2016 Hungarian 24 Hour Combat Ration MRE Review Meal Ready to Eat Taste Test

  • This Hungarian 24 Hour Ration almost looks like a jumbo-sized vintage US MRE. But inside it has quite different contents including bacon spread, chicken stew, and probably the largest single portion of sweet tea in a military ration. An expensive and difficult to acquire ration - this is definitely one worth checking out!
Huge thanks to MRE Mountain for finding and selling this ration to me! Check out MRE Mountain's shop, he may even have a few of these Hungarian 24hr rations for sale! His shop is always getting in new stuff.

When my son was young in the late 80s or early 90s we stopped at store that had real MREs. My son wanted to try them, so we purchased a few. They were not cheap. I remember telling him they were more than a Happy Meal and no toy. One or two had the cutest little bottles of Tabasco in them, I kept those for years. It was fun to see how soldiers ate. I wonder if my son remembers the experience at all, hope so.

Stay tuned for some outdoor and also very rare & old rations next in February!
In the meantime here are two rations to cap off January (Just released a small Thai MRE so check that one out too).
I bought this Hungarian 24hr Ration from mremountain.com/ He may have some more for sale. Check out his MRE shop he is always getting new stuff in.

@@coltm4a186 A 5- or 6-put Tokaj from Hungary will be expensive, but there will be cheaper ones around. Due to legislation, fortified wines made outside of Hungary can't be called "Tokaj"/"Tokay", but they are basically made the same way. Brown Brothers and a couple of smaller wineries around the Ovens Valley near Millawa in Victoria do very acceptable ones. This area is also a good cheese-producing area, so a couple of days spent sipping and munching at various cellar doors is a good way to spend your holidays.

A real Hungarian MRE should (IMHO) contain:
    - Eros pista -- salty, slightly spicy paprika creme
    - Sport szelet -- "chocolate & rum" bar
    - Globus solet/bableves -- canned bean soup
    - omnia/karavan kave -- instant coffee
    - Globus kolbaszkrem -- red sausage pate
    - Negro "a torok kemenyseproje" -- black menthol lonzeges
    - Kossuth mezitlabas -- a pack of non-filter cigarettes ;)

That mixed seasoning looked very much like a commercial product called 'Aromat', which has been around for many years. I can remember seeing it in both my mother's store cupboard, and my gran's , when I was a kid. It was nice on anything savoury, especially on boiled eggs. I recently saw some in a shop, and bought a pack. It tastes exactly how I remembered it. It's great stuff.

Y'golonac : If you have ever had an MRE there is no illusion that it is not processed or in any way related to real food! I have eaten them both while I was active duty and as a civilian. I hate to say it but the old C-rations were fairly decent. Some of the canned items were tasty.
