On March 3rd, 1993, it was a cold morning in Skopje. A Passenger plane leaves the runway at the local airport for a short flight to Zurich. Just moments after leaving the ground the pilots suddenly find they have little control of their plane where it soon crashes moments later. The plane was operated by Palair, a small air carrier which served as the national flag carrier for what is now known today as North Macedonia.
The crash of Palair Macedonian Airlines Flight 301 was the first major incident to involve the Dutch built Fokker 100, a sleek short haul jet which was state-of-the-art at the time. So how does a modern plane crash just moments after leaving the runway?

Could you make a video about Western Airlines Flight WAL2605?
@@robertmcghintheorca49 how about the Tupolev which went above the storm and stalled in Ukraine?
Is there a book you recommend to learn more about understanding principles of flight ?
It would be nice if you could break down flight 992 of Dana Air that crashed due to a dual engine failure and pilot error as a contributing factor. I know someone that died on that flight. So making that video would mean a lot. 😊
this video was far from interesting.... its you that should pay me to watch your propaganda
I don't see see how ANYONE could have survived that crash. Unbelievable.
Same, because the plane hit the ground but it wasnt going straight down.
Some survivors died in hospital so there was a lone survivor
You should see Air China 129, the plane was completely obliterated but 37 people survived
Robert spony It's has more survived. You probably mix with Avioimpex flight 110 who crashed same year in Ohrid
@@robertspony1111"Some survivors died (...) a lone survivor"
Initially 14 survivors of which 4 died in hospital, leaving 10. Not a lone.
It sounds like you were trying to say Fokker as many times as possible. Respect!
It totally does. I couldn't stop snickering each time he says it. 😹
@@G3dg3t He's done several videos about Fokker planes, and every single time I hear him say it, I giggle like a school kid. I'm so immature, LOL!
@@Mochrie99 Don't worry I'm immature too.
It's not just me then? Hahaha.
Mother...! 😁
The other pilot's name was Vlado Stojčev, 34, Macedonian. It is mentioned in an interview with the surviving flight attendant (I will post the link in reply). I'm Macedonian and really appreciate that someone has made a video about this disaster, great work. The safety of air travel was really poor in those days as this was the second fatal accident in a span of just 16 months which is terrible for such a small country with only 2 airports. In november 1993 a yak 42-avioimpex flight 110 crashed on landing killing all 116 people due to inoperational vor and atc misundersranding (the crew spoke russian and english and the atc macedonian which is unimaginable these days). When it comes to fokker, whenever one landed at skopje since the accident (until recently austrian airlines regularly used them) they would litterally "bathe" it with de-ice. So at least it seems that we've learned from this accident and thankfully air travel is much safer today.
"Dutch build fokker 100'
Can imagine a few people without subtitles on misinterpreting that
Read it just as he said it 🤣
I flew the F100 many times back in the ‘90s. The flight attendants rarely, very rarely, would use the full name of the manufacturer during safety briefings. It was just “…the safety features of this F100 aircraft.”
The fact people survived this accident is beyond amazing. I saw images of the remains of the only infact looking part of the aircraft (the cockpit), the entire right side of it was missing, everything inside of the cockpit was missing like it was scooped out and there was practically nothing left behind the cockpit. The rest of the aircraft was completely unrecognizable say for a bit of the tail, they must've been extremely lucky.
They died later in the hospital :(
@@humbertoferrera522 13 passengers and 1 crew member survived, 4 later died in hospital, so 10 survived the entire thing
@Cee Dee Oh ok.
They didn't
2:47 - Now that's a striking paintjob.
I can't imagine what those passengers went through as they saw and felt the plane out of control. Some were likely looking out of the windows as they neared their certain doom. So heartbreaking to imagine
So true...seen the movie passengers?

This happened in my home city Skopje and I've never heard about this accident. I'm pleasantly supprised that you covered this accident. Keep up the good work !
😳 woow. They taught you how to speak English in school too? Just curious, because I think that's amazing
@@5thdawg917Yes we're learning in school from 4th grade. Almost everyone 40 years and younger speaks english.
