Among the colonial empires of the past, the Dutch one is in many ways unlike the others. The Netherlands did not seek to expand its colonies, usually sticking to coastal areas. Looking at the modern map of the world, you can see many toponyms left over from the Dutch colonial past.

Wait, the Portuguese were too weak to the EIC?
The difference of thecnologie between each other back then, where so huge, that even with much less manpower and navy numbers in the end of cen.XVI the Portuguese literally smashed the Dutch piracy.
No wonder why the natives where much more close to the Portuguese then and now. :')
