- LaCroix is an electric skateboard company that makes very high end boards. But, before the Nazarre, Lonestart and Supersport, there was the Prototipo. It was the first product the ever put out as a company, and many eskate riders hold this board in high regard. In this video, we revive a custom build that wasn't functioning properly.

Such an immaculate battery build. Your attention to detail and safety is really impressive!
Great video - entertaining and educational. I actually prefer this to one wheel content and can't wait for more like it!
Another well delivered video Mario!!
finally some esk8 content
"I dont have a Onewheel for you today, but I do have something pretty special...
a FOURwheel..." 👀😯
Wow that's a nice professional looking battery build. It shows you put a lot of time and care into that. 👍👍🥇
Yeah really awesome, FOUR tires that will need replacing. Usually belts as well.
@@nyccollin Most commonly used tires last about 500-800 miles, depending on terrain and riding style. Since they're tubed tires, wearing them down to the threads doesn't cause air loss. Usually the rear tires wear faster, and I've more often rotated the front tires to the back, and just replaced 2. Also, since the wheels tend to just come off with a single nut, and the hubs come apart easily, a tire change for all 4 wheels takes about 20 minutes. And a tire can cost about $10-15 a piece. Belts last about 1,000-2,000 miles if you have them tensioned properly. If you're trying to make the argument that an eskate needs more maintenance than a Onewheel, I don't think that's solid ground to stand on. Even less so if you take the cost of ownership over the life of the board. I ride Onewheels more, but I don't think it's useful to ignore the costs of owning a Onewheel.
@@nyccollin Four wheels is faster, stable and way more fun than onewheel tho. Onewheel isn't a good purchase lol.
@@SRNAR8 right? Onewheel starts at 1200 or whatever and everything they use is proprietary so if you try and fix a battery you brick it. You can buy an Eskate for 500 all day long and do whatever you want with it.
Great rebuild, great footage at the end.
Great video, one of the best i have seen ever! Great work!
This channel is incredible. So much knowledge! Thank You!
dude the production value is insane O.O keep it up! see you on the forum
love the new bgm
Awesome rebuild!
Man these paths you have at your disposal make me jealous! Looks so fun.
beautiful work
Well done!
Sweet work bench setup! Nice and tidy!👌🏻👌🏻
Thank you! I try.
I’m so excited to dive into this field. I taught myself to be an arborist on CZcams I can learn to rebuild and skateboard..!
It’s alive it’s alive!!!! Love this one!!!
Thank you sir.
This board is so cool 😎 i have never owned an electric skateboard, but this is just not what i thought they were. This board is super cool and so professional and quality. Pretty blown away! 😳 😊 Thank you for sharing all the tech bits, really enjoyable to watch.
The scenery is very beautiful, I’d love to ride there, surrounded by green grass and feeling the breeze. I damn to love it!
Sweet as. Cheers brother 🍺
Mario your skills are amazing and your a awesome dude 🤙
Thanks Jimmy!
I’m in Long Beach. Let’s ride man 🤙🏻
Can't wait for more onewheel content!
Nice work ! I would have siliconed the packs for more vibration relief but that said you knocked it out of the park ! When my Nazare breaks down I'm coming to you for repair. I too like that Jones beach path, I've been doing inline skating there with my wife but beware when night falls the mosquitoes are militarized vicious . Let's ride brother !
Thank you! I've used silicone on the cells before, but not only did it take forever to cure, but I've found that the bond to the cell wraps (at least on Samsungs and Molicels) gets weak and lets go after a week or so. This black hot melt is pretty ridiculous, and seems to hold stronger for longer, which I'm hoping, takes some stress off the welds in terms on structure. Anyway, I'd love to ride! I'm actually abandoning my Hummie deck build, and doing an old school Prototipo build for myself.
If you make more external battery chargers, I would love to pick one up. Missed the last batch 🥺. No problem with the diversity of content!! Great video! 👍
If I can source some more 50E cells, then sure. I'll do another one.
@@TheBoardGarage that would be fantastic, everything electronic is so much harder to come by. Crossing my fingers that we will get back to some normalcy soon.
Hell Yea🙌🙏👏
My buddy had one of these.
hi mario nice work amazing.have you seen the new lacroix the barrell? Thinking about that for my next board.using an evolve gtr which i love. Thanks for any info. I thought I recognized John Beach Meadowbrook Parkway. My old fishing spot.😎
I've already consumed all of your One wheel content, I Love the channel Mario, If you ever want to experience some cool spots on Long island, hit me up, I live right by Hempstead lake 😊👊.
Sure, feel free to reach out to me on IG.
@@TheBoardGarage Awesome, will do!
Sweet build! How’d you get those drone shots? Nice tree-dodging at the end :)
Those were done on the Skydio 2.
Wow nice work that looks awesome. I just bought a used Nazare a week ago. I’m pretty sure mine has the focbox as well. Do you know any current app that will connect to the focbox? I mainly just want to be able to see how much range i have when I’m out riding. I tried Stormcore but it says the firmware is out of date on the unity.
If it’s a FOCBOX Unity, you should be able to use VESC tool on either iOS or Android.
