    I’m so glad I stumbled onto your channel. I have a 26’ CC and operate the boat in south west Florida around inter coastal waterways and in the gulf. It’s very shallow and sandbars move often with storms. I’ll probably never go more than 500’ offshore. I’m not big into fishing and mostly want to go up and down the coast to different islands, areas ie Marco island, key west, Tampa, and Destin. I need 12” because I wear glasses and I need a transducer. I’m trying to spend as least as possible and get as much options as possible. I’ll use depth, speed, charts, Fusion and would like auto guidance. Could you give recommendations based on the above? Very appreciative for your thoroughness and time in this video!

      For everything you are looking to do and a 12" screen I would recommend one of these two routes:
      1) If you do not want touch screen GPSMAP 1242xsv with transducer: t.ly/Moap
      2) If you want touch screen ECHOMAP Ultra 126sv: t.ly/UBJm

    Very nice comparison. Thank you. BTW, current is coulomb per second. If you are talking about "amps per hour" that would equate to coulombs per second per hour which is an acceleration dimension. You should just state that the Garmin unit under discussion has an average current draw of X Amps. An Amp·hr is measure of charge. Batteries have an Amp·hr rating.

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 3 lety +1

    Thanks for doing this video. It def helped! I'm just hoping for a bit more help. I am looking at the Cabelas/BP Black Friday options and would like to include going with the LiveScope on at least the bow mounted unit. They have both the EchoMap Ultra 106SV and the UHD 93SV on sale. I have seen where its mentioned that they "work together" and was hoping you could help me understand that better. If I got a each kind of unit, would they still work together? I was thinking of getting the 93 for the capt seat mount and the 106 for the bow on my bass boat. Thanks for any help you can give!

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety +1

      Apologize for replying after Black Friday, but yes, the Ultra 106SV and UHD 93SV will connect together with a network cable (ethernet cable). As a general rule of thumb, if it is a GPSMAP unit it can connect with any other GPSMAP unit and any ECHOMAP unit can connect with any other ECHOMAP unit. You just have to stay in the same family. The point in networking them is to share waypoints, charts and the transducers across the units. Hope that was helpful!

My boat is in the Cayman Islands and I have an updated version of the BlueChart g3 Vision map of Southwest Caribbean. What I was wondering can I go with the EchoMap 122SV with the Worldwide Basemap and then move my SD card over with the Southwest Caribbean BlueChart g3 Vision map form my EchoMap 73sv to the Echomap 122SV. I don't need G3 LAKEVU or US Costal maps which is what I thing is the only difference in the EchoMap 126SV and 122SV versions. What are your thoughts?

I've been looking to replace it. It has an external GPS unit on top of the t-top my question is if I replace that unit with either the echo map or the gpsmap garmin would I need that external GPS anymore or is it just built in to the other units. So ultimately if I buy a new unit and transducer do I also need to but an external GPS unit or is it compatible or is it even needed anymore.

Whats the least expensive option to add a 2nd display so that i can use the t-top unit for radar or sonar while using the 1243xsv for the main map views at the same time. Do i need the full featured xsv unit for the secondary unit?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety +1

      If you want all of the same capabilities as the one you have, I'd go with the GPSMAP 743. It is the 7" version and no you do not need it to be an xsv unit for the second chartplotter as it will still be able to control and view all of the sonar that is plugged into your main 12" unit via networking them together.

    Just wondering if I wanted a second unit on the bow of my bass boat for LiveScope, which Garmin model to choose. My current unit is a 126sv. Should I just add another 126sv, or something else. I want to stay with 12".

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety +2

      If you want a 12" I would for sure stick with the ECHOMAP units so that they can network together. As for which unit, your options would be either the 126sv or the 122sv. Depending on the price that you can find get whichever you can find cheaper. The 122sv should be cheaper if you buy it screen only (no transducer, unless of course you want another one). The only difference is the 122sv has the worldwide base maps (no contours), however if you network the two together the charts and maps will share from your 126sv to the 122sv - so basically no difference.
      Hope that was helpful and not just more confusing. 😂

I've been told that I'd need a different unit to do that and am considering an upgrade to a GPSMAP 943xsv for that. Would this be sufficient for that purpose? • GT51M-TM (t.ly/t6xE ) ... Great if primarily fishing coastal water (up to roughly 1,800 ft) while still working pretty well in fresh water
      • GT56UHD-TM (amzn.to/3mvFKYO ) ... Best All-Around if fishing a mix of fresh and shallower salt water (up to roughly 800 ft)

      Based on needing Radar you would be looking at the GPSMAP units. A few options, if you want to go with a 9" I would go with the GPSMAP 943xsv. If you want to go with a 10", you are stepping up to the top of the line unit, the 8610xsv. And if you want 12" (which is actually very large) you could do either the 1243xsv or go up to the 8612xsv (which would gain you higher resolution screen, and ability to use more than 1 transducer if that is something you are looking to do, otherwise save the money and go the 1243xsv route)

