This week, Adam checks out the 2017-2021 Audi SQ5. The slightly hotter version of the Q5, it’s for drivers who want the school drop-off to be just a tad more exciting.
Being from the extended Volkswagen family, does it suffer from the same woes as some of its VW relatives? Check out the video to find out.

At ReDriven, we’ll be taking you through the pros and cons of a huge range of used cars to see how well they’re going now that they’re a few years old, have thousands of kilometres on the clock, and are coming toward the end of their warranty, or maybe don’t have one at all.
Plus, thanks to our resident mechanic, Jim, you’ll find out what commonly goes wrong with them and what might need to be fixed.
Most importantly, we want to make ReDriven a voice for the most in-the-know used car experts there are...you guys.. See, you’re the ones that actually buy, live with, love and sometimes unfortunately hate the cars we’ll be reviewing.

I recently bought Audi SQ5 2018 (40 000 km on it), had Golf 7 GTI before.
SQ5 is an amazing car in any aspect, my car doesn't have air suspension (because it's pretty expensive if something goes wrong).
The only issue I have is the rear crankshaft oil leak (so small, that mechanic barely can see it), I'll visit another service to confirm if it's an oil indeed, not sure to instantly replace the rear oil seal (both engine and gearbox have to be detached from the car)

I've got a 2020 SQ5 Special Edition TDI. This has the carbon Fibre Interior, a 21 speaker surround sound and Massaging Seats, the diesel does sound less sporty but gives 700Nm apposed to the TFSI 500Nm and with the 48V Mild Hybrid System the TDI can get as low as 5.3L per 100km which is damn good for a Performance SUV. The newer editions also come with a Wireless charging pad. I did own the previous 2016 Q5 till i replaced it and Yes the depreciation was steep but it does seem to depreciate as a lower in the S model rather than the base model. The Special Edition with the TDI has depreciated approximately $10,000 in the last 3 years which is promising since there is a much more limited spectrum of Special Edition SQ5s available in the 2017 to 2020 edition.

Great review, spot on on the rear rattle. Still have my 2017 and only just had the rear left rattle fixed after having the local dealer look several times. The rear glass roof panel had to be removed for the second time and finally have a very quite cabin. The dealer thought it was also coming from the rear seat so had that removed once but never fixed the noise. I had people in the back when it did become worse and they said defiantly was coming from the roof. Apparently a drain tube wasn't secured, what ever it was is now sorted. Both my front window are quiet going up and down so not sure the noise is a common issue.

I bought a used CPO 2018 SQ5. The car is amazing. People need to get over the exhaust deal. Every reviewer ever has made the same comment. Either you’re okay with the fake exhaust tips or not. Get over it. Still has a great sound. The AUS model in this review is an odd spec. My windows don’t make any odd noises, there is no hard plastics as he mentions and the piano plastic is real carbon fiber in the US. There are heaps of oddities with the car. The display is not touch sensitive, which is annoying. The cup holders are small and share space with the center console. As he notes, limited storage. Also, we have a rear facing child seat in the back and it requires the passenger front seat to be moved way up. Maybe it’s just the key fit car seat I have. No idea. Otherwise, the car is epic. Super quick. The navigation and adaptive instrument cluster is great. Definitely an upscale feel, fit, and finish. I get a lot of looks and comments from people when I’m out and about. Despite the oddities, I would buy this car again.

I heard the mechanic state the interior rattle coming from somewhere. Nothing new on these SUV’s. The subframe above the sunroof is more than likely causing the interior noise. With the acoustic windows, that sound is the sunroof. Grease it and that noise will go away. I deal with this every other month and had my subframe replaced twice. Annoying! This thing is a great joy to drive with 034 motor sport subframe mounts, the chassis and the shell are in sync and the vehicle sounds solid. Away goes your rattles. These things are a shear of joy. Not to mention, throttle controller, stage 1-2 tune on E85 pump, your B9 becomes worth the money and becomes night and day at 500 crank, 480 HP. These are the new street beef sport SUV’s.

Nice car when new but eye watering expensive when it goes wrong,
My next door neighbor had one, he loved it but the repair costs killed it, eg: rear air shocks are $3500ea, he needed a pair and then his gearbox failed, that was $18,000, and apparently there is a computer or control module for the gearbox that you can only access when the gearbox is out and is prone ro failure, so was advised to change aswell, another $1800!
These are not dealer prices either, thats a euro specialist that had serviced the car from new.
He gave up and traded in on a Mazda cx90 and got a whooping $12,000 trade in.

Had the uk version from new until 2020 and tbh it's the worst Audi I've owned. More recalls than you can shake a tick at (18 months until they sorted the clunky brake pedal to name but one) then there were numerous intermittent electronic faults that Audi could never pinpoint. Chucked it in for the new 2021 S3 and that so far it is what German engineering should be... on point 👌

I am yet to test drive it but sat in both Q5 and SQ5. I am stuck either paying 25k US for a typical car saying to myself, don't be stupid and waste 45k on this "fun mobile" yet my bad girl side is saying. lol HAVE FUN screw the rest, and forget all reason. I'm looking at 2018 models for affordability, it was when the new modeled version came out, and cause i don't want the drive off show room floor depreciation. i am looking to have this car for the duration so resale isn't my main concern. Maintenance cost is! I just junked a 2009 Passat that I loved so I'm willing to take and keep these babies (my baby) until she can no longer breathe. Can you please explain or give me something on this question? The Q5 Prestige ( basically a hot chic in mom jeans) fully loaded vs SQ5 Prestige (the pin up model calendar girl)? Will I see a remarkable difference in fun factor, maintenance, or is it a wash? The Q5s are sitting at about 35k USD and SQ5 hit 42-46k. That's the Big Question!!! Thank you for your help and listening to my plea. 😎😂

    • @ReDriven
      @ReDriven  Před 2 lety +3

      Ok, great question.
On a day to day basis and driving normally, they feel near identical. However, the moment you put that right foot down, the SQ5 comes alive. If the extra expenditure makes little to no difference in your ability to live (pay food, clothing, rent, bills etc), buy the SQ5. If buying the SQ5 really stretches you budget, stick with a Q5.
Personally, I think the SQ is worth it but I test cars for a living and crave vehicles that can perform where as I have friends that would be more than happy with the performance of a standard Q5.
Maintenance costs should be around about the same but obviously fuel consumption may be higher on the SQ5 as you'll more encouraged to drive it harder.
