I’ve been playing Nintendo since the early 90s and my younger siblings grew up playing Nintendo. I got a Switch on day 1 and I can honestly say this has been my favorite Nintendo generation of all time. I’m 34 years old and I thought the magic of gaming was starting to dissipate into the void of adult life.
Although the generation isn’t quite over yet, it feels bitter sweet to say goodbye to the Switch because I have so many memories of late nights playing games with friends, taking the Switch with me on long flights, I even bought my god daughter a Switch Lite for her birthday and she burst into tears of happiness.
Nintendo has been able to maintain their magic and “wonder” for over 30 years, and that is something truly amazing! Here’s to the next chapter and new memories! Because ultimately that’s what this is all about.
Can't believe Alex did a recap of 2017 and just casually skipped that he placed top 4 in the UK Splatoon Championships that year.

It was such a relief after the Wii U's droughts to see Nintendo looking so strong again. Even if it meant buying the game a second time, playing Mario Kart 8 on a train for the first time was such a thrill. I was really excited to see them supporting Splatoon so soon, too. Breath of the Wild and Mario Odyssey were both spectacular, and the market was there for them, this time. I wasn't really a fan of the way the industry was going in the mid-2010s, and it was great to see Nintendo doing so well again, reinvigorating console game development in Japan and giving people a really compelling reason to explore indie games, too.
I didn't think I needed Mario Kart 8 Deluxe because I had the Wii U version. My pals bought it for me and I soon realised that, yes, I did need Mario Kart 8 Deluxe.
My favorite part about 2017 in gaming was that we were still sort of in the 3DS era as well as the Switch, so it really felt like a golden year for handheld/portable fans
I swear, sometimes i feel like seeing Gta 6 and the switch succesor are the only things keeping me going these days.

I bought my switch in early 2018 from some guy on the internet. A switch with MK8 and Odyssey for $300. He said he was selling it because he loved Wii U and was disappointed in the switch. Such an odd perspective in hindsight. Wonder if he ever changed his mind
I feel the same as he did, though I would never sell my Switch. The Wii U was a better system with more unique experiences. However, the Switch has a much better library of games (due in no small part to most of the good Wii U games being ported to it).

2017 was such a good year as Nintendo Fans! The Switch was upon us with Mario Odyssy,Splatoon 2,Breath of the Wild,Mario Kart 8 deluxe,and ARMS! And 1 2 Switch the game that exists for some reason and got a Sequal to. And Xenoblade Chronicles 2 as well. Also Mario+Rabids kingdom Battle started as well!

My experience with switch in 2017. I was working at GameStop at the time while finishing up my studies at the U. I worked release night of the switch, and requested to have the following day off so I could play. And I did! I slept around 2 am as I played bomberman R and breath of the wild that first night. Mostly breath of the wild. I remember calling my brother the next morning early to see if he was playing and he was! We were both on the phone playing breath of the wild. I was still on the plateau and he too. It was such an amazing feeling and I remember I thought to myself “wow, a home console quality game right here in my hands while I eat breakfast!”

Don’t think a new system is gonna have a 3D Mario and new Zelda in the same year for a loooooong time. An anomaly that seriously boosted the Switch.
What a lovely look through the content of the first year of Switch on this channel. Such fantastic content. It really does show just how strong the Switch was right from the off. I'll never forget going to that Switch preview event myself. Never got to play any of the big three there, but it still showed off just how unique of a thing this hybrid console was.
And yup to that ending bit. The ARMS soundtrack, and especially its main theme, is just a joy to listen to.

I loved the Wii U but I was always laughed at "Oh that smash machine" "Hey, I love the Wii U and both of It's games"
seeing the Switch come out and be this successful was surreal
but the first few months were mostly Zelda botw and I even bought street fighter 2 at £40 Just to have something to play

I never played Super Mario Odyssey until a few months ago, what a legendary game.
I thought about doing a drawn my life but with the Nintendo Switch just as a fun new trendy idea but I didn't think i it would take off. Glad to see that you guys are thinking of doing something similar since the Switch is a big part of this channels growth.
I didn't get a Switch until March 2018 but I remember very clearly as I kept playing my 3DS and PS3 how badly I wanted to get a Switch for a next generation system. I bought my first Switch game with Axiom Verge Multiverse edition because I was just that excited about owning one in the future. My first purchase was Sonic Mania and it all just expanded from there. I upgraded to the Zelda OLED last year and even if the Switch is in its final year, I am still playing something new on it regularly. The Switch hasn't made this excited for video games since the DS and while I am looking forward to its successor, I am setting expectations low so I don't feel too disappointed comparing it to the Switch's releases.
Last year was pretty good with TOTK, Red Dead Redemption, Mario Wonder, and MK1 which has since been fixed. A lot of good classics were released on the online service as well. Almost forgot Metroid Prime, that was a great one as well.

