Nice show! I love my CBD. I've recently added Symbolic Tarot of Wirth and Dame Fortune's Wheel Tarot by Paul Huson to my collection. Both are TdM inspired. Though the historical Wirth deck originally contained only the majors, I got the version by Lo Scarabeo with added minor suits. I find the artwork pleasing to look at and meditate on. Huson's tarot is very much a hybrid containing many majors that would fit in with the Marseilles tradition, but with Etteilla-inspired, fully illustrated minors. I loved seeing the decks in your collection. I could see myself getting a few of them eventually.

Great presentation! I wanted one Marseille-type deck for my collection and I got the Robledo Marsella. Same as you, I didn't stop at one. LOL Patrick Valenza has gotten lots of people, who might not otherwise be, interested in Marseille with his Trionfi series. You're right, I hope this trend continues! :-)

My first TdM was the Le Veritable by Hadar. The card stock is a let down for what it cost. My favorite is the jodorowsky because of the vibrant ultra marine almost purple design on the backs, second is a vintage Fournier Spanish tarot. I have really enjoyed listening how you explained each deck according to the history. My next deck I would like vandenborre version. I love the checkered borders….

I agree about the return to historic tarots. I so welcome they are my favorites. I wonder if we are picking up on our past lives when we so love these historic tarots. I love to look through them and it sort of relaxes me to view them.

I recently bought Jodorowsky's deck which is now reprinted in France. I love the color palette, those dark blues and dark yellows (orange). And judicious implementing of the color purple. I love Ben Dov's deck for the more purple colored blues and simplicity. Lo Scarabeo's T de M is lovely and pleasing as well. Those three are my current favorite mass market T de Ms.

Hi, love the video and your channel, just wanted to add some personal thoughts regarding Jodorowsky and Ben Dov decks. I felt that Ben Dov’s book is good but is just a simplified easy to follow distillation of Jodorowsky’s teachings and removed most of the sexuality that Jodorowsky includes. Also I will never understand why someone would claim to restore the Conver to its original but in the end still alter the facial expressions to smiles thus changing the feel of the entire deck from what made the Conver deck special in the first place. Pablo robledo had stated that Conver faces are the best and most important feature, I think he gets it right, his is my favourite deck. Pablo also follows Jodorowsky but has since evolved with his own personal style whilst preserving the historical flavours of marseilles.
Thanks John.. I guess I should finally read Jodorowsky’s book.. I do know Yoav was a student of his.. I don’t really read in that style so much. It comes out a bit when I’m reading Marseille but I rely on numerology a lot and archetypes. I know that’s controversial among some TDM peeps 😂 Also I also don’t consider his deck a Conver anymore myself. I used to. Hand drawing a wood block deck changes the feel for me. Even if it’s copied exactly by hand. I more or less have a sentimental connection with Ben Dov. It was my first. That’s why I made sure I said “some people consider it a Conver” 😂 I was trying to be polite. I do find Ben Dovs decks charming. I feel the smiles add a nice touch while keeping most of the canon in tact. But it is its own thing.
Personally my favorite facial expressions are Pierre Madenie. Nicolas Conver is up there too. Do you have the Poncet Conver? What are your thoughts on that deck. I enjoyed looking at your classic Marseille decks very much. The Fournier vintage colored TdM deck is actually the deck I learned with in the eighties and I am still very attached to it, I love the colours (and the Bateleur's moustache 😊 !) and still use it. So thanks for showing it, you don't see it often!
My favorite of all times is the Madenié because of the expressions on the faces, they are so exactely spot on! The Angel Tarot is a great modern TdM. The New Choice is a very clever recentely created TdM as well. I like the fact that it manages to completely respect the classical TdM while adding some subtle changes, the Hermit being an Indian sadhu for instance.
The Jodorowsy is the one I use most with clients, because I like to explain the meanings of the cards to them with the image of the card. I think it’s the deck that makes this the easiest. (and Jodo’s « le tarot des chats » is Marseille based and works wonders with children!) His book « la voie du tarot » is the absolute best book about TdM nowadays, I think, hugely popular in Europe among us Marseille users. Thanks for this video, I always learn a lot from your deep knowlege of Marseille decks 🙏🙏🙏.

Great video, thank you Justin! Just confirming it was Kaplan that mistakenly said the Tarot Classic was based on Claude Burdel. This is printed in the LWB with the deck and also the larger stand-alone book Tarot Classic.

