LIMITATIONS
neck check is not considered the most accurate or reliable way to identify thyroid disease.
You can have serious thyroid disease if you have a completely normal neck check specially retrosternal. On the other hand, a major growth can often be a sign of an easily treatable condition, such as an iodine deficiency.
neck palpation (the manual inspection of the neck) was able to detect thyroid nodules in only 11.6% of cases.
Lumps in the neck can be caused by thyroid disease, and they can also be caused by a variety of other conditions, such as lymph node enlargement, lymphoma, an infectious abscess, or a traumatic injury.
Because many types of neck and thyroid cancer do not produce a palpable masses, it is important to have *regular check-ups with your doctor
BENEFIT :
A neck check can be especially valuable if you have a mass that is growing or changing in size or shape. Many masses can be hard to detect either visually or with your fingers.
You will need A mirror and glass of water
Thyroid Growth can be,
A goiter (swelling) can be found on one side of the thyroid or on both sides.
Nodules AND LUMPS --- usually round in shape and move with the gland when you swallow. You may feel the nodule rolling underneath your fingertips or see it move when you swallow.
If you find any lumps or swelling in this area, talk to your doctor. As noted earlier, lumps or nodules on the thyroid gland do not necessarily mean that you have a thyroid hormone disorder or cancer. Thyroid nodules are very common and often do not cause any other issues.

Stand in front of a mirror so that you can see your neck and focus on the lower-front portion of your neck above the collarbones and below the voice box (larynx). Your thyroid gland is located in this area of your neck. Remove any items, such as a scarf, necktie, jewelry, or turtleneck that could block your view of your neck. If you use a hand-held mirror, direct it to focus on the lower-front portion of your neck.
Gently extend your neck back, slightly pointing your chin toward the ceiling, so that you can elongate the view of your neck.
With your neck slightly extended back, take a sip water and swallow. This action will move the position of your larynx forward, which will allow you to better visualise the shape of your thyroid gland, helping expose irregularities.
The thyroid gland is a small, butterfly-shaped organ located in the lower front of the neck, situated just above your clavicle (collarbone) and below your larynx (voice box).
As you swallow, look for any enlargements, lumps, protrusions, or anything that is off centre.
repeat the process again, swallowing another mouthful of water, and observing the structures in your neck a few times.
As you swallow, look at your neck. Check for any bulges or protrusions in this area when you swallow. Reminder: don’t confuse the Adam’s apple with the thyroid gland. The thyroid gland is located further down on your neck, closer to the collarbone.
Gently touch the area around your thyroid gland to try to palpate (feel) any enlargement, bumps, or protrusions. To differentiate between the thyroid and the other structures of your neck:
Slide your finger down the midline of your neck. The first hard structure you will hit is the thyroid cartilage leading to the Adam's apple.
As you continue to move your finger downward, you will next encounter another bit of cartilage called the cricoid ring, which encircles the trachea (windpipe).
Two digits below this is the thyroid isthmus (the tissue that connects the two lobes). To each side of this are your thyroid glands.
You may want to repeat this process several times.
How should your thyroid feel?
“It is usually painless,”
“If it is tender, that could mean that a tumor is growing relatively fast, which could be a warning sign. On the other hand, there are a lot of things that could cause discomfort in the thyroid gland, like inflammation, so pain is not necessarily a good or bad sign.
Follow up with your doctor.
If you find lumps or protrusions of any sort, you should definitely let your doctor know for further evaluation.
Follow up diagnostic tests may include
Ultrasound, blood hormone tests, or CT scan.

Finding a thyroid nodule does not mean you have cancer.

Dr, you have explained the symptoms of thyroid & it's test procedure, remedies ete in a very simple way like a good teacher. We are many ways benefitted by your lectures. Thank you for this. I have been detected hyper thyroid. One very small node on the left side. My tsh value is .005. & value of T3 & T4 is normal now after taking Neomercazole 5 for last 2 months. Initially the value of TSH was .005 & the value of T3 &T4 were high. What shall I do now? Pl suggest.

Namaste mam. My son is 13 year old. He is suffering from hyperthyroid. In year 2020 his tsh is 0.01 then doctor started carbimazole 5mg after one year the tsh level will increased 4.5 so doctor stop the medicine. After 8 month again the tsh level is down as 0.05.
Doctor again started carbimazole and says it will better if the gland should operate and take it out.
Because when medicine stopped the tsh relapse. What can i do. Some doctor says it is not necessary.
