DISCLAIMERS ON FORMATS COVERED:
Notice I said POPULAR formats, meaning a format where there is a significant amount of people who compete in it for tournaments and so on and so forth. Now Popular does not mean official even though two of the formats I will be covering were official formats being Japan Nintendo Cup and VGC, but it is an indicator of what a good portion of competitive players thought was “optimal” at the time. Also sometimes the Pokemon Battle Historia doesn't provide enough information to talk about certain Pokemon so I add Smogon analysis to make sense of it. This is pretty rare though.
To the people asking why I don't cover Smogon Singles for Gens 1 and 2: It wouldn't really be a history video if I covered those because online Smogon gen 1 meta to my knowledge wasn't actually played until late 2000s. I wanted to cover tournaments/competitive battling that was actually played during the early years of Pokemon (late 90s).
To the people asking why I cover Smogon at all for singles: To my knowledge, Smogon was the most popular format for Gens 3-5 and held a number of tournaments throughout the years. As for Gen 6, I am not covering Battle Spot Singles because there is more information and explanations about sets being used relative to their own meta on Smogon. In other words, there are few written analyses about Battle Spot Pokemon besides the Top tiers and I would like to avoid theorycrafting because it may have a hint of bias (though I theorycraft if I REALLY couldn't find information on a certain Pokemon). The keyword here is explanations. Though I did find statistics of most Pokemon used and most moves used, there wasn't really any explanations on why. Also the few Pokemon I did find analysis of for Top Tier Battle Spot Singles had very similar move sets to the Smogon OU sets anyway.
For the record, I do not care what rules or formats people play their battles by nor am I saying these formats are the only formats that should be played. The way you play Pokemon is between you and your opponent and I will not fault you for using evasion or whatever, I just like examining popular tournament formats.

There was an episode where Houndoom found Misty's Tokepi and protected him. I think it was called Howl of Houndoom. It was a very sweet episode.
It was called "Houndoom's Special Delivery." You must be confusing it with "Hour of the Houndour."
Togepi*
It was unusual for houndoom.
Usually whenever this Pokémon makes an appearance in an episode he’s being a pissed off bully to other Pokémon.
It was a nice change of pace
@@spencerbowden2979 Also had a Raikou cameo appearance that episode which I think was like the only one in the Johto anime??
Yes
I fell like Houndoom should have Intimidate for it's ability. I mean it's a litteral hellhound, a dog from hell. It's definitely more intimidating than a weirdo that spins on its head (Hitmontop) or pretty much any pokemon with that ability.
Swaping early bird for intimidate would be perfect for it
some rom hacks gave it intimidate :D
Incineroar got it.
Entei as well. I also find it funny that the volcano Pokémon doesn’t get earthquake.
@@ralegade7710 well volcanos don't have a lot to do with earthquakes, it's mostly pressure that makes them overflow
My good friend loved, and i mean LOVED, Houndoom. I remember he would level two of them and take on the elite four with only one or two in his party ( usually way overleveled ) just because he wanted to see it wreck.
Sadly he's no longer with us.
They got us in the first half not gonna lie
im sorry for your loss
I have a question for Helix, WHY!
I’m sorry for ur friend man ❤😢
Big sad. R.I.P
Sorry for your loss. 🙏
I hope Houndoom one day gains a regional variant that instead of having a mega evolving has a normal evolution to a cerberus
It can still evolve into one as it's 3rd evo
Ghost ice or something maybe fire ground or Ghost fire or Ghost ground
@User Name maybe just give it a 530-550 base stat total, that way it won’t be too broken
Yeah. Give it an 2nd evolution and be based on the Cerberus.
@User Name I'd like to point out that Rhydon has 485 in it's Base Stat total and Scyther has a base stat total of 500, both have Evolutions (Two for Scyther) and neither are "Broken" in anyway
I feel like every time you get to the Gen V part, you talk about how fighting types messed it up and we see it getting killed by Terrakion. Geez who doesn't lose to Terrakion?
idk, latis/mewtwo or the like maybe?
Terrakion loses to missing leg day.
Gengar?
Terrakion
Um maybe Machamp?
If the Pokemon world was real Houndoom would definitely be in my team. It's so cool! :D
You mean its hot xD
DerSamalander he probably would bite your face off
Right xD
Maybe not if I train it properly :)
Houndoom is my top number 1 Pokemon in my opinion
Personally wished houndoom got buffed, it’s my favorite Pokémon and mega
i dont think hound should get buffed. they'd have to legit keep certain features like that +100 stat boost on it. it had solar power, and its fire type attacks are INSANE with nasty plot boost in harsh sunlight. its so insane especially with its WALLING defenses for its style i n mega form. (90 in both) it didnt even NEED those. unlike greninja, if it couldnt ohko it wouldnt be immediately dead UNLIKE greninja. you could check its stats, it isnt even defensive. like i said if it was able to be outsped or cant OHKO with setups, its dead. yes it would ahve protean to get STAB and type changes, but just 1 good prediction could end a WHOLE protean sweep in doubles. a tailwind destroys it
Me when I lie
@@bcrbes its doesnt need a buf just more coverage moves
Angelica Cimpoeşu I didn’t say it need a buff tf
+10 Speed would help somewhat.

