ATF the injectors
You keep buying all the cars I want to buy damnit Richard
Glad to see you working with futo, I think everyone there genuinely believes in open repair.
Rossman might be "the angry guy in a recliner" but you can't beat his record on open repair info and sympathize with him over parts access no matter what you fix.
You need two BMWs. One to $hi# on , and the other to cover it up .
you should manual swap it
Honestly, if you buy an E60 M5 for 5k you should be happy that the engine still has all 10 pistons left
This could be a diamond in the rough....nah, who am I kidding. He'll be 12k in before he gets it running then rich will give it to some random chick he thinks likes him
😂😂😂
Thanks,
I love that it wasn't garaged. watching someone else spend the money and time is entertaining af.
@@soundman6241 At the very least he should replace ALL the seats. front and back. That mold is not coming out of them any time soon no matter how hard he scrubs.
you need M539 restorations collab here. That man is the expert on bmws.
Absolutely! His channel is awesome
Agree, he is awesome, it would be comedy gold getting sreten working with Rich
Definitely hit him up for some advice! Sreten is an absolute guru on these.
Agree, plus he's a bit fond of mouldy E60 M5
I would love to see that but don't you think that Sreten has to many projects and not enough time
Rich, long time E60 M5 owner here:
If you decide to keep the car for a while:
- change the injectors
- the buzzing sound you here is the SMG hydraulic pump priming. Don't worry
- on the front of the engine there are two ionic current modules. These can cause misfires and no-start issues.
- check the fuel pump, fuel breather valves (under the intake plenum) and the charcoal cannister. Check all fuses.
Good luck!
🏆
I feel like Rich needs to get the dream team together on this one: M539 Restorations for the mechanical, Ammo NYC for the detailing and mold, LSC for the electrical, and Hoovie to buy it afterwards XD
Sounds like an ebay motors project! Great idea btw.
Hoovie couldnt buy it afterwards as it would be too well sorted for him. Maybe if it ever needs rod bearings is the time for hoovie to buy it.
😂
Rich, if there was a "thoroughly enjoyed" button I would click it for this video. I thoroughly enjoyed this one. Also, thanks for the help in my last video. The new car didn't kill me after your advice on how to fix it. Thanks!
New car 👀👀👀
LSC IN THE HOUSE!!!
I second that
@m539restorations would be of great help here
hes a master old bmw enthusiast ahahah
@LegitStreetCars can you clean uncle rich's injectors with your crazy injector cleaning contraption?
Ah yes, finally someone brave enough to take on the m5 we all want, but too scared to touch
There is a channel called M539 Restorations he does all sorts of BMW content. He picked up an M5 for 6k and brought her back to factory new its honestly incredible. In his playlist he named the build "Project Raleigh" it's an eight part series and a really good watch if you ever have some time to kill!!

@@edwinheredia3735 Man I am full of typos today thank you so much!!!!

Im so happy you got this. This is my favorite BMW ever made
Hello, I am Fernando from Portugal. I always like this kind of videos where cars are putting back to life. I have one m5 v10 too myself with that same colour. I also have the issues that car carries but I was able to solve them. But at the end when you have the privilege to drive a car like that the smile will came from your face…for me the spin of that v10 is unique. Thank you for your video and good luck with the repair of the car. 👍👍👍👍👍
Rich: If you replace the battery with a new one, you'll also need to reset the computer as the alternator varies the charge based on battery age. If you install a new battery without resetting the computer, it will continue to think that you have an old battery and will continue to send a higher and excessive charge to compensate for age, prematurely destroying the battery. This is a well known BMW issue in newer models. As for the moisture issue, I know of a great way to get rid of that, it includes a giant box and a crapton of rice...
issue ? lol 😅 its not issue, you only not understand that system...also you need to register proper battery type / amps...
God I hate new cars
I must be a man of little patience, because at this point I'd be buying a bicycle.
plus you could have lunch
@@FalculoCornuto Of course, that's part of resetting the system and computer. Going in and resetting the battery data is what informs the computer of manufacture, months expectancy, CCAs, and other battery data. It's a BMW, that's par for over-engineered German cars.
M539 Colab! He's a CZcams BMW Legend!
You'll have it up and running in 1 episode with his help.
Good luck Rich, love the way you push the limits of humour without triggering CZcams or people! 😁😁
Sreten doesn't have time for a redneck M5 like this one.
@@millll111lllI 😂😂😂
Use to pour hot water mixed with bleach down the rain gutters in our X3 every 3 months due to the same water issue. Also, did a head gasket on it..if the injectors are not put back in the same spot..they will not work.
