    Celtic Frost, Voivod and Mekong Delta were so innovative back in the mid to late 80s, they were vital in pushing the genre in interesting directions, they may have jettisoned some die-hard conventional metalers along the way, but for those that appreciated experimentation it was an exciting time.

    Trve Honesty is Positively disarming - two lines only in this excellent conversation, the one about his musical relevance compared to the state of the world, and the one about his compatriot detractors for half of his career, would suffice to prove the mark of the ''warrior'' he projected, as immensely truthful. I've been listening to his music since 84, and we all look up at his prowess and commitment in respectful awe, but i'm sure he'd be the first to tell us to cut the crap.

    I was trying to decide what I wanted to play. Went right into Circle of the Tyrants.
    Tom G Warrior has made such a huge difference in my life. While I don’t play in bands anymore, playing along to old CF records is still such a joy in my life. If you haven’t just sat and played along to Celtic Frost, I highly recommend it.

    Perhaps Cold Lake might be viewed in a different light had the band's image not changed so drastically during that period .. I happen to like Cold Lake, and I think a lot of people listen to those songs with their eyes .. Tom is great and very honest and sincere, and this interview is a pleasure to listen to - and immediately after his comments on Cold Lake, Tom says that Celtic Frost was an "experimental band" - and there should be no shame in doing something that is NO expected by the majority of fans - and in 1988, Cold Lake was certainly NOT what fans saw coming .. and isn;t that part of being a an artist, just sort of throwing caution to the wind and doing what you feel at that moment in time ? ... In disowning the album, Tom is probably bringing even more attention to it, and ironically, keeping it alive ..

    • @RautaMetal
      @RautaMetal  Před 2 lety +2

      I agree about what you said about Cold Lake. It surely was a brave jump at the time. I think my friend described it well: "It's what you'd expect from a metal artist when he's doing an album with his zipper open". It's not bad as such, but it certainly doesn't fit CF's bill IMO. It was something that one might expect as a side-project. It could have evolved into something different, given with enough time, but compared to other CF albums, it's imo the worst.

    Speak of " artist " ... that instantly reminded me of this time I was reading an interview with Tom ( many years ago ) and in it he said sth to the effect of : " When me and Martin finished ´ Into the Pandemonium ` we were handed a tape and already outside in the car we were playing the tape , looked at one another and I said : ´ What the hell is this ? How did we record this ? ` " .
    it´s been 36 years ever since I 1st listened to " Into the Pandemonium " as a 14 year old ... I like to believe that the above elation, sense of awe ( these being the right terms ) Tom and Ain felt mirrors that moment in my life which I will never forget .
    Needless to say , still one of my favourite albums of all time , all styles considered .
    Music and art is much more than technical proficiency and other artifices of the sort ... a moment in time where all aligns ... and lingers .

      Listen to Monotheist if you want to experience some of the heaviest, darkest and best metal albums of all time. Thousand times better than their early stuff

      @@Annihilation_0f_The_Wicked9066 I’d argue that Mono and the old material are two quite different soundscapes and can’t be compared in that regard, really. They are both good on their own though. I’m getting more and more into Mono.. After this interview I really respect and value Tom as a musician and a human.. he seems amazing to just hang out with. Cheers!

      @@Forferdelse666 If you've listened to Tom's early and later Interviews(i'm sure that you have) you'll realize that he aimed for a style and sound like on Mono/Eparistera/Melana albums. I adore MT, TMT but i think they really reached their peak on Mono. That was the album wanted to write since day one. Diverse, interesting, innovative, crushingly heavy, dark. It captured the essence of the band. Maybe i'm going a bit in depth here but i never realized any of this when i discovered them. All i knew that they were hugely influential. Years later did i start to really appreciate them. Hellhammer/CF/Triptykon is a single band for me. Due to unfortunate circumstances had to change their name. Tom is one of the greatest human beings i've ever read about with a background similar to mine. I'd probably faint if i meet him cos he's one of the people i look up to the most. He's a far more intelligent and down-to-earth person than any of those Hollywood f*****s. I think i got a little carried away woth this comment but i like to express myself. I'd pay good money if Tom could re-record the Hellhammer songs under the Triptykon name.

    What an artist! The part where he answered your "Why not go with Hellhammer name" question was my favorite. Regardless of genre, lyrical theme or medium of art - when it comes outside of music - I look for genuineness and honesty. This not something one can measure in any way but can sense it deep inside. Even when an artist are not to my taste, I can only appreciate it. Thanks for the interview, total respect! Cheers.

    Tom G. Is a true legend. I was lucky enough to get to see Celtic Frost on the Into The Pandemonium tour with Anthrax and Exodus in 1987 I believe in Milwaukee, WI. Great show I remember buying a Morbid Tales button for my Jean jacket because I couldn't afford a tour shirt. Good times!

      Nice! Would have been cool to see a gig from those days. Alas, I was too young in 1987 to do that.

    Great interview man!! I unexpectedly got to meet Tom before a Triptykon show in Chicago, IL back in Oct 2010. After getting Tom to sign my Triptykon 'Shatter' cd, I got to tell him that the song 'Winter' from the awesome Celtic Frost 'Monothiest' album was my favorite classical music piece...Tom shakes my hand, leans towards me, and said "Thank you very much" with such a deep sincerity and appreciation (will never forget it). I am a huge Triptykon fan and I also got to see Celtic Frost twice in 2007 in Chicago (one show as headliners and the other opening for Type O Negative). -Devon

      Thank you. This is one of my personal favorites, too. The same mic setup has been used numerous times during my interviews, but sometimes the surrounding is too noisy. All these Inferno 2022 interviews (8 in total) were done in the same place where there was no background noise at all).
