. His obsession and later hatred for rhaenyra are psychotic
@@azra2263incel even though he was right about one thing. She ruined his honor and her own for one night and saw nothing of it.
@DVillagomez240 I mean true be he has free will. Like she didn't ruin anything he Ruined his own honor. She didn't rape him ?? Also having mistresses and concubines was a normal part of royal life. Even for women (albeit it was much more looked down upon, it still happened in most royal families in real life). So for rhaenyra thats not even such a big Deal if no one knew about it. Her Moral Compass is different to ours (tbh all royals especially in asoiaf have a screwed moral compass). But for cole to run around and be like "she Ruined my honor" is laughable. Dude she didn't raped you, you were a willing participant
@@azra2263Crispin Cole being crispy.
@@BlackDiamond2718 "Ruined his honor?" A man 1.5x her age, a tower over her in full armor who should have the sense to know damn well she couldn't report him for not coming to bed with her while she was not of right mind? Pff...
Viserys seems really easygoing and laidback until it comes to Rhaenyra. The ferocity he shows when protecting her is next level. It's almost impossible to believe that Alicent really thought even for a second Viserys would ever want Aegon as king over her.
And this is why it should be crucial to keep your own house in line. Maybe having them all together and reminding each of his kids what is what, and that they are after all one family, and how they must leave everyone else out of their family because eventually only dragons matter.....it would not come to a schism. But things like that happened in real life and so...
If only he had been willing to put Alicent in her place, the Dance Of Dragons needn't have happened.
@@alessaross3559if only he had executed Otto
Honestly I feel like she was just looking for an excuse rather than truly believing that Viserys would just change his mind on a whim.
Alicent needed a good Robert Baratheon backhand to the cheek
He kept digging a deeper and deeper hole for himself the more he talked. Lmao
He started well enough, but destroys his entire credibility.
It's not his fault, no one expected Rhaenyra to inherit over Aegon@@Bahamut3525
Viserys may be one of the most timid of Targaryen kings, but he has his inner dragon alive and well. It just takes it to growl and even a lion tucks it's tail. People seem to forget he's the last person alive who rode Balerion the Dread. And given who his previous riders were, he didn't accept weaklings.
Thank god someone mentioned this...
I wonder if Vizzy T figured taking Godzilla flying wasn't for him. Maybe a type B guy like him didn't care for riding a nuclear warhead with a mind of its own.
@@sweetpotatofries99 it's implied that a dragon can have mamy riders, but the rider cannot have more than 1 dragon.
He's a people pleaser at times and avoids conflict, but I wouldn't say he ever acts timid
@@sweetpotatofries99 Balerion was very old and near death when Viserys flew him. Viserys I actually don't find that timid. I think he was pretty balanced and effective in fact. Every king makes mistakes and the show happens to focus heavily on some of his biggest. The Targaryens were always a ticking time bomb anyway.
I love how Jason’s beard and hair style actually give him a subtle lion’s appearance, as if he’s trying to directly imitate his house’s sigil.
I never really thought about it, but you’re right. I like how Tyland / Jason actually look like they could be distant relatives of Jamie and Cersei. Good casting.
Lmao
According to GRRM, by this time not only dragons lived in the Crownlands, but also lions lived in the Westerlands.
@@ffarkasm Lions lived on for far longer in the Westerlands did they not? Tywin's father Tytos was attacked by a lioness while hunting and was saved by the kennelmaster whom he elevated thus creating house Clegane.
@@alexanderb5726 exactly. Though "far longer" might be a matter of debate. If we consider that Westerosian lions died out about a century later than the dragons (which were introduced there by the Targaryens roughly 200 years before the event of HotD), it seems to be a mere coincidence that lions died out in the same time period, after being a deteminating part of the local ecosystem as an apex predator for probably _several hundred thousand_ years.
Nevertheless I'm not entirely sure evolution and ecology in GRRM's world is that similar to that of ours.
I like how Viserys starts annoyed but bemused at first, but as Jason assumes that he'll be replacing Rhaenyra with Aegon the fire in Viserys heart flares, and the dragon in him stirs angrily.
The Lannisters never did learn to avoid angering a dragon! Did they? 😉
The guy was the last one to ride Balerion the Black Dread, but... he was definitely a rider of Balerion nonetheless.
@@BrettSmashy
To be fair, the Lannisters DID ally and aid the Targaryens multiple times in their history. Wasn't till Tywin came that they suddenly Rebelled against the House of the Dragon to end it
@@thalmoragent9344 Jason's father supported Visery's claim.
It was a fair assumption.
This was the first scene I truly began to be impressed by Viserys' inner strength. He told it how it is out in the open and stuck to his word on Rhaenyra's ascension.
He took Alicent to the campfire minutes later and cried to her about his decision tho
He had to be drunk to muster the courage tho
@@mihaimax2180 Thats part of what makes him human and a good character imo

Comparing GOT Viserys to this guy is like comparing Aegon the Unworthy to Aegon the Conqueror.
This could also allude to Golden Dragons (the biggest monetary currency in Westeros).
@@ryankwon8785 Yes, that's obviously what Jason Lannister meant. But Viserys took advantage of his ambiguous phrasing.

