  • Here's my NEW - vintage outboard engine - a Johnson 6hp outboard motor from 1969 and doing a cylinder compression test to see if this old 6 horsepower outboard engine has enough compression in the two cylinders. This old outboard boat engine is a two stroke boat motor and essentially identical to a two stroke 1965 Evinrude Fisherman 6 hp outboard engine and is well suited for small boats like 12 and 14 foot boats.
    This old 2 stroke outboard is very good shape for being over 50 years old and these old Evinrudes and Johnson are still quite easily found and easy to get parts for!

    Got one last year from neighbor, hard used in marsh for duck hunting!! Was his grandpas forty bucks. Took it completely apart power head everything. Good thing I did all cooling passages blocked with sand. Rebuilt and replaced everything possible, still needs recoil spring if I can find it. Runs good it’s a 1971. Many many hours working on it but I’m retired and gives me something to do I enjoy👍

    70psi on that motor is perfectly fine. They weren’t high compression from the factory.
    I have refurbished well over 100 of those little 6hp Evinrude and Johnson’’s and they run fantastic on 70psi. In fact the best I have seen from those is 80psi. Those little 6’s are not fast but they run forever. Nice find!!

    That Lone Star boat is a gem. I’ve restored a couple fibreglass models (there story as a company is video worthy) and they have many beautiful designs

    I got a 1975, 4 horse Johnson going this summer, and it started out with 50, and 58 psi compression. After getting it running and enjoying it for a few trips, I checked again and both were now 85 psi. I did run Seafoam in the gas since it was a long dormant motor.

    I have the same motor but is 1966. My compression was in the 70’s as well. Once you get it running, run some fuel with Marvel Mystery oil and test compression at normal operating temp. After I did that my compression went to the 90’s. All the best, Jim from Georgia

      @@WayneTheBoatGuy I have a 79 Johnson I believe. It’s a 6hp also it has 70-68 psi on compression check fires right up needs carbs cleaned but I figured that would be plenty of compression on a little motor like that. Don’t you think?

    I ended up buying 4 different compression gauges until I found one that read correctly.
    Congrats on the motor Wayne! She’ll serve you well. I bought a 1968 that could be this one’s twin over the winter. Can’t wait to get it out

      I got a 70' that if I sat it down next to his (besides the slightly different graphics on the cowling) they would be hard to tell apart. The green goes so nicely with the "jon boat green". One of the best colors out of the 6hp's run in my opinion. Good luck with yours!

    I had an older Evinrude 4hp that came with a boat I bought. Compression was 60 on both cylinders, less than ideal by what most say. Engine started easy and ran great, I sold that to a buddy of mine 10 years ago. It still runs fine and is still at 60psi but, I do like to see higher numbers than that.

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  Před rokem

      It's funny because some people say they won't run at all below 90 or 100 - and then I hear your story - 60 psi is pretty low!

    • @All_A_Guy_Needs
      @All_A_Guy_Needs Před rokem +1

      In my experience low psi will run just fine. They’re just slower

    Hi Wayne, what compression tool do you use? I am after a reliable tester for my outboards.

  • @hammer9856
    @hammer9856 Před rokem

    That looks like a top find... It looks almost new. May need some parts replaced (fuel pump, water pump impellor), the carb cleaned. gear oil changed. and some other work cause it sat so long, but that is to be expected. But at this point I'd squirt some lube in the cylinders, put the muffs on, hook up some gas and see if she runs.

  • @Fljeff7
    @Fljeff7 Před rokem

    Best tested if engine has some running temperature to have the engine at expanded fittings of cylinder rings etc

  • @JCinematic
    @JCinematic Před rokem

    70 is not bad tho Wayne. I am sure if you get it running that compression number will soon climb as engines I know understand do not like sitting. Starting them on a monthly basis keeps them sweet and flushes out old fuel.

  • @AB-bg1or
    @AB-bg1or Před rokem +1

    Shoot a little two stroke oil in the cylinders. Those compression gauges are also notorious for not being accurate; especially the Harbor Freight models.

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  Před rokem

      That's why I am not very concerned with it only being 70

    • @BD-oo6ru
      @BD-oo6ru Před rokem

      Yes - there is a difference between 2 stroke oil for air cooled and water cooled engines. TCW3 is rated for water cooled engines like your outboard.

  • @BurchellAtTheWharf
    @BurchellAtTheWharf Před rokem

    75 psi is kinda low, might get 4-5 knots in a ten foot boat, more psi mean higher rpm under load which means more speed

    • @WayneTheBoatGuy
      @WayneTheBoatGuy  Před rokem +1

      Yeah - it might come up once I get it running again - but I’m not expecting too much - and I’m not too worried about speed