Love the Tarot Classic - my brother bought me my copy when I was about 14. He got it from a car-boot sale, it still has a little white sticker on it with the car-boot sale price - 20p [pence] ! :D If memory serves me right it is based on the Gassmann c.1840, Switzerland. Muller took it over and started publishing it c1870s. The Tarot Classic is a direct copy of the Schaffhausen. The Swiss IJJ was created by the Swiss cardmaker J. G. Rauch c1830s, whose company Muller took over in 1838. My copy of the Tarot Classic is the 1974 deck, it says on the back of the box "based upon original woodcuts by Claude Burdel." I believe Kaplan repeats this error in one of his Encyclopedia volumes.

Thanks for this. I am really interested in that Ignaz Krebs Tarot printed by Piatnik. The majors remind me of Dodal, while the minors look like Madenie. I have only 3 of those, Jodo, CBD and my favorite Grimaud. Mass production decks are great, they’re usually affordable to replace and easy to find.

Great video Justin. Love all the history. I still just have Peterson’s Noblet and a Sopafino (I know…it’s Italian, but so beautiful). I still have yet to find a Dodal that all the Marseilles tubers have reached a consensus on…and I really prefer a small deck…so if I I like a deck but it’s too large, I simply won’t reach for it. I’ve been thinking of Conrad’s deck. I stick to numerology and elemental (suit) associations (that’s what a deck of cards is right?), but I would like to get Ben Dov’s book one day in order to gain a more Marseilles specific point of view. Anyway…I’m all over the place. Love your interviews and tarot history videos. I’m still holding out for a Justin Michael deck. Stay well. ☘️

Watched it twice, back to back! Thank you. Only have the New Choice and CBD in TdM. Amazon save and compare is now loaded up w/ the Universal (Lo Scarabeo), Fournier-Jeux, Fournier, Hardar, and Vieux Monde Express 1930.
For fun, I added the Marseille Cat Tarot. Have wanted a cat tarot for years but have not found one I like enough to buy. Maybe this one 🤷♂️.
Decks live in Save and Compare or my Evernote wishlist until I cannot not buy them or I lose interest and delete.

Just picked up the new 3rd edition of the Hadar TdM (Le Veritable Tarot de Marseille). Love, love this deck - the colours are incredible and all the facial depictions are so expressive. It's replaced all the other TdMs as far as I'm concerned.
How is the cardstock? I’d it the same as the one I showed in my video? Not sure if I showed both of my Hadar decks in this video. Hadar TDM Is superb!!
@@justinmichaeltarot 3rd edition has the same laminated cardstock as the 2nd edition which I don't mind. However, both the 2nd and 3rd edition have richer colours than the 1996 original. The 3rd edition is very affordable.
I own quite a few restoration decks from Reynaud and Flornoy; the Jodorwsky TdM, The CBD TdM and several others. For actual readings in the Open Reading style championed by Ben Dov and Camelia Elias, I prefer the Hadar.

Great video! I have some of the decks I with I could have a Piatnik😔. I didn't understand or maybe you didn't say it, what is the inspiration for the Tarot Classic? I think the booklet says sonething about Burdel but taking with Pablo Robledo he explains to mw that it isnt a Burdel
One of the biggest differences with these cards is the ace of cups. I really like the round shaped cup for the ace card. What are your thoughts on the different styles of that card?
It is Alejandro Jodorowsky (Not Joe Dorowski as the key moment time clips are labeled)... it is worth reading the beginning of his book on tarot and his description of how he created it. Ben-Dov was a student of Jodorowsky at one point.
I don't know much about TdM (I've always read with RWS). Have you ever heard of a TdM deck called Gassman TdM??
Kaplan did 4 Encyclopedias on the Tarot, you know? Also do you notice where there are major changes in symbolism like the 3 streams becoming 2, or making the couple in the Sun card male & female, (their most likely Emathion & Memnon). Have you also noticed that the Marseilles Fool is an example of self-reference in that a card has a face & a backside? The Pope usually has one person with his arm pointing down on the left (why the hat, there's a reason), then the Pope giving the sign of blessing & the person on the right with arm pointing upwards, there's a similar symbolism in Mithraism
I couldn't find any reference to Marteau's book in English. Maybe not on the market yet?

That’s true. Though there probably weren’t many people in Switzerland still worshipping Roman and Greek Gods in 18th century. I did mean to say Catholic.

@@mattlestat2703 I think I read that it was originally made in predominantly Catholic regions in Switzerland but were well received by Protestants. But according to Dummett (if I’m remembering correctly) it was produced initially in Catholic areas. In France the Catholics still preferred original characters for the most part