Probably you're too young 😉
И јас сум од Скопје и јас не сум слушнал за овој несреќен случај. Можеби не сум слушнал затоа што сум роден во 1999 година.
I hadn’t heard of this - thank you for the awesome coverage again! 5:55 This is unreal it happened when inside a year USAir 405 served as a very real reminder of icing issues with the Fokker
That's what scares the hell out of me. I'm always seeing these airline crashes that I've never heard of and thinking there so many crashes that I don't even know about!

You mentioned JAT in this video. You should do a video on JAT 367. It was an infamous incident that includes the longest free fall that ended in survival by one of the flight attendants.
Ice and fire - the two most deadly natural phenomena for planes. What a sad crash - it could have been prevented. Thank you for a great video!

This accident Brother did not happen in North Macedonia but in Macedonia.
I found your channel by accident. loved what you do, binged all your videos. not old enough to become a patreon tho, keep up the great work!
By accident you’re saying
I feel like I have 30.000 flying hours under my belt with all the info I have learned on your channel
Working in the German Federal Police, the Former Border Guard (Bundesgrenzschutz), I met two colleagues that were once in an airplane accident. One of them had a bit of a limp and the other's skin was a bit reddish. Turns out, both are the result of Burns from the crash.
They and several colleagues deported a Number of people to Macedonia and were on the way back to Germany.
I Always wondered what had happened, thanks for the Video.
There isn't much video YT content regarding this tragic accident. Good to see it. What puzzles most is why would the captain-under-training name be disclosed. It also seemed that most passengers were Kosovar gastarbeiters living in Switzerland.
OK bro
In case everybody is wondering what the captains last name means: Beer carrier.
The German have fantastic surname creativity. I know alot of other ethnicities do this also but german really is special. Part of that might be the relative ease that English speakers can guess what they mean. bierdrager = Beer Dragger = Someone who move beer around. Its beautiful :)
Edit: the name is german, the man was dutch. i got confused
Pretty cool..and you're beutiful 😁💥💯
@@captainpotato6856 ahh thanks 😊...... 🤪 🤣
@dražen g I obviously don't know what I'm talking about so I don't want to debate the differences or similarity of Dutch and german. Google said his name is German, not deutch or Dutch. so I changed my comment to say I like German names instead of I like Dutch names.....maybe it's the same language, idk. I was pretty sure the Dutch language is not the German language so..
@dražen g nationality, language, and ethnicity are 3 very different things. There are Mexican Americans who only speak english..... mexican=ethnicity, american=nationality, english=language. Hence why I clarified the man was dutch(nationality) and his name was german(language).
As much as it is a deadly crash, I simply can't get enough over those RR Tay 620 engines, really gives nostalgic vibes like the PW JT8D
Yeah. I flew on one a couple of years ago in Iran. Superb!
Dutch make the best Fokkers.
Nice to see someone breaking down not so commonly known accidents.
Great coverage of this incident, love your videos!
I can't believe anyone could survive that!
No one to blame except the cockpit. They should have erred on the side of caution and had the aircraft deiced again
Again?
@@imadrifter Again?
Maybe it was deiced the previous week......(-;
Love your content. No "paid promotions" and no bullshit. The facts presented in a clear and concise manner.
Paid Promotions are ruining CZcams and I'm quickly running out of content creators to watch.
Please, don't 'sell out' like so many others have. We appreciate what you do!!

Just skip the advert, you melt. People need money if they're gonna make content as often as you want to consume it.
so glad i found this channel, these videos are so fascinating
Great breakdowns, keep it up
Thank you!
saturday here, time for a new plane vid. love these so much! :)
I’m loving these!
Amazing video. Hope you gain more and more subscribers! I had a bad experience last time I got on a plane so I don’t think I’ll have the guts to travel by air again in the near future but these videos are so interesting! Wished you would do more Disaster Averted since those give a little more hope for the anxiety ridden like me lol it’s nice to see when the accident doesn’t claim lives.
