How to travel the world with almost no money | Tomislav Perko | TEDxTUHH

- Many people daydream about traveling the world, but all of them have the same excuse - lack of money. Tomislav, after traveling the world for years with almost no money, shows how it is possible for everyone to do the same, if they really want to.
Tomislav Perko, 29, is a travel writer from Croatia. After a career of a stockbroker, broke because of the financial crisis, he hits the road and turns it into his home. He uses alternative ways of traveling - hitchhiking, couchsurfing, working/volunteering, and manages to wander around the world with just a little bit of money in his pocket, meeting the most amazing people on the way.
Five years later, he publishes a book “1000 Days of Spring” and goes around giving lectures about what it means to live on the road. Find out more on his website: tomislavperko.com/en/.

Just turned 19, I've been wanting to travel the world my whole life and after watching this, any other route in life at the moment seems insane. Wish me luck!
alone?
Aaron Clay same I also am considering a gap year or perhaps come back during the fall, I'm a second quarter culinary arts student in community college and cried when I heard what the word break from college / gap year was and wished I found out about it when I was a senior in high school. I've thought of not being with people I'm around with but does it matter? You'll meet different people and you're going to be on your own. I want personal growth and happiness instead of being in school my whole life and am not very dedicated in changing myself to have better grades however I'll do my best and do it.. instead of saying.
Aaron Clay Good luck boy. Follow your heart :)
good luck.. and advance welcome to Bangladesh :)
how much money did u save? im 26, feeling life running from me, n im sit watching.
"20 years from now you will be more dissapointed by the things you didn't do, rather than the things you did."
Love.
Exactly ☠️😢
Indeed. I want to go and do this, and it’s easy for many of us including myself to leave comments saying we will ‘now go out and try and explore the world’. But honestly how many of us will end up just forgetting about it or letting the easy route come to us instead and not bother at all, making all of our words hollow.
I’m really scared that this will be the case for me. I’m trying to say yes a lot more than I used to, but when it comes to things that require a lot of money, longer working hours or possible language barriers, it really is easy to become demoralised and just let it sink into the back of your mind and continue on as usual, only for that feeling to repeat again a few weeks, months or years later. I only hope I can do even a little bit of this while I can.
What will really happy, only time will tell for all of us.
@@danielwhyatt3278 same here i want to travel to california in usa next year
Old person here.......who can in fact confirm this. And it's really depressing when it hits you that you had one life, one shot and you wasted it. Wasted it out of fear of what other's might think of you, of failing, of being wrong, of being alone or from letting others talk you out of it and the mistake of always thinking there will be more time. And it hits really hard when you see other people living the life that you could have.
Not just 20years from now. Dude, I’m 25 and I’ve got several things I’m disappointed I didn’t do or at least try doing in my previous years
These 18 minutes felt like 18 seconds.

I am hitchhiking around the world and I film my journey daily
I have hitchhiked across 50 countries and counting

yep I'm interested.
hitchhike the world i just finished watching your Europe playlist and i loved every video , i felt like i was hitchhiking alongside you , love your stuff dude and goodluck for the future
God I met him!! my friend picked up him, hitch-hik in Malaga. He stayed there for some days!! very kind, he had a note book were he was writing his experience.
World is short 😊 for the big heart
I don't think that it would be safe for women to do this kind of thing to be honest
Just a small note. This is all wonderful and amazing, but as a woman most of those choices are a very real threat to safety... it's not even a matter of "you can do it if you are careful" because there is no way to calculate in advance what situation you will be in. Very happy for those who have the chance and priviledge to experience this. Be also mindful of more fragile people on your journey :)
Damn, that's sad :(
I know women who back pack alone across the world and hitch hike and coach sirf.... not saying it isn't harder and more risky but some girls do it too
Hmm, yeah to a certain degree. It is risky and unpredictable for everyone though, it’s just a matter of weighing the risk against the possibility of adventure. No one can tell you exactly how dangerous it will be and it’s a very personal choice you have to make before you go on an adventure like this. But I don’t agree that you “can’t do this” as a woman, yeah maybe some things are more risky as a woman, but to be honest I wouldn’t sleep in a park as a man either. You can still find a way to have an adventure, where it’s worth the risk for you.
My point is, being a woman is one factor of many in a very complex equation, if you wanna go on an adventure, just find something you’re comfortable with, if it means traveling with a friend, traveling a bit more expensively to sleep in hostels instead of on the street etc. there’s lots of ways to still have an adventure.
@@Jon-Jon-Jon-Jon exactly. I wouldn't sleep in a park either. Indont hitchhike. But I have a isrelian female friend who hitchhiked in guatemala amd mexico and is not in Argentina amd hitchikes. I just bus a cheap bus/shuttle ticket. Being a female def gives another variable but it's just that, another variable. Not an end all be all its impossible to travel alone now bc I know tooooons of solo female travelers who travel like I do (shuttles and hostels or coach surfing)