The tragedy is that by insisting Rhaenyra be his heir over Aegon he's putting her in mortal danger and doesn't know the nobles will refuse to accept her as queen after his death. Seeing him fiercely defend her because of how much he loves her... it's heartbreaking.
the tragedy is that as much as we like the lannisters put in their place , jason lannister was right in this case. Naming aegon his heir would have saved both his house and the kingdom.
If he had just followed the Ruling of Jaeharys I in the Great Council of 101 AC that stated the male takes precedence over the female line, the whole Dance of Dragons would have been avoided.
@@justinbowers2749 Rhaenyra was just as capable of ruling. She was quite good at it prior to the Hightowers emptying the treasury. Besides, that’s not how fate would have it. The Prince That Was Promised would come from their line.
@@ragnabolt683 yeah but Viseris forgot he got throne by very same logic. His sister Rhaenys is first in line but his granfather Jahaeris made Viseris king simple cause he male.
Viseris stupidity destroyed house of dragon. And if he loved her so much why he didnt married her to Deamon to begin with and name Deamon his heir? Lords would accept Deamon as king.
Only reason why he was pushing Rheanira was out of sentimentality to his dead wife Aema.
You cant allow to be sentimental if you king. Good king should make decisions out of pragmatism.

Tywin Lannister would be shaking his head seeing his ancestor make himself fool like that
Tywin himself was bowing to targaryans offered his daughter and got rejected the same way
@@Person57586 😅😅🤣🤣🤣
Not to mention Aerys II enjoyed fueling rumours his relationship with Joanna Lannister was less than appropriate for years before that.
I can’t decide if Tywin would be more embarrassed by Jason’s inept politicking or his father Tytos’ general incompetence.
Lannisters!...*throws deer entrails to the ground* don't act like fools!
I can't believe Viserys murdered a Lannister without even getting out of his chair
Before this show, his predecessor was my favourite Targaryen. But thanks to the outstanding performance from Paddy throughout, Viserys now takes that top spot for me 😊
King Viserys is the prodigy of Jaehaerys Targaryen. Viserys acquired so much influence from his beloved grandfather.
Out of all the Kings we’ve witnessed in this show Viserys was definitely my favorite.
And to imagine one of the most despicable and unworthy Targaryen was named after this great man
Nah, Bobby B was cooler :)
The best king of House Targaryen was Jaehaerys the First. The rest of the kings are either weak, stupid, insane, cruel. It just so happened with Jaehaerys that around him in his time there were strong and reliable people who supported his rule.
@@targonyt7258 Definitely not. There have been as many good and wise Targaryens as cruel, insane and weak Targaryens.
@@6whiteshadows example?
I think Tywin just warged into the past to say this to his ancestor
"Lannisters dont act like fools"
Yes indeed 🤣😆😂
"I thought my kids could be dumbasses sometimes, but YOU..."
To be realistics, Jason had to say `Golden Dragons´ when Viserys asked him if he had dragons to offer. House Targaryen had enough flying dragons at this moment but more golden dragons are always welcomed to the Iron Throne.
He should have. It would have been funny, but I don’t think he had big enough 🥜!
Ironic since the Lannisters supported the Greens whose sigil is a Golden Three-headed dragon.
This episode was where I really started liking Viserys. I was worried he was going to replace Rhaenyra for Aegon but here he stands his ground. And he looks so annoyed at Jason for even suggesting that. I love how he is still diplomatic but you can tell from the tone in his voice it translates more to "Thank you for the gift, now get out of my sight." And you see the look on Jason's face, he knows he stepped in it hard. Needed to shut up and just walk away.
2:05 omg that smile. "I'm smiling now. Get the fuck out of here right now or I might not be smiling anymore."
This scene and the last one in the Throne room are solid proof that Viserys I was a true dragon. He just chose the right moments to show his teeth and breathe fire. After all, he was Balerion's last rider before he died. Would the Black Dread choose him if he was not a true dragon?
The show made him too likeable. In the books he was a weak King who allowed a Civil War to simmer during his reign because of his blind favoritism.
Both he and his daughter used to cut themselves on the Iron Throne, which indicates that the Throne itself rejected them.
@@gerardjagroo The only indicator that Rhaenyra ever cut herself on the Throne was from a third hand account of her sitting the throne and apparently having her legs riddled with cuts. The problem is that Rhaenyra sat on the Throne while wearing PLATE MAIL, which means it would be impossible to get an injury like that.
The Throne doesn't have a mind of its own, but for thematic reasons it usually happens when someone isn't behaving well, Kingly and gets careless. Even Aegon The Conqueror cut himself on the Throne. It's a throne made of swords.
@@gerardjagrooBook plot os written from biased POV. The people around him thought him as weak and that's how it was in the books. But in the series, they showed us from characters POV. You can say its kind of an accurate description of him.
