Hello E39Source,
Thank you for a great video. I just fished doing my alternator and used your videos and others to make the job easier.
In the future, no need to remove radiator fan. Pull sway-bar mounts and it gives much more room.
I also removed the VANOS H.P. Accumulator bracket lower and it have me even more room.
NOTE: For reassembly, I had to remove the rubber insulator around the VANOS H.P. accumulator and install it between the holding brackets before I could slide in the accumulator as it just kept catching the front of the brackets.
Cheers,
Mr. P
I have a 2006 e60 m5. I do all my own work...and with no manual. Your channel is a huge resource for me!
I just did this job on the floor of my shop. I was getting the battery light in the info area on the dash. No charge . Alternator. My alternator looked like the first original. It was stamped Valeo and bmw. BmW wanted almost 900 dollars us and a care charge of 300 dollars also for a reman. I found the original Valeo online with the right part number for 300 dollars and it was shipped same day. BMW would have taken 5 weeks from Germany. Huge help bro!
FyI steps that made it easier for me. I took both sides of the VANOS? Bracket off and it gave me way better access to the alternator. I could get a small prybar in there to get the alternator out. It wasn't coming out. After that the alternator moved pretty easy in there. Got it backwards and removed the wires and dropped it out. I left front bumper on and swaybar. I.only took the back belt off the alternator pully also and that was it! My fan had those tabs also but no.biggie.from the bottom. I could stick.my arm.and flip them.
Cheers and thanks!
I got a question n need help so I bought a bmw m5 2006 e60 the problem is that I bought a new battery 🔋 and when I leave on for a while kills the battery 🔋 I need a good mechanic and recommendation out here san bernardino
That looked hellish. Good ol' BMW.
That ”cylinder” is Pressure accomulator, it is what is says. It cost around $450. And for the hood locks it is better to take of those two bolts (M6x12) esch side to remove the frame. Does not need to remove any horns and stuff. Much easier. 👍
Why didnt you change the other pully components? My idler pulley is making noise, those tensioners are really expensive dont want to replace them if I dont need to
All owners of e39 6cyclinders are LOL’ing right now as it’s so easy to change the alternator
What headlights did you go with? I have a 2007 E64 M6 production date April 2007. I want the yellow turn signal to be gone (Euro Spec) and for the Angel eyes to be bright.
On the E60? Just stock LCI front Hella headlights.
Thank you for the video. Do you think the original alternator need to be replaced even when it works fine at the moment?
I have a 2006 BMW M5 V10- third gear engine malfunction and I think it might be the alternator that is part of this problem. Thank you.
ISTA has a code 002788 and code 0027D0
DME: Fuel pressure, setpoint/actual-valve comparison at maximum pressure
DME: Fuel-pressure control adaptation
If the charging system is functioning properly, I wouldn't replace the alternator. Your codes indicate a fuel related issue.
Yeah those clips on the side of the fan are a pain. I have been able to fold mine back in properly, but it is a pain. The one on the left is a huge pain. I think I might have did it one time from underneath.
Woah e39 with a v10.
I love your e60, would you be interested in trading for an e46 M3 ZCP?
Now I wanna know what that cylinder is/does.
Wait wait wait. I need to remove the headlights to change the alternator?
No, they were out for other projects.
what is the mileage on this car
Right about 101,500.
No need to remove , horns, or radiator cover or radiator fan to get alternator out. All extra work. But it seems like you had to for the belts. Also you need to completely remove accumulator bracket.
I can't imagine doing the alternator with all of that in the way. I would go as far as to say it'd be nearly impossible.
E39Source, LLC it’s possible I have done it on a M6. Maybe there is more room on the E63 to allow clearance for the alternator.
Wasn't this car for sale ? :D
It was, but these aren't worth anything anymore so we decided to keep it.
This would have came in handy 2 months ago.
Once the top of the bracket that squeezes the black thing you can remove the 2 more 10mm bolts holding the bracket. This makes dropping the alternator staight down easy. Install the alternator and install the bracket.
Why do you use TIS if you don't like it...just repair bmw s without it
It's a decent general overview for a job, that often includes a torque spec or two. I always like to arm myself with at least something before tackling a DIY.
What a nightmare this car is...
