- It’s a year since millions in the US were blocked from accessing an abortion, and the debate is as divisive as ever.
The reversing of the Roe v Wade ruling last summer was a controversial moment - both for those who believe termination ends an innocent life, and for those who feel any restrictions breaches a woman’s right to control her own body.
In a joint investigation for BBC Newsnight and Our World, Anna Collinson has travelled across two neighbouring - but very different - US states to see how restrictions on abortion are impacting America.

Should a rapist face the death penalty or one of his offspring? We are not responsible for the sins of our fathers. If you found out that a friend was the result of a rape would you tell them that they should have been killed before they were born?

The 39 books of the old testament that they share in deeming sacred alongside Christians have so little dialogue on the subject. Their Talmud even permits it. If the bible was a legal document, the ambiguity would favor pro-choice people. That's how the law works. To add to that, the instances where ending a pregnancy is mentioned is in a hypothetical regarding adultery where termination of the fetus is prescribed. There's also ample dialogue in the bible that life starts after the baby escapes the birth canal and not before. None of this should matter since America is not a theocracy. It's just plain immoral to impose religious belief on others, including made up religious belief. Your hypothetical is also very disingenuous. Of course it would be rude to say that about someone that was the result of rape. It's not hard to walk and chew gum though. You can simultaneously show that person respect and believe that women have the right to choose. You're oversimplifying a massive and pivotal part of woman's life here. I went to school with a girl who was adopted. My mother administered the adoption. The girl's mother considered abortion but kept the baby obviously and went the adoption route. The girl grew up to be pro-choice and is still friends with her birth mom. Yeah, I know. Nuance is so frustrating and complicated 😅

I'd respect their views if the same people were stood outside care homes and adoption agencies offering support to the babies who have been born. There i said it.
Many of them do.. Some even create programs that support parents-to-be in every way including financially. US needs better care and support for mothers in difficult situations, but it's not like those who are against abortion don't care about the mother. They simply also care about the baby.
They offer adoption and foster help.
Pregnancy crisis centers are everywhere funded by those against abortion.

@@lauracee5081 if the baby will not survive it does not matter if it is born in nine months or if a birth is induced in 6th or 7th month, the baby would either way die once it is born, and the mother has to go through the traumatic experience of giving birth to a dead baby. The option for that to happen earlier helps the mother by giving her more time to recover and to prevent any complications for her. She would still have to give birth to it but won't have to carry it for two-three months extra knowing it will die anyway. There's nothing Christian about making people suffer and taking freedom from people. That's why hell is full of righteous Christian's like her.
It's not allowing the mother to carry to term, it's forcing the mother to do so. It's being legally required. It's not compassion, it's oppression.
You're right a woman should have full control over her own body but we all have the right not to be killed before we're born. The problem is you can't have both of those things so you've got to choose which of those things is worse.
In MOST cases SHE CHOSE to spread her legs open and take that risk to get pregnant. Only less than 1% of unwanted pregnancy is due to rape. The vast majority of women made a conscious decision to take that risk and should deal with the consequences of their actions. If a guy consented to sex but didn't want kids and one was made by accident, HE is forced to deal with the consequences and so should women.

A lot of Europeans find it bizarre that Americans think that non military gun ownership is a good thing especially hand guns but the USA is a democracy and it's their choice. A woman I knew got pregnant, was overjoyed UNTIL the diagnosis of CANCER was made.
Because abortion was not legally allowed, she DIED, so did her son.
The family of two girls and her loving husband lost her.

My own great-grandmother had an abortion when doctors were so ignorant about reproduction, they had no idea how to help. She died at 93 years old, yes, but couldn't have another pregnancy because it would kill her.

Abortion is when the mother willfully killed her unborn baby though she has no danger of whatsoever in delivering the fetus.
Natural causes are not man-made causes. That woman could have had her cancer treated, why not? there are plenty of cases having given birth while having cancer, but anyway, abortion is not a right and that was my comment about. For example, taking a driving licence is not a right, it´s a procedure.

I got a bilateral salpingectomy (tubes completely removed) about a months ago. My doctor is amazing and did it for me without "husband's approval" or making sure I had kids already (I don't). I finally made the decision to get it done because of the lack of abortion healthcare in America. I never want to be pregnant in this country. I didn't want to be pregnant anyway, but it would be a nightmare having an unwanted pregnancy now. So I got my tubes taken out.
Based on how upset you seem at the prospect of being unable to kill your own children in the case you do get pregnant, I think it's for the best.

Anyone who really believes abortion is murder and wants to prevent it would support birth control counseling, low cost birth control covered by healthcare, sex education, regardless of age. They would also support Universal prenatal and postnatal healthcare, provide healthcare to children, and support subsidized non-profit high quality daycare. To give that baby the “every chance at life”. I have never, ever, heard any pro-life politician or political spokesperson voice support for any of these measures that would easily prevent millions of abortions.

"You can say that's God's plan" - I didn't mention anything religious, doesn't need to be brought into the discussion. I mentioned the facts that we know from science. Laws are based on facts and ethics. The fundamental and most significant fact of the discussion is that human life begins at conception (the "fetus" is a living, growing, individual human being). There are of course other facts to consider, but the ethics must be understood with that one always in mind.

