I've been a musician for some 40+ years and have listened to a lot of music, from rap and soul to funk, rock, punk, reggae, classical, baroque and beyond, but there's only one band that still gets me going every time. There is NO ONE like Zeppelin. It's not just their individual and collective virtuoso skills, improvisational or song-writing genius, it's that "it" factor. Collectively, they were by far a total phenome, the 8th wonder of the world. Pure, unadulterated genius.
Fulsome praise indeed - totally deserved. They are Zeus in the pantheon of legendary groups.
Zeppelin came toward the end of the British Invasion. Most people didn't realize it at the time, but those British musicians brought Blues back to America and kids ate it up. They grew up hearing Mississippi Blues on the BBC Radio and the American Armed Forces Radio Network at the end of WWII. Groups like Zeppelin and Cream were playing Electric Blues Rock from the acoustic blues riffs they heard on the radio as kids.
I live to see young people appreciating good musicianship and talent

LZ came about after the British Invasion (Beatles, Rolling Stones, Kinks, Dave Clark Five, The Who, etc.) No singer in any band at that time sounded anything like Robert Plant...he was a force of nature that took the pop music world by storm.
Btw, Sweet Home Alabama by Lynyrd Skynyrd, was released five years after this.
Right! And of course The Yardbirds were part of the British Invasion too, with a young Jimmy Page in the band. So Jimmy got to be part of the wave before he'd even dreamt of Zeppelin.💙

Many of their songs sampled the great blues artists of the Mississippi Delta in the 20's. "When the Levee Breaks" is about a real flood and from a song written in '27.
The British invasion was The Beatles, The Rolling Stones, The Who, The Zombies etc. Led Zeppelin really wasn't part of the first bands or artists to come over from England in 1963 or 64. These guys hit the scene in late 1968. So much great music in the 60s and 70s.

It’s a pedal steel guitar making that high pitched sound. A pedal steel guitar is used in alot of old country songs.

That wasn't a violin bow, Page was playing but a 10-string steel guitar. I believe it was he first time he had ever played one.

Jimmy Page is using a Pedal Steel guitar as the lead. Pure Genius.
I read in an interview he said it wasn't even assembled properly! He was very good at it because he has feel.
Robert Plan is the golden god that many rock singers tried to emulate a decade after Led Zep exploded on the scene. Zep came in at the tail end of the British Invasion. The Beetles, the Rolling Stones and the Who were the more in the heart of the British Invasion.

Guitarist Jimmy Page wrote this song after a breakup and plays a pedal steel guitar. It's also one of the few songs they all harmonize on. When Zep started, they did have just a little bit of leftover, recognizable 60s stylings, however, they were to turn the 70s on its head.
The sliding guitar bendy guitar sound is a "peddle steel guitar" -- one slides a heavy slide across the strings and there are foot pedals w rods attached to the strings --- while the player is sliding and plucking strings -- they have the option of pushing the pedals down with their feet, which bends the pitch of the string or strings they are playing --- to get that bendy country sound. This is also an acoustic guitar based song -- on their first album, so Jimmy was using the acoustic guitar on their 1st album -- as well as their 2nd album and then a bit more on their 3rd album and then a lot again on their fourth album.
That vibrato Plant does when he sings thinkin' I'm someone new. Guy had just turned 21. Holy shit they were not playing right out of the gate, like they had already lived a million years in time.

That was a great reaction -off balance again. Regarding the British invasion is started in the early sixties spearheaded by the Beatles and rolling stones but including many great bands. You will be interested that all those guys acknowledge the American blues artists as early influences - i know you were suprised about that with LZ but all the British bands did. At some stage you might like to check out Cream -White room , The animals - house of the rising sun, The zombies- she's not there, Rolling stones- paint it black , Procul Harum - whiter shade of pale , The moody Blues -nights in white satin and the yardbirds who were the precursors to Led Zep - they also do a version of dazed and confused. This will give you a taste of what happened. oh and the Who -My Generation. In the mean time keep up the led Zep!! You are right about Plants vocals - he inspired the next generation of rock vocalists.
I always feel like i need to go to church after listening to Zeppelin but i also feel like i was just in heaven too.
"Your Time Is Gonna Come" kicked off side two of the album, so less "going to church in the morning" and more getting up and turning the record over! [grin] It's the flower power counterpart to the hard psychedelic blues. Led Zeppelin landed in 1969, five years after the British Invasion of 1964. Robert Plant dug Janis Joplin for sure. That's not a bow, that's a slide, played with a bottleneck or a short chromed pipe, possibly a pedal steel. "Sweet Home Alabama" came out in 1974, five years after this. Listen to the next two songs on the album back to back without any break between them if you can. That is how they arrive on the album, with "Communication Breakdown" kicking off the moment "Black Mountain Side" ends.
It is definitely a pedal steel. He uses it on a couple of tunes through the years.
It’s crazy to think that Plant and Bonzo were under drinking age when this album was made. It just seems that artist back then were more mature at an earlier age.

