We get many questions about how we afford to travel full time around the world, so we have decided to add a “How To” series to our channel to answer those questions and many more. Today, we share 10 money saving tips for how to travel the world for cheap and how to save on travel expenses.
We sold all our stuff and explore how to downsize your home and why, how to lower your taxes and travel more, along with a mindset change to that will lower your healthcare costs.
Once on the road, we look at cheap places to travel and how we balance the low and high cost countries to maintain a travel budget. We have learned to embrace public transportation for both much lower cost and better understanding the culture of a location. We also try to eat only one meal a day and minimize the number of times we eat in restaurants each week.
We usually stay in Airbnb vs Hotel, mainly because it enables being able to grocery shop and cook meals at home, which saves significant amount of money.
We put all of our expenses on a travel credit card, which certainly helps us afford world travel.
We try to find low and no cost activities to find everywhere we go. Our motto is “cheap is good, but free is better” We use the Chase Sapphire Reserve and found that to be a great travel credit card.
We also discuss some of the best side hustles and talk about our CZcams channel and how that will eventually help offset some travel costs.
We hope you enjoy the start of our 9-month European adventure and also go back and check out our adventures in Central America and seeing all 50 states during our Airstream journey across America.
Please join us for a 10-year journey and world travel vlog. We wanted to retire early and see the world and film our adventures in 4k video. Perhaps our world travel will give some ideas on what to do after retirement and where to travel in 2022. As older travel vloggers, we have different perspectives as we show you where to visit in 2022 and give you our experiences as we travel the world and show you where to travel now. This is our retirement and we want to share it with you.
We hope you will subscribe, join us on our adventure, give us some likes and send us comments and suggestions. It means so much. Thank you and hope everyone has a wonderful travel 2022.

I want to know what you pack in your bags!
@magentaottertravels We plan to do some packing videos as part of our how to series
@Retirement Travelers ... A question for you re: health insurance. Since you're traveling mostly outside the U.S. this year, how are you handling health insurance coverage? I assume you one through one of the traveler insurance providers and don't have a plan under the ACA, because they only cover treatment in the U.S. My wife and I have a couple more years to retirement, so we're trying to plan ahead. We'd like to travel the world as well, but may need to be in the U.S. a few months out of the year.
@@golfaddict9 I think splitting up your travels and spending periods of time back in the US is really helpful for a lot of reasons👍
My prospective budget is $1900 a month for home in USA.
If I divest myself and sell it all, and move home base to Colombia or similar, that saves $1400 a month.
So if SSA is all and nest egg is only $50k or similar, then travel full time can be done.
Even with $900/mo SSA payment.
Thank you for the video. We have traveled to 95 countries and most of your ten points are well aligned with our actions taken. We are now close to 70 and have slowed down due to the COVID-19, but we have begun to travel again. This year, Kyrgyzstan, Laos, Cambodia, Vietnam, and next year to Argentina, Chile, Brazil, Bolivia, and Turkey. The world is too big not to travel. Keep on traveling!
We really loved this comment!! Your life of travel is amazing, but still circling the globe at nearly 70 is truly inspirational. Safe travels and stay in touch. John and Bev
@@RetirementTravelers One thing I might add to your list would be converting your home (or part there of) into a rental property for a passive income. We converted our home into a couple of rental properties when we moved to Rwanda in Africa for a ministry and they have provided passive income. And their values have also gone up so that we have gained from both income and appreciation. Any asset that does not produce cash flow is a liability to me.
Thanks. We sold our home and nearly all possessions, so that is not possible for us. We agree with you about assets and cash flow. John and Bev
@@jongheum what happens if u have issues with the rental property?
We used property management services.
Thanks Bev and John. Unfortunately my husband and I worked till 65 and 69. My husband felt like he could only take a week off at vacation, so it was the beach or the beach! To do what you have done, requires both spouses to want the same thing. I would have loved to travel, my husband felt travel was work. After our retirement, we began going to Europe for a month. We stayed in VRBO's, took public transportation, planned our free walking tours or followed tours others recommended and had wonderful times. Covid came and travel came to a halt. We've been on several cruises and for us they are a good substitute for the more rigorous travel by land. Our ages make that type of travel more difficult (76 and 79). Now my husband has been diagnosed with a debilitating nerve condition and travel is a big question mark! Kudos to you!!! Enjoy every day and make lots of memories! You didn't wait...waiting can change everything.
Just go by yourself. Love solo travel. Then you're both fulfilled.
Thanks. So sorry to hear about your husband's health condition. Wishing him better health and hopefully more travels.