One woman had to wait for the inevitable miscarriage which was very painful. Putting that simple clause in means women aren't allowed an abortion unless they're at deaths door. So even if it's necessary doctors will still be hesitant. They would have to appeal before and do you know how slow that process would be? All the while an innocent woman is needlessly in pain and enduring more damage to her body.
And even if abortion due to health reasons are small (even though there a great number of women who have these stories) that doesn't mean they don't exist and they should just be ignored. @@sjn7688 A human baby is not a teenager. A human toddler is not an adult. A human embryo is not a newborn baby. SO WHAT? There are differences in all the stages of the life of a human being. Health of the mother accounts for less than 5% of all abortions. Money and "not the right time for a child" are horrible excuses for a man or a woman to kill a child, born or unborn. Killing a child, born or unborn, has the same main result - i.e. a young human being is denied a chance at a full and productive life. That is obviously why abortion needs to be illegal.
I appreciate how humanized this news piece has been, but I also want to know the data; have partial or full hysterectomies gone up since the ban? Have women been dying more due to pregnancy complications? Maybe a sharp uptick in new babies being released to the state? Mental health issues? Substance abuse issues? Have women been moving out of these anti-abortion states? If they can't move... Are there underground abortion providers again?

They're collecting the data. The people that did this don't believe research and facts.
Why exactly did the Republicans objecting to the Clinton-pushed Roe v. Wade law? The legal objection was to change the term from 9 months to a normal term (around 24 weeks), and to allow each individual State to determine abortion laws based on local votes. It had nothing to do about banning it nationwide - unless the American public wants to.
And why? Roe v. Wade allowed women to carry a baby to full term, abort it in the last minute right before birth. The truth was that in some states women were encouraged by Planned Parenthood, for money, to be incubators for the Clinton-legalized baby-organ trade carrying babies for 9 months simply so hospitals could profit from the organ trade in the millions. The Rep's argued that this turned abortion into mu_der since the baby was fully conscious at 9 months. Baby organs were openly traded and sold for enormous profits by hospitals across America - a trade considered illegal around the world....

I had an abortion. I’m happy I did it, I would do it again. Obtaining it was stressful and expensive. About three weeks into the pregnancy it seemed like I might not be able to get the procedure in time so I tried to hang myself. I nearly succeeded. My partner got to me in time and in the end I was able to get the abortion. I would have tried to die again if I had been forced to stay pregnant. Some people shouldn’t be moms, some peoples dna shouldn’t be passed on. My mental health is trash, my whole family has mental health problems. Why would anyone want to put that on a child?

But that is the thing medical bills are expensive and insurrection company are not cheap and don't always pay for medical bills like giving birth. So, retail companies love to put children clothing, nappies, formulas and toys up very high. Then you got other bills like gas, electric, water, mortgages, and more like food are expensive enough and that means parents work longer hours for very little pay and skip meals so their children can get, sleep and go to school.
Also, the number of child abuse is far worse as some people only have children to get benefits and not love, care and be a parent to a child that would love them until that uncaring, and abusive parents kill them. Abortion actually saves lives and dying in their mother's arms is more worse because that is physical abuse to the woman.

My ex-husband told me because he is my husband he can tell me what to do like have seven+ children and to not get a tattoo and ruin my body. Those who bore on about the “rights of the unborn” seem to be overestimating human life. I’m willing to bet that if you ask 100 people randomly whether they would have wanted to be born (knowing what we do as humans), the vast majority of them would decline the offer. Invariably, it’s those holy rollers who adhere to primitive scriptures written by men thousands of years ago who cause all the trouble here. People are so ignorant about the argument behind these laws. Why exactly did the Republicans objecting to the Clinton-pushed Roe v. Wade law? The legal objection was to change the term from 9 months to a normal term (around 24 weeks), and to allow each individual State to determine abortion laws based on local votes. It had nothing to do about banning it nationwide - unless the American public wants to. That's based on individual opinions.
And why? Roe v. Wade allowed women to carry a baby to full term, abort it in the last minute right before birth. The truth was that in some states women were encouraged, for money, to be incubators for the Clinton-legalized baby-organ trade carrying babies for 9 months simply so hospitals could profit from the organ trade in the millions. The Rep's argued that this turned abortion into mu_der since the baby was fully conscious at 9 months. My deepest condolences go out to this woman with a miscarriage. No matter what, this is a very difficult time that I’ve walked through with many of my patients. This example is ridiculous though. I’m a medical doctor and the safest way for a miscarriage to pass is naturally. If this woman is passing the products of conception naturally, this is the best medical option. Mifepristone/misoprostol are the second line treatment options for a pregnancy loss before 12 weeks. Dilation and curettage are third line treatment. This patient had the best outcome after a sad happenstance.
I’m a physician as well. How in the hell are you justifying your statement that allowing a miscarriage to pass naturally is the safest?
The risk of misoprostol is far lower than the risk associated with waiting for miscarriage to pass naturally due to the increased risk of retained fetal tissue or the increased risk of infection from a decaying body. It could take between 1-2 weeks for her progesterone levels to sufficiently drop to cause the menses to start, mate.
Also, you seem to be ignoring the impact of her mental health advocating for “natural” if the patient wants to get the body out of her and move on with her grieving process.
I have serious doubts that you are an OBGYN, let alone a “medical doctor”.

I've had my babies and can no longer have kids. When they overturned Roe, they made it so all women have less rights then dead bodies. If we are treating a foetus as an actual fully formed human being then surely the doctors who perform then will be murderers too, if the mother suffers some stress and loses the baby by her boss being mean to her the they could be up for murder too. If the woman has an accident and falls over and loses the baby would this be then treated as manslaughter. So many questions to ask and why in the name of god do they still have executions and use the false guise of saying that a baby s innocent. Surely a life is a life regardless of how innocent they are. So hypocritical.