The acoustic may have been a Gibson J-200... I know that Jimmy Page used one for several of their recordings. Fun fact: Jimmy Page was a session guitarist prior to joining the Yardbirds and played on a LOT of Donovan's records, including "Season of the Witch" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man".

For a brilliant love song from Led Zep, check out The Rain Song, on The Houses of the Holy album! It is fantastic - it shows how genius all four were, yet remains as groovy as hell. Singing, instruments, technical inventiveness and pure class 🧡✨✨✨
It's not until you get into concept albums that it might be a good idea to them in their entirety, like Pink Floyd's - Animals or The Wall.
Tangerine was a song originally written by Page when he was with The Yardbirds. It had a different title "Knowing that I'm Losing You." It's allegedly about Page having a relationship with American singer Jackie DeShannon when she was in England to record. Jimmy was a studio musician.
She had to go back to the US and the relationship didn't work out. It didn't sound a lot like Robert bc he was singing in a lower sad sounding voice. It's a super sad song --- Robert knew the meaning behind it and grabbed it -- and used a super sad voice for it -- knowing the sensitivity of the song.
If you go back and listen to the song and right before the guitar solo --- there's brief a music break and he says in a super duper sad voice "...and, I do..." It's heartbreaking and so down sounding the way Robert says that line.
I was just a teenager then. I like that you guys bring in your musician's skills with your reactions. This LP was heavy blues. By their 3rd LP they were trying more Folk Rock (Tangerine, That's The Way, and Gallow's Pole). By Houses of the Holy, the blues influence was barely noticeable. But I'm no musician, just a fan. I'd be curious to hear your take.
That’s a Hammond B-3 Organ you’re hearing - with it’s Leslie speaker tag along. Hammond was actually dragged into court as pipe organ manufacturers tried to sue him. The sound of Hammond’s organ replicated the sounds of a pipe organ so precisely that they freaked out and brought him to court over it! The court favored Hammond after playing samples of both for all to hear.
The song that you were hearing in this one is Dear Mr. Fantasy by Traffic. Very similar lick in both songs.
Saw them twice in concert. You mentioned listening to Dazed in Confused, a song that's amazing in concert.

Before Plant, there was Terry Reid and Steve Mariott. In fact, Terry Reid was Page's first choice for Led Zep, but he declined and recommended Plant.

Jimmy Page played some live shows with the Black Crowes in the late 90’s and early 2000’s and performed this song , Ten Years Gone and several other Zeppelin songs. Great work with the Crowes. You guys should check it out ❤

Nobody knew how to build amazing songs better than Zeppelin. So freaking clever with arrangements which were done 90% of the time by John Paul Jones. Without JPJ creating so many phenomenal songs I’m not sure if Zeppelin would have risen to the genius level. Of course they would have been a force just on the merits of musicianship and Plant’s amazing vocals. Just wanted to emphasize how truly brilliant and talented John Paul Jones was from building/arranging songs, superb keyboard work and straight up BADASS bass player. ❤
Steel lap guitar..like you see in old country bands. But yes does do bow on other songs, also jimmy used 12 string guitars, and mandolins...unheard of in Rock n Roll at the time.

The spirit of Johann Sebastian Bach channeled through John Paul Jones on this one. This is one of the most profound and beautiful "church organ" songs ever written, and that's coming from someone who was an alter boy in the US Episcopal (Anglican) Church in 1969.

Plants voice was always stellar in Zep, but there is something about this first group of recordings that is so powerful and pure. Maybe it is that this first album was so bluesy.

One more thing, Jimmy Page is a god with a guitar-this is a fact. But Stevie Ray Vaughan was Motzart, Picasso and Da Vinci with one. For a mind blowing experience, send the song Little Wing through those headphones. It’s an instrumental Jimi Hendrix cover that kind of bends space-time as it moves through the air. The bulk of the British invasion was between 1964 - 67 . Led Zeppelin was a rebirth of the Yardbirds who started in 1963

Zeppelin is that group of dudes that were just better than everyone else! Every front man of most rock and roll groups were trying to be like Robert Plant..by far the front man of front men! Zeppelin is the gold/platinum/diamond standard for rock bands.Drummers all wanted to play like Bonham and every guitar player wanted to be Jimmy Page. John Paul Jones was also played a huge part in the structuring of songs. Im guessin JPJ could play any instrument so much talent in this band just not fair to everyone else whom had to follow Zeppelin's lead. Could you IMAGINE playing after them that would be terrible anxiety for any artist to try and follow Zeppelin.
