Air Philippines Flight 541 crashed on approach into Davao City. Weather includes a very low cloud ceiling. The Pilots abort their initial landing attempt, moments later, the plane crashed becoming the deadliest aviation accident to ever occur in The Philippines.

Great work, as always - just one remark - in published instrument charts and procedures we refer to track/course, not headings as these are dependant on winds.
What does it mean to re vector a plane?
Captain: Son, I've been flying these birds since before you were born.
1st Officer: Sir, I was born yesterday.
Captain: Crap
😂
Captain: Bruh
“The co-pilot was also a Captain at just 22 years old.” Oh and “this crew had not been trained in Crew Resource Management”… I can’t see any possible way this could end badly.
true xD
Reminds me of the "there is a child in the cockpit" episode 🤣😅
@@thecon_quererarbitraryname6286aeroflot 593.
sadly this was early in the 2000s crm was probably only a decade or so. and many airlines where not yet fully implementing it back then. and just like most. airforce pilots are in the cockpit where seniority is always the rule. crm was introduced to remove that thinking that you are not in the military anymore. where the capt is not the only voice allowed. which is why is didnt join the air force. cant tell me what to do hahaha
@@thecon_quererarbitraryname6286 youd be surprised how many pilots are in their early 20s
This disaster hit close to home because I live in Davao City. I was young when this happened, but I will never forget this tragedy. This accident doesn't get much coverage on YT, so thank you for doing so.
I was so young when this disaster happened.
Like you, I live in Davao City and I was reaching into Kindergarten. I remember this disaster after I've seen a clip on TV Patrol Davao since my parents and grandparents are always watching local news programs.
I'm not into news. I don't like watching news when I was a kid. I was waiting for a cartoon program when my parents really wanted to watch news every 5:00PM.
i feel like this can be taken literally (rip to everyone on board)
I was a flight attendant for Southwest Airlines in the 1980's and 1990's and well remember aircraft N29SW shown in this video. We had a pretty small fleet in those days and you got to know each aircraft's distinct peculiarities. N20SW and N21SW were the most hated by the flight attendants. Those older 737-200's were insanely loud in the cabin! I also flew on the Boeing 727's Southwest leased in the 80's. Those were a dream to work on. Sitting on the aft jump seat attached to the center exit door, you could watch the fuselage flex on take off. We weren't afraid of anything in those days...lol!
I remember being a passenger on one of those.
If you see this, which plane had the 3 backwards seats on the forward bulkhead? Was it the 737?
@@julieleimkuehler1409 Airlines, not the aircraft manufacturer, configure their seating arrangements on their airliners according to their specific needs. The Boeing 737 is usually configured with 2 rows of 3 seats with the aisle in the middle. Southwest Airlines had a row of 2 or 3 aft facing seats on the right hand side (when facing forward) at the forward bulkhead, at mid-cabin, and on the very last 2 rows on the right hand side, as well. They called these areas lounges.
I know I flew one from Midway to Columbus, Ohio. 96 or 97. So much fun. Was like a private party. A nice gentleman bought us all drinks.
@@aaronswafford4441 my Southwest flights were always fun. Pilots always seemed to have jokes.
I like the crew’s ages being shown along with the names.
As a Filipino, I never recalled the Philippines having airplane disasters, maybe except for the most recent one where a military aircraft boarded with military personnel, on its approach to land, missed the runway, skid and crashed at Jolo, Mindanao, southernmost Philipines.
Nevertheless, this video was very well made, informative, and packaged nicely. Pronunciations were on point too! It's always nice to listen to non-Filipinos pronounce names of places from the Philippines :) You just made my Saturday night here in the Philippines. Cheers!
Thanks so much for your comment
Believe it or not there are a shit ton of aviation incidents in the Philippines, most notably that CEB A320 overrunning the runway. I did get to ride that plane before it was sold to Allegiant.
There is one pa (5J-387) who crashed in Misamis Oriental 2 Years before 2P-541
Plenty of accidents in PH:
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Category:Aviation_accidents_and_incidents_in_the_Philippines
Same here before I heard of this flight and looked it up. PAL has apparently had 20+ accidents/incidents since the '40s (incl. hijackings and terrorist attacks).
Great sound track choice here especially - captures even more of the tension and highlights your writing style which I’m partial to. N of 1 though.
Hey i love your channel!!!!
Obvious pilot error, so sad that a pilot and crew not properly trained took over 100 souls with them when the plane crashed. Totally avoidable crash.
I have flown into this airport several times as a passenger. Beautiful city. Surrounded by low mountains on about three sides. They chose to fly over the Gulf. Crazy to fly vfr when you cannot see anything
Cultural differences definitely played a part too. If the co-pilots and other cockpit crew felt comfortable enough to suggest a missed approach and go around the instant they were 500 feet from the ground but couldnt see the runway, they would've been able to clear the forest and mountains and this crash never would've happened. The fear of challenging authority in Asian countries didn't help in this situation
I live in the Philippines and fly Philippine Airlines regularly, love them, very friendly yet professional crews. I am originally from Australia but the Philippines is my home now
Another excellent video about a crash that isn’t often talked about here on CZcams. 👏👏
As a Filipino and fan of your channel, I can say you nailed the pronounciation of the names (exception is davao where the o is pronounced sharply like "davau" or "davaw"). The video is as always excellent.
Another great video by Disaster Breakdown. Thank you for taking the time to make these amazing videos. Stay safe and healthy my friend.
Mabuhay Philippines. Thank you very much for making this content. Now, I know what have had happen to Air Philippines in 2000. Thank you for the content.
Your videos are a great way to wake up on a Saturday morning. 😊
Best video to watch on a Saturday night 👍 Keep up your good work. Already excited for the next video :D
I love your videos so much!!!! It’s all so informative and amazing!!!
Wow what a preventable accident. Good job with the video. Subscribed
If for some odd chance you ever run out of air line crashes, could you do ship wrecks?
He's just gonna make more crashes