In this one at least one soul survived :/ it’s so unbelievable since the manner in which the plane crashed destroyed all of the plane. Can’t believe what the people inside saw or felt before their demise. RIP
I love watching your videos
Very informative - great video 👍
ive bingewatched most of your videos lately, its so interesting, really starting to fall in love with planes and the engineering behind them, thank you for creating these kinds of videos and keep it up
I was wondering if you can do a breakdown on the crash of Flight 3407. That crash was also an icing incident and is local to me. I love how well and thorough your breakdowns are and would be thankful for one on this unfortunate crash.
Another great one 👌
I watched your video from a week ago just before watching this one and that was a plane due to land at Zurich, the same as this one. Talk about coincidence!! Great video as always. Informative and detailed as well as interesting.
I always wonder how many hours of research you do before releasing a video. You provide great analysis and in depth information so I always presume it takes 20+ hours.
Research is always on going. I do it all the time in the background. Accident reports are a great help.
@@DisasterBreakdown great work!
Hi! Love your videos.
Amazing anyone survived. Another lesson learned about taking no chances regarding ice buildup.Great video!
The fokker 28and 100 to my knowledge is especially susceptible to icing. There are at least 2 other incidents where these aircraft crashed due to ice/snow buildup. One of those being the Dryden airport crash.
That aside,I really love the fokker 100,it's a beautiful little airliner with a lot of heritage behind its name
good work
I've said it before, Anthony, I could listen to you say "Fokker" all day. All kidding aside, great presentation. I'm not familiar with this incident. How terrifying those moments of extreme bank angle must have been. Tragic.
Fun fact, the guy who founded fokker was named anthony
wanted to ask about the background music at 7:00, then I saw you wrote them in the desc, you are the best!!
As a note, both the Fokker 70 and Fokker 100 were based on the older Fokker 28.
As a further note, the F-100 started out as the MDF-100. A bunch of Fokker engineers were at Long Beach for several months, until the companies found that they weren't able to agree on much regarding the various design choices.
Awesome 👍👍👍
Im from macedonia and never knew something like this happened. May the people rest in peace.
Probably you're too young 😉
a former friend of mine iss too.
I don't know why but the inner child in me always giggles when I hear the name Fokker. I work for an aviation company and I am responsible for the light balancing of the panels in many different aircrafts. Fokker in addition to many others are one of our clients.
The last name of the captain translated to English is beer carrier
The crash happened on march 5th and not 3rd. Thank you for the video.
What book(s) do you recommend for understanding aviation better? Also any for learning more about aviation disasters? Thanks !
EXCELLENT VIDEO !!!!!!!! ICEY WINGS is a phenomenon that has haunted the thoughts of many of us frequesnt flyers... Loved hearing the details of it.
As someone who flies at least four times a year I probably shouldn’t be watching these videos, but they are so interesting.
This is incredibly vapid of me but I just now thought "I wonder why all these videos are sad endings" and realized that we will never hear about the happy ending flights as those are not outwardly interesting or special to outsiders. I guess I just impressed upon myself how thankless a job pilots have in a way. Only really hear their stories rooted from tragedy or ineptitude.
How on earth did anyone survive this? Enjoying your videos and explanations as always 🤩
Very sad they didn't de-ice. I flew on one of US Airways, might have been USAir at the time, Fokker 100;s. Nice plane. I enjoyed that flight. Probably because I was the only one in the row.
Thanks for bringing this up, I didn`t know it, I am dutch and yes the Focker planes were great ones. I knew someone in the past who worked for Focker. Pittely Focker doesn`t exist anymore.
Have the deicing trucks at the head of the runway deicing the wings a few minutes before take off instead of deicing the wings at the Terminal 20 to 60 minutes before take off. How hard is that to figure out....
That was a Fokking good video.
Captain Bierdrager: Hold my beer please. Oh wait...
I'm cracking up every time I hear the title. I know that's not that it is, but that's all I can hear. Sorry and thank you for sharing this.
If memory serves, the aircraft did not have any L/E devices, and as a "hard wing" aircraft, that made it more susceptible to the effects of icing on the leading edge. See Air Ontario 1383 at Dryden, and Continental 1713 at DEN. USAir 405 at LGA as well.
