1981 Mountain House Civilian Long Range Patrol Ration LRP Vintage MRE Review Ready Meal Taste Test

- Huge thanks to Oldsmokey for this rare vintage ration! / gjmitchell62482
From 1970-1988 Mountain House made civilian versions of the U.S. Food Packet Long Range Patrol. And this one here came from my good friend and fellow MRE Reviewer, Oldsmokey. Check out this unusual (and incredibly well stored/preserved) vintage MRE.
Unusual twists of events in this one - edible 36 year old Fig Newtons, perfectly drinkable hot cocoa that has dry milk.. the usual suspects of spoilage turn out to be quite good... considering it was from 1981!

The thing i love about Steve is he promotes other MRE reviewers ALL the time and isn't like other youtubers who only want gain for themselves he really is passionate about MRES and wants us to be too
Hey Shah, thank you! These other MRE Reviewers are great guys and have a true passion for the ration like I do. Their work and documentation of these gems is something of true value and needs to be noticed. Like Oldsmokey, he's not only an awesome friend, but he lives & breathes the life of researching, networking, acquiring, and reviewing rations. It's not easy - but sometimes we like to make it look it. :)
Steve1989MREInfo Omg that should be a t shirt. "Passion for the Ration!!" Lol love it!
Do you get along with Nathan Steve?
Ration Passion!
been watching his channel for about a year, i also love how he has such an upbeat personality about reviewing these mres, hes made me have an interest in them and ive tried some american mres from friends that were in the military. would love to get a hold of other countries mres just to experience what other countries military are eating you know?

These videos have me questioning every expiration date I've seen in my life.
Lol
Let it be a reminder.
They're *not* expiration dates. They're best by dates.
Once the dates pass the flavour or other elements aren't their best anymore.

Wow Steve! I can't believe you got this ration! Back in 1983, me and a friend and his German Shepherd went camping in the mountains of North Carolina for a week. I was 11 at the time (and my friend was 16) so my mom took to me to the Army/Navy Surplus where she bought some gear and a few cases of MREs for my trip. My friend had picked up a bunch of those Mountain Home meals and naturally we would trade 1 for 1. I distinctly remember the chicken stew and that I enjoyed the meal. Thanks for bringing that memory back! In fact, there's another story that came out of that trip...On the 4th day that German Shepherd chased a critter off into the woods...and that was that...he was gone! 2 weeks later my friend got a call from someone whom had found the dog and called the number on his "dog tag". That dog was found in northern Georgia, well over a hundred miles from our camp site! Again, thank you for the memories!
cool!
Cool story
"Hnissssse"
The dog finally came home and said: ”Nice”.
I love reading these kinds of stories in the comments on his videos. Thanks for sharing
The owl on the packages is "Hooty"The owl. Known in the 80s to promote no littering and polluting the environment. His slogan " Give a hoot, don't pollute!".
MMQ he also raped Mr. Garrison when he was a child

I heard he did a stint with the blowfish at some point.

How does a person this cool exist? These videos are almost therapeutic. It's not opinionated or full of politics, and there is no shilling for likes or money. He literally has 400k subs from just making quality video reviews of MREs. I've seen big retro gaming CZcamsrs and car enthusiast CZcamsrs reference this guy. Like my sub base has all seen Steve, and it's awesome his reach is that broad for such a niche thing.
Steve needs to do a crossover with Binging with Babish.
Check out that subscriber count now

Steve is a national treasure, he must be protected at all cost!

You and me both, Steve.
Hey everyone, this video was supposed to be out Wednesday but some major sound issues almost kept it from being released. Thankfully I managed to get them fixed and so here we go!
Huge thank you to Oldsmokey for this interesting ration - I'd never seen a civilian produced LRP before - they were only made between 1970-1988. And are very uncommon by this point.
Here is a link to Oldsmokey's channel: czcams.com/users/gjmitchell62482 Tell him Steve sent ya! He's a fellow MRE reviewer and great friend.
Thank you so much everyone, the channel has now reached 400,000 subscribers - I'd never expected to see such amazing reception for military rations.
There was a point when first starting where I figured maybe with enough work and good luck, I'd have 10,000 subscribers in the first year - and that was aiming high. So again, thank you all!
So I also am releasing a bonus video tonight, a simple yet very interesting Indonesian C1 - so if you have the time, check that one out too.
Alright, cool!
Steve1989MREInfo im not seeing the second video or this one on your home page
Love OldSmokey's channel! Always taking the time to check out MRE videos, leaving comments and always positive vibes with him!
Let's get this on a tray.

