Hey there, everyone! This is a relatively simple review of a very fresh 1998 LRP Chicken Ala King. This was the best generation of LRP in my opinion - back when they were packed 16 to a case, and the contents were absolutely delicious and classic!
This video shows your older tan pouched LRP's are still most likely fresh, so don't toss 'em! They are very enjoyable Rations, and it is one of my absolute favorites.
I'm sorry this isn't something very old and crazy, so that is why I decided to do a 1951 RCI B Unit Can review the same day so you guys can get a nice double feature night. :-)
Thanks so much, as always everyone for your loyal support and kind words! You guys are the best!
Hope you enjoy the review!
-Steve

LET'S GET THIS OUT ONTO A TRAY, NICE™
NICE HISS™
I'LL BE COMING BACK AT YOU WITH SOMETHING NEW OR OLD, ALRIGHT COOL SEE YA™ - Zábava
My father served in the first gulf war, and he now hates chicken ala king
Thank you for helping me visualize his horror
487th Missile Defense Squadron in Doha Qatar. I feel his pain.
I appreciate both of your sacrifices
The freeze dried ALK is actually really good. The mre version is kinda gross.
We used to have to warn guys about selecting that particular menu. Guaranteed someone would eat it and get sick. They were terrible.
Those skittles may have actually been worth something. It was before they changed the green from lime to green apple. Many people prefer the old lime ones.
+Juice Never ate skitlles.Bright colored food makes me sick. Are they good?
+Juice Green apple tastes awful. The packing still says "orginal" on the new ones, almost like they are taunting those who enjoyed the lime flavour...
+kuraironin They are alright, have a really artificial taste. Personally I never seek them out not my favorite candy.
Juice Yuck.
I miss the lime Skittles and lick-a-maids
Love the way all these things are packaged, and it's so satisfying to see them opened.
Is it weird that some of these videos make me hungry?
In my experience? No, not at all. I, actually, have a tendency to prepare a meal, and watch these sorts of things :) .
nope
+A I always watch these well i eat xD
+wavygr I watch them so I can see what MREs are good, and they're entertaining.
+Steve1989 MREinfo I love skittles
You can watch any of his videos, no matter how many years ago it was posted and it feels exactly like his new videos. Makes any of his old catalogs I haven’t seen yet feel like “a new video!”
A fellow in my 1st unit would save the dried peaches and pound cake.. He'd mix the creamer, sugar, and a little bit of water. The result? Peach shortcake.
That’s genius
Part of me is always worried when you taste super old rations, because no health care.
Then I watch this and I'm like "Nah, what? 1998? Nah he'll be FINE..." Nothing compared to old mate eating something from the 1950's right?
Then I'm like "Wait, 1998 was close to 17 years ago!"... And Then I'm like "Yeah, no biggie"..
Talk about perspective.. :) You're one of the hardest motherfers I know on this tasting circuit, and I think
that and your sincerity is why people love you so much.
Well done again as usual mate, and thanks for your kind words.. :)
dingo7055 No health care?
What?
People have healthcare here, dude. It just isn't paid for by the taxpayer.
@@Centurion04 I mean, Steve had to crowdfund to help pay for medical bills when he got seriously sick due to an unexpired ration. So…taxpayers are paying for healthcare in this instance. Would be better if the US Govt just provided a decent standard of universal healthcare so people don’t need to rely on the kindness of strangers.
@@jackpowrie3 You're just trading the problem of "relying on strangers" for the problem of me and everyone else having to anonymously pay for all those strangers when we do not wish to, nor feel any obligation to.
And that's just for my own actual countrymen. It's a whole different story when millions of people who are NOT my countrymen come in and feel entitled to that same handout. Aside from the morally repugnant nature of such an ask, it's totally non-viable and unsustainable anyways.
Is the healthcare system perfect? By no means am I saying that. It's massively flawed.
But is it as flawed as universal healthcare in places like canada, where medically assisted s**cide is now being chosen by and tacitly encouraged for those on long waiting lists?
Because that's the current state of what I have always heard held up as the perfect example of universal healthcare.
would you make an episode about what you would put in an MRE if you where an MRE company :) it would be great to see what you pick
He’d probably throw a shot of liquor in it, an frh that would melt rock, Australian instant noodles, kimchi, Korean sausages, waterproof matches, Nescafé instant freeze dried coffee, a spoon that could double as a backhoe scoop
@@boho3785 No dessert?
@@boho3785 You forgot a pack of menthols from 1945
@@boho3785 As long it has some nice hiss, right?
that is a good idea
Hard to believe '98 was 18 years ago...that chicken could vote in the next election.
