@AstCharles I love your 1980 Crown. It reminds me of my sophmore to senior year in high school. Still sounds exactly the same. I remember always wanting to be a school bus driver and to this day, am still interested. Great video, and would LOVE to ride along with you someday.
i rode one of these to serior excursion a week ago, we had 8 buses, 2 crowns and bluebirds, and some saf-t liners, at first i was bummed to go in the "old" bus, but that changed quick, i love the manual shifting, and the rev matching, no sincro, loud, jerky ride, something modern buses don't have now
The legendary "pancake engine" in the middle of this glorious Crown! Yup this engine is a Detroit Diesel 6-71 inline 6cyl 2stroke housed mid-ship and lays flat on its side (hence the term pancake engine). A technological marvel to this present day.
today i was on my bus holcomb School Bus#83 on my way back from work, and just for the hell of it i had the young "Big Mark"13 year old teenager in me once again and put the window down and my left arm out hanging on to my blue, grey&white striped unisex hat out of the window letting it flap in the breeze as the bus drove on with me sitting in the back on right side dude!,that was fun!
Pajaro Valley Unified School District in Watsonville, Ca has at least 45 crowns left...from 1980 to about 89...I used to ride them when they were brand new, and now still see them around, even the one when i rode when i was a senior in high school......1982, bus 107.
@markdm4805 Thank you very much for the information. I will look up the PBM. I love the video of this members crown....I overheard the driver talkikng with the passenger about ' Pajaro'.....I used to ride the crowns from elementary up to high school in Pajaro Valley Unified School District. One of the first sure didn't sound diesel at all...and i remember it being very old...i would guess late 40's . This one reminds me of the new 1980 Crowns we got....exact same sound. Thanks alot !
THANK YOU! This reminds me of when I was a kid up through High School, our District had all Crowns until I was the late 80's when they started buying those crappy Blue Birds. Believe it or not, it sounds loud but they weren't. You did feel the power/torque underneath you though. "greeniron32" us full of it, the engine was the best part of my ride to and from school and on field trips!
@Jerrycobra Speaking of jerky, I bet here in Montreal the school buses probably have a smooth ride compared to the really jerky modern transit buses...
What is the PBM work party?? I have seen other older crowns in other youtube videos that show a few other crowns.....do they gather and shuttle people?? Would love to know more info about PBM..and when the party is...so i can go take pics of the old crowns!!
Were is the engine on this bus? if it is at the rear then is probably a 6v92 but if it is at the mid section then is probably a 6-71N , 6N71 or 6L71T Detroit.
I Had My Time On Some Crowns I Liked Chino Ca Buses 8 &13 They Were 68 & 67 Crown Cummins Diesels Do You Know It The Owners Have A You Tube Account ? They Are Nice I Road 4th Grade 10 Grade Last Time My Group Road A Crown My Grad 2007

Do They "Still" Make These Anymore?
Sadly not since 1991. But hey they’re well enough to stilllbe used - the very reason that they’re not made anymore
