HUGE thank you to Sniiip3r off Ebay & MREinfo - here is a link to his shop that sells an extensive variety of international rations including this Portuguese Navy 24hr:

Imagine soilders just sitting around waiting with their juice boxes
All camouflaged in the bushes, and then one them just slurps from his empty juice box.
XD I can actually imagine that
Aw
Actually juice boxes are quite standard in the army.
Been there, done that, disappear into the bush.
I come for the tray, but I stay for the musical spoons.
Sam Roberts Ditto. The tray is, in fact, "nice!" The spoon tunes are the best
Happy people noticed it, it's a really nice touch
i enjoy it too!
1000th like. I agree with statement. Greetings from 🇩🇪!🙂👍😃

You need to open a MRE Restaurant Steve. Provide solid fuel stoves, mess cups and nice tray and we pick a MRE from the menu.
@05Rudey dude, you literally may be on to something... I would indulge. Nice.
Uhoh that would cost alot but id go there
Good idea!!
Pitch that idea to the army for when they rotate out thier nearly expired rations.
There's no chairs either just several small fires and a truck to get the meals from

All the speeding up/ slowing down and pitch changes Steve does when he mixes the coffee are my favorite part of the videos at this point. It's such a funny and unique artistic choice.
That's definitely the musician in him. As a musician myself, I appreciate it so much. Very original and creative.
Do you think Steve has a little audio file he loads into each of those moments? I reckon he might.
Paul Anhalt Expired food videos are best videos. #courage
lefroy1 Could be 2 or 3 audio files
Paul Anhalt bruh what?
This is one of the only comment sections where everyone is super nice I love it.

Except when Steve finds a botulism infected vegetable fiasco or an abomination that's unworthy of being in the tray. Or a sesame bar.
All right. Cool.
Primarily when we all get out onto a tray ...
I knew the portugese would have some canned fish. They’re crazy for that stuff and have mastered the craft
You got it right 😂😂
Portuguese heritage yeah that is very true. I love canned fish
Being an American of Portuguese heritage I completely agree.
Yes 🇵🇹🇵🇹🇵🇹
Yes sir
Anchovies and wine and cigarettes!
Ok, Steve, here we go. 1st, nice review, it's cool seeing an American talking about Portuguese product =). 2nd, if you think that's quality food, don't visit Portugal, you will never leave again, seriously. The canned tuna comes in big chunks and we have far superior quality than that. If you liked the industrial jam, you would think you have died and gone to heaven, when trying the jam made in the villages by old ladies, or even industrial jam by some brands that bet on natural products ( my mother does it great, all kinds of jam and marmalade ) 3rd, The way to prepare the coffee is, mix the coffee and the sugar and add just a few drops of boiling water just to get it moist, not liquid, and then stir very well until it becomes a yellow paste, like 3 minutes doing it. Then add the rest of the water, but only the just amount to fill one of those tiny expresso cups, and the smaller the cup, the warmer it stays. You will have a caffeine bomb full of foam on the top. Delicious. Good luck when the shtf. Consider coming here, for some strange reason, everything that is happening, is taking longer to happen here, plus, we are considerably far from volcanoes, nuclear heads likely destinations, and we still have a lot of wild land, etc, etc.
Now I want old lady village jam!
jose marques you talked me into it

I’d buy that!
So what did we learn here? If you want to stalk a Portuguese soldier during the night, follow the fish and lavender scents.
But seriously, how do these people manage to eat in the field without revealing themselves to the local wildlife and the enemy?
ragabara It's called breaking down the rations. You dump the useless stuff and only keep the essentials. It also cuts down on the size. Besides, you won't be eating unless you're in a secure area.
Actually, I'd pay more attention to the onion and garlic. I mean, those are pervasive in our cuisine, and it's no coincidence both dishes had them and in such a strong dose that Steve actually noticed and mentioned them in particular. Incidentally, that stuff comes out of your sweat right away, you can't really miss it… ;)
Hey everyone, some of you may know, I live in central Florida and we got hit by Hurricane Irma. Preparations beforehand and the aftermath took well over 2 weeks out of this month's schedule.
All is well, and the hurricane didn't cause too much damage thankfully - just some knocked out power (and windows) - and 2 downed trees on the property.
So it's great to be back from that short hiatus and with several new videos this week including this Portuguese Navy 24hr,
and modern USAF Survival Evasion Resistance & Escape kits. I have more videos ready to release including a 1950 survival ration with cigarettes.
So stay tuned! It's great to be back - and for anyone else in Florida (and also Texas!) I hope you all are well and things are getting back to normal for you too. -Steve
PS - huge thanks to Sniiip3r for this ration - here is his shop! Check it out:

Portugese have specialized in canned fish. Overall portugal you find shops offering all kind of different canned fish (tuna, salmon, sardines, ...)
Wonderful!
Nice review Steve!
I only eat tuna like that, it is my favorite way to eat tuna :D And our canned tuna is one of the best actually
Indeed. There are at least two shops in Lisbon like that; one is the real deal (Sol e Pesca - literally “Sun and Fishing” -, originally just a fishing supplies shop but now also a “tasca” - our old-timer version of a bar - smack down in the middle of the Cais do Sodré nightlife district, where you can actually have drinks *and* eat canned fish until late right next to posh bars, strip clubs, vintage discos, etc.), and the other… let's just say it's too much on the “theme park souvenir shop” spectrum for my taste (I don't even know what it's called - maybe something along the lines of “The Wonderful World of Sardines”? -, but let's just say it's too campy and hipster-y - for real, it has a weird early 20th century circus/freak show/late Victorian aesthetic/vibe to it, combined with neon lights -, and sits alongside all the other tourist traps in the Baixa, our downtown).
Fuck, Germany, salami
You definitely do, but a huge part of the industry died, there's a mini wasteland of factories where I live
Canned fish is everywhere
Needs a merch t-shirt saying
"Nice let's get this onto a tray....mmmkay"
Also: A Food TV network should seriously hire this dude...my god he sometimes makes 60+ year old canned food sound absolutely irresistible...
But somehow still forget the 4 bags of salt when he complains about the nuts and the chicken lacking salt lol
These videos make me incredibly hungry.
Someone get this man some snacks! Stat!

The spoon clank is so much more musical on 2X speed...lol
The Portuguese type Quince paste has always been vastly different from the Spanish variety. I have encountered both varieties over the years. I prefer Portuguese Quince paste/spread vastly.
Canned tuna in Portugal does not usually look as processed, it is usually a well cut piece.
You should get the Portuguese MRE from 1961-1974 Colonial War(also knowned as Overseas War).
Now that would be an amazing acquisition!

100% Bosnian lets get this upload onto a tray!
Tostada is not a biscuit brand, is the biscuit format. In Spain (I think in Portugal too) tostada is the rectangular biscuit, and "maria" we call the round shaped. Both are same recipe.
Love your videos btw.
Makes sense that the Spanish and Portuguese have great seafood in their MREs. They take great pride in how they handle their seafood, especially their canned seafood.
5:16 that sound of the spoon hiting the glass cup its AMAZING!! sounds like a cellphone ringtone
When I don't feel like opening my limited MREs, it is quite relaxing to watch somebody else do it. Thanks Steve!
I hear ya there man - hopefully you can score some more MREs so you can enjoy a few of them in leisure soon.
Did you ever open them?
I would watch fitness videos from Steve. He looks like he knows how to stay in shape and build muscle. You got a pre-subscriber here Steve!
Alright let's get you out onto a treadmill. Nice!
Yeeah! The knife cut, the "let's get this out onto a tray... nice! mmkay." The Musical spoon clinks, the love and appriciation given. It's all there! This is why I watch this channel!

I'm here for a lot of reasons, but I love playing "name that tune" with the powdered drink segments :D
Cienfuegos lol yea why does he do that?
I feel like he does it because he has fun with it.
Julie Desantos because he can! lol
I feel like one was king of the hill intro, haha
Yeah, I noticed it too, but I didn't recognise it.
As for all the Portuguese people in this thread, I guess we'll just indulge in playing “name that tuna”. xD
Aquela "marmelada" aos 9:00 é bom para barrar nas bolachas ou no pão, que tem muito açúcar e dá muita energia.
Been subbed for awhile. I sit and watch hours of these videos. I am amazed that MRE's can be so interesting. Thank you for what you do. Most of the reason these are so fascinating is your excitement and delivery of the information. Your passion for this makes it what it is. Keep up the good work!
As a guy who slogs against depression and feeling nasty mentally, your little musical riffs in your videos are a great laugh. Thanks Steve!
I'm glad I could help man - hope your depression subsides and life gets easier for you. Stay strong and stay nice!