If you want to network them together look at the other GPSMAP series models, any of the current models will network with the 1222xsv with a simple network cable (Ethernet cable). You can either buy the garmin cables with a GMS 10 network hub to connect them all together, or make your own hub and save a few bucks with a cheaper network switch (I will be making a DIY video on this). It absolutely can be done, several different in hull transducers and all of them will do depth, so it just depends on what type of sonar you want. Do you want live imaging, 2d, etc.?
      As for the low water level alarm, almost all of Garmin's chartplotters now have a feature called 'Sonar Alarm' that allows you to set a Shallow Water alarm depth that will sound when the depth is less than the value specified - You should be good with any of the units in this video with this functionality

I find the 93sv UHD to be very laggy with my charts (changing the field of view takes many seconds to respond) and my image quality isn't nearly as good on sidescan as I would have expected from the GT56 transducer. Do you know if I put on a 106SV at my console would the higher wattage output of the 106SV and faster processor improve my sidescan imaging and reduce my chart lag?

    Looking to buy a Garmin GPSMAP 943xsv. What’s the difference between the 42 series. Would you recommend another for offshore fishing

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety

      The GPSMAP 943xsv will work great for offshore fishing. The GPSMAP 942xs is a previous generation model (not considered a current unit) that does not natively support sidevu without an additional black box, it also does not support UHD transducers. The screen resolution is a little bit lower than the 943. For the extra $100, I would for sure go with the 943xsv. Additionally since the 943xsv is considered a current model, you still get the latest software updates as of now.

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes it does, you should be able to just turn the knob when on the livescope screen to zoom in and out. If you are looking to do this on the sonar view, do this:
      Setting the Zoom Level on the Sonar Screen
      1 From a sonar view, select MENU > Zoom > > Mode.
      2 Select an option:
      • To set the depth and zoom automatically, select Auto.
      If necessary, select Set Zoom to modify the zoom setting. Select View Up or View Down to set the depth
      range of the magnified area, and select Zoom In or Zoom Out to increase or decrease the magnification
      of the magnified area.
      • To set the depth range of the magnified area manually, select Manual.
      If necessary, select Set Zoom to modify the zoom setting. Select View Up or View Down to set the depth
      range of the magnified area, and select Zoom In or Zoom Out to increase or decrease the magnification
      of the magnified area.
      • To magnify one particular area of the screen, select Magnify.
      If necessary, select Magnify to increase or decrease the magnification level.
      TIP: You can drag the magnification box to a new location on the screen.
      • To zoom in on the sonar data from the bottom depth, select Bottom Lock.
      If necessary, select Span to adjust the depth and placement of the bottom lock area.
      To cancel the zoom, deselect the Zoom option.

    Hi, couple questions: a few you might not be able to answer so don't worry about it.
    1) Would an echomap UHD send information like waypoints etc. to an Echomap Ultra and vise versa?
    2) Would the echomap UHD be able to display the Ultra's transducer readings or would I need 2 separate transducers for the 2 separate units?
    3) Is the 10" echomap ultra compatible with garmins "livescope ice fishing kit"?
    4) Which echomap ultra models have the US lake maps, similar to how the UHD's have the 3 and 4 to discern between models.
    5) is there any tangible difference between the different generations of echomap UHD's? Not sure if there's multiple gens of the Ultra but if there is what would be your reccomendation?

      Hey Mark, thanks for watching and the questions, my responses are below in bold.
      1) Would an echomap UHD send information like waypoints etc. to an Echomap Ultra and vise versa? *Yes it will*
      2) Would the echomap UHD be able to display the Ultra's transducer readings or would I need 2 separate transducers for the 2 separate units? *Yes, they can share transducers when networked and if the transducer is compatible with both units*
      3) Is the 10" echomap ultra compatible with garmins "livescope ice fishing kit"? *Yes it is*
      4) Which echomap ultra models have the US lake maps, similar to how the UHD's have the 3 and 4 to discern between models. *The ones with a model # ending in 6*
      5) is there any tangible difference between the different generations of echomap UHD's? Not sure if there's multiple gens of the Ultra but if there is what would be your reccomendation? *No, the UHDs and Ultras are all the same (first) generation of that line. Before the UHD line was the Plus which I would not recommend unless you are getting it for super cheap as they are no longer supported for firmware updates but still work with most of Garmin's transducer technologies, including livescope. The Ultras are the top of the line for the ECHOMAP series and would be the go to if that is in your budget range*

    I had a ECHOMAP 93sv UHD last season but right now I'm doing the research needed before pulling the trigger on a new one. I'm thinking of upgrading to the GPSMAP 93XSV. but is it really an upgrade other than pixles? I'm a hack inshore fisherman and I'm sure I didn't use the ECHOMAP up to it's capabilty I know. I never figured side view out much but it was a nice unit. Is there any advantage to getting GPSMAP over the ECHOMAP for a grunt like me other than pixles?
    Also could you tell me why the cost of ECHOMAPS vary so much? I can see size and as a factor and maps maybe but a range of $650-$1000 is pretty big. Do any of them have a feature that another one doesnt. I'm just looking for a reason. Thanks for the video and it was an easy like.