He has to win an Emmy for his performance this season. He's been incredible to watch.
Viserys became immediately annoyed once he heard Jason's voice. 😂
Well, of course! Lannisters have that effect. 🤣
Who wouldn't?
This is what happens when a lion comes face to face with a dragon
" Do you have any dragons to offer? "
" Only gold ones, your grace. " *Puts sunglasses on.*
If Martin wrote the dialogue
I love how the Lannister just keeps digging his grave deeper and deeper 😂😂😂😂😂
Now we all know where Cercie got it from.
This episode, it only takes one scene for the Lannister twins to show that Tyland is the serious, smart one and Jason is the strutting dumbass with more ego than brains. It's going to get him killed someday. ;)
I always seen it like this : Viserys is the father Daenerys would have killed to have and would have cherished all her life .
Paddy did a fantastic job with this character, I hope he gets awarded for his performance.
So do I! I sincerely DGAF about Oscars or Emmys and haven’t for some time, but this year, I truly hope this show and Paddy Considine get rewarded for an amazingly well written, acted, directed show. If not, WTF is all that BS for?
I don't blame Visery for the death that comes after his passing. He did say, that he did not name Rhaenyra as his heir on a whim, all the lord's of the kingdom would do well to remember it.
The North remembers.
He broke the very law that put him on the throne. Rhaenyra sure is better ruler than Aegon (esepecialyy in the show) but sometimes keeping to the unjust law is a lesser evil than revoluton
"Rebellion? There's been nothing of the sort your grace" -future rebel who doesn't support his choice of heir
Vicerys should have killed Jason lannister right there0, as he showed his desire for Aegon.🔥🔥
The rebels are the blacks since Aegon II was crowned in the Red Keep and sat in the Iron Throne first. If you want to argue then watch the historical timeline and check who is the king after Viserys.
@@zxylo786 The rebels are the ones who usurped the throne from king viserys chosen heir Rhaynera. The order of coronation does not matter as Aegon is a usurper and a rebel regardless of order. Hes not the heir so the blacks cant be rebels.
@@andreypopov5972 By that logic Stannis is the royals and Joffrey is the rebel. Aegon II was the official king like it or not, and rebeling against him is the literal definition of a rebel.
@@zxylo786 Stannis is the rightful heir as all those in senior and legitimate decent from Aegon I are either dead, fled, or in the Night’s Watch when Stannis is crowned.
Rhaenyra is the heir because her King said so and then had all the lords in the realm agree. Then he wedded Rhaenyra to Laenor Velaryon he told them that Rhaenyra’s firstborn, REGARDLESS OF GENDER, would be the Targaryen King or Queen after her. And at the end of the Dance of the Dragons, every Claimant to the Iron Throne is descended from Rhaenyra Targaryen and none from Alicent Hightower.
I like how viserys stood by his decision
He is family man first and a king second. That is why I love his character so much.
Amazing work by Paddy. So many memorable, maybe even iconic, quotes.
Who’d have thought that centuries later that a Lannister would slay a Targaryen King and a Lannister would sit one day sit on the Iron Throne? 😂
Not a Lannister but a Bareatheon bastards.
Yeah, but that all thanks to Tywin who save his house from falling and being feared again.
And a woman for all that matter
Jaime, Cersei, Joffrey, Tommen, Tywin have all sat the Iron Throne.
Viserys and Dany have that same “That’s cute.” smirk.
Its genetic
“I got a text message that simply said: ‘Your Viserys is better than my Viserys’," Considine said. "It was from George R. R. Martin. And I thought: that’ll do it. Thanks for trusting me.”
I love that George RR Martin admitted that. His main priority is what's the best version of the world he created.
He's said Considine's performance has tempted him to go back, rip up the pages with Viserys in "Fire and Blood" and start anew.
Looks like Jason almost shat his pants
💩 🤣 For sure!
But would it be gold?
@@qmegamann heh, I get it :3
I can’t believe he would question his choice
This is such a brilliant actor, Jesus Christ, he stole the show.
Seriously one of my favourite scenes❤
There’s Balerions last rider
I believe initially he named her heir out of fear but he began to truly see that Rhaenyra had the potential to be good ruler. That is why he stood firm in his decision. He could be swayed about a lot of things but never that once his mind was made up and didn’t stand for anyone questioning it.
There's the Dragon. The lions tucked his tail
I feel viserys during this age was paranoid of people thinking himself weak and overcompensated. He knew he never faced maegor the cruel like his predecessor or even distinguished himself in his youth. He was completely unprepared for being king when it was thrust upon him and never had the complete mind for politics
Visery's was the best king of Westeros we got to see on any of the shows. People call him weak, but only the strong can maintain peace for decades, while the weak immediately turn to fighting.
