Skeleton reveals early humans had sex with Neanderthals - BBC News

- In 1998, the skeleton of a 29,000-year-old child was unearthed in Portugal’s Lapedo valley.
The child had both early modern human and Neanderthal features, including the chin and lower arms of a modern human but the jaw and build of a Neanderthal.
Researchers believed that the child's anatomy was the result of mixed Neandertal-early modern human ancestry.
Now new archaeological and DNA techniques may hold the answer.

I'm not sure anyone will be surprised by this. We wouldn't have Neanderthal DNA in us otherwise.
@Felix Smith More like the editor liked the click bait title
I believe the discovery of the body happened prior to the DNA studies that confirmed mixed ancestry in Europeans and Asians. It was probably one of the pieces of evidence that lead to further analysis
But that skeleton was found before those Neanderthal genes in our DNA were identified.
@@Southpaw128 That's what I get from it too. The video says the discovery took place in 1998, and the Neanderthal genome mapping project wasn't completed until 2013 - according to the Neanderthal genome project entry in Wikipedia. The title of the video is pretty click-baity though, since it uses "reveals" instead of "revealed."
@Felix Smith Yes, should be "revealed", since this took place in 1998.

Archeologists looking at the skeletons: "Yeah, they were definitely boning."
hearing about the child’s burial makes me somewhat happy. they were loved, and their people buried them with that love. humanity has kept that trait, even though we might not be the same species as the people responsible for that burial. is that overly sentimental? maybe, but it’s a nice thought.
I agree. Even though we have not heard of animals burying their family members, we know that elephants for example visit the places where their loved ones died and touch the bones. Love is wonderful to know and see displays of!
we are the same species
Humans had children with Neanderthals and Denisovans, and those children had children. That's why we all have Neanderthal DNA.
@@jturtle5318 but it might have been a Neanderthal who buried that child. That would be interesting.
Neanderthals are known to have practiced burial rituals. They were far more smart and cultured than they previously received credit for.
Considering how labor and resource intensive shroud-making was back then, they gave this child a costly and thoughtful burial. This demonstrates how much they cared for it, and how much grief they must have passed through.
Wyte people mated with cave people 😂😂😂😂😂😂 My race is 99.9% human.
I wonder how much we underestimate their ability to communicate and their social hierarchies, interpersonal relationships and culture. To have put so much thought into the burial does display love and care. Possibly we are giving the whole population far less credit for organisation and intelligence than their due. Just because it was a long time ago?
I love this comment and I completely agree! ^_^
Yep, they’ve had a bit of a bad rap. I always thought there was more too it
If two individuals can reproduce and have a valid offspring, then they aren't different species.
Precisely!

@@shainatrotter7481 Tigrons and ligers are sterile as well.
This is not even close to true, there is multiple modern day examples of this.
I think it's wonderful that even though this child only lived to be four years old, he taught us so much about ourselves thousands of years after his death.
And the way he was buried shows that his family loved him and cared about him.
Imagine how embarrassing it will be to find out what kids do today thousands of years in the future.
I second that. Evolution is a big fat myth & ISLAM is the word of GOD .. Scientifically humans cannot learn talking on their own unless they hear phonetic alphabet from others, that's why deaf babies cannot talk when they grow up despite having normal organs of speech .. Real science proves evolution theory is a big fat myth.
N.B. Never understood why interbreeding, especially repeatedly over long periods, was only ever considered reluctantly. To deny that is to deny human nature. Not a dignified idea admittedly but let's face it - humans, especially males, will engage in sex pretty much whenever the opportunity presents itself. We aren't exactly famously selective.

What I don’t get is that if Neanderthals went extinct 40000+years ago, how did this kid have a Neanderthal parent 29000 years ago?
Most neaderthal and human fossils aren’t full human or neanderthal.
Somewhere, there is mistaken information. If the radio carbon dating is as accurate as is claimed, then the date that Neanderthals were here must be reexamined.
Because it’s all stupid. They’re just humans. People have different skulls, doesn’t make them a different species. My heads different to someone else’s oof. Certain races have different skeletal structures, doesn’t make them a different species. A lot of it is a bit stupid.
This child shows Neanderthal-like features. He was not a Neanderthal. Genetic characteristics persist for thousands of years after the introduction of new genes into the pool, especially when groups are small.
I'd imagine that Neanderthals did die out at that time, but that you had a very mixed people living in a community (or communities) that had significant quantities of Neanderthal dna.
This has been known for years and years. We’re basically the same species, it’s no surprise this happened

In pondering the subject, I often wondered if early modern human and neanderthal saw no more difference in each other than we today see different skin colors or facial features.
Their lifestyles, customs etc. must have been so different that they had to yield to the “us vs. them” view of the world.
@@williscopeland7114 Yes, Neanderthals had a different lifestyle. They were rowdy at the football matches, they never dressed up for Sunday dinner, and were known to come into work late on Monday. All things that irritated their Cro-Magnon neighbors.
I agree that Humans and Neanderthals must have been pretty similar. We think of humans today as being intelligent beings while Neanderthals were cavemen. In reality everyone was a caveman in those days, scrambling to survive in a primitive fashion.
@@dlewis8405 Right. And caves were a pretty smart place to hole up.