    So... a xsv supports sonar without a separate sonar module? 106sv needs a module vs a 1042xsv?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety

      XSV supports sonar for the GPSMAP line of chartplotters, the SV supports sonar for the ECHOMAP line of chartplotters. Neither the 106sv or the 1042xsv needs a sonar module. The 1042xsv does not support UHD though, so if you want to use a UHD transducer with it, you would want to pick up the module for that

There are islands off the MS Gulf Coast as well that are popular JetSki rides. 7” screen size will fit my needs and $750 or less is about where I would like to be budget wise. It seems that 90% of fish finder info targets underwater imaging. Those bells a whistles are fine but would get rarely used. Seeing what’s under me and water depth would be neat to play with from time to time but a transducer mounted outside the hull would not last long. I would need to mount it in the hull of the ski. The built in mapping you can upgrade to the maps you want from Garmin / Navionics and they are pretty dang good. I think you will like them! Fortunately you don't need a transducer to get the mapping portion. For the mapping on your phone, have you tried on google maps where you can download offline maps? It allows you to get that same mapping for an area even if you don't have cell service. Pretty handy! As for a transducer, Garmin makes a few in hull and thru hull designs. Am I understanding correctly that these units transducers only do one thing? Meaning an SV unit will have a transducer that only does side scan, but I won't be able to look directly under my boat, until I get a transducer for that specific function? Mega Live G2N Si to distinguish these specimens even with the traditional sounder because as soon as one approaches them the shadow of the boat makes them flee immediately.In these circumstances if I acquire a Garmin GPSMAP 1222 with Panoptix Livescope System Touchscreen Chartplotter an investment of 4310 $ Canadian that can give me a certain advantage in the capture of this trout

      Fred, thanks for watching and commenting with all that detail. Yes, with the setup that you are talking about you will have a big screen and the livescope transducer which will help you look in front of and around the boat up to ~120 ft (based off water conditions) so you can see the trout without being on top of them. It would for sure be a great tool to target them!
      On a side note, I need to make it up to Canada one of these days and go after some of these speckled trout! Sounds fun!

    Does the 1223sxv support the Bluechart G3 chip

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety +1

      Yes, you can use the BlueChart g3 maps on the 1223xsv, it just does not come on the unit from the factory - it will only come with the worldwide basemap. You can either use a card you already have with those maps, buy a new card, download through the active captain app or use Garmin express to get the maps. Alternatively, if you get the 1243xsv it will come with the BlueChart g3 maps on it and it is the same price as the 1223xsv MSRP right now. Hope that helps!

      @@AlexTimm thanks for the reply! Ok if I got the 1243 it would come with the bluechart g3 and not the base map . Do I need the base map?! What am I missing out on by not having a base map on my chart plotter?

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety +1

      @@angeloc3842 Yes it would. The base map is the stripped down version and the most basic you can get the unit. By getting the bluechart g3 that is essentially on top of the base map so you will still be able to see the worldwide land mass and water areas that the base map provides. You wouldn't be missing out on anything, getting the bluechart g3 is usually more money than the worldwide base maps.

      @@AlexTimm awesome thanks! Great news 👌🏼. Any transducers you’d recommend?! Normally bottom fishing in under 300 feet of salt water. Transom mount. Definitely want Side view, Down view and Sonar.

    What’s the difference between a Garmin 1253xsv and a 8412

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před 2 lety

      The 1253xsv is nearly identical to the 1243xsv except is an Australian model. The key differences between the 1243xsv and the 8412xsv are below from my perspective, however if you want the full comparison look here: t.ly/2tVq
      * 1243xsv has a slightly bigger screen (10.3" x 6.4"; 12.1" diagonal vs 10.1" x 5.7"; 11.6" diagonal)
      * 8412xsv has better screen resolution (1920 x 1080 pixels vs 1280 x 800 pixels)
      * 1243xsv has BLUECHART® G3 AND LAKEVÜ G3 Maps while the 8412xsv only has the worldwide base maps (if you go to the 8612xsv you get the same maps)
      * 8412xsv supports a lot more livescope / transducer technologies as well as HDMI input

    What about the GPSMAP being the only IPS screen here? That is a huge difference

      Are you asking if the livescope transducer will give side scan images? Or if the GPSMAP 1022 can support split screen?

    Gpsmap 943 or 1222 for a dedicated livescope unit?? 🧐

    • @AlexTimm
      @AlexTimm  Před rokem

      Screen size is the biggest difference maker between those two. If you are using on a boat you'd love that 1222. If you plan on using on a kayak or ice fishing the 943 is the way to go. If you plan on a little of everything the 943. 👍👍
