Obi Wan had to have realized Vader was still alive sometime, otherwise he would have called him Anakin(he did call him that during his whole time on Mustafar, but went to calling him Vader in this one). The Expanded Universe already provided a brilliant resolution to why a short distance on the Kessel Run is something to brag about: in between the two planets, there is a massive black hole cluster, and it's tricky to pilot near one of those. So, making the trip in a shorter distance means flying close to the black holes, thus confirming both your skill and your ship's quality.

I always took it as hyperspace is the compression of normal space. So if the Kessel Run was 100 light years and the hyperdrive compressing it down to 12 parsecs, that is pretty impressive.
But hey, if that is the official reasoning, it works.

actually flying closer to a blackhole would be not only insanely dangerous, buuuuut, it would make the trip faster, the blackholes would create super powerful inescapable zones of destruction, and he basically flew in between the blackholes, that is insane, and more to the point he was sling shotting around them as if they were planets to sling shot around, not only insane, but likely he was running for his life from something.
and yes in theory, black holes are compressions of space, but we really dont know for sure, do we, but the theory goes two ways, its compressing space, and its also possibly the bridge effect where black holes as they become dense enough to form may or may not reach out of our universe to another layer of space, perhaps even reaching towards whereever gravity is coming from, its possible black holes are energy bridges that pull energy and bring it through a tunnel into a even larger blackhole or another universe or layer of space where it is consumed by some nightmarish thing we do not have a word for, or is possibly left floating outside of a white hole which mysterious to its viewers, if thier can be anything living in such a universe with randomly appearing energy and unknown physical laws, the white hole just appears with energy flaring out of it then presumably dissapears again or returns to its normal light which might be what a blackhole would look like if it wasnt sucking all matter through, maybe its like a glowing vortex of plasma that moves so fast it disrupts realizty itself and creates time dilation and spacial compression.
but really its all crazy theories
so yes... the kessel run being faster and in less space and time is related to black holes.

No, the new version was Lucas's way of attempting to "fix" something that didn't need fixing. I'm guessing they didn't have enough crew or couldn't hire enough extras when they shot it originally. In fact, it's still technically a "dead end". It's essentially a stormtrooper locker room. Why would that many stormtroopers be all in one place though? Yeah, that's why it doesn't make sense. And they didn't keep continuity, so you don't see that many again.

One of the main things that keeps Luke on the good side is his admiration for his father. When he learns his father was a Jedi Knight, this admiration is amplified. Obi-wan knows this and doesn't want to destroy that. Luke is broken upon learning his father is actually evil, and even still, he counts on the admiration of his Jedi father as the catalyst that brings Anakin back.
When Anakin says "you already have, Luke" at the end, there is heavy substance to it. Luke could have just as easily and understandably let go of the feelings he had for his hero dad.
I also choose to believe that Vader blocking Luke's strike on the Emperor wasn't to protect the Emperor, it was to protect Luke and keep him good in a moment of Anakin returning (hence the title of ep6) and reaching out.

However the empire needed to verify that the rebels don't have the death star plans. Only way to do that is to search the entire ship and all of the escape pods which you obviously wouldn't be able to if you destroy one of them. Therefore the empire would only take the risk of destroying the escape pods if there was a life sign and therefore suspected the rebels were trying to smuggle the plans.

To me the best version of the 'explaining hyperspace travel to 'fix' the parsecs thing' came from the X-Wing novels where they go into a lot of detail about that sort of thing. They explain that hyperspace travel is always a straight line point A to B. You want to chart those lines close to star systems and such so you've got a place to go in an emergency but anything that makes a gravity well is gonna fuck with your navigation (Han mentions this in ANH with his 'fly right through a star or bounce too close to a supernova' line). Larger, faster ships have the mass and/or momentum to resist these tugs of gravity so they can fly shorter courses.
In the old EU novels the 'Kessel Run' was a smuggler's route to avoid patrols that went around a cluster of black holes called The Maw. They were well charted but highly dangerous and most smugglers had ships just one side of the scrap yard so they had to be a little careful. The Falcon had its super juiced hyperdrive, a daredevil pilot, and (as we learn in Solo) a truly unique navigation computer so they shaved distance off the run, could complete it faster, and made more money and bragging rights.
All that being said I also like CinemaWins's take on it that Han was testing the waters to run a game on Ben and Luke. Han's a scoundrel. He's always gonna be looking for the angle.