Mario you already got me into floatwheel... DONT DO THIS TO MY WALLET :D
Just you wait.
Hi, where can I buy the griptape from the board?
I'm still laughing! "biff wham bam.. river jam jam" Bwahahahaha! Great video! 👍x2
Wooo! Another option is "biff bam wham, green eggs and ham". I'll give that a try next time.
Great video and really nice pack! I have been thinking about picking up a kweld with a car battery for myself too. What current rating does your car battery have? How good is it for welding 0.2mm nickel?
My battery is a DieHard Silver, only has a CCA of 575, but the KWeld calibration showed it did 1400 amps or so. It does 0.2mm nickel very easily, about 50-57 joules, depending on the sharpness of the electrode tips. 0.3mm nickel takes like 90 joules or so. I haven't done that in a while, and actually mostly use 0.15mm nickel now, since they're usually just for parallel connections.
@@TheBoardGarage Thanks! Good to know that a single battery advertised around 600A will be sufficient. I read on reddit that someone recommended 2x in parallel but apparently that suggestion was just based off the CCA without any real world data to back it up!
CCA is rated at freezing temperatures. At room temperature, the output is much higher.
I’m curious how well the factory xr battery is. Could additional range and power be achieved with better equipment?
The factory Onewheel XR battery is built pretty decently. You can tell when you look inside that the there's a balance of safety and efficiency. Meaning, they use just enough to cover the current draw, and also do a good job of making the pack about as safe as a production e-bike battery would be.
More range is had by either shoving in more cells and sacrificing safety (a lot of mods do this), or losing weight (I'm always trying to do this), or riding way slower.
Nice one man - you know your stuff - have you looked at Nazare’s at all - I have an older 12s6p 20700B Focbox - wonder what she is like inside (not openerd her up yet) and wether a bigger pack is possible.
I haven't opened one up yet, but I do love the look of the Nazarre. I'm sure the inside is similar to the other current gen LaCroix boards. If it does have a 20700 based battery, then it can likely fit 21700 cells. It may not be worth it to replace it though, unless the original pack is really worn out and dragging you down. If it is, it should be easy to replace it with a Molicel P42a build.
I just bought that board a week ago and I love it. Do you know any current app that will connect to the focbox? I mainly just want to view my battery charge.
Great stuff & knowledge! Do you work on other peoples boards? I have a Prototipo since 2018 & thinking I may want to see about a new battery system.
I do, I run an eskate repair shop, and have done 9 Prototipo jobs so far. Feel free to reach out at info@mariocontino.com
Thank you for watching!
@@TheBoardGarage What state are you in?
New York.
@@TheBoardGarage you should contact LaCroix, they're in need & looking for qualified people to service their boards. I know because I had an issue with mine & I know they're looking for people
@@benriding8678 Interesting. 🤔 I appreciate the info, I'll have a chat with them. Cheers sir. And feel free to reach out. I've got another couple of Prototipo videos coming this summer. 🙏
Those are cool looking and all, but when it comes time to stop quickly or turn around in a small space, they definitely fall short. Also, you have 4 tires to replace. Onewheel beats it in pretty much every category.
Oddly enough... I'm making a video on this exact topic. The long and short of it, is that I don't accept the premise. It's based on assumptions that aren't a given, and that I have disagreements with as well.
Will there be any EUC contents in the future?
Maybe... 👀
In your drone shot how fast are you riding?
Between 20-30mph usually. I slow down on bridges and near others, usually to about 10-13mph.
I missed my prototipo a lot after selling it, until I got the new Propel…
What is the best way to get in contact about getting this done to my prototipo?
Email is best: info@theboardgarage.com
What griptape is that? Looks sweet
It's not griptape, but actually glass frit that's epoxied onto the surface of the deck. Very grippy, and permanananent.
Cool video! Can you change my Prototipo's battery too?
Sure, you can reach out on my Instagram and we can talk about that.
Hey do you do battery rebuilds as a business? Lacroix just went out of business I think my battery has deteriorated.
What's the cost of doing something like that?
The battery? Something like $720-750 for a 12s5p.
@@TheBoardGarage sorry yes I meant the battery.
Was only curious because I know I want my Kaly 2.0 and evolve GTR eventually upgraded.
The 2.0 is an interesting case...it really depends on how old it is when it comes to upgrading it. Kalys have a tendency to be pretty rough in the early point and then get more sensible as the board is out for a while. I recently saw a damaged 2.0 that was essentially impossible to fix due to a different sized enclosure (which I believe is not made anymore) and some oddness with how the battery was made.
The GTR is essentially non-upgradable. It's designed in such a way that everything is sealed in a component housing and everything is proprietary. It doesn't have an enclosure in a traditional sense. Trying to upgrade an Evolve GTR is a waste of time and resources. Unless it's a Carbon GTR, at which point you'd have to gut it entirely and figure out how to build into the shell.
Your info is HUGELY interesting, and you obviously know what you're talking about. Even the pace of the video is good.
BUT
The music is way too loud in relation to the voice.
It drove me crazy and I simply couldn't watch until the end.
