History Of The Danish Colonies

  • Denmark is a rather small country in Europe, known for its vikings. It may surprise you that the country had an empire during the viking age. However, this was not the only ‘empire’ Denmark had. Throughout its history it has had colonies and territories in England, Greenland, Faroe Islands, Norway, Sweden, Estonia, India, The Gold Coast and The West Indies.
    Hope you enjoy!

    Great video, but there were some mistakes on the English words that come from Norwegian/Danish(both groups raided English and they were all seen as "Danes" back then by the English). Norwegian and English along with the other Germanic languages are related so there are similar words in both languages, but that doesn't means English borrowed them. It's only words that weren't in early Old English, but were in Old Norse and late Old English after the Danelaw that are called Old Norse loanwords.
    "I" comes from Old English "Ic" which in Northern/East Midlands English was pronounced "eek" at first, but then the k started to be pronounced like German "ch" and was then dropped.
    The "I" in Norwegian is fairly recent and the English pronunciation goes back to Middle English 800 or more years ago.
    "Have" comes from Old English "Hebban"
    "Sick" comes from Old English "Sēoc". It's the English word "ill" that comes from Old Norse.
    The English words that come from Old Norse are "they", "egg", "sky", "wrong", "wing" and many other words. They also are part of the reason English grammar became simplified as they never formally learned English so they simplified a lot of the grammar and the English speakers that lived around and intermarried Northmen and the kids brought in mixed homes had their own speech influenced by that (there was also a vowel shift that affected many English that also made grammar simpler)
    And also, the main reason so many slaves wasn't the distance, specifically how bad conditions were on those ships. If the ships followed normal protocol and weren't so overcrowded and unkempt, a lot less would have died, but because they didn't care about treating the Africans on the ships well, disease was able to spread very easily which meant many died.

    the words he chose in 5:32 aren't from norwegian. those are from native english words from middle english and old english straight from proto-germanic. they are just cognates which is why they sound similiar to the norwegian words, meaning they have common origins back to proto-germanic.

    • @sfjuhispst8144
      @sfjuhispst8144 Před rokem +1

      I think it just isn't relevant enough to get that sort of an insight. As a part of the swedish kingdom, Finland swung in and out of the Kalmar union ever so often. The danish rule never had enough time to really set in. In comparison though, our history books talk a lot about swedens position as a European great power (Ruotsin suurvalta-aika, jos kuulostaa tutulta.)

    • @TheDaneOfficial
      @TheDaneOfficial Před 7 měsíci +1

      Sweden was a european power for like 40 - 50 years and then it declined and declined and declined until sweden was just some scandinavian kingdom. Swedish imperialism only lasted for like 90 years or so and then it collapsed. Where as the Danish empire lasted for easily more than 600 years if not even more. With colonies in the baltic, East Indies, India, ofc Greenland and the Faroe islands which are still part of the Danish Realm eveb to this day which kind of means that Denmark still has a colonial Empire when you think about it.@@sfjuhispst8144

    The reason for the selling of the colonies were twofold
    One was a lack of use after the Napoleonic war, as you said, due to the sudden lack of naval power to project to faraway places.
    This was not the main reason however, but rather the will to industrialize (or rather, revolutionize) the agricultural industries.
    Denmark, opposite the rest of the Nordics, is full of farmland, and very little natural resources (other than food). After the Napoleonic war, where Denmark could no longer project enough naval power to its colonies to sustain a decent trade of more "exotic" goods if you will, it started relying heavily on agricultural exports (especially to Britain). To do this, the state started subsidizing the agricultural products, especially dairy and pork meat. By the early 20th century, Denmark was the richest country in the Nordic region and relied almost exclusively on agricultural export.
    Add some financial issues here and there, and you get the picture of why Denmark sold the remaining colonies in the later 19th and early 20th centuries.

