Krazy Ken's Tech Misadventures #21 - iMac Erase and Restore (Late 2009
Krazy Ken gets an iMac tossed his way, and the client wants it reset and cleaned. The only little issue is it predates the Recovery Mode feature. So, will Ken be able to use some basic competency skills to erase and restore the computer? Probably not.

Most likely the drive needs to be reformatted and the os reinstalled. Had a similar issue and that was the fix

My Wife has the same year & model. She’s never updated it & it’s been the best Computer we’ve had. I cannot remember how many laptops & desktops we’ve gone through & this 2009 IMac is still kicking hard!!
Last week I was given a 2009 iMac 21.5" with 8GB of RAM. I dual booted El Cap and Win 7 and all is well. Not bad for free.

I know a LOT about Windows, probably more than I should. I know Linux more than I should. I was just given a 2017 iMac Pro, which arrives on Tuesday or sooner (it's 9/10/22 as I type this), and I came STRAIGHT to your channel in preparation for the awesome machine that I was just blessed with! I've been rocking a 14 year old Asus "frankenbuild", which is on its' last leg, and I'm SICK of microsoft's bull crap! Your videos are "le helping" more than you know! Thank you!!!!!!! (this will probably be my last post from this ancient dinosaur, as I don't have another machine as of now)
I remember my old school had iMacs from somewhere around that era. I think they ran 10.6.8 to.
Never missed El Capitan - still running Snow Leopard on all Macs ✌️
I upgraded to El Capitan on my early 2015 Macbook Pro when it came out, I burnt 40% of my battery in an hour while working in Pages. The thing was I was at uni then and one of the main reasons I bought a Macbook was for the 10 hours battery life. Also, if Pages burnt through so much battery in such a short period of time, imagine what heavy-duty programs like Avid Pro Tools (which I used on a regular basis) would do. Safe to say, I downgraded within an hour of upgrading and Time Machine became my best friend.
My favorite is Mountain Lion, OS X 10.8.
@@ForwarderFactory heck no, Mojave on apfs takes way more longer to boot on apfs, and on extended journaled it still takes long to boot on ssd and is unstable as frick
Pro-tip: You can paste paths into terminal that contain the proper backslashes and spaces with "control-command-V".
Hi Ken, Thanks for sharing! , after seen 10's of videos and nothing worked so far for my old Mac Mini 2009+this really help me a lot , still struggling to create a new drive without a second mac , but ill figure it out. some features like apps Store not even working , but i will see !
This was my mom's iMac while I was growing up. I had the older white one and playing games on hers felt so much nicer I loved it

I feel your pain, sort of. I had to replace the HDD in my HP all in one back in October. The hardware part was embarrassingly simple, and quick.... The OS replacement? Not so much... it seems the BRAND NEW flash drive I had burned the recovery media on was....corrupted, sigh. Had to get a friend who happened to be a tech at the local Staples help me find ,and install the recovery media. He actually asked me if I wanted the flash drive back! I suggested destroying it with fire. I still won’t touch that brand of flash drive.....

We had this model in high school it comes with snow leopard but was upgraded in 2013 to mountain lion and were then relocated to the library because they bought the new models for the computing lab

I have an older iMac 9.1 and have installed Linux Mint 19.3 Cinnamon on it. Works like a champ.
OH I made a big mistake updating my 2009 iMac to Sierra, is there anyway I can move it back to Yosemite or El Capitan

question, I have no money for a mac. I know about the project hackintosh but the last I read a few years ago is that you need very specific hardware. May I install it on AMD base system. cause I have a very hateful relationship with windows and no Linux is up to the task that i'm using this PC for.

I have a late 2009 imac that I hadn't used for 8 years. Someone wants to buy it but wants High Sierra to run on it. I started it up and El Capitan was running on it. I then confirmed that LATE 2009 imacs can indeed run High Sierra. So I started downloading High Sierra from the app store and during the installation process the screen just went black. Now it no longer turns on so it's "dead" after MANY attempts to force restart etc. It looks like it's probably the screen that's black (and not the imac not turning on at all) because when I attach an external disk to the imac, and try to start up the mac, the little led light on the external disk lights up, so it seems like something is being powered-up (although nothing shows on the Imac's screen).. Anyone know of a fix??

What about when the hard drive was a complete loss? How do i get the damn os image to reinstall on replacement drive
On my mac pro it doesnt let me drag it onto desktop because it just moves it from the original spot. You have to right click and the select “copy”
i cant access the part where you choose the drive to load from, like the usb.

I think network recovery was added when they took out the optical drive.

THIS IS ME IN A NUTSHELL HOLY CRAP.
I previously had the same model of iMac before upgrading to my MBP late 2011.
For OS I stuck with Mavericks only because of the Photos.app. (just not a fan of it as transferring from iPhoto to Photos is just to much of a hassle)
Plus most of my programs work and didn't want a newer OS screwing anything up.
Anyone else felt the same?
iPhoto will run fine on MacOS Sierra if you have the latest version of it (should see the update for it in the App Store after updating the OS).
7:23 and yet... My late 2009 MacBook, which apple supported for longer because of schools using a lot of them, when i put High Sierra on it, it doesn’t lag!

In case anyone else stumbles on this a year later... the reason the late 2009 macs go for so cheap is that Apple used a very specific harddrive model, and imposed it on all future upgrades. The cost of a kit to install an SSD, for example, is over $50. We've got one and I wouldn't pay even $100 for it, and I wouldn't have last year either.

The backslashes don’t indicate a space, they are the “escape character” telling it not to interpret them as spaces ending the filename, but spaces within the filename

Can you upgrade to SSD and High Sierra with this kind of Imac model?
High Sierra is compatible with this late 2009 iMac. These Macs can also be upgraded to SSDs, but they are a little more tricky to upgrade as you have to go through the screen. But it is possible.

Just picked one of these up a couple weeks ago for 40 bucks, slapped an ssd and Mojave through a patcher by dosdude1 and it’s been working wonders. Then I got it up to 8gb of ram and it’s even better!