Thankx bro.
What did you said to your parents and did u spent your own money or did some work?
Also what were your other experiences if u can share some.
@@sukuamor I told my parents that I going with for 2 days with my friend but after the 2nd day I didn't pick my parents call. Yeah I spent my own money and lived very cheaply in a hostel at 230 per day met many people from other countries. I climb, tried local alcohol, couchsurfing with locals its was a really nice experience, hope I will do it soon in 2-3 weeks
nice bro
Why no one is worrying about your safety.. Isn’t it way too dangerous and risky to go out and travel?
@@jxlim4613 It could be, but.. When I open my couchserfing page, I see that somebody wants to visit my city and I can help them with money, place and food. Just because they want to meet my culture and traditions. And actually you can feel some stress thinking about them. Imagining how travellers would have to speak foreigner language with somebody, how hard it could be to find place and maybe food. So you can help them. And it works in both ways if you want to go somewhere like this guy.

Hey I saw your comment in a ted video about traveling world I mean how do you do it without visa like without passport of other country how do you cross the border
I am a Japanese girl and I started to travel when I was 19. I've done hitchhiking alone over thousands of kilometers. I use couchsurfing and do work exchange at times.
It can be scary at first especially if you are a solo female Traveller.
But once you learn how to choose a right host to stay with, right driver to ask for a ride and trust your gut feelings.. You will enjoy this way of traveling.
Stay wild and Safe travels!
That sounds amazing! Wish i could do it too in the future! 😊

the way I see it, 20 years is still gonna pass regardless, so you can spend those 20 years not doing anything and regret everything, or do everything and regret nothing.
In less than a month I'll be trekking around Europe. As a 23 year old woman, I think I'll opt for hostels rather than coach surfing or hitchhiking but I look forward to all of the people I'll meet

No offense Paige but I really think its safer for you to stay in hostels than coach surfing. Hitchhiking can be dangerous for both men and women. Travel but use your common sense. Good luck Paige.

You need money for those.
I met many hitchhikers/backpackers while my overland journey across Asia, and surprising, few of them mentioned your name and this particular video as an inspiration or a reason to start their journey. You are one of the reasons I also decided to try hitchhiking. I'm revisiting this video after 3 years now. There is something so inspiring in this video and I really needed it now. Thank you Tomislav. Stay happy wherever you are ❤️

In about 1984 when I lived in New Mexico I picked up a older couple from England who were hitchhiking around the world. They had already been across Canada and down the US West coast and throughout Mexico. He had his retirement pension sent to banks along their way. They were on their way back to Vancouver and were then flying to Fiji and Australia. I never heard from then again but they sure expanded my concepts of what is possible.

