Texas abortion law: 'I waited for my daughter to die so I wouldn't die' - BBC News

  • Five women who say they were denied abortions in Texas, US, despite facing life-threatening health risks, have sued the state over its abortion ban.
    Texas bars abortions, except for medical emergencies, with doctors facing up to 99 years in jail for violations.
    The lawsuit claims that many doctors are refusing the procedure even in extreme cases, for fear of prosecution.
    One of the five women, Amanda Zurawski speaks to the BBC’s Christian Fraser about the emotional pain she faced when seeking an abortion following life-threatening complications with her pregnancy.

    My wife had an abortion because our baby was diagnosed with a severe skeletal dysplasia on the 21 week ultrasound. She had a severely small rib cage, undeveloped lungs and would have suffocated to death if carried to term. The abortion had to be approved by the hospitals ethics committee. All late abortions are done for dire reasons. We don’t need more laws regulating this.

    • @MyDuckSaysFucc
      @MyDuckSaysFucc Před rokem +50

      Exactly. The people worried about the death part are so simple minded - no human being deserves to be born in such a state of suffering, let alone the fact that they would only exist for a short time anyway. Abortions are sometimes ethically necessary and even in the states with the most protections on abortion, it is taken very seriously especially once the fetus in more developed.

      @@wordforever117 the terminally ill person has lived a life and had a family (and even a terminally ill person can ask for euthanasia, he can also be unplugged if unconscious with no hopes waking up, it’s always a hard decision for the family, but so is abortion) whereas the baby that will die a few weeks after being born will experience nothing than suffering.
      Moreover I think everyone would agree that a baby will understands suffering much more than an less developed fœtus, so it’s probably more humane to abort it. *On top of that,* you forget that carrying the baby puts a severe strain of the mother’s body so I don’t see the point of giving birth to a baby that will die a few weeks afterwards. You have to realize that no matter wether you abort or not, the fœtus/baby will die (the only difference is that the baby will die only a few months later, and the body of the mother will suffer from giving birth).

    • @llawliet5767
      @llawliet5767 Před rokem +1

      @@wordforever117 the embryo develops by consuming the nutrients off from the mother’s body so your comparison is all over the place.
      There is a common and interesting analogy about abortion : let’s say we tie up a very ill person to your back and connect your blood vessels to his, so that he can live off from your nutrients until he’s completely healed after 9 month. Will you cut him off of your back (which will result in his death) or let him consume your nutrients so that he can live (as you see the debate isn’t as simple as « is it moral to kill some innocent person ? », since it’s not completely safe).
      Now imagine this very I’ll person will die either way (with only a few month gap) regardless of whether you let him live off of your blood or not. Will you let him on your back or cut him off ?

    These barbaric laws are targeting young American women of child bearing age. The state of Texas is practicing medicine without a license, which Is illegal and amoral. Also, targeting and discrimination against women and denying life saving health care is unconstitutional and a violation of human rights. Thank you for your intelligent and compassionate reporting. If women in the US are being denied modern comprehensive and life saving maternal and reproductive health care, they are citizens without full rights and this is taxation without representation. Let me tell you TO all those that do not approve of the right to have an abortion.
    First of all its not compulsory,
    Second and embrión it’s not a baby until it’s born, whether you like it or not.
    Third , To have a baby in non suitable conditions, with no support in anyway just because you are obliged, that’s when real cruelty starts on the life’s of the baby and the mother..
    Fourth , A question for you . Are you or that government , going to support economically and in every aspect the basics of an upbringing? Or that’s when you end your ideals?
    Leaving the baby , and mother in utter poverty and misery , in many cases, ..good job!
    Because once it’s born and it’s a baby , then ,there something really important, the upbringing of a human being, something which you do not care on the least.OBVIOUSLY.
    Fourth , you are the living hypocrisy, for the same reason , you could not approve certain scientific studies(mother cells) but you do ! because you need them for your own personal health issues.
    Sixth , all the obvious medical reasons , when the pregnancy can become fatal for the mother and embryo..like an ectopic pregnancy.All The reasons why this women have sued that government.Something which in your views does not seemed to be even considered.
    And finally , this is personal.No one has an abortion “for pleasure or contraception” ITS traumatic.
    And if you lot , had a full filed life , you would not need to impose on others your fundamentalist ideas and your backward understanding of religious thought , you ..fanatic freaks.