Okay, I'm going to put forward a solution to the "ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs" problem that I'm surprised absolutely no one has put forth by now, because it's simple, and it solves the problem without creating any new ones.
Han Solo is not talking about his ship's speed, or how advanced its navigational capabilities are: He's telling Obi-Wan what his ship's great claim to fame is, because it's what the rest of the ship's reputation hangs on. Even if Obi-Wan doesn't know the name of the ship (and he doesn't), he might have heard this very famous piece of space-faring lore about the ship that set the new record for making one of the most infamously dangerous trips in the galaxy.
For instance, if we were talking about someone who accomplished a major feat here on Earth, it might go something like this:
"I hear you're looking for a swimming coach."
"Yeah, but they can't just know how to swim. They have to really know how to win races."
"That's easy. I know Bob Bowman."
    "Is he any good?"
"You've never heard of Bob Bowman?"
    "Should I have?"
"He's the man who trained Michael Phelps; you know, the most decorated Olympian of all time."
"No $#!+... wow, then I guess he really does know how to train swimmers to win races."
    Back to the cantina!
"You've never heard of the Millennium Falcon?"
    "No. Should I have?"
"It's the ship that made the Kessel Run in less than twelve parsecs."
Intended reaction? "No $#!+... wow; the Millenium Falcon is *that* ship? That ship's supposed to be explosive diarrhea fast! Okay; you're hired."
And that interpretation even fits Ben Kenobi's reaction perfectly, because doesn't he look like his first thought is "yeah, right... like you own *that* ship"?
It's simple. It works. It doesn't create any new problems. Han Solo's just talking about what his ship is famous for. So naturally, everyone's glossed over that solution in order to tie themselves into knots trying to figure out a way to make irredeemably bad physics work.

Small correction, Obi-wan is in his late 50s at the time of A New Hope. Then again, I guess your best friend betraying you and living in the desert for about 20 years would take a toll on you. Plus Alec Guinness was only 63 at the time it was released so the age gap isn't that unbelievable.

Watching one of many amazing documentaries on Star Wars creation, I learnt that in making of a new hope Lukas has already started working the script of the next two films. Leading me to believe that he had most definitely planned out the plot twist where darth Vader reveals his true identity. So obi-wans line “he was killed by darth Vader” was not only accurate but planned.

    • @sandal_thong8631
      @sandal_thong8631 Před 8 měsíci

You can't take Lucas's word on anything, because it's him just being self-aggrandizing after the fact. He got the first draft of the script of Empire from Leigh Brackett in first quarter 1978, who then died of cancer. He then came up with the idea to make Darth Vader Luke's father instead of his father's killer. A couple months later, David Prowse in an interview suggests that they are father and son, so the story won't be resolved in the next episode as father can't kill son and son can't kill father. I suspect Lucas read that article in a San Francisco paper and got pissed at Prowse, who supposedly was never told until he saw the movie.
He also supposedly had Indiana Jones planned out for three films, but Spielberg was quite ready to say that wasn't the case after he found he didn't have a second story ready. That was one reason why they brought back all the unused stunts from _Raiders_ (e.g. jumping out an airplane and mine-cart chase) to use in _Temple of Doom._

My first time watching this movie will always stick out in my mind: I was six years old, all of my cousins gathered at my aunt and uncle's lake house in Indiana. We were all exhausted from being out on the water and I was sitting on my cousin Lindsay's lap due to the lack of chairs and we were all sitting around the 30 inch tv in the living room. I was in complete awe and was freaking out over the attack on the Death Star. During the space battle my amazonian cousin bounced me on her knee to make it feel more immersive and even later picked me up and played Star Wars with me when we got dragged behind the boat on tubes the next day. Best weekend for pre-pubescent me ever! In fact, that was the last summer before I hit puberty.