Sending you a big hug Jody. ❤
It's not the same. I am a 65 year old woman, on my own for almost 20 years. I have done some amazing solo trips and still want to,but it would be nice to have supportive and caring company , someone to make decisions with.there are remote places I don't feel I could to myself. I've been in some pretty tight spots and had to figure them out all by myself, which I did, but still- not as enjoyable . No woman friend I could imagine going anywhere with. so Johan an dBev are so fortunate to be together and on the same page. Best to them!@@LisaSoulLevelHealing
With all of the travel videos I watch, I can't imagine why CZcams hasn't suggested yours until today, but I've now watched 3 of your videos! You two are so easy to watch and learn from. My husband and I are both retired teachers, but still teaching. That is our biggest obstacle right now to traveling more, since school calendars don't make for the best pockets of budget travel. We travel about 3 times a year, and picking up tips from travelers like you help quite a bit. I hope your channel grows quickly!
We don’t know either, we’ve worked hard to improve our craft. Maybe we just had a few lessons to learn before we got that proverbial push from CZcams. Thanks for your compliment. It meant a lot! Happy trails and thanks for giving of yourselves by teaching children. John and Bev www.retirementtravelers.com
I agree. Just found this chanel and love it! It is so interesting and helpful. THanks for the tips!! I'll be watching more of your videos for sure.
Yes, same here! Been watching travel vids since before covid and just now discovered these folks. Better late than never, as they say.
Being Canadian, I don't have to worry about the cost of healthcare! Anyways, good tips guys! We just came back from a 3.5 months trip with our 3 kids. To save money, you basically have to live in a way that you earn more than you spend. For us, it's : no big home renovation, one car, almost no restaurant, cheap activities like camping and hiking, not buying too many new clothes, dropping cable TV, make sure you have the cell phone package you really need, only buying stuff when we have the money, etc.
Sounds like you have some great things in place. Well done. Hope you enjoy our videos on retirement, downsizing and travel.

We waited until 71. I worked full time, through serious medical issues until 71( husband retired at 65). We are doing it, but starting younger is the way to go!
Thanks and best of luck with your travels.

Foreign grocery stores and hardware stores are wonderful. I agree 100% that visiting those is a great cultural education and experience.
We enjoy all aspects of learning and embracing other cultures. It is one of the most enjoyable things about travel.

John & Bev, you two are delightful! Thank you so much. I especially liked how you said not to be so cheap that you don’t have any fun. I completely agree. Your attitude is so refreshing.😊

Great tips. We are also travelling full-time in our 50s. We RV around Canada and the USA right now. We agree with you that avoiding a lot of restaurants and choosing free activities often makes a huge cost savings!
We loved our time visiting all the national parks in the lower 48. So glad we did that before we left for global travel, as it showed us that we have such a beautiful country. We knew it, but seeing it was another matter. Thanks for the comment! John & Bev
Public transport causes random, serendipitous encounters with people and places.
We have met many interesting people on public transportation! John and Bev
I love the lounges. Also, you can choose a flight that might be cheaper, but has a long stopover, because you hangout in the lounges.
We will do that as well. It works out well. Safe travels. John and Bev

We've been retired for a year and a half at 66ish. We live in an in-law suite inside our son's home, with his wonderful wife, and our two grandchildren. No debt, just a cellphone bill, super healthy. We've been doing typical travel, tours, river cruises, etc, but recently came upon the idea of flex-patting, or staying a month or two somewhere, moving somewhere else or returning to home base for a bit. We are going to pursue this with gusto in 2024. I'll miss getting those Viking River Cruise catalogs every day ;) All the best!
We did a video on flex-patting last year and think it is a great idea. Enjoy your travels and hope you have an amazing 2024.

Hello, my girlfriend just told me about you guys. We are planning our retirement, (55&56)… we have to start scaling back expenses now so that when we do retire we no longer have that baggage….for now we are taking short road trips and cruises… new subscribers…❤
Tell your girlfriend we said "Thanks". 😊 Good luck with your retirement planning and scaling back. You might enjoy this video we just did called a Life without stuff.

YES!!! Totally agree that more expensive doesn't mean more fun. Theme parks are a rip off. Getting out in nature, exploring, and spending time with family is most rewarding ;-)
We think we have finally learned our lesson! It is also fun to create your own fun.
Hi 👋 Bev and John,
My wife and I have been traveling for the last fifteen years and have been to over fifty countries.
Traveling keeps us young and has kept our love fresh. The moment we get home we start planning for our new adventures for the following year. The both of you are living a fun life; enjoy every moment of it.
Thanks so much for reaching out. Perhaps our travel journeys will cross paths someday. We are loving this adventure and cherish the time together.

