  • In this video you will see the startup of a 1977 Evinrude 6HP model 6704M outboard after long time storage.
    The only thing that was requiring attention was the leaking gearcase.

    Rick. Thank you very much indeed for sharing this video.ive just been given a Johnson Evinrude 1974 6 hp Outboard motor. She needs quite a lot of Tlc....I haven't a clue. But thanks to you sharing this I've a very good chance of achieving my goal because of you....Nice one.

      Parts are hard to find for an old motor like that. I always buying my outboard parts at crowleymarine.com they have parts for pretty much every genarations of boat motors.

    I always mix a qt. of gas with a strong dose of oil and sea foam. Gives it a good carb. clean and lubes everything up after a long storage period. Cheers!

    I have this same motor, a 1976. last month I tried and tried to start it after 15 years of sitting. No go. Not even a chug. I was thinking maybe I should shoot some oil into the cylinders before trying again?

    • @RickStuff
      @RickStuff  Před 3 lety

      Have check if there is a spark?
      Also before pulling the starter put some mix gas in the cylinder. I will help the carburator if it is a little dirty.

      Make sure the air valve is open on the tank and prime the line with the pump until the pump is very hard.

    Hey Pal. Great vid- I love it. I have a 1970 Evinrude hpr up on a stand ready to be looked at and cleaned up. I will use the gas like you did and clean it up. Im a newbie with working on engines- this one has not been started in 12-15 years for sure. All in tact though- Where do I even begin?

    • @RickStuff
      @RickStuff  Před 3 lety

      Start by pulling the startier make sure it is not seezed. After that try it. The carburator might gloged with old dried gasoline. The head gasket might be bad and the craink seals might be leaking or everytjing might work like a charm

    • @seancooley5246
      @seancooley5246 Před 3 lety

      @@RickStuff ok will do- if you are in MTL I am less than 1 hr from you- anyway, how will I know what the issue is while going through these steps?

    • @RickStuff
      @RickStuff  Před 3 lety

      If it is seezed it won't budge
      If carb is cloged no fuel will get into the engine.
      If the head gasket has a leak you will ear air wiseling when pulling the starter
      So first step if the engine is spining will be to replace the spark llug.
      After ghat pour some gasoline directly into the carb before pulling the starter. Don't forget to connect the gas tank with gas in it and prime yhe fuel line before starting.
      It should start. Do that 3 or 4 time. If ghe carb is fine the engine should suck gas from the tank.

      @@RickStuff Update- the starter is not seized. New Plugs in er- new gas line- its taking gas I can tell- Jus need to try it again tomorr as I think I flooded it!

    • @RickStuff
      @RickStuff  Před 3 lety +1

      Have you looked if there is a spark?
      Procedure;
      Remove the spark plug
      Connect in back to the cable
      Manage the spark plug to hold on the cylinder head
      Pull the starter and look at the spark plug gap if there is a spark
      DO NOT TOUCH THE SPARK PLUG NEITER THE CABLE CAP WHILE YOU PULL THE CORDE