"A LOT of popular water types, like Starmie or Slowbro for example, had secondary psychic typings"
They are the ONLY two Water/Psychic Pokemon....
Well there is slowking and bruxish
Tapu trainer he was referring to gen 2. Slowking was in gen 2 but was in UU, but Bruxish didn't exist until gen 7. Just clearing that up
Oh well now I feel dumb
don't worry, it happens
I mean 2 is Alot right?...
OK Idk
My lovely Houndoom, always tried to have one in my adventure teams through the years with Umbreon, and used it on Dark-Mono teams as well, which is what I focused on at the time.
This month Crystal hits the 3DS-- and Celebi will actually be in it. So, you guessed it...
How GOOD was Celebi ACTUALLY?
To be clear, back in Gen 2 a Celebi event was planned but only Japan got it. But 3DS Crystal will have Celebi integrated into postgame content.
It was like Mew but with less moves and a Grass-typing
very different from Mew, it's grass/psychic typing & solid stat line gave it a central place in many metagames throughout the franchise's history
I find it kinda sad that the whole Comment sections is only "wishing for a New Mon" instead of praising how well done your Videos are
Daniel Ijust dude, praise's good. If they weren't, there won't be pleas for more videos. Praise is not always visible but it is still there.
It's still sad tho, the content of the video is not discussed. The same goes for pimpnite's videos. People just comment their team suggestions but do not comment on the battles.
Mr. Lasonyer yeah pimpnite is also a very good Example.
Dude, you gotta understand if people didn't like the videos, no one would comment. But, since everyone is excited to get their Pokémon discussed by this great guy there are tonnes of comments asking for Pokémon

Why do you guys want him to analyze obvious Pokemon?
Normally I would go for Muk, but hey, lets try Dugtrio on for size!
You are now in my list of favorites. You are good people.
A Doberman pokemon was a great idea
I'm really sad and happy at the same time! I love Houndoom so much! And glad you did a video.. but I'm sad it is underwhelming :(
How good was Muk ACTUALLY?
Bad until Alolan Muk was made.
Said Fayad
True my Alola Muk is such a good Assault SD Wall it is scary
*Retired* Onion Ninja Muk wasn't relavent until Gen 7 with it's Alola form.
TraumaCenter13 rip
People talking bullshit above me.
Muk was actualy an okay niche choice in both Gen I and II (more in II) tho not very popular. Still not a total joke but something that you probably want to save for Smogon tournaments (where surprise factor and counter teaming are big things) than laddering.
Gen III He was worse. Also his fellow Gen 1 poison-type, Weezing gets better thanks to Levitate and overall better bulk. Still, Sub Punch Muk sound like a thing that you throw into team for lulz.
Gen IV-VI changed nothing. Weezing was still a superior mono-poison and gets few new toys where Muk practicaly did not changed at all.
Gen VII is a rise of Gay Technicolor Slime Puddle of Death. But people said it.
If say Houndoom burns your arm and you get so tired of the pain that you cut your arm off after several years of the pain, will you still feel the pain?
It's possible, sometimes amputees experience phantom pain, where they can still feel their limbs after they've been removed.