+Steve1989 MREinfo Alary Kington (sorry for the bad joke lol)
MAGA!
Now it’s 21 years ago
@@lettuce3696 freeze dried food can last 30 years easy
Fuck CZcams The DNC already has them registered through ACORN.
The old skittles actually used fruit juice in the candy if you read the back of the new ones they just say artificial or " natural" flavors
Oh damn. I really miss it how producers use real sugars and natural fruit juices to make products. Almost everything nowadays are made with corn sugars!
Expectation: "Let's get this out on a tray........Nice"
Reality: "let's get this out on a tray.....alright"
You disappointed me Steve ;~; you didn't say "nice"
but he has earlier in the vids
I agree, but I think we can let him slide..since he invented it and all. Nice!

BLOOD VETTEL lol
Always feel like saying goodbye to Steve when he ends his videos. They always seem so personal :)
I thought I was the only one who felt this way, lol.
I do say goodbye. I also say good morning to the sun every day
This MRE actually looks remarkably good.
Dude, those chocolate covered oatmeal bars, they need to make and sell hose. I miss those from my days in the Corps.
it's cool that you give a shoutout in every video to the other CZcams MRE tasters. Like you have no reason to at all. but that's really nice of you to always show your appreciation in every video:)
Nothing like the smell of an Accessory Packet in the Morning...lol
+Steve1989 MREinfo good movie, I need to watch it again soon..
I was in LRSD in 1998 and I do not remember a LRP ration. We got the same ration as the regular infantry. I do however remember Chicken ala King. The hard noodles were the best for snacking on. This, version of the Chicken ala King, Ive never seen. Chicken ala King was always a huge Infantry favorite, I remember alot of us fighting over this one, well, mainly because people just didnt like the others that were available. Also, the John wayne bar (OATMEAL COOKIE BAR) and the Chocolate oatmeal cookie bar were huge too in the infantry. It kept us going while on the march. Bad part, you usually didnt crap for a day or so, so when you did, it was painful.
OMG, I can't believe that Chicken ala King survived. Some folks liked it but I sure never did. However, when in the field, you get what you get and there is probably no MRE that is not fixable with things like hot sauce and cheese sauce! The freeze-dried version looked MUCH better!
It's weird to come watch an older video of yours and see that you had arm hair at one point lol NICE!
been watching you all weekend long. its so satisfying to see everything unpacked laid out perfectly.
Welp we were going to wait and watch this one tomorrow but we couldn't wait. Definitely one of the coolest and most educational videos ever. Crazy how stuff can still be so good after so long. That chicken in there is only a handful of years younger than me! And those Skittles were cool to see too. Also really good to know about breaking up that bar and using the cream, I saw on there that it could be broken up and was wondering what it could be used for. Very happy to see you address it! :) Awesome stuff as always
I love how happy you sound when you’re talking about these things :)
Oh my God, Natick Food Labs...I worked there for a short time. Used to live on Elm Street in Natick, MA.
What did you there, at Natick?
Needs answering!
So it was a nightmare on Elm St?
I will show myself out.
Is that by the Twinkee factory?
@@thecman26 Used to be...the Wonderbread factory on Flutie Pass got bulldozed to build a Nordstrom and change the Natick Mall to "The Natick Collection" >:I
OMG I just finished your "Hockey Puck of Death" video and I was blessed to see another in my video feed, I'm so excited yay!
Man! After about 18 years this was a pretty appetizing ration! 😀
Thanks for sharing Steve!
The red packet curse strikes again. Damn Tasters Choice.
Hey Steve, when I was in the army through 85-88. We loved chicken ala king. We would trade for it. I don't know why people say it was the worst. It was the best.
its always great watching you enjoy these mre's your always trying. your the best outa all of the mre eaterers
This is the first video I've seen from the early days, and dang, Steve has improved his content 100%!
LOL I don't know why I keep watching these VIDEOS OVER AND OVER AGAIN 😅 I never get tired of watching them
You are the man! I really enjoy watching your reviews.
your channel is surprisingly entertaining, defiantly going to subscribe. keep up the great work.
OG Skittles with Lime, noice.
+aawillma Can't believe he didn't catch that.
Who even likes green apple over lime smh
Green apple>lime
Was fun watching one of steves older videos
You can see his style was still developing
I miss being in my old LRS unit. Good times and great guys.
Thanks for the awesome video's! I'm not sure which reviewer I saw you're channel on, but I remember joining when you had a little less then 1000, and now you've skyrocketed to 6825! You're hardcore, and you're reviews, and dedication to preserving these relic's is legendary! Can't wait for the next one, any insight on what you're next few video's will be?
