Lots of memories from the Midgett. In the early 80's running rust was a no no!

While patrolling the N. Pacific on the Midgett, after boarding crew completed inspection of a HUGE Russian canning vessel I resumed SONAR watch and immediately received two massive returns. One - the canning vessel and the other - submarine. Chased it for a few minutes (Diesel power) then lost it. Imagine the chaos during these few minutes. Report was that it was not a US or US ally sub. Then I was an ST3. Anybody out there remember this?

@@lukeshaver1149 Hi Luke - Are you in the USCG? This was back when WHEC cutters had sonar. During an Alaska patrol, mostly for fishery busts we came across this huge Russian vessel. Close to the size of a tanker. The boarding party determined that the over fished their limit substantially. Eventually we seized the vessel and escorted it to Kodiak. This made New York Times news. Immediately after boarding party was secure it was announced to resume watch. I returned to sonar and went active. I received a very loud return and thought nothing of it...its the canning vessel. Then shortly after I heard another off out starboard bow. So i ran outside and saw nothing. Then my heart began to race!! Ran back into sonar and announced to the bridge "Sonar contact bearing 045, range... right here. classified possub" Shortly after that I adjusted settings on sonar and a loud buzz sound came in. They started up their props and made a lot of cavitation noise. I ordered bridge "contact is increasing range and decreasing bearing.......Full speed ahead left full rudder." After a few zigs and zags and my instructing bridge to change course a few times, the sub dove deeper to evade sonar detection. Soon after we conducted a search pattern. Meanwhile radio comms received information that there is no US or US ally subs in the area. Cold war situation. A few months ago [35+ years later] I ran into a guy with a Midget hat and he remembered this event, he was on the same patrol as a machinist. I like the movie "Hunt for Red October"
