I trellis some of mine, especially my Japanese sweet potato because I like to eat the leaves and stems in salads and they are good cooked like any other greens. If you have an Asian market nearby you can get the Japanese sweet potato and grow slips also for your garden. I been growing mine for several years. I didn't think about ground cover under trees, that is an interesting idea I may try. I am in northwest Florida almost to Alabama zone 8b here. What part and zone are you gardening in?

I bet the vines on the trellis can also have the side benefit of being an attractive ornamental vine. Neat idea I may have to steal that! Thanks