Another well-made, informative, and insightful video. I know you probably hear this a lot, but you are by far the best channel covering aviation incidents. This channel is going to blow up even more than it already has. Cheers
Great work man!
Another great report
Thank you for another great video!
Thanks
Me, as a whole lives in Davao, I'm very sad for everybody who died and who were trying to go back to their relatives. 😢
Great upload and reporting.

3 A total Safety culture change. in all the Philippines Aviation Industry.
The aircraft on this video is not the actual aircraft but similar to the one involved in the fatal accident.
The aircraft involved has stripes on each side of the fuselage. This aircraft in the video is the new livery but logo is still the same.
I never seen this video before and it's been 22 years since this accident? My condolences go out to all the family may they all rest in peace
Breakdown of some inaccuracies:
1) A330 not A319 (leading traffic PAL809)
2) Circling Approach requires jet aircraft to maintain 1500ft, GAP541 maintained 500 ft as it tries to intercept the final approach fix of VOR/DME RWY 23 approach.
3) GAP541 was still on 7 nm final RWY 05 when it requested to do a circling approach due to the leading traffic PAL809 A330-300, making a 180º turn at the end of the runway.
4) cause of the accident: CFIT - Controlled flight into terrain.
Overall, good video and well-researched.
Some little corrections here, on circling approach, it is not required to maintain 1500 ft, the procedure is to maintain visual with the runway then level of and make the right turn, (might be lower than 1500 ft if visibility is below 1500ft might also be higher than 1500ft if good weather). The key is there is a circling minimum at which if runway is not visible upto the circling minimum, then a circling is not allowed
Wow, idk that the Aircraft before the Air Philippines 737-200, is a A330-300 from PAL.
Please do Cebu Pacific flight 387 in the future.
The Flight 541 crash occurred 2 years after Flight 387 since both planes crashed in the island of Mindanao just 2 years prior.
Up
The plane crashed on a small island off Mindanao. I love going to the beaches of Samal Island. 😁
Yes I agree he should do a disaster breakdown video about this..
Mr Disaster Breakdown, are you able to recommend books on aviation / aviation language for beginners?
I used to live in the district where the city faces the Samal Island, I was such a young kid around this time, I was about to be 4 yrs old. I only hear about this incident through local gossips and news archives, but I never really knew the exact explanation and the detailed breakdown of the incident. Thank you for this!
Btw, the part where the plane starts to tilt gives me gossebumps because the supposed vegetation looks exactly like ours. Felt like it happened in front of me.
These breakdowns get better everyday
Thanks for covering this. i remember the accident very well. I happened to fly into Davao the day after the crash and it was a very somber mood at the airport. Just a couple of comments:
Capt Catipay (last syllable rhymes with “pie”) was a company check airman and was conducting a route check on Capt Sardalla. There is no way the latter was only 22 years old when the crash occurred. I know there are some references floating around on the internet stating such but they are inaccurate.
The company that leased the aircraft to Air Philippines was sued in a US court, where plaintiffs won a $165M settlement.
I live and was born in the Midwestern US with my Dad born in Baguio City and my Mom born about 2 hours away from Davao City. When she saw this, she told me she knew somebody on the flight. RIP to everyone onboard.
i remember this crash when i was a kid, was wondering when someone would make this video. my dad's best friend's sister and her family were on the flight and remember attending the wake and funeral. my sister's classmate's father was on the flight as well. Davao maybe a large city by area but the community at the time was tight knit so it hit really close to home.
also i just wanna say i love your videos! and also i noticed a lot of the flights in your videos come from episodes previously covered by Air Crash Investigation/Mayday which i'm a big nerd of haha
Happy aniversary
I didn't think you post this :)
So lets go thick cloud which has a low ceiling and fly VFR. Sounds reasonable(Sarcasm).
Crazy they got uploaded to the Cloud like that

Perhaps it maybe the deadliest in the aviation history of Davao. But it's not the deadliest in aviation history overall.
Maybe try a Investigation Video like this of Cebu Pacific Flight 387, that Crashed in Mt. Sumagaya in Northern Mindanao landing to Cagayan De Oro International Airport in 1998.
A DC-9 aircraft.

