Wow-just subscribed. I have been looking to upgrade my Garmin and 8612 is what I'm leaning towards. This video was awesome-you covered an amazing amount of info and saved me hours or maybe days of reading manual and trying it out. I had never thought about powering up when not in water and impact on bigger transducers that could burn up. So you likely saved me and others some serious change! Thanks for covering things quickly and doing so much in only a half hour or so. I loved it didn't drag and a few more complicated or relevant things I didn't get 100 pct I just rewound. THANK YOU! I likely will have some questions on it when I get it-and I also appreciate you providing contact for those things. Awesome job-I will spread the word to other Garmin owners and when time I will watch the other videos. You clearly have mastered this technology and Garmin software and featutres.

@@NickOlinde Will do Nick. Topics I would like to know more about include how to save waypoints and info from a machine on one boat and put it on a 2nd (I have a Mako 21 for inshore/river/flats and 25' Grady for offshore). I'm curious if this can be done for different machines too, older Garmins as well as a nice Humminbird 12 I have. Thank you for saving me tons of time. I am envious of your screen real estate! I'd love to get one bigger than a 12 but I'm having trouble justifying and the fact that you don't get a mounting bracket with 16 on up is a problem for me as I don't have enough dash to put in a 16.
Another thing I'm doing that others may be interested in is using active capatain android app. I bought a 4k resolution android car 15.6 inch tablet and plan to use it as a 2nd screen on my boat. I'm thinking it only echos what is on main one, but it would be awesome if I could split what is being looked at. If anyone knows on that reply-I plan to try hooking that up this summer. If interested I can come back and post my results. I live in Edgewater FL but snowbird north summer months, so I'll be back in fall. Gotta go catch some stripers and bluefin!

In general, the TI units are faster in response to inputs. This is seen when quickly switching between sonar, downscan, chart, and split screens czcams.com/users/postUgkxeAxH15LxhjGlg5-CRYqjTGTEH0tbY4vk recommend The Hook units will show some lag on button pushes and screen switching. The big ticket item though is maps. If you install a mapping card such as Navionics or the free C-Map Genesis which has a lot of map detail, then moving around the map with the cursor or when running down the lake can lag significantly on the Hook units, but is seamless with the TI units.

Best ever explanation at the start though agree with last comment. I would always route to or autoguidance to avoid rocks and land. But can you explain why autoroute always avoids narrow channels even though I'm already in the middle of one? It tells me to u turn and go all the way around via open water... where I don't want to be in a small boat! I have it set for closest to shore. The channels are fully marked and used by large boats. Tapping to re-route only adds detours. It won't route via the inland channel. (This is INLAND Great Lakes.. Georgian Bay in Canada.. Lake Huron)

Hey Stephen! I did go over go to where you can hit a spot on the map and the autopilot does its thing. When you plotted a waypoint and hit go to, it ran you over land, had you hit route, would it take you through the waterway safely then to the waypoint.
Re tides and currents, can you get the various current arrows superimposed on the nav screen, Showing the strength of current at that time and location?
Look up 'Current Atlas' Juan de Fuca Strait and Strait of Georgia

Yea, I don’t really like the autorouting though. I mentioned it in the video how I like and recommend plaiting your own course and going waypoint by waypoint. I just don’t like the routing. And I found the current information on the Garmins to not be very useful at all and that is something that I don’t really think is a necessity for the beginner boater so I just mentioned tide because it is the most useful

I actually purposefully left that out because I myself do not use it and would rather plan my course manually. I am used to navigating in the Bahamas where local knowledge goes way further than a chartplotter does so planning my own course is more often than not more efficient and makes for a quicker route. I also think being able to manually plan a trip is a very useful skill that every boater should know.

We are eventually going to look for a center console in the 30 foot range to be used for fishing offshore as well as on a lake in Georgia. We have been using garmin products for years now but only watches and hand held GPS. Obviously you use Garmin but my question is what do you think we should use? Thank you for the subscribe! If you put in a waypoint and just hit go to then the autopilot will just go in a straight line to that point. All modern MFDs and autopilots have an auto-routing feature where it will automatically make a route with turns based off of the boats criteria and depth requirements. I personally never use auto-routing as I do not think it is really useful and I can do way better just doing it myself. Where I boat I know the waters like the back of my hand so am comfortable running through areas where the auto-routing would not send me.