Not only was it a strong year for Switch, but it came out at possibly the best time of my life. I lined up and got my hands on one in the cold of night, played Breath of the Wild during spring break of my senior year in high school, and carried it around with me during my first semester in university. I loved showing it off to my friends and family, as they had a blast with it too in tabletop mode.
I was very fortunate to have that experience. It was awesome to be a Nintendo fan that year

If done right, the first year of any brand new console is magical. And actually in my 35 year experience, there were only two Nintendo systems that had a rough start, and that was the 3DS and WiiU.

For me 2017 is my All Time favourite Year of my life-time just because back then in the Good Old Days when I was still a teenage kid in the Middle-School what was the Best Time of my Life when I was with my friends in everyday at school and that was the Year when I lost my the most Important Friend who switched the School sadly. But gladly there's good memories too in 2017 over a freaking 7 years ago what makes me to feel an old, I remember how hyped I was in the Nintendo Switch's launch and games defienitily Super Mario Odyssey what's in my opinion is still the Best Nintendo Switch game of All Time and The Legend of Zelda Breath of The Wild (what I still have on the Nintendo Wii U) is the Best Port for Switch. I will never forgive the Memories with the Nintendo Switch in 2017 the Greatest Year of my Life, I will always remember you! 😢❤
2017 for Switch was very good, but i don't agree it was its strongest year. It did what it needed to do to establish the Switch and show fans that Switch was going to be more than a Nintendo box that can also play last-gen games. Games like Doom 2016 getting announced and released the same year showed people what was possible. That was the start of the 'impossible ports' on Switch news cycle.
I miss being excited for the Switch. The wow factor was something else with this device. But, now that we have handheld experiences like the Steam Deck and ROG Ally, the success won’t be the same unless it can realistically be better or than the Steam Deck.
When the original Switch came out, it was a pretty new concept. It was exciting to buy DOOM 2016 and play it portably. It didn’t matter that the compromises were made to frame rate and visuals. It was just crazy to have it work like it did.
There’s always going to be excitement for the next Mario, or Zelda…..but I think that a lot of people want more than a highly compromised port to get excited. Like, will the next Nintendo console be able to play games like Jedi Survivor for example? Will it have a better refresh rate than what we got now? Will we see 45fps-60fps? Will these newer, bigger, better Nintendo games actually feel better than the games we have running on the Switch?
Good questions, but life is too short for not getting excited. 😅 A new console doesn't happen every day.
I really enjoyed 2019 for the switch. Just seemed like such a busy year for it. SMM2 is my post played game, I still play it too lol
I loved the hype, don’t get me wrong. I loved both Mario games, but beyond that I don’t have a ton of positive memories of that first years round of games! If you didn’t like breath of the Wild… the year was kinda dead until the end.
The best year of the switch for me will always be 2019. We got Fire Emblem, Yoshi, Luigi’s Mansion 3, New Super Lucky’s tale, and that was when the port train was racing full speed ahead. I got to play so many older games that were new to me because of the switch. Just a magical time!

Personally I loved the Switch when it was released, jam packed with great games and I also adored the concept of the machine being a portable- and home console at the same time (with a focus on local multiplayer).However, I have become kind of disappointed in how little effort Nintendo have made to the overall Switch experience. like the lack of meaningful OS upgrades, lackluster online service (basic online features like "chat", "game invites" or heck even a community like the "miiverse" would've been appreciated ). Ultimately the Steam Deck kind of killed off all incentives of getting indie- and AAA- games for the Switch excluding Nintendo exclusivites. This isn't due to the hardware, but the fact that I trust Valve more than Nintendo. Over a period of 20 years Nintendo has abandoned four of their online stores, cloud saves are behind a paywall and are inaccessible if you don't have online subscription. Steam has remained, and I can still load my cloud saves... Being a WiiU owner I have lost so much money re-purchasing the games I already owned on WiiU, with no good will from Nintendo, like they had with the ambassador program for the 3DS. I don't know, today Nintendo feels like any other corporations that try to extract as much profit as possible from their users disregarding what kind of long-term impact it can have.
For the next video - you should rank every switch year. I thought 2017 was amazing as well. New amazing experience every month

I actually agree with you Alex, I’ve just realised I have a lot games from 2017 and 2018 and I’m not done with the 2017 games and I’m glad I own the best games of 2017 in Mario Kart 8 Delete, Breath of The Wild and Super Mario Odyssey which is arguably the best game on Switch. Nice to see you looking back on the first year of the Switch.
Switch was the first time I had enough disposable income to pick up a console on release day, and some of the early games (eg. BoTW and Odyssey) are definitely still the best for me. The eshop was actually manageable back then too! I'm ready to do it all again for switch 2...