    In my opinion it’s time to let Estonia be a nice small Nordic country. Estonia very deserves to be a Nordic country, because Estonia has done a lot of work, we have many smart people, we are good at digital things, we have northern lights and we are very similar to Finland and other Nordic countries like: Sweden, Norway, Denmark, Iceland and Greenland. We are not similar to Latvia and Lithuania and the other Eastern Europe countries. It’s time to stop calling Estonia Eastern Europe country and Baltic country and forget all this terrible, rude and mean Soviet times. Let’s just stop this Eastern Europe and Soviet stigma thing and let Estonia turn the new page and let them be a normal small Nordic country next to Sweden and Finland!!! Estonians call themselves the Nordic country and many other people and tourists had also said that Estonia should be a Nordic country, because Estonian people are Finnic people not Balts and we are more similar to Scandinavia. Yes many people had agreed with that Estonia must belong to the Nordic group and seperate from Latvia and Lithuania. They don’t even need these countries, because Estonians communicate more with Finns and other Scandinavian countries. Estonia will be a very good partner for the other Nordic countries. We will do a very great work and we will be very strong!!! ☺️🙏

One that really irked me was the language "borrowings": while English did take many nordic loanwords, your examples are completely false. the verb "have" is most definitely not nordic but the original west germanic, its more related to German haben, or Low German haven, than it is to any Nordic equivalent, (same with English "I").

    ehm you are forgetting slesvig holstein? and why is skåne not part of denmark? it was litterally birthplace of many of our royalty and it along with sjælland is litterally the place where danish culture and kingdom started.
    Also where is the danish controlled norther poland and north east germany?
    And also wow this is video is so biased its almost hurtful :D Not to mention that most of the accepted history of the fall of the kalmar union we use today was written during swedens peak of power much later. This obviously makes it so that denmark stands out as the villain and sweden did nothing wrong :P Lets not talk about why there were soldiers in sweden at all right? lets forget about the murder of so many danes. Lets forget the fact that the swedes attacked skåne multiple times during the union. You can find information about this in the danish royal library but sweden unfortunately got to decide what was truth after the kalmar union fell.
    Also lets not forget that sweden wanted the danes to protect them from german expansion but when the danes were fighting the germans (like they were asked to) the swedes fucked off and started attacking skåne and killed many danes.
    or the fact that in todays history you will see the norwegians being against the danish king during kalmar union. Knut alvsson forexample is remembered as being in opposition to the danish king and asking for swedes to "help them" despite that same Knut Alvsson having written a letter to the danish king about swedish trying to grab control of norwegian power during that same period and asking for the danes to take a stance. Again this letter is currently at the danish royal archive but history seems to have agreed with the agenda of the swedes "protecting the little norwegians" Which obviously ended with sweden taking norway and becoming a huge powerhouse who could decide what real history was.
    I mean theres also no mention of the swedish nobles threatening the danish council of state to hide the swedish raids from the king as well as working against the king behind his back.
    Lets not forget that the winner writes history and sweden definately ended up writing scandinavian history after the fall of the kalmar union.
    I doubt this channel looked into why the danish soldiers despite being at war in the south had to be split and stay in sweden. Or why so many norwegians mass migrated during the kalmar union out of the lands bordering sweden. When i was in university we had a historical debate with a norwegian university about the details of the kalmar unions historical events. And even in norway they had never heard of most of these things despite denmark having litteral letters and personal accounts archived from the political leaders of norway of the time.
    Sweden has a history of removing anythign that made them look bad and selling almost fairytale straight histories of their country. They even tried to remove the historical accounts of swedish rule mass murdering and deleting danish culture in skåne so the danes could never claim it back. They succeeded with some but at that point it was harder to control knowledge due to a rise in literacy in the common folk.
    Sweden was really good at controling information and changing history.

      @@Globeraphy It's a matter of population.
      Scandinavian as a whole had a way lower population then either of those two societies.
      Simply because our climate isn't condusive towards a large scale civilization.
      Mind you that's something we only really realized when the Swedes started doing statistics and count people.
      During the height of the Swedish Empire it was believed to have a population on par with England or France.
      Then they counted people and found out that no, Sweden is not even *close* to matching their population...
      People of the viking age wouldn't have been able to necessary *know* that.
      But these days we definitely know that our population has never been large.
      And as a result neither where our power, although there's been moments like the north sea empire where we've had a large influence relatively speaking.