OctagonalPrism "Why are we still here? Just to Suffer?"
"Every night,I can't feel my leg"
This poor pokemon is awesome, hope it gets more of a buff in the future.
I used to have a fun time with a monotype gen 4 dark team that often had Houndoom as a lead or revenge killer. I gave it a Washo berry so it could tank water moves which people rarely expected, then use a Nasty Plot boosted HP Grass to take out a water type. Very fun to see my opponents reactions!
I actually do have a childhood love for Houndoom because along with Jolteon, it was my main Pokémon in XD: Gale of Darkness. Its name is Shadou and I still have the save in the hopes of one day being able to get a gen 3 Pokémon game and link cable and being able to transfer it and the rest of my party
How BAD was Flareon actually?
Wot
The answer is VERY.
Gen 1: Would be a decent mixed attacker if it had any speed at all.
Gen 2: And now it's a terrible mixed attacker.
Gen 3: Hey, it's got Flash Fire now! That's a thing?
Gen 4: Well, now it can actually use its STAB! With... Fire Fang.
Gen 5: Please, Nintendo. Please give it Flare Blitz.
Gen 6: It has Flare Blitz now! Let's hope it can get one off before it kills itself from recoil.
naisubadi nice
they could've moved the stats a lot better than what they did for it. like the 110 could've been HP and the 95 could've been its speed. oh well, only in rom hacks will i get to experience that. (Still love Flareon tho)
Do Gligar and Gliscor next
Remove passive damage when using solar power. It's kinda dumb
It's actually a fair exchange, like life orb.
@@MisterSleep1123 then just use a life orb
@@cmdrfrosty3985 life orb houndoom has far less damage output in the sun, and base 95 speed is kind of awful for its intended purpose in this day and age. especially when it comes nowhere close to offsetting that low speed with high bulk or power.
Also, solar power boosts your power by 50%
It's like a choice specs without locking yourself
@@Knubbi32 but does it need the recoil
... I actually use Houndoom as more of a defensive Pokemon. Fire Blast, Super Fang, Will-o-Wisp and Rest. Early Bird lowers the Rest count to just 1 turn, so its capability to force switches with Super Fang and Fire Blast comes in handy for ensuring safe Rests. Chuck Leftovers or a Lum or Aguav Berry on it, and you've got a surprisingly effective Specially Defensive Pokemon.
Hardly a defensive _core_ for your team, but still a fun setup to have.
How good was everyone's favourite telekinetic egg coconut tree thing (Exeggutor) actually?
Some grass type love in here.
Jeroen B vote for a grass type that doesn't have an alolan form, he won't cover any gen 7 meta content until gen 7 is done.
Give grass types sum love they are probably the useless type rn since along with bug they are the most resisted type but bug is good against the powerful psychic type and has U-Turn While grass has nothing but eviolite Ivysaur or bayleef and Choice band grassy slide rillaboom also weakness to poison a common coverage move and weakness to fire with libero cinderace is not good at all
Beedrill, summon forth the murder bee!

This isint halloween
The answer isn’t good misdreaavus was ok in gsc but after that it wasn’t great
It started out pretty good but the Mega was the only buff Houndoom got in years. It's very hard to keep up with the meta this way. 🙁
How GOOD was Exeggutor ACTUALLY?
It was broken in gen 1 and then slowly died as generations went on. Those 7 weaknesses are brutal, almost every Pokémon running around has something to hit him at least for neutral damage
Michele Cozzarin Oh I know. I read the Smogon analysis myself. I read up on every Gen 1 Pokemon. I just want to see more Grass types done
How GOOD was Infernape Actually? Maybe do 2/3 pokemon from later gens together to make up for having less to say about each one.

