Man, you hit the nail on the head with so much you said here. One thing you left out, right under the throttle actuators, sits idle actuators..at about $600 a pop. But if you are in there, do them. I have the same car, same Indianapolis Red, with the Portland interior. Bingo, people buy these used, run the hell out of them, don't fix the abuse issues, sell them, then the next owner goes on the forums and says they are junk. They don't wanna pay what 10w60 oil costs, so they make excuses...so and so says 10w40 is fine, or whatever. I believe rod bearings go fast, because people have no idea how to warm this V10 properly, use the wrong oil etc...IF, the bearing was the problem, don't you think BMW would have fixed that way before now?...I don't know, I have had two, yes they are not cheap to work on, but if you want cheap, but a Ford/Chevy and drive what EVERYONE else has. I use only Redline 10w60, Redline75w140 limited slip diff oil, Redline fluid for the SMG

Spot on! Well said! I use liquid moly products. Just my preference and I have had no issues. I also had a few things done as soon as I purchased the car. I did my rod bearings the first week with ARP bolt. I used the BE bearings. This was done at a certified shop. My self I did the spark plugs, coil packs, both ionic current modules, fuel pump, fuel filter, I have the throttle bottle actuators and the idle actuators and I have had them for a year now but have not had the time to put them on yet but will very soon. Just out a brand new set of Continental contact O2 sport on her literally last Friday. I just order the Pcv valves, thermostat, and the pinion seal and diff oil even though it’s not leaking once I go under the hood that will be it for a bit. I have not replaced the charcoal fuel filter canister yet either. That will be in the near future as well. Next big purchase is brakes and rotors. Ugh. That’s a little ticket. Oh I did by 2 of the O2 sensors. (1) upstream and (1) down stream

Yea, when I was in mine, throttle actuators, I did the idle version as well

I had my bank one idle actuator fail so I replaced both pair. I was told the previous owner replaced one of the throttle actuators but they both looked the same age to me. They are working fine so I’ll replace them later.

@@Matthias_Fischer this car WILL leave you stranded at some point. Both of my vehicles are sorted at the moment. I Just know the E60 M5 has left me stranded in the past. @@Matthias_Fischer it's a convenience thing for me. If my one M5 was down I would be stuck. And economically speaking you may be right but why have one toy when you can have/afford two? ;-) I have had my M5 for 8 years now. At one time I was running a c-class as my daily and the M5. Then moved on to an E61 530xi and the M5. Now its TRD Pro 4runner and M5. The M5 has had ionic modules go bad, throttle actuators go bad, alternator go bad, clutch went on it, SMG had to be replaced. All that time I had a daily that I also loved to drive and could rely on while my M5 was being repaired.

Does the car vibrate when it idles rough? in my case, I can feel and see the doors vibrate when you open them while the engine runs idle in neutral. I am still investigating what causes this vibration. Filters, oils, fluids, rubbers (from the airbox which you mentioned), MAFs, coilpacks, sparks, etc replaced. Also changed the flywheel. I still get the vibration though

Smoke test! after 14 years, bound to be air leaks. save money get a $75 paint can one on eBay. taking parts on and off can fix it or create gaps, so replacing other parts trick you into thinking it was a coil when it was a leak.

These BMW wiring plugs are really finnicky, we were having VANOS codes on the passenger side for the exhaust on an N62 V8 and we literally swapped all of the VANOS solenoids around with a spare parts 7 series vehicle and there looked like there was nothing wrong with the solenoids themselves either, so yeah MAKE SURE YOU FULLY INSERT ALL OF THE PLUGS

The common flaws? If so still rod bearings , clutch can be expensive , the getrag manual trans can have bearing issues , and all the usual e39 problems window regulators abs pump etc

Rod bearings EVERY 60k? Sheesh! I thought it was just a one-time thing to upgrade the factory bearings. I know that it'd be a long time to drive this another 60k but what a shame you have to do it. It's like a race car without any trophies.

There is so much bullshit on social media from people who don’t actually own one. And sadly a lot more from others who were not willing to pay for thorough maintenance.

M5 E60 is only a BMW Fanatic Fan car who has a laptop with INPA/NCSexpert/DIS/Rheingold, etc. Then he must know how this engine works and the components inside it as well as the gearbox components. And of course a good salary/other income to afford maintenance. This is not the usual driver's car where you just pop in, push the start button and floor it. If you want that, go buy a ferrari for 10 times the price and the same performance, maybe slightly better.
