- Sep.10 -- Reed Hastings, founder and co-chief executive officer of Netflix Inc., talks about how the company was almost sold to Blockbuster, why they're not interested in news and sports, the importance of working together in an office, and why all Netflix employees get unlimited vacation time. He appears on the latest episode of "The David Rubenstein Show: Peer-to-Peer Conversations." The interview was recorded on Aug. 4.

18:33 My boy didn't even try to edit that out neither oh my lawd
Can we just acknowledge that He had the same impact as Steve Jobs in bringing existing market players in to their heels and disrupting the whole industry. Netflix helped decrease subscribers of cable companies, democratized the distribution side of content produced, allowed existing content owners to further provide revenue on their content, potentially slowly killing the movie industry.
I mean aside from smartphone, Netflix really bought the best in everyone, pay a minimum amount and unlimited access to all content at hd quality at ever changing new releases, awesome app interface and no ads!!!
19:56 AND 18:33 bro's hard R's flying real smooth off his tongue 😩
Beginning to like Reed more and more. He is a crazy intelligent, wise business man.
If he was wise, he would be more involved with what's on Netflix not just hanging out. Reed Hastings lack of care about what's on Netflix especially the movies "Cuties" will be the downfall of Netflix.
He studied Maths
AMAZING that Blockbuster could have owned Netflix AND had these guys running it but turned them down!!! WOW!!!
One of the humblest person ever! 💯
Was waiting for this interview!!!!!!
Why?
who admits that previous intro of shows are better the new one? Anyway the extra-ordinary quality conversation as usual. Thanks David for orchestrating insightful conversation.
Great interview, like always. Mr Hastings looks very humble, should serve as a role model for younger generation.
What a breath of fresh air.
I'm Glad Blockbuster didn't buy Netflix. Because I don't think they would be where they are today if, an antiquated, company like Blockbuster bought them.
He seems humble. So inspiring
He Studied Maths: you cant be a Mathematician and an egomaniac at the same time. Mathematicians are the most humble and imaginative people ever.
This guy is so modest it looks like his home office is the guest bedroom, big reminder of what success actually looks like
Stay Humble™️
The cringiest (thank you, Britain) part of all this is that apparently it's his son's room and it's... slightly larger than a cleaning supplies closet?
Genuinely confused as to what message this is supposed to send, exactly. Can his PR people please explain?
...man, I can just tell I'll be up all night again thinking about this stuff 😆
Great Interview...Always love Reed for what he has Accomplished at Netflix to be what it is now....Reed says when he turns 70 he would conduct his own interviews like David doing now.....I hope he does those on Netflix instead of youtube.......it would be awesome..
Fortress of books. Awesome Mr. Rubeinstein.
Great interview. Thank you.
Thanks David👍🏻
Reed appears to be a very humble leader
You can get a feel from David’s interviewees which capitalist is a crook and which one is a gentleman. Reed falls amongst the latter.
I am committed to self-development and thriving.
Please make David scientific interviews
I like his management style
Enjoy watching this show.
18:35...Damn David
Woah
@@israelafangideh1454uh oh - another one bites the dust.
I'm glad I wasn't the only one that caught that lmao
Does Reed Hastings still live in a college doom?
Wondering the same thing 😂😂
It’s his son’s room. He mentioned it somewhere. It’s convenient to use for the filming
Was about to ask the same thing 😂
@@raphaelfoo6610 what's wrong with using any other room? Was he renovating?
Or is this a subliminal way of managing work/life balance expectations 😅
makes sense you shouldn't strictly track hrs/week as some are much more productive than others in lesser time frames
Volume needs to be high .
Finally!!
very interesting thinker
pls,add the subtitles!
This is very intersting. @david Rubnstien , this can be a conspiracy. Marc Randolph has written a book few years ago on how Netlfix was born. Reed was just consulted and he fundered , but he orgianl idea and the real 'founder ' according to the sorry is Mark. So this goes back in to the question of who founded it really and who take the credit for that. Can you also interview Marc Randolph?
such inspiring
Unlimited vacation time and one can displease their boss. Lets analyse those two brillant statements in the real world...lol
I may be in minority, but unlimited vacation time sounds like some kind of existential philosophy test I'm bound to fail.
Unlimited dental, on the other hand... 👍
6:35 👌🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨🚨
LOL - those books (presidential biograpies, of course) and the chess game...
Man, Reed.. i am metacognitive guy, i couldn't study worth a jack shit unless i am under hypnosis, which is great contration... or as Jenn calls it, the state of flow.
i have literally tied everything to my bae, bill and melinda are trying to reinvent the wheel here... i would start by making it round and then ordering one, ready made from ebay
Why do teachers ( Starbucks founders) think so creatively outside of classrooms yet many schools are “failing”?
No mention of Cuties? Seriously?

It is a masterclass
There is an invitation to the back transfer of Lady Shack Taek Mee.
I was at BB&N school in Cambridge with the little Reed Hastings ( in the same class )
We used to steal his lunch and hit him in the face really hard with very heavy Latin dictionaries. Kid stuff !
Once we even took a shit on him ( literally ) and he was so pissed, I think that is why he became so successful over time.
Are you proud?
👏👏👏👏👏👏💚💜💚💜
Reed Hastings is a genius Jew

I don't know who this Dave is but why in heaven wouldn't he had asked about Cuties?

why not asking about cuties ?? all these teens
Because its a normal documentary about a topic that should be talked about, like any topic. But people apparently love to talk about pedophilia, kinda weird really.
@@Lplover007 That's because you like children. Which is super weird really.
@@Lplover007 NOT A DOCUMENTARY, use google, it takes 5 seconds. dont know if low iq or lazy
@@Lplover007 it's not a fucking documentary u clueless moron
@@Lplover007 You're are defending Hastings without even knowing what Cuties is? Is NOT a documentary you useful idiot!
Do we really need to see this guy’s bed? Strange
Anyone sitting in front of a bed during these zoom interviews, and is known to be able to afford not to do that, instantly raises suspicion in my eyes.
