    You need to hear this pair of songs on vinyl... there isn't even a break, it just hits that last note on Black Mountainside, and "Bam!" Communication Breakdown is ON! 🤘😎

      too late now ... all this music is meant to be listened to without pause at all ... there is ONE groove on each side of an LP ... drop the needle and go for the whole side ... people today have no idea what they are missing. It's tragic because they love music so much.@@lloydbraun6026

    This is Jimmy playing acoustic guitar with an open tuning of DADGAD. Jimmy sometimes called it his "CIA" (Celtic, Indian, Arabic) tuning because it contained those musical influences. He was accompanied by Indian tabla player, Viram Jasani. It is said to take some influence from Bert Jansch's song "Black Water Side". Jimmy used to perform a version of this called "White Summer" when he was with The Yardbirds that he would rework into this for Zeppelin. There is a great 12-minute video of him performing this (known as "White Summer/Black Mountain Side) with only Bonzo providing occasional accompaniment. Communication is proto-punk. They did their best to always stay ahead of the game and push new horizons whether it was in production techniques, song structure, instrumentation, different genres - everything.

    I love the story of when the four of them first got together to try things out, and they played "Train Kept A-Rollin'" ...and the magic was IMMEDIATELY there. The chemistry was there, right from the start. JPJ said he has a big grin on his face as he realized "this is gonna be good." How right he was!

    "Black Mountain Side" was played on a Gibson J-200 acoustic guitar, according to Wikipedia. The preferred string gauge for that guitar is medium (.013, .017, .026, .035, .045, .056 diameters in inches). Strings of that thickness are not likely to break even when played hard and fast. On the record (and the cd) the gap between the two songs is shorter than what you managed (not faulting you) -- basically just enough time to take a breath before "Communication Breakdown" kicks off. Wikipedia also relates a tale Jimmy Page told about a joint interview he once did with writer William S. Burroughs who suggested to Page that he should visit Morocco to investigate the hypnotic power of Arabic music. Page and Plant followed up on that and the result was the song "Kashmir" from their Physical Graffiti album among several others. Meanwhile, "Communication Breakdown" pointed the way towards punk rock and speed metal in the years that followed. I suspect it may also have inspired the Black Sabbath song "Paranoid". As for the remaining two songs on LZ I -- don't discount the blues just yet! [grin] PS. Page and Jones were session musicians before LZ, so they arrived with studio chops in place. You can hear their work on some of Donovan's tunes, "Sunshine Superman" and "Hurdy Gurdy Man" in particular.

Got his first drum set at 7 y/o and was off and running! Jimmy is playing the guitar like a sitar. Here's another funny tidbit when you guys talked about them being playboys - Robert was asked one time what it was like getting head at 35, 000 ft (in the jet they leased for three tours, called The Starship - and he said "the turbulence" - hilarious!

  • @jimmycompton6352
    @jimmycompton6352 Před rokem +2

    My 2 cents on led zeppelin's greatness. I 100% agree that each is the best to do it at their particular craft. Like john paul jones doesn't just play base. He plays organ,piano mandolin and melatron which is basically a keyboard with recorded wind instruments,string instruments etc. He sometimes played base with his feet, while playing the keyboard. Robert plant plays tambourine and harmonica in addition to having and incredible voice. Some live shows jimmy page played mandolin instead of jones on the battle of evermore. On gallows pole jimmy page borrowed john paul jones banjo (had never played one) and played it on the recording.In addition to acoustic and electric guitar (even with a violin type cello bow) along with a thing called a theremin which was something he waved around in front of an amp and created erie feedback type sound.Awesome! And bonzo is just bonzo. But to me there is song writing (lyrics) and music writing. Jimmy page also produced their stuff, and that is where he really shined if you ask me. A lot of people compare him to stevie ray, or jimmie hendrix which i get. But the riffs that he wrote are so iconic and brilliant and some of the stuff he did in mixing and producing, wow.

    When it comes to electric stuff, Zep obviously revered the American blues men; their acoustic music inspiration comes from two killer Scottish folk players named Davey Graham and Bert Jansch. It was Graham who heavily experimented with Indian and Middle Eastern music and DADGAD "sitar" guitar tuning.

    There was a great British guitarist named Bert Jansch who made this style acoustic style of playing popular in the 60s. I think Page was accused or ripping off Jansch, maybe even in this song. I like to think he was just heavily borrowing and paying homage. LZ borrowed heavily from many musicians, more than they let on in the early days. "Communication Breakdown" on the other hand is LZ practically inventing a new style of hard rock guitar playing.

    I came to Zeppelin out of the blue. Early nineties knew nothing about them UK London they were nowhere on the scene when I became a man, I knew no one that played them or talked about them and I knew a lot of people all across London as a kid, no one was into them they had suffered the SO CALLED punk revolution in the late 70s and the 80s were the 80s, by the time I got to 91 as an 18 year old man growing through that I can tell you Led Zeppelin were gone. Nobody played them, nobody talked about them and that is why I knew nothing about them. I had vaguely heard stairway, but it was a very distant song on the radio as a child.
    Then one fateful night passing the time as I was wont to do by various means with a few friends and a girl called Lucy, The Doors being my guys, thought I knew what I knew and thought I knew what I knew was what I knew, a friend played a compilation tape and one of those songs was Babe I'm Gonna Leave You. What happened during that song still remains a mystery to me and the conscious mind I inhabit, although repeated many times as I went through the discovery of this band and saw, or perhaps felt such brilliance as to be indescribable, a shortcut like this under the deliberate design of our minds in this life comes with a heavy price I still endure in part to this day.
    There are things known and then there are things unknown. Led Zeppelin will always be, unknown.

Very funny intro, only about 2 plus minutes long. The Kennedy Center honors several icons in the music or dramatic arts and is presented & recorded every year in Wash. DC (except for the Trump years), and there are a lot of DC bigwigs and celebs in the audience there. What's up guys? I just saw your Stevie Ray Vaughan Texas Flood reaction video. It's great to see people your age appreciate great talent when they see it. If you want to be blown away by top level musicianship check out Frankenstein by Edgar Winters group 1973 video. It will blow you away!!! Then check out Edgar Winter Johnny Winter Tobacco Road video. Talk about next level. Enjoy, peace.

      He produced the album too! 4 musical geniuses! I was 10 in 1970 when I first heard this album...I loved them ever since!! Nobody better!

      @@juliemanarin4127 I was 16 in 1970. Yeah, Jimmy produced all of their albums. They had the perfect manager for the time as well. He was about the band and prevented them from being robbed blind like Queen and others were.

    Please react to Led Zeppelin in concert, with John Bonham's epic drum solo during the song "Moby Dick." If you already have, sorry. If you haven't yet, then please get on it. You'll never listen to, or picture "Bonzo" in the same way again. It's a masterpiece.
    Thanks Fellas.