Just waiting on my wife to finish her US govt career-she’s eligible for reduced retired now (21 years of federal service), but wants to work 4-6 more years. I retired from the military almost 10 years ago and receive VA disability compensation on top of my military pension. We have lived overseas, in connection with my military service, for about 10 years total in 4 countries-and I’ve also spent time traveling to many other countries during my career-and we’ve spent a lot of time in Ecuador (wife was born & raised there) and Spain (she has family there, too).
Best of luck with your retirement planning and travels. Thanks for watching and hope you enjoy our channel and website.

I'm very excited about a "how to" series. I spent 5 years traveling the world by teaching English. I'd take a new job in a different country every 6 months, on average. I also did inexpensive travel--hiking like the Appalachian Trail and the Camino in Spain. Just bought a travel van and hope to see more of the USA for the next couple years. I really need to work on a side hustle, though.
Thanks so much. It sounds like you’ve had some wonderful adventures. Good luck in your van and hope you can follow along on our journey around the world.

Another great video Bev & John!! Love all the tips and strategies you use to make full time travel doable. I wish my husband were open to the "downsizing" part of the plan but living in the SF Bay Area, downsizing doesn't always mean that it will be less expensive. I want you to know that I appreciate all the work that goes in to filming and editing your videos. I truly look forward to watching and living vicariously thru you and your experiences!! With time, the money will roll in for you (I hope!)!! You make everything seem so fun and easy. We travel too and I know it isn't easy, but it is fun, and so worth it!! Thank you, thank you, thank you!! Continued safe travels to you both!

I started watching and it struck me that you seem like really nice people - so ive subscribed, im sure I'll learn from you 😊
I have found your videos to be very informative. I traveled by land in the UK and France in the summers of 2017 and 2018 using public transportation and a few cabs and Uber rides. I also used a backpack that carried all I had with me. I would do the same if I took another land journey. Scotland and the UK were unseasonably warm in Summer 2018, so I sent some clothing back home that I knew I would never need for the rest of my trip. The rest of the story is that both years, I got to and from the UK on the Cunard Queen Mary 2; no jet lag, and the port agent in Southampton stored my larger suitcase with my informal and formal attire that I would only wear on the ship. As I'm not a fan of flying, I will do the same when I resume overseas travel next year.
Thanks. Enjoyed your story. Thanks for sharing.

We have a similar "side hustle" LOL, with the same results (so far). Great tips and advice. We also do the bulk of our food intake when traveling in the form of home cooked meals and reserve the eating out to "local cuisine" usually from places recommended by locals.

Of all the tips you gave, which all were wonderful, the best in my opinion was to become debt free. I think it would literally shock people when they realize just how much of their monthly expenditures is for purchases from months or years prior, or how much they are actually paying in interest. I retired early at age 62 and started some traveling, and the main thing that helped me was becoming debt free, other than my mortgage, before retirement and living on a budget. I am comfortably living and traveling on half the income I had before retirement from work and debt.
I also love the tip about using public transportation. Many cities in Europe will have passes you can purchase for unlimited travel on any of the various forms of public transportation. Also, cities such as Prague, allow free travel for seniors. I believe they set the age at 65, but also offer discounted pricing for between 60 and 65. Whenever I stay long-term in a location and have a kitchen available, I always visit the local market and pick up supplies for breakfast and lunches. On most days, I will only eat out once per day, with some of the eating out being at street vendors for a meal costing $7 or $8, or less. You don't have to dine at 5-star restaurants in order to enjoy your journey. Also, if you have the opportunity, find out where the locals like to eat. They're not going to pay the tourist prices for meals.
As far as medical insurance is concerned, I go with a company called IMG that costs me about $10 per day for 100% coverage and zero deductible, as my current insurance does not cover international travels. Since I'm not traveling full time, but only about 3 times a year, it's very convenient and cost-effective for me.
I do need to change my current airline credit card over to one of the travel cards that does allow me into the airport lounges. One other perk with the lounges, if you have a long layover, some of the lounges have shower facilities, and it's a good place to get refreshed if you're in the middle of a multi-day journey to your next destination.
I love the motto, "Cheap is good, but free is better."
Thanks and glad you enjoyed our tips. We have been using the Chase Sapphire Reserve card and we really like the overall travel benefits. Hope you can follow along on our journey and enjoy our channel.
Safe travels,

@@RetirementTravelers like the look of your website but interestingly the link doesn't load to my Google browser and when I tried to search for it on Google I could only find your Instagram account. Not sure what that's about
(I was trying to bookmark it in Google so I can circle back to it when I have more time)
@@susie9893 Thanks. Not quite sure about the search. We just tried it and CZcams, website, Instagram and LinkedIn show up. 🤔. Thanks for letting us know and safe travels.