The strong are capable of fighting and the weak are incompetent and indecisive, much like Aenys targaryen. A true king is one who keeps the peace but is prepared for a fight if that peace shatters.
I like how we often see Viserys as this kind and a peaceful king but I loved scenes like this where I wish he’d be more strong
Jason Lannister is well aware that this a guy who has dragon riders at his command by the end of this conversation 😅
Viserys still need to be respectful since the Lannisters and the Tyrells are very rich and are essential to Westeros' economy. It's why he is respectful and threatening simultaneously in the scene. Plus, Jason's statement regarding dragons could also mean Gold Dragons (Equivalent to 11,760 copper pennies).
Viserys just wanted to celebrate his baby's second birthday with a hunting trip and everyone's giving him grief.
It's shows how the noble major houses, aside from the Starks, Arryns, Tullys, and Martells, are very petty despite having everything they wanted in life as a major noble house. As Daemon said, “No matter how fat the leech grows, it always wants another meal." Daemon's understanding of this helped him navigate through the Game of Thrones and advise Rhaenyra on military matters.
Viserys: “do you have more dragons?”
Jason: “I could help you get more; I can use my families wealth to build you more dragon nesting grounds in my lands and expand the number of dragons your family will have in the future. You currently only have one place to hatch dragons and 16 under your control, when you could have multiple sites in case of a disaster. Most of the dragons died because they were only hatched in Valeria, too many eggs in one basket so to speak, why not seek to expand your families power by rebuilding the dragons numbers with a marriage alliance with my house? The dragons would be the property of house Targaryen, and house Lannister could cover the cost of building and upkeep.”
That's not a logical response. Not that those arguments don't make sense, but because Jason is too much of a dumbass to ever make that argument. Tyland, on the other hand...
Love that dragon-ish growl Paddy gives to that Lannister when he suddenly questions him.
Paddy Considine did a phenomenal job as King Viserys. Very enjoyable.
Paddy was immense, he deserves some serious recognition.
0:53 Look at Otto. Looking at their conversation from the distance.
King Visery only ever made one big mistake naming his daughter heir and then remarrying. You should never have remarried because once he got a son the son's life would be put in mortal danger because his claim would be better than his sisters. His sister would have to kill him to keep the throne. Otto recognize this immediately and Alicent not to long after.
During those times when life expectancy was so short, it is the duty of a King to produce as many spare heirs as possible. If Rhae were to die it would result to immediate power struggle and possibly war.
@@dannyboy4140 Yeah but Rhaenyra should have been the spare heir, not her brothers. There is no reason for Rhaenyra to be first in line of succession after sons were born to Viserys, that puts them inevitably at odds with each other
It's not a mistake. Monarchs remarrying is mandatory to birth as many children as possible in case something happens to their chosen heir. This was evident during King Jahaerys' reign which led to succession conflicts when many of his early heirs died. The only problem is that Otto is better at playing the Game of Thrones at this period.
@@ryankwon8785 Visery was inconsistent with the law, if he or Rhaenyra wanted legal justification for her rule they should have changed the law for all men and women in the 7 kingdoms, but as usual it was about the special white haired girl and what she wanted.
@@sirtarquin6306 I agree. Viserys' problem was he could have worked harder to make Rhaenyra his heir similar to how King George VI made the effort to make Elizabeth II his successor.

People like to criticize Viserys. I liked him a lot and the actor did an amazing job portraying the character. That 'thank you for the gift' and subtle smile afterwards was a nice touch. Very well done.

A bit of cleverness could've gone a long way
Yes but that also could have ended up backfiring on him as well

It's hard to imagine that tywin is the grand grand grand grand grand son of this clown. Sometimes it's hard to imagine that tywin is a Lannister at all, as most members of the family seem to be defined by their smugness.

it's crazy the levels of respect people show the targaryens in hotd than the lannisters in thrones.
'Respect' or 'fear'? It's kind of like the old statement about war between the US and the Soviet Union just after WW2, "Whatever happens, we have the bomb, and they don't." Dragons may as well be the atomic bomb. Targaryen power is essentially a given, no one can stand against them, and it's been that way for quite a while. Queen Rhaenyra is a disaster, a manipulator and wanted the throne despite the war it would bring. The King made a bad decision insuring war by promoting her as his heir.
It’s annoying knowing how it went from centuries of valyria ruling the known world, then Targaryens conquering Westeros after the doom, to Targaryens and dragons getting driven to near extinction and replaced by these Baratheon and Lannister fuckers.