    Yeah, the land of the free... This woman would have qualified for abortion in Iran, Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar and Zimbabwe, among many other countries. These are some of the more restrictive countries regarding abortion, yet they all allow abortions under these medical conditions. The USA always looks down on China and Russia, but both these countries allow abortion in almost all cases. Indeed, an oppressive society...
    I'm a former healthcare worker, and I left the profession when I was prohibited from treating a child without parental consent due to some stupid law. There were two options - certain death or treatment with a 7% statistical probability of failure. Parents chose the former after about 5 hours of a team of doctors trying to convince them otherwise. They were convinced it was their daughter's time to die, and we shouldn't interfere by defiling her body with our medical procedures. Nonetheless, the law respected those parents' wishes to refuse treatment, even if it resulted in certain death. Society lost a bright young teenager that day, as well as an ER doctor.
    No law should prevent a doctor from performing their duties to society. You can feel how you want about elective abortions, but if a medical professional determines it's the best option, don't stand in our way. These lawmakers didn't spend years in medical school.

I recommend searching up how different abortion procedures are performed, it is one of the most horrific things I have ever read (I was pro-choice until I researched what actually happens). I am so sorry and scared with what is happening in the USA over a woman's right to choose if she wants to have a child. We are at a cross roads in society. Populations are declining in socially developed countries and we have been propping up our traditional systems for economic growth through the use of immigration. We are moving towards a point where if we are to continue to grow our economies we need to either tackle the declining birthrate or develop a better system of importing labor, one that benefits both the countries sending and receiving populations.
    Our greatest asset in the UK is our knowledge and the amazing systems we have developed to deliver it; our schools, colleges, companies and universities that train our young people. I am a firm believer that by growing our education sector we can solve both these issues.

    Who will provide for the children who would otherwise have died due to changes in the Abortion law? If you care so strongly about the preservation of their lives then it's only fair that you take on the responsibility for their welfare and upbringing. So?

    Roe v Wade was not a law, it was a case tried by the supreme court back in '73. Once the Supreme Court rules on a case, that is used as a blueprint for lower courts so those courts (particularly the judges) don't waste their time and resources. In this specific case, lower courts had no incentive to accept cases regarding abortion because their ruling would be overturned, given enough appeals (district to circuit to supreme). Such rulings are sometimes called "Case Law" but they are not an official part of the constitution, they are an example of how the current Supreme Court Justices interpret the constitution. For something to be an actual law, it must go through the House and Senate with majority approval and Executive branch (president) approval. Failing presidential approval, it goes back to the Legislative branch where it must get a supermajority in order to override the presidential veto. Only after years or decades of revisions and voting will an official amendment actually be made.
    All the Supreme Court did in this instance was to say that that the current sitting justices do not agree with the previous ruling and it is once again open for individual states to regulate (or not) and lower courts to figure out for themselves, should a case be presented to them.
    Personally, I believe this is an issue that shouldn't be regulated one way or the other. However, it seems there are plenty of people that have to force their way into other people private affairs so protecting a persons right to make their own decision is better than denying them autonomy with regards to such a major decision.

    Islam is a moderate religion. If a mother's life is in danger and her doctor takes responsibility, then it's lawful. Otherwise, it's not lawful, and indeed, it's a big sin.

    But, this situation is not an abortion! Someone is confusing medical terminology! Either the news reporters, or local doctors who don’t care about patients, but rather about political issues. Please don’t misuse these situations for your political agenda.