BoltBase Gaming From better Blaziken in its debut to inferior Blaziken a gen later.
PizzaBagelRoger Then power creep.

I'd love to see Flygon, my personal favorite Pokemon, get analyzed~
Do Typhlosion, Meganium, and Feraligatr before moving on to Generation 3! You should do the generations starters final evolutions before moving on to the next generation of evo. families!
TheNorth15 the problem is that they aren't good, so there isn't really much to talk about
Actually Feraligatr is considered to be one of the most terrifying Sheer Force users in competitive and Typhlosion is a very fast and powerful but predictable Pokemon due to it's extremely strong but limited moveset. Meganium is really the only one considered "weak" and even then there is actually a lot to talk about from the support side of Meganium.
+Rick Harris
Feraligatr is normally in the RU/OU/UU formats. He's considered to be a really dangerous sweeper once succesfully set up due to his access to water-stab/dragon dance/ and life orb-sheer force.
As for Typhlosion, he's a very interesting case, at one time being once considered as one of the most dangerous scarf users in the game before Gen V came and more powerful than Charizard before he got his Mega Evo. In fact to this day, Typhlosion is still seen as one of the best fire-type wallbreakers thanks to his, yes, very powerful and fast stats, able to maintain a RU tier. A 109 SPATK and a 100 SPD is very close to what I'd consider "very fast and powerful". The problem with Typhlosion in the recent years is that his movepool, although very powerful, is just too limited and predictable now.
typlosion is a meme in ru, it got there entirely based on usage if we're talking smogon and also I'm 99% certain that was gen 6; it's nu in 7. also it falls short of the speed tier you're looking for in higher tiers, you usually want 101 or 111 for ou. really not that fast. great speed for ru but faster mons like zygarde-10%, swellow and aerodactyl still revenge it easily enough, and there's some water-type prio running around too
109 spatk isn't too great even in ru: espeon has 110 and gardevoir has 125 plus both can cripple a wall with trick, shaymin only has 100 but seed flare is a consistent 140bp with 40% chance to force a switch on many of its walls due to 2x spdef drop, swellow has 75 but carries specs scrappy boomburst/hurricane/heat wave and has u-turn for momentum. it's carried by eruption, which does jack for damage below maybe 65% hp... in a rocks filled meta. on the physical side of things, machamp has been seeing a rise, bewear and pangoro are solid as always, feraligatr and snorlax still exist although they're moreso setup sweepers than wallbreakers. and also mega abomasnow is the go-to wallbreaker rn since not much bar bronzong and escavalier can stop it
most variants of snorlax eat it for breakfast if eruption isn't good to go. milotic is a premier water-type wall in ru. gigalith in particular gives it trouble since sand stream buffs its spdef, stone edge/rock slide/eq all ko, and it sets rocks. dragalge can use toxic spikes on it and threatens with adaptability draco meteor, cresselia even outright sets up on it: *252 SpA Choice Specs Typhlosion Eruption (150 BP) vs. 252 HP / 148+ SpD Cresselia: 210-247 (47.2 - 55.6%) -- 19.9% chance to 2HKO after Leftovers recovery* doesn't 2hko after the turn 1 calm mind and then cress just heals
also its typing and bulk leaves it threatened by many mons it threatens, so gl switching in ever
maybe it's scary in nu, idk, but scary in nu is a nice meme at best
tl;dr typhlosion is unranked in tiers higher than nu for good reason
Meganium is straight up garbage, typhlosion is a mono fire with poor movepool ans camerupt does he's one job better, spamming eruption. Feraligatr is the only decent one and only after gen 5 when he got Sheer force, before that there are way better waterfall users in the game aka crawdaunt or gyarados
How good was Milotic actually?
Emin Gani a pain to get in gen 3 since feebas is stupid hard to find