@@Steve1989MRE kinda have to be with all those MRE's and stuff you eat being freaking packed with calories and such
This video made me eat three cans of tuna over the next few hours
Sardines are the best. High in omega-3s, very low in mercury. Biggest health issue eating them regularly is the bisphenol A lining inside the can.
I love canned sardines, no one sells portugese ones near me but i love Norwegian King Oscar brand. I often eat the ones packed in oil for my protein source at dinner.
Love the videos so much dude. "Lets get this out on a tray" and "Nice!" have become an inside joke between me and another Steve at my work. It's great.
What about, RAAF,
Missed you MRE Jesus
Missed being here - back with more throughout the week
The nuanced editing of the stirring and spoon tapping noises into a little melody has become my favorite part of your videos. Very enjoyable.
Hey Steve, I don't know if you are deep into music or what, but for what it's worth your music is unique...It distinctly reminds me of Frank Zappa's album "Jazz From Hell"...If you aren't familiar, I'm confident you will find it enjoyable. In my humble opinion Zappa was an absolute genius, all works considered. Jazz From Hell was a jewel which stood out from the rest of his catalog, as it was made on a Synclavier, a vintage and very novel sequencing/sampling machine of early electronic music. Anyway, thought it was worth mentioning. Enjoying your videos, thanks!
Also, I noticed you are pitch/time modulating all the clinking sounds during stirring etc. in your videos, in order to form happy little jingles. Very nice touch.
It's really something you mention FZ and Jazz from Hell. I grew up listening to his music.
Jazz from Hell is one of my favorite works of his, along with Waka Jawaka, Grand Wazoo, Zoot Allures, Sheik Yerbouti, You are What You Is, and I almost forgot Overnight Sensation. Some of his stuff is too satirical for my tastes, but when he was injured on stage by that crazed fan in Germany and his larynx busted and leg broken he was only able to compose - this was in late 72'. He then worked on Waka Jawaka and this is when I feel he really came into form. His first album Freak Out! was fantastic - and some bits like Hot Rats were not too bad.
But Jazz from Hell - my favorite tracks are Night School, G-Spot Tornado, and Massagio Galore. I did enjoy Broadway the Hardway with Hot Plate Heaven at the Green Hotel and Jesus Has Just Left the Building and Any Kind of Pain. But by 1983 he had started to get sick in an evident manner with prostate cancer - this effected his energy levels and he never took care of himself... and it reflected in sound sadly. But that synclavier work was really something. 1986 - I wonder how he must have been feeling by that point? I think he found out about the cancer in 1988 and he stopped touring shortly thereafter. Poor Frank.
I write my music in classical notation on an old program that is pretty outdated - it really gives the proper sound and feeling for what I want. But yessir, I was raised with good music. I was brought to concerts since a baby - I remember sharing Good & Plenty licorice candy with my older bro at a Paul McCartney concert with my parents at only 3 years old. Bruce Springsteen, Bob Dylan, Eric Clapton, and later on I became a big fan of Les Claypool and Primus - along with Bela Fleck & the Flecktones and also Huey Lewis & the News. I was also as a young child became introduced to Ryuichi Sakamoto and Yellow Magic Orchestra - some of my favorite music right there.
Thank you for the awesome comment - best one pertaining to music that I have read in a long time.

When you get these 24 hour rations, do you eat the ration and only the ration for the day? It'd be cool to hear some after thoughts about how hungry you still felt (or not) after each meal, and at the end of the day did you feel like it was enough to sustain you are did you feel it needed more calories?

Steve, love your videos man. The way you describe tastes and textures in detail makes me feel like I am eating the ration as well. I wish I could try those sardines. Your explanation of flavors and quality is great. You could easily be a food critic. What is your food background, were you a chef? Just curious do you ever go to fine dining or tasting menus? Keep up the good work. Thank you.

these videos are so much fun to have rolling while you're preoccupied with another task. I think I'm getting second hand information and will eventually start discussing the different specs of MREs while my family looks on horrified. Its cool to see all the different dishes and accessories included with other countries made ready provisions.
Nice to hear you folks are okay down there. Having retired from the Marine Corps almost 16 years ago, i never thought i would even be interested in anything even remotely MRE-ish. But here i am, binge watching. Nice!
We had a container of MRE'S to load on Military Sealift Command vessel at the port of Jacksonville when someone noticed the container was smoking. This was back in the late 90's & needless to say it was not loaded, nor were any other mre's until their investigation was complete. It was concluded that water had breached the container & some of the MRE'S. We need to send some of this stuff to the hurricane victims! Thanks for sharing.
Oh wow! Thanks for sharing that neat story - kindof a shame though. I agree I hope the worst hit from these hurricanes are getting some MREs from FEMA
Anyone else play eye spy with the shelf in the background to see if you can notice anything different on it from the previous video....
I think twice now (possibly just once, I'm old and all but I do think twice) I saw him put something up there. One was a pepper packet (Korean War era iirc) and the other was a can I think.... maybe.... I'm pretty kind of sorta sure... so yea, I do the same thing :P I look to see if those things are still around and if anything else has changed!
I wonder if the pack od smokes from the vietnam ejection kit are still in his collection anywhere
I love watching your videos. Never thought I would be interested in MRE’s, but you make them fascinating
After many years of service, I honestly never imagined that I would get so much satisfaction watching another person taste test MRE's, but Steve seems so genuine about what he does and finds so much satisfaction in little things, that it literally makes me happy to watch him. Your videos helped seriously curb my depression brother - salute, and thank you.