Just heard about a plane crash that happened over my city. United Airlines flight 629. It seems like a pretty interesting story. The person responsible wasn’t charged for blowing up an airplane because that law didn’t exist yet. Only was charged with 1 count of Murder and not the 44 he killed. Law came into place soon after which criminalized blowing up an airplane.
The cursor cameo is a nice touch. LOL
Rest in peace to everyone in that crash. Idk how 14 people managed to survive, that seemed like a very fatal crash. And apparently there is a CVR for this but it audio has never been leaked but this is what was heard:
05 : 36 First Officer Gear up
05 : 38 Captain Gear up
05 : 39 Captain Ah sh**!
05 : 40 First Officer What is it?!
05 : 40 Captain Oh! Deselect!
05 : 43 Commentary Sound of autopilot chime 2x
05 : 45 Commentary Sound of sink rate warning 2x
05 : 48 Unidentified Oh...
05 : 48 Commentary End of recording
Did CZcams flag this video for spamming the F-bomb?
What a great Fokken video!
I remember the case verry well, as wel as i remember Capt Peter Bierdrager (who was also a training captain on other Foker types). At the time i was not yet familiar to the Fokker-100 though i did have first hand information.
Fokker never had expected that the first 100 crashed would be piloted by their own training captain.
(There was indeed a bet going on which airline would be the first victim)
What a bloody mess
1:46 its written as aircraft financing & training, but you said aircraft financing and trading.
I thought it was an MD-80. I hate the videos where the planes roll over and crash. It's so terrifying to me!
Australia is the home for rare 80s planes like the metro liner EMB120 bae 146 Saab 340 Fokker 70 and 100
Yeah but what about the plane it was based on, the Möther Fohker 100?
"copilot's name unknown" This doesn't bode well...
Does anybody know the freezing temperature of H2O?
This is so horrifying and chilling
I would’ve loved to hear the blooper reel
you should cover flight 232 that crashed in Iowa
Too much de-icing is better than not enough.
Watching this video makes me realize how immature I am ...
Can you do FDX 705? Attempted hijacking by Fedex pilot in 1994, would make for a great video imo!
kinda ironic that the plane was given permission to takeoff at 11:11
this was a script and set off
So why have engine generated de-icers when they don't work?
The engine anti-ice de ices the engine. The wing anti-ice de ices the wing leading edge. To do the whole wing you have to get de iced.
wow
There is a story about Douglas Bader , who was giving a lecture at school about the spitfire.
He quotes , I was flying along and 3 Fokkers came out of the sun at me ,The teacher interrupts with , "A Fokker is a type of German aircraft" , He replied ,,
" Yes , But these Fokkers were flying Messersmitts " , Dunno if it is true but it sounds like him , he was a bit of a character,,
And all I keep thinking is ”- but these Fokkers were Messersmitts!” Thanks for another fascinating, yet, jokes aside, so tragic go through of a case.
Crew do multiple walk arounds and look for ice, worry about ice. Decline anti icing
A repeat of the Dryden, Ontario crash and the USAir crash at LGA.
Respect to you Chloe, fantastic job!!!
P.S.......... isn't it great to say "Fokker" a lot without getting into trouble??😂
You should do United Airline Flight 232
You would think planes that were just deiced would have priority for take off, then planes landing.
My dad tried to buy tickets from a man on this flight because his brother was dying of cancer, so he wanted to make it in time to see him alive. The man refused to sell my dad the ticket, and my dad had to drive to Tirana to catch another flight.
Later, he learned the plane had crashed. If he got those tickets, I likely would never be born. Crazy world.
Did you heard of the crash of air-inter in Noiretable (France ) in 1972 with something like 60 deads and a few survivors . Maybe could It be intresting for your Channel. ...
I was too busy being a child and laughing at him saying Fokker, what happened?
on the same day on the plane crash the first episode of season 2 of sailor moon was air.
Can you do germanwings flight 9525
How could you POSSIBLY survive that
Small point: JAT is actually pronounced "Y-a-t", or according to IPA: [jât].
This video is sickening to watch. Thank you for bringing us a crash not known to most, including me.