+Steve1989 MREinfo I can't wait for that! Very interested in what the soldiers in back then ate! Again thanks for the reviews, they're really informative, and even kinda funny when it's an older one haha
Every time I open a food packet I listen for a hiss, whats happening to me. . .......
Do you then get it out on to a tray? If so then Nice.
r u gey
You are entering final form my friend. Welcome, it will all make sense soon
I swear these videos and those rrcherrypie ones are the most relaxing and hunger inducing videos on CZcams
spending my last hours of 2016 binge watching steve1989.. NICE!
really just reminds me of what's in a modern day mre, except for the chicken ala king. might be wrong, im not sure? also congrats on 8k subs steve! wow man. I remember when you were only at 200! haha. I can't remember who it was that sent me over here. if I remember right it was shultz maybe? but still. you'll be at 10k subs soon! so congrats!
***** awesome! The reactions you have to be drawing them in! Haha. I know I love it when I just start hearing you talk about the terrifying smell and such, then you end up trying it anyways. With the famous last words of "I won't try it..... okay just a tiny piece." Haha. Keep up the great work steve you desire the support of everyone here.
i always wanted to taste a bag of these stuff .. i also found myself having an interest in space food i find it pretty damn cool!!! keep up the amazing work steve !!
i am always happy to support :D !!!
Our XO told me he learned to love the Chicken Ala King just so he would know his fav MRE was ALWAYS available out of the case.
I sometimes eat cold chili out of a can while watching your videos, steve
I love how it's all formal
bro i watch your vids. crazy how you like those i guess because i ate them so much i cant stand them even jow 14 yeats after retiring. so props bro. keep up the vids. those things fed my infantry ass for a looooong time
Thanks Steve......nice video. We don't see many LRP reviews.
Liked and subbed
I love how wholesome most comments are on these videos. The only thing that annoys me is the complete lack of originality. It’s the same “jokes” over and over again.
Steve's videos really relax you and are great to watch after smoking a blunt
Oh man, checking out this video for the first time. Steve! Didn't show you eating the cooking, no pouring out of the main course....these older videos trigger me! This was my safe space!
I'm having trouble with a boss in a video game. I put this on. It's really nice to listen to while playing.
Honestly you have the voice a radio talk show host would have
He sounds like the guy from scrubs. Love your channel Steve! Keep it up
I like they paired the Chicken ala king with double toilet papers
This channel is better than anything on tv.
Oh yeah, you get a nice focused macro of that mold in this one.
Loved those oatmeal cookie bars!!! Everyone grunt I ever served with loved those!
Another great video.
Why do I love them so much?
I'm suprised that you can get here this fast in the CZcams MRE community and the food community in general (duh cause' your vids is so amusing) btw, keep those videos coming and hunt for some more half-century old peanut butter :3c
Good idea, with the cereal bar, coffee creamer, and water :) . That's some ingenuity, right there!
+Steve1989 MREinfo You're welcome, dude :) .
Man, that chicken ala King looks delicious! I love the makeshift cereal lol.. The OJ looked a bit dodgy, but overall an awesome meal. Can't wait to open mines!
Omg I had this when I was a kid in the 90s when it was fresh. I remember the orange Kool aid. Not much else but wow thanks for the good memories
noo should of kept the Skittles! the original no longer has the green lime in them anymore.
I'm sure you will find another one with them in them in the 90s though. .
Nice video, Steve! I had the same thing happen to a coffee I opened up in a 2004 and a 1995 MRE.
***** Yup, they just don't seem to hold their seal. The new tubes are much better.
McAllen, Tx is located in the RGV!!
I haven't had chicken a la king in ages. They used to serve it when I was in Job Corps. It was one of the few meals there I could stomach. And it actually tasted good, too.
Amazing dude. A LRRP ration? Those guys were unbelievably tough.....comparable to Ord- Wyngate and his jungle fighters.
I always watch these while I eat. I don't know why lol
Nathan Manuel same!
Same here
Same here, lol!
For any soldiers discovering new and tasty "cream of wheat" pouches in their ration kits.. thank *Steve* :)
I remember the factory where these were produced in McAllen, Texas. I ate one of their MREs during Medical Readiness Training in the Air Force.
I dont know about everyone else, but i much prefer this approach of speeding up of the video instead of the jump cuts. those were slightly seizure inducing at times!
Steve rightly earns the MRE master title in my my opinion.
Don't you guys agree?