My name is Simon and I'm a 21 french guy. Two years ago I saw this video and I was hoping to travel like that, but after dreaming, I was back to my sad reality : studies that I always hated. I was always saying to me that I will be happy later, but now I have to make sacrifices. And also, I was not ready to quit everything to hit the road, I think I was not brave enough. But now my mind changed, i'm ready to stop my studies because i hate it, and I'm completely ready to quit everything to travel the world. I'm super motivated, and I'm gonna do it in 2022. Before my departure, I'm getting ready : in my mind, in my family's mind, and I want to save a bit of money for visas. And through my journey, I want to prove to the world that we actually can travel the world without ever flying.
I'm in the same boat my guy. Studying jsut to get a job you don't like. We gotta live now so we don't regret the past later in life.
You don’t have to go all or nothing. Just start out going for a month or two between school breaks. See how it goes.
@@MrBertoharris great advice, thank you very much!
Hey bro , where are you ? Had you started traveling?
That's it. I decided. I don't want to live my whole life as a slave, working for the governments and corporations, feeding the machine that is the system. I don't want my life to be a constant grind for money, achieving "success" by working, working and working until my muscles give up and forgetting every single day of my life. This video and You, Tom, inspired me greatly.
Just thinking about all the people I can meet, all the adventures I can experience, all the sights I can see gives me that happy feeling. But the first step to succeeding in this is... getting all the Visas :D

+M1X3R I'll tell you one thing 'growing up' the way teachers tell you your supposed to is bullshit, have you ever seen or heard of a person who went straight from school to work and lived a happy life? No, they usually die with many regrets.
There really is a line between having enough money to be able to afford things you want and having enough time to actually DO the things that you want. Its all about finding the balance thats right for you, you cant have one side without the other, it just wont work.
The weird thing is i wonder why anyone ever uses the phrase 'grow up' or 'what do you want to be when you grow up' like they do anymore, its such a depressing way to look at life
beautiful man, Sam here!
it's hard for me to live this long awaited dream .. my passport "Iraqi" sucks I need a visa for everything , my religion "Islam" makes alot of people uncomfortable or even a potential threat and being a female makes me an easy target if I travel alone .. the only way to do it is to share this journey with someone .. so I'm waiting for the right person to come :) !

Last Summer I spent 3 months cycling across all of Europe. It was such a joy, people were so awesome, I made good friends, and I have so many amazing stories.
When I got home everyone was excited and for 2-3 weeks I told friends my stories, but pretty soon they get tired of your stories. When I travel I feel alive, I feel like a rock star. When I am home I feel like a everyday schmo. Just another face in the crowd.
For me there was some post travel depression. I did NOT expect that at all! It was only when I began planning for my next adventure that I began to feel alive again.
I learned a lot from my trip. I learned that I can live without a TON of stuff. Everyone is obsessed in US with getting more and more stuff. Screw stuff! Give me adventure and the open road!

YESSSSSS! It's so true!! What you said about the post-travel depression is spot on. I feel like my life is on hiatus in between trips. I love traveling so much that even when things go awry I'm still happy. When you're at home and things go wrong does it get to you? I get so pissed and stressed yet if they happened on a trip it doesn't bother me. I wish I could always be the person I am on vacation. I like him a loooooot better

When hitchhiking ;
Recognize that , when a driver passes you he represents something.
He represents a static moment , like any other you normally experience , a passerby on the street, in a shop exc.
What you are waiting for , is a moment that belongs to you .
When someone stops to give you a ride ,
you have what is yours once more.

The last few minutes really hit me. About 5 years ago I built an e bike and went in a ~900 mile trip around the Pacific Northwest. It took about 3 weeks in total. Everywhere I went people were amazing and it really helped restore my faith in humanity as they say. But everyone also told me to be careful of others just like Tomislav said lol. Since that trip I have been yearning to go on another adventure. This year I moved across the country to a place I have never been and have no one nearby that I really know. It’s exciting but it’s not the same. Life on the road can be lonely but I’ve never felt more free. Personally I am working on option 3. Traveling with a solid base camp to return to 😁

You can hitchhike as a man, but as a woman, you shouldn't even think about it.
Why?
+Whipped Cream AJ Because you put yourself in an extremely vulnerable position. You're alone, standing by the side of a road and anyone can stop to give you a ride. It can be a nice woman, a father of three girls, or a creep. Someone who will drive to god knows where and force you into god knows what.
That's not saying hitchhiking is never something women should do, but please acknowledge that it can be dangerous, and that you should be careful about whose car you get into. This also goes for men, by the way.
+PoisonTheOgres Of course hitchiking may be hazardous for womenbut not always.I have girl friends and they are hitchikers, even so, it is really dangeorus. I heard a few stories about women raped and killed.
look up Edmund Kemper and Ivan Milat and you will never hitchhike again.
Google "Huyen Chip". She is a Tiny Vietnamese girl and she has already traveled around the world like this guy by hitchhiking and couchsurfing!!!
I love his conclusions about how, we are all human at the end of the day.
No matter how long you wait,
The right ride will come.
Anyone in the age of approx 19 wanting to go on adventure?