I was about to suggest the same. M539 Restorations is awesome and his V10 vids will tell you everything you need to know.
I love M539, but Nathan’s BMW Workshop has resurrected a few V10 M5s now, and actually considers them reliable when properly maintained
I've been watching you pretty much from when you conceived the idea of working on your own Tesla. You have come a long way and full credibility to you and all of your team . You make fantastic content. I dream of doing stuff like you . I used to have a workshop at home and miss it heaps . Keep up the great work .
Pleasantly surprised at how much I learned from this video. Your difficulties and problem solving definitely give me more confidence to rip things apart.
Rich, use a spray bottle filled with a sodium carbonate solution on the mold. It's $30/gal at the hardware store but you can mix your own by purchasing a box of A&H Washing Soda at the grocery store. About 1/4 cup per gal with 1 or 2 drops of dish washing soap. Spray it on and it will kill and help immobilize the fungi. After it dries, it leaves a fine white layer which prevents spores from taking hold on the surface. A damp rag will remove the residue. I'd spray every surface at least twice and then put a room dehumidifier and an ozone generator in the car and let it run for days.
👍🏼
I'm personally a huge fan of Moldex it works wonders. Good tip though.
This is good to know, I'm often horrified by moldy interiors and always wondered if there are ways to get rid of it, short of just stripping and burning all the moldy bits.
Clear distilled vinegar.
@@Thinginator I learned this after our flood in 2013. You really need to get as much moisture out of the air as possible, along with coating every moldy surface with the carbonate. Carpet and insulation is near impossible to de-mold, so remove it and expose the bare surfaces underneath and then treat.
I recently had one of these that was 100% sorted with new clutch, new vanos lines, new rod bearings and studs. It was one of the best cars I ever had on the channel. Epic car Rich.
go get it back then
This episode was very interesting I am following to see more of this! well done Rich and company
I allways enjoyed rich, Humble guy that isn't scared to go that extra mile. I like the wide variety on this channel. It's very interesting and enjoyable content.
You should..you should probably get a respirator. Mold is no joke.
Not that big of a deal. Open air. Use gloves, wash your hands and don't stick your face in it or try to eat it. More than likely it's just mildew! They will be fine
@@theglitch99 You clearly know little about mold.
Throw a chlorine tablet in a water cup, leave it in the car for a few days sealed up outside. I'm not sure it helps with mold spores, but it should kill most anything biological, Including the smell, and make it safer to work on.
The sound your hearing is the hydrolic pump for the transmission priming. It’s nothing to worry about.
Yup, that's what he says at 14:14. ;)
I had the same issue with my e60 530d that wouldn't start after flattening the battery. Turns out the immobiliser can forget the key code if the battery is drained on these with no obvious signs other then turning over but not starting. Before spending countless hours replacing stuff i highly recommend looking into re syncing your key first(can simply be done with a usb obd cable and software called INPA ). Love the new addition to the channel by the way and can not wait to hear that thing sing once you get it going .
The car would throw a key fob light on the dash. ^
A Collab with the BMW mastermind Sreten from M539 Restorations on this would be so entertaining!!! Have seen him perform miracles on countless BMW's including a E60 M5 that he picked up for six grand. I mean he does live in Germany after all 😂😂😂
Serbian not German.
@@chrisp.2544 Excuse my ignorance I had no idea I just knew he lived in Germany never really looked into Sreten's background I am sure he has mentioned in one of his videos before I just missed it. Which is crazy because I have watched every one of his uploads twice by now 🤣🤣 I appreciate the correction Chris! Going to edit the comment to say *Lives in Germany*
@@StillShatter All good. And you are 100% right, Sreten is THE MAN when it comes to these M5s.
@@chrisp.2544 Considering he was never a mechanic just a guy who loves BMW's the quality of the work he performs is mind blowing!! That same quality shows in his videos as well, since I found his channel haven't missed a single upload!!!
It would be comedy Gold
As an E60 M5 owner who restored a $20K, low-mileage car with $10,000 worth of parts and labor, I'm here for this. They're great cars that unfortunately fall into bad hands all too often.
very well put....
I just had the same crank/no start issue with my M5 and the fix was the cas and dme units had to be resynchronized with a decent scanner. The sound, torque, and handling make this thing well worth the headache.
I love how you guys do not shy away from any car project 💯
You can’t trust any codes until you get a fresh battery in there.