Dear Steve,
In one month im leaving for my mandatory service and i would badly miss your videos. I have been watching you since the first videos you posted on YT and loved em, even before the "Nice" quote became a staple.
I can try and find some "Greek military MRE's" since they are used a lot during joint exercises.
Would love to try and send them to you .
Lots of respect from Greece. Keep making your excellent and soothing videos in YT eternity.
Hey Mister_Greek, we're gonna miss having you here! Best of luck on your service time!
So you are one of the original subscribers, that's pretty cool. You've been around for over a year & a half now.
It would be amazing to get a chance to try out a Greek MRE - if you ever score an extra and want to send it my way I would be honored to review it. Thank you for the kind words - and greetings from Sunny Florida!

Steve1989MREInfo Good Lord, Steve-we live in the same town!
Wow thats amazing! He probably thought he was the only person that lived there!
Ha, Steve lives in Floridastan, 2 hours away.
Cool, I'm another Floridian. 63 years in the Gunshine State. Great state to be from, and live in.
Im always suprised how good these look for how old they are
This one was very unusual considering half the contents had civilian style packaging that was not layered and designed to last - and ingredients that also should have made for some real spoilage over the years - yet it was oddly preserved.
Steve1989MREInfo Maybe it was because it was civilian, that it had more preservatives?
I thought military-grade foods have more preservatives because civilian-grade foods aren’t made to last more than 2-3 years. Possibly just impeccable storage conditions; Steve's channel shows if you keep something well-packaged it can last for a very long time regardless of chemicals
Some are lucky survivors (you can tell by how some parts of the MRE aren't as good as others, some having gone off completely), some are preserved because of storage conditions (again, some luck involved, but generally they are pretty uniform), and the last, the best, some are deliberately kept in the best kind of conditions that money can buy (and there are guys out there that have them, i don't know what you'd call them, collectors i suppose).
Either way, most parts are designed to stay fresh for quite a long time, it's a chemistry of various components mixing in (in their static state) and not reacting badly, as, would a regular piece of food would. I watched, recently, a documentary on the way they make MREs and i have to say, that, as food goes, impartial to the results, i think it's one of the highest branches of the culinary world with the obvious exception of space grade food.
Hell, I'd risk and eat it *_*
"I feel like I'm travailing back to the 80's, I wanna stay there."
that made me really sad
It made me happy to think about it and imagine.
Well, it was a great time to be alive.
It makes me sad too, the 80s were cack! No internet, no youtube, no video on demand services, games were pixelated and 2D and there was no way of telling if they were crap before you bought the game since magazine reviews were paid for by the games publishers who obviously wanted to sell their games. Not to mention the terrible 80s pop music that all sounded the same because it came from the same studios that used the same synths. As a generation X'er I'm glad things have moved on!
Times where a lot simpler then.
lou1958
Perhaps Steve's video would have been in magazine format with photos and articles, it still would have been a good read. Times before instant information and media were better in many ways. Life didn't move so fast and people had time to be more relaxed and more civil to each other more often.
The little Owl is from the "Give a Hoot...Don't Pollute!" commercials back then. Super Nice.

At my place of work there was hot coco mix and for the life of me I couldn't figure out why it had a bad after taste well once I finished the tin off I noticed it "expired" about 11 years ago 😅
Similar story. Had an old can of hot cocoa mix lying in the house. I didn't really know why I had it, but it tasted fine so I used it all. Turns out it was 8 years past its expiration date.
"Looks like a bladder!