I remember 2017 well. I got to go to a preview event for the Switch (in Toronto), which was a lot of fun. I bought the special edition of BotW at launch, but didn't get a Switch until Spatoon 2 came out in the summer. To make the wait for my Switch (and BotW) easier, I decided to play through every LoZ game and get 100% in each one. It was a lot of fun!

The day the Switch came out, I did what every other Nintendo fan did: I picked up my preorder of Breath of the Wild..... on the Wii U...
switch before the pandemic was a dream come true. BoTW, Smash, Odyssey...
I was amazed that I could play something like BOTW anywhere. I was very sick at the time (I'm better now) so it was nice to have something I could take along when I had to spend yet another day at the doctor's. Splatoon 2 was the first game I actively played online and turned I'm now a forever fan of the series. Super Mario Odyssey was the big highlight, though. I remember having the My Nintendo calender wallpaper on everything and listening to "Jump Up, Superstar" on repeat until the day finally came.
I got my switch in 2018, so 2019 and 2021 were my favorite years. And 2023 gave us super mario rpg remake, so i'd say the switch had great years all throught except for most of 2018 and of course 2020

nope, 2019 was its best year. Fire Emblem 3 Houses, Astral Chain, Mario Maker 2, Dragon Quest XI S, Ring Fit Adventure, Cadence of Hyrule, Tetris 99, Luigi's Mansion and stuff like Daemon X Machina, Yoshi, and Pokemon Sword/Shield. Plus 3rd party support and indies really started ramping up (Goose Game, Blasphemous Wargroove, etc.)
If switch 2 launches with Mario kart 9, its game over
I love the switch but i do miss the nintendo charm in the software. It feels like they have lost all of their character and become another big gaming corporation
I’d say last year was pretty close to 2017, with Mario Wonder, TotK and Pikmin 4 all being goty contenders imo. I really hope they add some dlc to Pikmin 4 because I don’t think I can wait ten more years for more Pikmin, I’m going to be fourty by then.

@@jaretco6423for sure. I don’t usually factor remakes into the quality of a year because I think the best gauge of a year’s quality is the original/new content. Quality remakes are definitely a bonus but I wouldn’t consider Metroid prime remake game of the year 2023 for example because it made the most impact and was the most fresh and unique when the original version came out. Both that and Mario rpg are great remakes though for sure.

I can honestly say splatoon 2 were the best years in the switch. As soon as Fortnite and minecraft came to switch the segregation started. The discord server I was in had 3 full lobbies in voice chat nearly every night just in splatoon 2 then fortnight came and other games and the players were all segregated. Only got worse until sadly very rarely see anyone on even for splatoon 3. It was great to be a part of that movement.
I think a pretty fun video for you to make would be to list the top 10 "leaks" about the original Switch and compare them to what was actually released. I think it could help temper the rumour mills that are constantly churning at the moment.
The problem with Nintendo rumouring is that Nintendo has never really been a more if the same type of company.
Xbox, PlayStation, Sega, they were all more of the same or changes that Nintendo patented.
But from console to console, handheld to handheld, they try something new.
So to say this is going to be a switch 2, that's an likely not an accurate talking name. I'd be surprised if there aren't some new wacky tech coming that would give it a new name altogether.

2017 had me hooked due to both Super Mario Odyssey and The Legend of Zelda Breath of the Wild being out at the time. Found myself switching between the 2 depending on the mood.

Was awesome. I think my favourite game was prob Splatoon 2, my wife and I put countless hours into that game online together, just felt what original needed to be and was excellent. Then Odyssey and Zelda as one player titles were icing on the cake. Oh and Snipper Clips for anyone who missed it! Hidden gem! If u want true partner feuds 😂😂😂 this is the game to play absolutely brilliant puzzle game

The quality of Sonic games could be so much better. What if there was a Sonic game similar to Metroid Dread? It would be such a refreshing change from all the clunky 3D versions.
@sparkypack Actually, I think the Adventure games were good considering the limitations of the 90s. I played Mario 64 as a child and hated it, and still hated it when I tried it again as an adult. Sunshine had great level and world design, but was just as frustrating to play (first play was last year, just bothered to finished it this year) though improved considerably over 64. As an adult discovering Sonic, I actually really like the initial style of the Adventure games. The newer games decided to ditch that after the rushed '06 flop in favor of the dull and repetative boost formula - which is really hard to make a proper game out of, hence the "Werehog" gimmick of Unleashed and the awful 2D platforming they've forced into every game since. Frontiers was an ok move in the right direction as far as gameplay goes, but the story still didn't feel like the free-spirited yet deep Sonic story that made the series so different and special in the first place. Imao get your junk together Sega T^T

This is what happens when you don’t make any good games for like ,a while, lol. Hopefully we see some kind of similar run on the next console. To be honest though I wouldn’t mind if they spaced the releases out a bit better. I can’t keep up as it is.