This man has truly LIVED his life. Great inspiration for all!
I like having a home more than traveling ( no better feeling knowing you have a home , with food and snacks and a high end gaming pc, and dogs , and a wife and kids )
Nice, I’m watching this and still laying in my bed!
“How to travel the world on almost no money”
“Be homeless”
There are better options...
Even homeless requires Visa to travel from one country to another
That is exactly what I tell people. I have absolutely nothing except my boat. I have no money saved and only survive by the few sailing charters I get here and there. I am basically a homeless person traveling with no savings living day to day BUT I AM TRULY LIVING LIFE!

okay, one of the best ted talks i've watched.
Tom, I know exactly what you mean by post-traveling depression. Your advice on how to handle it is something extremely valuable I hadn't thought of before; thank you for that.
Sometimes u want to do something big in your life but one thing in your mind is to how how others react & a fear of your parents & we think can parents allow for this. If parents has not any problem that what my kid do & what want to do then evey kid or anybody may a grateful life. Live a great life
How many of you are watching this. And feel imprisoned by your current existence? Your 9-5. dead end. Your hated routine. The "same ole same ole" Scientist did research on the probability of a person even being born and it is 1 out of 400 TRILLION!! A rare occurrence . Why are we not using this gift to live happy? Well. I've been rotting away for 2 decades now. Thinking there is so much more to experience besides my sheltered little world. And im gonna sell everything. And travel. In one year i will be able to take the leap. I can always come back to my dead end life. But the pain of sitting here watching the world go buy, and CHOOSING to live in depression has finally taken its toll on me. I haven't really lives since my 20s. And i can no longer abuse this gift of life i was given, Good luck to all of you. And remember. CHOICE is your most powerful weapon
Did you follow the dream friend?
Hi Neil, I’m going travelling myself alone as an 18 year old this July, I wish you luck on your travels and hope it goes well for yourself. Regards
D P I’m the same way. I can’t work a job and live in the same old town for the rest of my life. I’ve went through 6 jobs in the town I live in because as soon as I get a little bit of money saved I quit and go travel for a few weeks.
Neil! give us an update buddy.
Late reply I know dude, but you are 100% . There is absolutely no point in Living a life where there is no progress . If you want to take a year out fromyour life get saving and pack a bag and go . The worst thing that can happen is you get a better perspective on life and what you want . You could live in a bubble forever and get no further. So yeah have you managed to get going???

I meant it literally stonned. Like people throwing stones at me. But yeah...your comment also makes sense.. Might as well be "stoned".. Haha
I replayed this video twice because he showed me how to live a full life. I'm thinking of what story and how I can give a talk at the TEDx conference.
I could watch this video every single day even after 7 years of it's publishing. Interesting travelling stories, so pleasurable to watch and listen. This motivates me on so many ways.

Whats this thing that so many people seem to not have a passport?? I thought you get one as soon as you're like 1 year old and then just renew it every 7 years for like 30 euros or something...

I did the same for 7 years between 1992-99. Long before CS, internet like it is now. I sailed across rhe Atlantic and swam in the model of it. It's the greatest part of my life. I bitchukme between petrol stations so you can talk to people. Very different to juat sticking out your thumb.
I don't drink. I hang out in cafes. Cheaper, and a seat to watch people. You never know who're going to meet.

Bro sorry to say but 3-4k$ is enough for bank statement for getting visa and all other part of document is true.
@@alwayssporty8102 $3k-4k doesn't exactly count has "'having no money"'. Plus, many people from developing countries don't have $3k-4k just lying around in the bank.
@@arhamfarman6364 you didn't got my point he exaggerated and said we need to show 100k$ in bank statement but that isn't the case 3-4k$ is more than enough although 2k$ is enough to get a visa approval.