It makes me so happy when Steve eats old food and it ends up tasting surprisingly great.
I've decided that Steve would probably be the coolest guys to hang out with on all of CZcams. He's just so calm and relaxed. Also, the videos are always awesome.
Steve's "spoon tunes" are becoming my new favorite part of the video
The MREinfo gods have graced us with gifts once more.

Hey Zeros, it really has been a great week for new videos - thanks for being such an awesome subscriber and sticking around for them.
My wife and I both got a kick out of this review Steve, and it was a trip down memory lane. We were both avid backpackers and used to buy these MH LRPs on our hikes along Colorado's Rainbow Trail. Later, we had to go with just MH entrees after the LRPs became unavailable.
Thanks for the memories.
Your MRE videos make me forget about my anxiety so fast. They're so calm and you talk calmly. I love these !!
That was a NICE HISS
Excellent video as usual, Steve.
Hey thanks so much, Caleb.

The I love about Steve is he does this because he loves MRE's and he seems humble and helps out other channels. He throws names out all the time. He just seems like a chill dude, someone who would be fun to have a beer with. I hope he blows up, it couldn't happen to a nicer CZcamsr. Thanks for the hours of enjoyment. Cheers

I've gotta say Steve; there's no other CZcamsr that I enjoy watching more than you. I really appreciate your work and I'm excited to see all that you will continue to bring your subscribers.
Hey FezMan96, that's so awesome. Thank you for the cool & kind words of support. I am always excited to get onto a new ration project, and next week will have some really nice ones. Hope to see you around!
Steve comes across an angry snake and says...."Nice hiss!". Then eats the snake....30 years later.
Hey Steve, just wanted to say I'm so addicted to your channel. My father was in the military and always brought me MREs home to play with when I was a kid in the 80s. Keep making these!
I like Steve's felt map of Okinawa, hanging on the wall. For those who are puzzled, the United States military invaded Okinawa, the main island of the Ryukyu Islands, just 300 miles south of Kyushu, on April 1, 1945. For the Japanese, Okinawa marked the beginning of the invasion of the Japan home islands. For the United States, the Okinawa campaign was the last fought in World War II. It was by far much larger than the Normandy invasion of June 6, 1944. It was also by far the most bloody and costly paid for in American lives, 14,000 men lost in a mere 88 days while the Japanese lost 100,000 men. Still, the butcher's bill was so high that while the U.S. government and its armed forces remained resolute about invading Japan, everyone was terrified of the anticipated casualties. Okinawa persuaded President Truman to approve the dropping of the atom bombs on Hiroshima and Nagasaki? Did the atom bombs convince the Japanese government to surrender? American history books say so, but new opinions have since arisen. It was the Soviet declaration of war and invasion of Manchuria, northern China, and northern Korea that finally brought the Japanese government to despair. The atom bombs put the Japanese in the right direction and the Soviet threat of invading Hokkaido and possibly northern Honshu finally convinced emperor Hirohito and the peace faction of the Japanese cabinet that surrender was better than awaiting the invasion of the Soviets. Initially the Japanese planned to resist ferociously the upcoming American invasion of Kyushu but the thought of Russians occupying Japanese sacred soil finally panicked the top members of the Japanese government, including Hirohito, enough into accepting surrender to the Americans.
DOUBLE STEVES, NICE

This one is really interesting. Civilian rations have come a long way since the 1980s...
This ration was truly fascinating, Tony. Quite the evolution civvy rations have made since then - except I do say MH needs to bring Chicken Stew back.
Steve1989MREInfo
Do you have any thoughts as to why MH stopped producing the
Chicken Stew? Too expensive maybe or ?
Their beef stew is pretty good.
They essentially do make this still, its chicken and dumplings now. The only difference is they use the biscuit bits instead of the "bread" bits that come in the beef stew. Its an improvement. Also biscuits and gravy is GREAT. You just have to get the water ratio right and not add as much as they say.
The biscuit bits in the biscuits and gravy are dang good . one of my favorite freeze dried breakfast courses
