This movie came out in 1980....I was 18..saw it as the x rated version....wild...crude...unrated..bold...then I joined the army in 1981 and saw it at Ft.Knox Ky....Summer of 82 during the basic training wkd pass with my friends...the R rated version....and then found the DVD the original unrated version X a few yrs ago here in P.R...a classic...

From what I know from the distributor it’s essentially a whole new movie. Never before seen footage throughout, full performances of the actors, it even features new camera angles!
It’s a new film and I’m wondering why they’re not marketing it more with that in mind. That this isn’t the Caligula people have seen or know of.

Some years ago, I worked on a film with Malcolm McDowell in the cast. After lunch break, McDowell was late coming out of his trailer. Normally punctual, everyone waited patiently. When he finally did, the AD got on his bullhorn and announced "Ladies and gentlemen, Golden Globe nominee and star of the award-winning film "Caligula", Mr. Malcom McDowell is now on the set!" McDowell's face immediately went red. Unfortunately, I could not actually make out any of his curses over the applause except for "... son of a bitch...". Personally, as terrible as the film actually is, McDowell's performance is absolutely fantastic. I hope this cut can begin to do it some of the justice it deserves.

@@JoesephTechnicolor I'm sorry if you don't believe it is true. The film was Bobby Jones: Stroke of Genius, which was released 20 years ago this year. The specific shooting location was the second day on the Bobby Jones golf course in Atlanta, where I lived at the time. McDowell played a famous Atlanta newspaper journalist. I played a number of different extra roles in the film, but was specifically a news photographer in that one. If I recall correctly, that setup only lasted about 30 minutes due to the threat of thunderstorms. Jim Caveziel, who played Jones, was trying to get some shots right (they were later simply made with CGI), and he quickly threw down his metal club at the first sight of lightening, and we headed indoors for a press conference scene. During the setup, the soft-spoken Caveziel, whose previous film was the popular Passion of the Christ, entertained us with stories of his unpleasant encounter with lightning while playing Jesus on the cross in that picture, hence him not wanting to tempt fate on an open golf course holding a metal stick. McDowell, though seemingly pleasant other than his fury at the aforementioned AD remark, did not spend any time on the set unnecessarily, generally choosing to avoid the oppressive Georgia humidity whenever possible. Indeed, I never saw him without an umbrella to avoid the sun unless the camera was actually rolling. I suspect that not a lot people on the set had actually seen Caligula, but enough people laughed out loud to suggest awareness, at least, of its infamy.

The production and release of this movie has long fascinated me. To be able to see this movie go from controversial pornography to a film shown at Cannes, is quite the redemption story. Hoping its playing near me.

I saw it when it came out. Watching the trailer now it hit me that it was very Fellini inspired.
I believe that both films shared the same production designer.
He never liked the name Caligula "Bootkins", a nickname given to him by soldiers under his father's command.

Saw it in New Haven CT in 1980, presumably the 156-min version. I recall reading the novelization, which was of Vidal's original screenplay, NOT the finished movie--Vidal's screenplay was VERY different though after 44 years I don't recall HOW it was different 😉 Supposedly this 178-min Ultimate Cut is meant to come closer to Vidal's version. I'm not sure if I'm up for seeing it in the theater again, even after those 44 years but when it comes out on DVD, I'll certainly watch it then.
Looks like I'll have to buy yet another copy of this movie. (I have 4 already, including the original VHS)

Saw the original in theatre & the scene where Caligula "blessed" the marriage made a bunch of big burly biker type dudes leave. This version looks intriguing.

I watched that film 1980 in a Cinema. Thist time, Helen Mirren was a no name actress. In no commercial spot she was named. Today she is one of Englands greatest Moviestars, this trailer make you believe, she is in al leading role in this Film. But this is not true. The Film is a one time must see, so you can talk about and make your own picture. By the way, I love Helen Mirren!
This is one of my favorites of all time. Just awesome! They don't make them like this anymore, Little Boots. Excited!!!

I look forward to seeing the film Gore Vidal, Tinto Brass, and Malcolm McDowell originally intended before it was wrestled away by Bob Guccione and turned into a softcore porn film.
It was actually hard-core in a couple of shots.
@@ohger1 I have the version that is just nudity (softcore), but MANY years ago, I remember seeing the hardcore version on VHS (one of my friends at the time must have been able to rent it). I believe all the versions are out-of-print and hard to get, but I'm looking forward to this new version.
The hardcore version is still available on dvd and blu-ray from various legitimate media companies around the world. I have two of them. The movie is rather awful but the sets, the weird production and the over acting still fascinates me as a guilty pleasure.
@@craigdorsey8624 I think it truly fits the definition of a "guilty pleasure" as it has the best cast imaginable and was written by a leading author, but I can't make the argument that it's a great or even a good film (in its current form). It might be available in non-U.S. formats around the world, but it is not easy to get here. I bought the DVD version a good while back because I did not remember the film and was curious about it. I hope to eventually see the recut and remastered version.

Now you have my attention. The available ultimate cut on bluray is longer and dont has any porn scenes in it. But lets see how long this 4k release will be. The explicit original one is still a must have.

@@SupertzarMetal nope. There was a theater on 58th or 59th between 2nd and 3rd avenues. They never carded anyone. It did a stint for years in the 80s as a porn theater. Weirdly the last time I walked by the place had become a design store, but they still had the old marquee up above the storefront lol memories

It's one of the only movie trailers I've seen where the director isn't mentioned in the final credits. The restoration guy is, but the original director is not.
Tinto Brass asked for his name to be removed since he had no saying in this cut despite using mostly new scene filmed by him.

Having read a few bios or Little Boots, and The Twelve Caesars, I have to say Penthouse got it pretty close to the bone. As for this version...damn, I thought I had it with the Bluray....but Noooo. This film is so good, when the porn comes along, you don't have time for it. McDowell, Mirren, Gielgud.... they give so much.

@@erniericardo8140 There will be a 4K release in September, this will have the new Ultimate cut on disc 1 in 4K. Disc 2 will have the version with all the hardcore scenes in it. Disc 3 will have the extras, including making of etc, Disc 4 will contain the soundtrack.
I saw it when it was first released and it felt like porn. Very bad porn.
There's a good movie in there somewhere ... is this the one? ... eliminating the dreary, unpleasant porn scenes is a good start, Bringing it. closer to the original Vidal script is another.

While the film is a beautiful mess, I'm intrigued to see this "reconstruction" on the big screen - wonder if they'll cut out most of the "naughty bits" Guccione filmed/inserted into the movie to make it "sexier?" From fisting to decapitations, oh my!

I have to giggle at the hyperbole about how magnificent this movie is.
I saw it when it first came out and it's it's just awful. It was hysterical, people were laughing! Bob Guccione screwed it up by inserting all of the porn.

Saw this movie back in the 80s. The storyline sucked. Even the soundtrack sucked but I did buy on vinyl. Don't think it's on cd yet but if it is give me a yell, thanks ( from 976-CREOLEMAN).
IF the movie is released EXACTLY as it was before with ZERO cuts and edits, I am going to LOVE being next to that more "conservative" couple next to me in theaters to see if they get really excited or if they walk out ! 😆

Is this the TRIPLE X VERSION much more improved of the X-rated version when I was a teenage then when it was so controversial in theaters in 1980. Who is going to sit through this. The homeless?