Anyone else notice he didn't tighten down the battery terminals? I wouldn't trust a weak crank either.
Rich, please check the wiring harness on each side of the interior. What can happen is if they get wet there are weird connections that corrode and cause shorts. If you resolved those connections after drying everything out , you will avoided electrical issues. Porsche is known for the same issue, especially Cayyanes.
That’s what I’m thinking. Various codes for several systems and standing is probably ecm/bcm/harness related
Don't forgot every Infiniti! Ask me how I know :(
Cayenne owner here. Yes. He's already got the seats and carpet up. I didn't remove my carpet entirely but I think it was about 7 electrical junctions on each side.
I inherited a 316i from 2000 from my father. Fabulous car to drive for the cost. Even managed 205 km/h on the Autobahn in Germany. When the brakes were so gone it sounded like a Soviet train braking I had to sell it cause the new brakes cost more than the car was worth. An emotional day for me, because of the connection with my father.
This has very quickly become my favorite series you are doing and its the first video.
This will make a great series! Here for E60 rebuild content 🤘
I had one of those E60s a couple of years back. The rear door vapour barriers were pretty notorious for failing and ... letting in rainwater which would pool in the rear passenger footwell. I had the barriers replaced by a backyard garage and they made things worse. Then I had a professional workshop do it and that sorted the issue right out.
Had a e60 for 9 years and had the exact same issue with the water and mold under the seats. It was bad sunroof seal and clogged sunroof drains for me. I was sick everytime I drove the car for a while before I found it.
Sunroof drain channels blocked is the most likely cause for that much water and especially seeing as it was focused in the trunk and behind the rear arches.
yep, pull the door cards and check the barrier is sealed properly. i bet the drains are blocked on the doors too. May as well replace the door handles while you are there if they have the black soft touch rubber. That's likely failed too. looking forward to seeing this come to life.
Yeah those are NOTORIOUS for leaking in just about all BMWs I've dealt with (was a stealership tech for 8yrs). Have to make sure you don't rip them and then when going back together, replace any bad/missing butyl tape and make sure they're sealed properly. Also, sunroof drains clog up quite often (like this one), and it runs down the inside of the pillars and onto the floor.
Love these troubleshooting videos. ❤❤
Great episode today Rich. Liked how you were going through the BMW one thing at a time and moving on.
These videos are still lacking a Stevon. Hope the storm passes soon
❤
Not.
Incase you missed it in the video posted two weeks ago "we built an electric amphibious car and we almost drowned twice" Rich gives an update on Stevon @ 2:19
I'd bet Stevon is sueing cause they were all at the hospital together. He had a neck brace on but he did hit another car...throttle stuck on the race car...I bet he layered up n rich removed everything from channel till case is over...just my opinion from videos I seen of the crash...
I enjoy the duo, too, but there was a Rich before Stevon which also was entertaining, like it is now... :D
Great stuff! More problem solving and discovery. RIP Stevon. Get M539 Restorations on the blower.
What's with stevon
Why RIP. He isn't dead ffs. Just recovering
@@3K4peikos He's obviously dead to Rich.
I figured he re-evaluated his life choices after the wreck and that was the reason for the halving.
@ he mentioned him in the last video
I've owned a E60 M5 for about 7 years now, injectors are on world wide back order. They are a Bosch item so you might be able to find some Bosch ones in stock somewhere.
Apart from Rod Bearings, the throttle actuators need to be rebuilt, but you can wait until they die before doing anything. Vanos is generally OK, don't really need to do anything unless you have an issue. And you already know about the SMG pump, again, doesn't need attention unless you have issues.
That noise you hear when you connect the battery is the fuel pump priming, btw.
Finally more documentation on this legendary car 🔥🔥
Love the new-old content. This is how I found this channel. Rich, a car, a camera and some detailed tips most folks would find boring and mundane.
The risks that Rich takes to make content is incredible. Thanks uncle Rich.
What risks?
looks like a lot of fun
Rich! go in engine bay, underneath the ac vents (remove them) there is a black box at passenger side open it and ‘ll find the main engine wiring harness, modules, connectors and various fuses. I had a similar problem involving the water drains and the black box was filled 1/3 water, various modules where fried i had to replace them, the e-box fan was the most difficult to access at the bottom.
@M539Restorations did a restoration for this car lately, take a look.
And you should run ozone generator for this interior for starter.