Yes
Suprisingly well kept
When I was with 3/8,a Marine Grunt unit in 84. We would mix a pack of sugar in the coffee creamer. Roll seal the end and cook in over a fire or coals flipping to keep from burning for a minute. Let cool and you have a sugar (Ranger) cookie.
Fuck the apocalypse weapon testers, this is the guy I want on my team. He knows the good stuff from the dog shit
Ramsey: Today's challenge on Master Chef, you will have to make a MRE using whatever is under your box. Our guest judge from Steve1989MREInfo, is Steve himself.
Steve: alright let's get this on a tray.
That's how I see your cameo. Lol.
You're the Gordon Ramsay of MRE's.
You should absolutely do a side by side comparison of an old MRE to what a modern one is like if you haven't already :)
I don't know where you are getting your info but that dessert is still being made!
He didn’t say: “Nice!, mmkay”. After “let’s get this out on a tray...”
where's the metal tray?
lol yea... looks like one from prison or grade-school
I think he eats on time period correct trays to correspond with said ration and corresponding country and date of production
its probably been asked a million times, but i didn't see it going through the comments: where do you acquire such old mre's? great videos btw, keep em coming!
I was in the army and remember eating this particular MRE in the field. Those chocolate covered oatmeal cookies were the bomb but I have to admit liking the regular oatmeal bar better because I used to dip it in hot chocolate.
my dad always talks about this one
Great spoons in these MREs. I traded in my lexan spoons for these plastic MRE spoons. Not as durable but all around better for general purpose trekking.
I have to say.. this is one of my favorite of your videos. It is two years plus some days later, and this is something I dream about. Chicken a la King is only good either freshly prepared or dehydrated like that. The other way just looks disgusting in the first place.
That brownie cookie thing looks fabulous.
I like the reggae dub music in the background you did at the end!🎹🎧💫😎👌👍✌
Hey man! Whats up? Stumbled upon your videos and I'm enjoying them very much, despite the fact that I understand nothing about the subject. Anyway, just out of curiosity, do you eat these full meals or just taste them? In some of your videos you eat like 20, 30, 40 year old food, do you ever had some kind of health incident for eating old food like this?
This looks like the best MRE pack I have seen
I have never thought to do that with the creamer.
Now i wanna try it. Damn you!
Well, I have been asking around here and might have my first kit coming in soon... So hopefully it has a bran type bar in it
Had these in Vietnam in 1970. Not bad. Don't know if I would try one now.
Loved watching man! Video was great as always! I use to take the creamer (since I dont drink coffee) and sugar, add just enough water to make a thick paste, and add it to my cocoa drinks for a marshmallow taste. Was it the same as a real marshmallow? Of course not! But close enough for government work right?!
+Steve1989 MREinfo Yes please try it first! It's been so long since I've had it (5 years) it's hard to know if it really was good like I remember, or if it was the fact I was overseas. Wonder if I have some MRE Cocoa lying around to give it a try now, I know I have like 30 creamers. Doesn't take much more than a few drops of water to make a paste, I remember that.
Most my best meals overseas came from using a crockpot to cook the MREs. Slow cooking a beef stew with a bunch of chili, crackers, hot sauce, and hell anything that tasted good was a perfect dinner. Would always try and bring some to the watch towers too. One of the few perks of being on such a small fob.
Keep up the good work man, you have refined your reviews very fast. They look extremely professional, and as a result are that much more enjoyable to watch! Combined with your personality, that's just a winning combo.
Lmao, this dude is worried about the food coloring from the Skittles...
😭
He seems to be concerned about msg as well which is hilarious
@@ackshually404 And aspartame.
@@RoundenBrown aspartame can actually be bad for you tho while there is no scientific/medical evidence than msg can harm you (unless you where to eat many grams of it in a very short space of time)
There’s literally nothing with eating these old food as long as it’s been properly stored
Hey Steve, FWIW Oregon freeze dry is the parent company / old name for Mountain House. I just watched and now I realize what the second bag is for, thanks!
I opened up a five year old mre and it had wild berry skittles in it
I love your voice and your hands and your face. I love everything about your videos. Thank you for doing these and for being so damn handsome. ;)
You got yourself another subscriber!
This guy is my favorite of all. He is the Bob Ross of mres
Thanks for making these, you are hilariously entertaining
Love these vids
R.I.P. Lime skittles
Brings out chocolate oatmeal cookie. My Girlfriend "I love those" Steve: "Who doesn't love those." Perfect timing
That was my absolute favorite, followed closely by the beef frankfurters. That was in late 80s and was dehydrated.
