- We used to say, "You could climb a tree in one of these, AND climb back down out of it!" They go to the mountains, through the snow, up / down a grade or through the desert without ever complaining. I was invited to check out a friend of mine's and even take it for a spin. What a fun day that was! Here's to the best buses made!

Great memories; brings back the old LAUSD Crowns. In 1966 I rode #10, a stinky, smoky Hall Scott gas bus, #80, a small-engine Detroit and in 1968, #1287, a fresh out of the box 5-speed Detroit.
I was always impressed by the loud engine and heat sitting in the very back seat. I also remember hills were somewhat of challenge for these buses. The international brand buses were automatic and would eat hills up!
have always loved the older Crown tandem buses.. Thanks for this video. Wish I can take one for a spin sometime
My absolute Favorite Bus Combo.. Crown... Big Cummins.. 10sp.. LOVE them.. Best Bus Ever
Oh yes sir!!! These are my favorite school buses. Nothing like a tandem axles Crown Supercoach, with a BIG Cummins 855T mid ship. :vD
I hope this can be kept running for many more years! The mighty Cummins never dies!
I need one of these in my life...
Great video, these Crown tandems were always my favorite buses from way back when I was a kid going to school in the early 70's in Garden Grove district. They had Cummins motors in those too but they might have been the non turbo 250`s. I even remember a few that were gas powered back then, probably old Hall Scotts that had their own distinct sound, thinking back they almost sounded straight piped. Nice shifting there too, would love to take one of these for a spin someday!
I remember those buses too! The tandems that Garden Grove had mostly had Cummins 220 or 250 non turbos. The non-tandem supercoaches either had Detroit 6N-71 engines or the same Cummins engine the tandems had, again no turbos were installed. The few buses that were straight piped with a Cummins 220 or 250 (bus 32, 33, 43, 69) would have a "snap" to them as they revved up. I miss those days. However, not all tandems had cummins. Bus 28 and 39 from GGUSD had a different engine model which I would like to know what it was if anyone is willing to enlighten me. It didn't rattle much like a classic Cummins would, but it had "off the line torque" that made it a smooth running bus. Can anyone tell me what other engine models were used?
you gotta love that Cummins engine in a tandem axle crown super coach series school bus
Beautiful bus.
Awesome, man. Keep the vids comin'! Subscribed!
I would imagine that the bus number is either 891 (Iron Mtn) or 892 (Amboy) from the Needles Unified School Dist. I drove the Iron Mtn route for years. Good bus!
Good Job, Brian! Nice shifting that RTO! :D
This is 892, I own 891.
Seems overkill for. School bus and that’s why I love it! 😈 bad ass school bus
For not driving a 10 speed in eight years he did a very good job. I have to laugh where 4th and 9th gears are located, not like your typical 5 speed where 4th gear is on top. Years a go I drove an international truck with a 2 speed axle and 4th gear was in the same location.
? When I was a kid I rode Rowland Unified School district busses they had 10 speed crowns and Gillics ranginging from 1969 to 1990 and all of there busses even the older 10 speeds had the same gear pattern as this video 4th abd 9th was were normally 5 and 10 would be they had to have specialty ordered them like that do you think this is a correct assumption even there 10 speed gillics old and newer ones was the same gear pattern !!! Let me know your thoughts thanks
thing was built like a semi and not like a superduty ford like they di today
#GoodTimes!!
Carrier A/C system that was custom made for crown.
Awesome! That might have been the last tandem made. If I recall, the last tandem ended up in Needles or Barstow, can't remember which one. What's his plan with this Crown?
I take that back...the last tandem Crown went to Okanogan, WA.
Cool! not as cool as a Thomas HDX, but still really cool!
+Dorian Built to outlast any mass produced Thomas HDX
tpembert too bad they don't make these crowns anymore. they could have some updates to make them better.
Any idea where that bus is now? I’d love to buy it - or one just like it!
Looks a little old school for an 89
Is that a synchromesh transmission, or are you just really fast and skilled at double-clutching!?
Is that a Trane air-conditioner in that bus? Does the air-conditioner in a 1989 school bus use R-22 like a residential central A/C system, or R-12 like other passenger vehicles of the era?
What does anyone think of the tandem version with an auto transmission?
what engine is that
Cummins NHHTC 300 Big Cam III, mated to a Fuller RoadRanger RT11610 10-speed manual transmission.
I'd like to know why the engine looks so odd.. that thing laying on its side?
Yes. It's called a pancake engine / configuration.
Bmilesonline how's that possible? with oiling and such? I have never seen one in that layout .. it's got me scratchin my head
It's made to operate that way. The oil pan is on the right side of the bus. The engine is technically on the left.