How good was clefable actually?
When will thou do Ninetales???
Gen 1 - Fire Spin shenaningans, but even this is better done by Charizard, Moltres and even f00king Rapidash.
Gen 2-4 - lol
Gen 5 - A centerpiece of Sun-based teams. Not strong pokemon but strong ability.
Gen 6 - Weather abilities nerf. Still best option for Sun-based teams but Sun-based teams are rare and meh.
Gen 7 - Normal Ninetales got outclassed by A FUCKING TORKOAL as weather starter. Alolan Ninetales is a centerpiece of hail-based teams thanks to being the only fully reliable Aurora Veil user.
VGC... ehhh... probably was used somewhere before Torkoal gets Drough, but was not super popular. In gen 7 A-Ninetales is again, a centerpiece of Aurora Veil shenaningans.
tl;dr - Ninetales sucks and was good only thanks to its ability.

"How good was garbage Actually?" There. Fixed it for you.
Unown only gets Hidden Power and has bad stats. Gtfo.
Some may prefer Alakazam as their Psychic-type of choice, probably thanks to its magnificent moustache, or perhaps the slow and ugly Reuniclus. However, Unown does the job of a Psychic-type just as well this generation as always. To be blunt, it is unknown why one would choose not to use Unown. Unchanged from DPP, it deals with most of the OU threats that would otherwise roam free-unless it gets hit first, of course.

Houndoom’s mega evolution certainly fits the theme perfectly for Houndoom, which is a mix of a Doberman and the grim reaper. But do agree the spooky, fire breathing dog does kind of fall short in picking a Pokémon with a mega evolution form.

Gen I - Raaarely used. Not good, but being a Water-type that is not tanked by special walls like Alakazam or Chansey and can fuckem up on switch give it a niche to sometimes be considered a surprise pick.
Gen II-III - What's that?
Gen IV - Phys/Spec split gave Kingler a decent buff, but it's too slow and frail on special side.
Gen V-VII - What's that?
If anything. It’s got better (still not viable though) in USUM after finally having a STAB water move that’s boosted by Sheer Force after being able to learn Liquidation as a tutor move. (Believe it or not, it can’t learn Waterfall and had been stuck with no STAB boosted Sheer Force since gen 5.)
Oh, yeah. That's also a thing.
Basicaly despite having a VEEERRRY niche use in Gen 1 and few surprise buffs here and there, Kingler was rather weak and outclassed mon thanks to its mediocore speed and lack of bulk, especialy on special side. Hec, even his physical bulk is not that great - 115 DEF sounds awesome, but if you mix it with 55 HP then not so much.
Tho as i always say - If you realy like this mon that what's stopping you from using it? It still has some qualifies to hit hard, but you will need dedication and right support for it. If you find a way to neutralize opponent's physical walls and stuff faster than 75 then maybe, maybe...
How UNBELIEVABLY BROKEN was Mewtwo ACTUALLY?
Houndoom is one Pokemon I use simply because it looks badass.
How good was Typhlosion ACTUALLY?
Goofy Tragically awful.
Good for Gens 2 and 3 and then it just died off upon Gen 4.
I wish they made him so much better!😭😭 i love typhlosion. Lol i still try to use it competitively😂
Actualy in doubles he was somewhat good in few past formats. Sun-powered Eruption is not a joke. Sadly in single formats he was never good.
It needs a MegaEvo so bad
How good was Muk actually
FSG: there's no bad pokemon
also FSG: making video about castform by roasting it the whole video
Think you could do infernape? Iron fist ability, power up punch/mach punch, swords dance, fire punch and thunder punch with focus sash and adamant/jolly nature has never let me down.
How GOOD was Clefable ACTUALLY?
Golem pls
I love on how they made this awesome fire type Pokemon only obtainable in Kanto..... in a region already lacking fire types...
“I believe in two things, there are no bad dogs and bad Pokemon” This man is speaking the word of the gods
