  • The Q5 has developed a strong following since it first hit the scene in 2009 but now it's getting replaced in 2018 with the next generation that's going to be built in Mexico. So... do you wait for the latest and greatest or go with the tried and tested? We take the last hoorah of the current Q5, the souped up SQ5, for a spin. And man, it's fun!

    As for the "old" vs "new" - as someone who works in auto industry, here's my advice - NEVER buy a car of the first model year after redesign, regardless of brand! Nobody gets things totally right on a first try these days, even some brands which have a reputation for reliability.

      I did it twice with a Subaru legacy and RDX...both cars were/are great!

    I recently purchased a 2016 AUdi SQ5 and we couldn't be happier. This little SUV is so much fun. For anyone who can live with an SUV this size (on the small side), you truly get something amazing. The next logical step up is the Porsche Cayenne S/Turbo if you want that fun factor...or possibly a Jeep SRT. We have logged 1/2 year's worth of driving, highway and city, and we have no complaints. Recently outfitted our SQ5 with KalTire 19" black rims and Nokian Hakkapellita 8 studded tires and this thing is unstoppable in the winter...so much driving confidence with our nasty Canadian Winter.

      This car really popped for us. So much fun with some great practicality, too. We did not want to give the keys back. Have fun in it!

    Thank you for your review for the Audi SQ5! I've been watching your videos for months now and finally decided to purchase the SQ5. You make it simple for us parents that are shopping for our next vehicle. Thanks!

    Great review. I'd take this one over the upcoming one, mainly due to the bulletproof (by Audi standards) 3.0T motor.
    One note: S model Audis do not compete with AMG nor M division vehicles. The RS trims from Audi take care of that.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  Před 7 lety

      Yes, good point. And the new Q5 will apparently have an RS model coming to North America, too. Which will be bonkers, I'm sure. Good to have you watching, Mike.

      I don't know if RSQ5 will hit Canada but it is rumored to be packing the Macan suspension which is a beautiful thing! I have always said the SQ5 can't touch the Macan in, PDK, suspension and in how much a similarly equipped Macan would be (A LOT more). After driving the Macan I could not get past the fact that there is a lot less room inside. Not good for a family. :-/

    I own 2016 SQ5 with that exact color (it's unique for the S version). After about a year of owning it, I could not be more happy! It does show the age of the model (no USB in 2016? really?), but that doesn't bother me all that much (I connect my phone via Bluetooth, and never even used their cable). The only real downside is the price, yes it does start at just below 60k, but by the time you equip it with options, price skyrockets. MSRP of my car was 71k (it's essentially fully loaded build I had to custom-order and wait for 3 month to arrive here to Canada).

    Trying to decide if I want to trade my 2012 C350 with AMG styling package for a 2017 Dynamic edition. Just having hard time letting go of the Merc and its timeless looks.

    Shout-out from Calgary!
    I'm currently in the exact same situation as you described. I'm looking for a mid size SUV and have my eyes on this SQ5 and also the GLC43. The SQ5 is becoming dated, but the next gen SQ5 probably won't be available until 2018 (for MY2019). In the meantime, the GLC43 stays very competitive with the SQ5 in terms of performance. It looks newer and is equipped updated technology. The flip side? More expensive as a brand new model (dealerships willing to give more purchase incentives for outgoing Q5/SQ5 ); 1st year model probably inherits all kinks and bugs which will take a couple of years to perfect and iron out.
    It'd be great if you can get a GLC43 demo from MB (Lonestar has one) and do a complete review. Would love to hear about your 2 cents. Thanks!

    2018 Q5 Quattro will be front wheel bias. That's gonna take the fun out and probably drives like a regular Japanese made AWD.

      @asmi06 Před 7 lety +2

      Except for TDI version (which won't make it here to Canada...yet), and SQ5 - they will have the same permanent AWD they do have now. One more reason to buy S :)

    • @VWAGB5
      @VWAGB5 Před 7 lety

      They say it doesn't but it uncouples and reconnects. Supposidly in a max of half the time it takes for the cam to engage in BMW's xdrive. Rumor has it that it does not uncouple in Dynamic or Sport mode, it is supposed to stay locked in fulltime awd and never uncouple. Lastly, it has been said that NONE of the S or RS trims will have Quattro Ultra.

    I was in the situation a couple months ago and decided on the current model. I had the opportunity to compare it to the 2018 model that was in the showroom and did not care for the exterior styling. I prefer the German build of the outgoing model since it's a German car and I have nothing against Mexico. PLUS, the 2018 SQ5 is still not available so that made the decision easy. As you mentioned in your video, the info tech is dated and needs updating, but it's a trade off for the other current features.

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  Před 7 lety

      Martin Santos I'm of the same opinion, Martin. Especially for the first year or two of the next gen.

    • @msantos19
      @msantos19 Před 7 lety +1

      To add to my post, I arrived at the Audi initially looking to purchase a Porsche Macan GTS and since it was not in stock at any of the dealers w/in a 100 mile radius in the SF Bay Area and a 4 month plus order time I started to compare the SQ5 feature by feature, option by option and by choosing the SQ5 saved me nearly $15k dollar for dollar. And, considering you cannot utilize either brands full potential without getting hauled to jail for excessive speed, the Audi is a bargain. I love driving this vehicle and highly recommend it to anyone contemplating on getting one. In the near future, a KW lowering kit, APR Stage II chip and AWE exhaust will round out this baby and it will surprise the Macan Turbo owner! Thanks for the Video!

    Dude, you gotta lay off the touch screen crap. It's not a good thing. The more time people spend multiple tapping only to have it crash or get it back logged. I have a friend who bought a 2016 Accord and complained that the touch screen gave all kinds of problems...he said that he thought he would have had an at fault accident while trying to get the touch screen to work. In addition, with the touch screen you have to wait for them to load before getting services in the car going. In the Audi, you have a screen but before it loads you can use he manual dials to get the heat pumping way before the screen loads; nice in Canadian winters. Lastly,, Audi Canada says it's 5.3 0-100 (checked 5 min ago).

    • @VWAGB5
      @VWAGB5 Před 7 lety

      Also, if you only have one kid...put the rear facing car seat in the middle and it's not a problem. My buddy is 6'3" and with the rear facing car seat he had no complaints and had plenty of room with the Britax Advocate ClickTight Convertible Car Seat loaded in our SQ5. ;-)

    • @FamilyWheels
      @FamilyWheels  Před 7 lety

      Hi Charles. I agree that some touch screens are slow to react and annoying. But there are some really great systems out there too. The new XC90 system, even Ford's Sync3, for example. The tech is getting better and cleans up the interior so much. But this is going to boil down to personal preference, I guess. Reviewers gotta review! You're right on the middle seat. Although a lot of people don't have just one child or prefer to keep them off to one side for easier access. Thanks for chiming in.