My husband allowed me to take a taxi once on our travels. I broke my foot right before going to Japan. We had a long day of site seeing and I was tired so this once I took a taxi back to the hotel. Lol we prefer public transportation too! Thanks for sharing! Priority Pass also has some $ benefits at some airport restaurants. That Airbnb looks fabulous!
Thanks. Public transportation is usually great. We also have Priority Pass and used it many times. Safe travels and thanks for following along. John and Bev
Hi John and Bev,new to your channel Heard about you on Sound retirement podcast.I like what I’m hearing.I know it’s personal but if we in your audience had a better understanding of the budget concerns ,it would be helpful.Thank you and happy travels
Thank you for your comment. We appreciate where you are coming from in wanting to know our budget, but travel has so much variability. Given that, we try to balance our high-cost countries with our low-cost countries. Our accommodations are the most expensive item, as we can eat reasonably and cook in the Airbnb. We have been in Italy and Greece, as of late, mixing some higher with lower, but we are heading into the Balkans, where the costs for rooms are much lower. It isn’t hard to figure out a budget if you are dedicated to full time travel. My suggestion is to just start playing around with destinations and price out a trip. We travel via public transportation and rarely rent a car, as this can be as much or more than accommodations. Certainly, we would not be able to afford this lifestyle if we tried to keep a home in the USA. Overall, we have found full time travel much more affordable than we thought. John and Bev
Fantastic tips! I am glad you took the time to share these with everyone!

Wonderful video! I’m mid 40’s and my husband is close to 50. We’re planning our retirement in the next 2-3 years. We are debt free but for our home which we will be selling and have our savings and retirement money in place. We also have the other tidbits in place (healthcare, etc.) I’ve been looking into the perfect travel credit card and best perks. I like that, cheap is good but free is better! 😊 All in all, we are never promised tomorrow- so we are getting into it without fear! Thanks for sharing! Wonderful information!
Thanks. So glad you enjoyed it.

We are headed out to travel through Eastern Europe in a couple days, I am so excited to get out and see the world. Best wishes to you both!!
Thanks. We spent 3 months in the Balkans last year. We went to every country. Some great bargains in places like Romania, Bulgaria, and Albania. Go to Lake Bled in Slovenia if you can. We did a video there.
Safe travels,

Thanks for the tips. Its funny, but we also retired at 55 here in Florida after buying our dream home, but we are currently travel mostly within the US, but we have 2 overseas trips we take each year after football season. As Retired Veteran, i'm able to Fly Space A to both Europe and Asia so it saves on our overall cost, since we are no longer needing to pay the Flight cost. I doubt we will end up traveling full time as we spend half a year back and forth to Miami (Season Tickets to the Miami Dolphins) and our Grandkids who live up in Virgina, but all your recommendations are spot on. I look forward to looking at more of your videos too.
Thanks and glad you enjoyed the tips. Sounds like a great deal for your world travel adventures and there is plenty to see in the USA. We spent 2 years touring the country in an Airstream and loved it. Safe travels!

Hello you guys! Thank you for the tips. I'll be starting my traveling journey this year. I'm in my 30's and I've decided, why wait until I'm in my 40's or 50's to begin my journey of traveling the world. Life is very short and fragile. Especially with everything that is going on in the world today. So I'm just here to enjoy it and live it the best way I can.
Great plan and good luck with your travels. Hope you can get inspiration and ideas from our world travels.

@@RetirementTravelers Thank you so much! And most definitely!
This is a great video. I found you guys recently, your how to and financial videos have been very helpful. We will start January 2024 🤞🏻🙏🏻. We will be selling our home too but after the first year to make sure this works for us.
Question. Is Columbia your home country now since you found doctors or is Florida your home state?
Thanks and congrats on your travel plans. Glad you are enjoying our channel. We are still US citizens and Florida residents, we just prefer places like Colombia because the medical care is good and SO much cheaper than US. John and Bev
PS. We have no regrets about selling everything and traveling. It has been amazing.