I haven’t heard about this accident unless it wasn’t realised to the western countries.
Dude I’m not downplaying this yeah I’m just saying because if u do your research regarding airline disasters u will see most 3rd world countries crashes doesn’t make it to the new for example , did u know there was a pilot sucide by ethiopian airlines pilots 1 year before the Germanwings incident maybe not because it wasn’t shared to the other parts of the world because it happened in a 3rd world country if that was incident was shared to other countries the German wings incident would have been avoided because the investigators involved in the ethiopian airlines crash. That’s wat I’m trying to say some incident aren’t shared to other parts of the world unless it’s to late to change pilots, equipment or other things that can cause disasters. Hopefully u get what I meant instead of just saying things.
@@tishnarayan2011Yeah, it sucks because the media only focus on western incident instead of the non-western incident that it could be preventive from happening.
Clarification: the pilot suicide-homicide incident in 2013 prior to the 2015 Germanwings A320 suicide-homicide incident wasn’t happened in Ethiopia/ wasn’t involved an Ethiopian flight. Instead it was a LAM Mozambique flight that was involved in a suicide-homicide incident that was happened in Namibia.
Whats going on with the GPWS?
1:30 the caption says "American boring 737" 😂
I didn't realise cause I didn't have captions on but its so funny when I realised it lol
Hopefully they update everything inside the airplane , or do upgrades so this won’t happened again , goodness sake ! Rest n peace
You use the phrase "to which" very often, and almost always incorrectly. Maybe just double check your script for these errors.
Otherwise, thanks for the content and keep up the good work!
Yes! It was really grating by the fifth or sixth time.
Thanks. Now I can't stop noticing, either.

Pinoys are going to love this video, anything to do with Philippines will bring them all out ,
What does it mean to re vector a plane?
how about a SiLA Airlines Flight 51 (Nightmare Fog)???
If only the plane vectored to do the standard miss landing approach, or they could have vectored in the strait going back to runway 05 to fly over water instead of trees/mountains given that the vertical visibility is already horrible. But, they still chose to vector via samal island to lineup with runway 23 where the ground is elevated plus the low vertical visibility. Does not make any sense.
I'm seeing a pattern; flying hours don't matter.
Sir, that airport is actually the one I go to for plane spotting, because one of my houses is located at the southwestern side of the airport, making it a great place to watch planes. Oh, and I think the PAL airplane ahead of Flight 541 was a Boeing 737-300 or -400, since PAL introduced the A319 to the fleet in 2006, then being retired in 2014.
Too bad PAL hasn't its A340s anymore. They were just so lovely.
@@julosx yah, and they were retired before i could fly on one
There are conflicting accounts that either an A320 or A330 was on the runway at the time of go-around.
@@krflies9840 I think it is either A330, 737-300 or A320-200, cause PAL's A319s were introduced in 2006.
It was an A330 that landed ahead of Flight 541
Air Philippines Flight 541 was a scheduled domestic flight operated by Air Philippines from Ninoy Aquino International Airport in Manila to Francisco Bangoy International Airport in Davao City. On April 19, 2000, the Boeing 737-2H4 crashed in Samal, Davao del Norte while on approach to the airport, killing all 124 passengers and 7 crew members. It remains the deadliest air disaster in the Philippines and the third deadliest accident involving the Boeing 737-200, after Mandala Airlines Flight 091, which crashed 5 years later, and Indian Airlines Flight 113.[1]
0:00 - 0:20 for about 100 years(counting) i think barely anyone watching this would know that
Good vid anyways
Jesus, why this appeared on my page. I have a flight to RPMD in a few weeks. 🥶
Can I use your video without your copyright
Why r u showing a Thai 747 in your intro?
A GPWS that only gives a four second warning is totlly usless, it takes longer than that for the engines to spool up to full power, let alone making the aircraft change altitude.
IT looks like the pilots couldn't see where they were
Oh really ? Thanks captain obvious
how come the CVR has never been uploaded before in the internet, i cant find it.
CVRs from crashes are almost never released to the public. Also as a respect to the families of of the crew.
@@occamsrayzor7999 they should at least provide a transcription for the public so we can see what actually happened in the cockpit while the whole thing was going on