But great video, waiting for next episode 👍👍
you may need some M539 Restorations assistance, he's your man for this
Been there, done that on this beast. New injectors, new plugs/coils. Then brace yourself for SMG issues & rod bearings. Would also recommend Nathan's BMW Workshop for E60 M5 expertise. He bought mine and restored it.

In the future, Rich, IF you (or any viewers) even suspect mould growth inside a car, PLEASE wear a mask!!
Because some of these airborne spores can produce really dangerous fungal infections that can be VERY hard to treat successfully!!!

Yes. This was a great episode. Back to the roots of the channel. Keep it coming. It will be highly entertaining to see this car ripping away and sounding gloriously after you get it running.
While you've got the back taken apart, you should inspect the wire bundle that runs into the trunk lid, mine started breaking where it enters the tube, which caused intermittent problems with the license plate lamps and "trunk open" warnings which could probably result in the alarm going off too. I spliced in some fresh wires and it's all good. They still sell a replacement harness.
I have a 2016 x5 and the sunroof front drains clogged and flood front passenger seat. Used weed eat line to push through the clog and blew it out with air. Passenger airbag also came on because of moisture in the passenger seat. Took a water vacuum to suck out what I could then ran a heater on and off for two days. Finally got it dry enough to put it back together and then used seat warmer to evaporate the rest. It’s a painful process. Good luck.
I wonder what Sreten from M539 Restoration's thoughts would be ? "A Turd of the funkiest order?"
So glad you bought an E60 M5. This is the kind of content that keeps me coming back!
Rich, you are taking your life in your own hands. You should be using full PPI to clean out that interior.
For the rest of us watching - very informative and instructive.
I would suggest checking the sunroof drains, almost guaranteed that they are blocked and that is the cause of the water intrusion.
Rich you are fantastic my favorite creator and the reason is your attitude, sarcasm, sense of humor, prospective on just everything. You are fantastic and thank you for always pointing out that Samcrack never complete a project.
Finally back in your usual form. Much better than the filler nonsense of the last few months. Thanks uncle Rich.
Yes about damn time you made a m5 V10 video.. I been eyeing these for awhile.
Loved this video and looking forward to this project A LOT. A destroyed interior AND a non working engine, maybe some electrical issues? Sounds perfect
It’s amazing that people let such beautiful cars rot away like that. Glad you are giving it some love rich, peace my brother
For the most part it's an easy fix but it takes time to search and find the source of the problem. Great job for doing this to a nice M5
Mr Rich!!!! I had a similar issue caused by blocked sunroof drains in my e60. My car wouldnt start either!!! It would just crank and crank and crank! The forward sunroof drains caused an issue where even the DME in the area under the cowl became water damaged. I needed to get a used DME and get it coded to the car. Anyone reading can you please thumbs up so Rich can see this, thanks!
Great stuff - really looking forward to this
We need an M539 collab.
Love the E60 M5, looking forward to more videos on it!
This reminds me of my S60R, it's gotten a lil damp over winter and there's some mold in the spare wheel well, it's nowhere near as bad as this
I cleaned it already quite a bit but I still gotta pull all the carpeting out in the near just to make sure that it's all clean
i daily an e60 550 so this is fun to watch. those sunroof drains are notorious for clogging and causing leaking in the car. i had the passenger airbag fault on my car when i first got it, cleared the code and it never came back. if it keeps coming back, i think its the sensor in the seat? best of luck Rich!
Yay, thanks for the new video Uncle Rich
Check the drains right under the front cabin filters. They block and water fills up there like a tank and overflows into the front foot wells. The worst of it is the active steering ECU is located in the foot well and almost certainly it fries. I had to go through 2 before I extended the harness and relocated it under the dash.
I've got a 2006 with 186.5k on it. That periodic whine when you first turn the car on is the gearbox hydraulic pump motor. It spins up to prime a pressurized reservoir which runs the clutch and shift actuators. It will occasionally kick on while the ignition is on (even if the engine is off). It sounds healthy.
The good news is that it's all self-contained on the outside of the gearbox. Even the cooling, which makes the gearbox fairly easy to remove. All you have to do is unplug the harness.
M539 is the guy you need to call for this one
Rich
Put the key in the trunk key slot, turn it both left and right... Can't remember, but one way locks the trunk, and the other way will mechanically open the trunk. No power required
or just use a car charger on the jumper terminals in the engine bay and then press the button to open the trunk
M5s dont have a key hole on the trunk.
@@king_tut. my M5 begs to differ.
