Voulismeno Aloni is mysterious geological formation located 17 km west of Heraklion. It’s easily accessible as it’s next to the old national road between Heraklion and Rethymno. Voulismeno Aloni is a mysterious place and there are several theories and myths about its origin, however it was most likely created by the collapse of a cave.
Keri is about 300 m high hill located 13 km west of Heraklion. Its shape looks like table mountain. At the top of the hill is pine tree forest called Keri as well. The hill is bordered by steep walls of Almyros Gorge on its north side. At the east edge just above the steep rocky slope, there are popular view points that offer view of Heraklion city but also wider area like villages in neighbourhood, Giouchtas mountain, Heraklion bay and Dia island. On the west of Keri hill is Stroumboula mountain that has very specific shape like a volcano if observed from east and the church of Timios Stavros is on its peak. You can get by car even to the east edge of Keri, but the part of the road that is on the hill is dirt road with stones. If you drive to Keri from Heraklion, then you pass by Voulismeno Aloni which you can notice by your right hand in sharp road curve. On your left hand then is small parking for visitors of Voulismeno Aloni. Keri is just behind Voulismeno Aloni and turn from the main road to the dirt road of Keri hill is 700 m north of the parking by Voulismeno Aloni. Keri hill with its forest is very nice place for walking in nature and enjoying panoramic views.