It occurred to me watching this video that our ancestors, living in small tribes throughout Europe, would probably not have identified Neanderthal neighbours as being any other than fellow beings. Doesn't it raise the question though that Neanderthal partners must have been able to communicate? in other words talk?
:) well making love, isn't that the ultimate language?
Yes they could talk.
Homo Sapiens would have recognised they were different (because we are naturally good at seeing those differences), but it appears as though those differences in appearance didn't affect interbreeding.
It doesn’t raise the question. Neanderthal had a voice box. It is certain that they talked. Maybe there are still modern words rooted originally from them.
@@rsmith6366and honestly as well, as populations (in modern terms) of both species were probably relatively low, it absolutely stands to reason that they would have interbred if they knew they could. Can’t be all that different biologically if they can successfully have children together AND that those children DIDNT become sterile (like in a mule situation). It’s completely logical and without all that interbreeding we wouldn’t have our own modern species today. Knowing that our DNA is actually made up of a patchwork of similar species DNA is actually kind of comforting. Like, we all made it in the end. Just my take though 🤷♀️

I think that in prehistoric times, Cro Magnons, Neanderthals and Denisovans didn’t even recognize each other as separate species or as non humans or as subhumans but rather as other humans. So you’re a group of Cro Magnons wandering through unknown wilderness and you come across a group of Neanderthals you didn’t say to one another, “Hey look there’s a group of Neanderthals” or whatever name you used for them but rather was like, “Hey there’s people here! Let’s introduce ourselves to them and maybe they can let us join their community.”
Perhaps their attitudes were different, very different.
How naive. The tendency of humans, and I’m sure the Cro Magnons et al as well, has been to avoid with mistrust any strangers. For them, the world was divided into us and them.

*Is it possible that since early humans and the Neanderthals did look so similar at the time, especially compared to any other animals either group had come into contact with before, that they possibly did not think of each other as different species? Maybe just saw their differences exactly the same as the small differences from each individual person, like size of nose, eyes, hair color, height, body type, genetic variations that all species have from individual to individual? Maybe they recognized them as the same species. I really think that could be possible, especially when you take into consideration that this would be the ONLY time either group most likely had come into any type of contact with anything that looked remotely similar to them; they wore clothing, they had social groups, they had family dynamics, they hunted for food, ect. It would have been very easy to just mistake these people as just another group of people who are the same species as you, from both the early humans and the Neanderthals. Also, after thinking about the serious limitations they had back then when it comes to thought processes, like how obviously science and genetics were obviously nothing they could even think of to understand that even though they were both so similar they were different species all together. Something to definitely seriously consider.*
I think being an archeologist would be so challenging .Hours and days and years of not finding anything significant and constant cleaning categorizing and cataloging in hopes to find that one great discovery you may never find.

From all the "superstars" Dr's of archeology, anthropology and paleontology... Now it's common knowledge. Thanks to pioneers like them. ;-)
Come on, "human history" is constantly re written and just plain made up as they go to suit whatever agenda is being pushed at the moment. The "scientific community" lies to your face about what happened yesterday, are surprised by things from 100 years ago that dont fit their story and have no clue about what lies under buildings and towns established 200 years ago. But ya, they know what happened 29k years ago and are telling you truth about it. Hahaha.
Interesting, a fictional book series from the 70s discussed this. The author (Jean Auel), who was not an archeologist, anthropologist, or historian, had done a lot of research at the time. So apparently this information was known, but not accepted as truth?
I remember when the term used to be 'mated' when discussing anthropology. When we talk about 'having sex', the tone of the discourse has been lowered. Not surprising from the BBC.

Mated is a term commonly used when discussing none human animals.
It strikes me that the term "having sex" was used specifically to highlight the humanity of both participants, saying "mated" may suggest to the uninformed that this was some form of bestiality performed on "Ape-men".
Regardless both terms have the same meaning, there's no benefit to such prudishness.