@@zachlitberg depending on how deeply discharged the battery is, that could easily not work. Low voltage can put one or more modules in odd failure states, which can draw a decent amount of current, possibly more than a charger or jump start could safely supply. In those situations, it's best to disconnect the battery from the car and charge it on its own, then reinstall the fully charged battery
@@hotgarbagellc could be a pre-lci thing because my 08 doesn't have one..
I jump-started a 5 series the other week. [ not a German car guy at all ]
There's a 12V stud high on the L/H side of the engine bay for jump starts, attach your jump-pack there in future ;-)
Ha! 27:50 reminds me of my old E61 (wagon variant) 525i beamer. I had to swap all six injectors TWICE, because they kept breaking / clogging. After that it ran smooth for years. According to some forums the injectors are a known issue for the E60/E61 models. Oh, and I also bought mine used back in the day. Fun times.
V10 sounds are the best sounds.
The car we all make 4 videos on eventually 😛
Great video Rich. You entered for the engine and ended up with moldy interior!!
Had this with my e46. Water poured in through the boot, filled up the battery tray and soaked the boot, had mould behind the back seats. It seems to be a theme with BMWs and they dont even need to be old ones either.
I love these mechanical problem solving videos.
Finally a CZcamsr that is aware of whee/tire dollies.
I thought the same
For stubborn sunroof drains, you can also feed some thick weed whacker line in there to "snake it out". I would really love to see you get this vehicle running. Don't give up, I know you can do it. I know it is premature, but I wonder if all that water somehow affected the engine control module... Voltage at injectors is/should be? Good luck!🤞
Well Rich, I have you beat I picked up a 2008 M5 fully running and driving on fleabay same color much better condition. I got it for 4500 in 2019. It needs new seats because the leather was trashed and needs a new paint job. Mechanically it was fine, I did rod bearings my self and actually they were pretty good at 120k. I have a few of these M5s so LMK if you have questions.
18:50
Not entirely sure why, but I absolutely lost it laughing at Rich’s tone when his thumb became distressingly not dry, instantaneously.
Probably because I’ve experienced this scenario so many times that I feel his pain.
Sometimes it’s either laugh or cry.
Try using a multimeter check the ohms to determine what injectors are ok
We had water issues in ours and the sunroof seal was bad and the car was only a few years old back then also blew the lines then never had an issue again. It was funny to know the issue before you found it, very common on them cars. Also I have an 95 s600 VIP if you want the f1 sound. It’s for sell.
You are onto something with this series Uncle Rich. I actually stayed till the end of the video. I haven't been this engaged since the first Tesla Model S project.
Rich you caught me off guard with a new upload 👍👍👍
Make sure you lubricate the throttle actuator and the rods for the throttle
Good luck!! While you are replacing the fuel injectors please don’t forget the coil packs.. im sure u will have to do the fuel pump soon anyways.. and also the little humming noise when u open the door .. its the smg pump priming .. so that is always a good sign! Plan to swap all the fluids out and check for the metallic pieces in the filter .. if u see gold.. u hit the gold rush jack pot and run 😂.. cant wait to see what else u find!
As an owner of a NA V8 BMW engine, im very happy you bought this and working on it. Also very sorry you bought this and have to work on it.
Honestly, I'd do an episode where you go through all the grounds (burnishing, etc.) Zone by Zone (trunk i.e. battery)(cabin: SMS, engine interlocks, door ajar, fuel pump), and (under hood i.e. engine ground, alternator, fuse blocks, relays) considering they're all rusted out. Since you're a HUGE EV guy call it 'GROUNDED. Definately pull the fuel lines from the rails and run an external tank up front for all the gasoline to pump (water, etc.) out of the back. Test all your coil packs. Drain your oil and flush the whole system including the radiator. Plan on spending $400.00. A new battery is close to that anyhow. Feel guaranteed that all the relays that send lights to your computer are jacked up and hot swap every one. Chase that GREMLIN! Cheehoo! Don't feel afraid to use a red paint pen to mark each of the grounds that you tackle or dot the relays of known issues.
Slap a dehumidifier set to 40% in there for a few days to get draw moisture out of places that you can't really get to.
Awesome video.
That bmw chime brings back nightmares from my childhood
The injector spray patterns look like absolute garbage by the way so I would definitely clean those. It looked to me like it tried to spray for 1-2 rotations and then the ECU actually cut off the injectors, so my suspicion is the computer is not seeing crank or cam signals or another sensor is telling the ECU to shut off fuel and ignition.
I agree, they just look gummed up.
Yeah, it did look like they were just spraying badly and then just fuel cut.