    12:48 denmark never own Sweden . Kalmar union was only a personal trade federation, made to combat the hansiatic league. Sweden were still a self governing state in the union that is Why it was called a union becouse they were only United by a royal who did not have much power in Sweden, That is like saying that Sweden own Norway during their union in 1814, When in fact they were both still self governing sure Sweden was the dominant country in the union but that does not justify saying that they own them.

    • @Globeraphy
      @Globeraphy  Před rokem +5

      I would consider Sweden to be owned by Denmark. If a dominant country (like Denmark, which pushed the equality in the Danes favour) comes in a union with another country, I would consider that dominant country to own the country it is a union with. As an example, the UK and Hannover were in a personal union in the 1700s. Since the UK is dominant, I would consider it owning Hannover. I feel it's the same with Sweden-Norway.
      Also, this video was an oversimplification. People understood that I ment something along the lines of "Never would Denmark have power in Sweden again". Leave some room for interpretation, like come on.

      @@Globeraphy I find it rather fascinating that you say ”I would consider Sweden to be owned by Denmark” and even more so When you compare them to england, Hannover which are 2 wastly different unions and to suggest that Denmark during the union was such a dominant power that they owned the entierty of Sweden is quiet absurd. To leav something upp to interperataion is quite foolish. well atleast in this instant, mainly becouse this shifts the entier perception of the power dynamic in the union for the viewer. I still find it weird how people decide for themselves that a union ,which is a cooperative effort from all parties to unite together is considerd one owning the other.

    • @Globeraphy
      @Globeraphy  Před rokem +3

      "Sweden became fully independent, no union
      and stuff included in 1523. Never would Denmark own Sweden again." Does it really change the perception? It's quite obvious what I mean by "owning Sweden". Denmark had power over Sweden in a personal union. Denmark would never have power over Sweden again. It doesn't change the power dynamic because the fact that Denmark had power over Sweden is fucking true.
      Directly quoting Wikipedia: "Diverging interests (especially the Swedish nobility's dissatisfaction with the dominant role played by Denmark and Holstein) gave rise to a conflict that hampered the union in several intervals starting in the 1430s."
      They had dominant power. That's a fact. But, to be fair, it's not as dominant as the UK and Hannover.
      Also, kinda weird to rebell over a country if the country you're rebelling against doesn't have power over you.

    • @skurt9109
      @skurt9109 Před rokem +1

      @@Globeraphy Yes it most definitely does. Saying that a country owned another and saying one had power in the country, is a huge difference. Yes you are right in saying that Denmark having power in Sweden is true 100% but to say Denmark own them is not.
      Yes wiki is right in that, but that does still not justify saying the danish owned Sweden. And again i have never said Denmark did not have power over Sweden, Sweden did not want to rebel in the end while trying to leave the union, they tried to succeed peacefully, but the danish ofcourse intervined.
      I never denied the fact that denmark had power over Sweden. I only denier over you claiming that that denmark owned the entirety of sweden. So i dont understand why you bring upp all these points proving denmkar had influence/power in Sweden when i laready agreed whit that in the beggining

      @@skurt9109 Denmark, did in fact, own Sweden.
      You're reading history as if it is 19th century. Nation states did not exist. The "country" only exists because it is tied to a kingdom, meaning actual ownership of a monarch. Since the Kalmar monarch was monarch of Denmark first and based its ties on the Danish noble councils electing the monarch, as well as having its base in Copenhagen (and Sweden and Swedish peasants thus paying tax thereto) it is clear that Sweden, as a geographical area, was fully incorporated and owned by the Danish monarchy. This is per definition of medieval history, meaning that Sweden was owned by Denmark. Sweden was technically, legally, a kingdom, but fully under the DANISH Crown, in matters of legislation, economics and foreign policy. Nations did not exist in this time of history, and only exist as a country or state per the ownership of one (or in rare cases multiple) individual(s) - in this case, the Danish monarch.
      In short: In a medieval lense, Sweden was fully owned by the Danish crown, which is the medieval definition of one part owning another.
