- This is it... Kobo has made a Kaleido 3 EINK Color e-Reader.
Kobo Rakuten brings the heat with the highest quality 6" they have ever made.
The Kobo Clara Colour e-reader is one of the year's most essential releases. This is the first time that the Canadian-based company has ever employed Colour E INK technology on any of their e-readers, and public acceptance of this product is critical for the long-term viability of Kaleido 3 e-paper for future products.

Just received mine yesterday, shipment from Sydney. super excited and it is super light and so easy to pop into my bags.. it’s my 1st ereader😊 thanks for review
The Kobo Clara Colour has a 2ghz processor and the Kobo Clara B/W only has a 1ghz processor, could you do a comparison between them whether if the responsiveness of interactions are affected?
Waiting for 300+ ppi color e-ink kobo or amazon e-reader
What does having to keep the backlight on at all times do with battery life? Compared with the b/w Clara and Libra, who do not need backlight to be able to comfortably read.
The review I have been waiting for. Great to know what Kobo has done with Kaleido 3 compared with the other companies. The only thing missing for me as a book reader that really will only have use of the colour screen for book covers with few pictures in the actual book, is a comparison with a black and white reader for the sharpness of the words. When I upgraded from the Touch to the Glow to the Clara HD , I saw the improvements although my eyes got use to it to make it the norm. With the colour screen at the top does it mean the letters aren't as sharp?
As far as the design is concerned why change? What would you change it to? The corners are more rounded and we don't want it circular or longer and skinnier. It does what it's meant to do; hold pages to read.
Love the video! Could you please make a comparison between the Kobo Clara Colour vs. Kobo Libra Colour? Thanks!
As someone used to the clean screen texture of black and white e-reader screens, would you say the screen door effect of the color filter is distracting when reading?
This is something you have to find out for yourself. Some people are annoyed by it, some reports that it's not bothering them. So, I guess this is a personal thing.
Have a smaller b&w Kobo reader about a year old. I see the Clara color and the Libra color both play kobo audio books. Do they also play audiobooks I download from my local library using libby or hoopla? Also, if playing audio books is a primary use does a regular small tablet allow ebook reading and audiobook playing with better web browsing capabilities as an added plus? Currently listen to ebooks downloaded to phone and play in car using libby and hoopla
... thanks for your guidance and your helpful review
I can't wait to see the Pocketbook Era Color review. Also, I would like to see a comparison between Era Color and Kobo Libra Color
We have Eo Color and Era Colour coming after the Kobo stuff
Well, I finally got a chance to try the Clara yesterday at Chapters (Canada). I have to say, the colours are underwhelming to say the least. Also the screen is so dark, requiring a lot of light compare to a BW. IMO, for reading books, a BW is still superior at this point.
I totally agree. I just picked up the Clara and will return it. The colours look very washed out and the screen has to be at least at 80% which will affect the battery life.
At this point, I just wish Amazon would just copy Kobo's color ereaders. I'm too engrossed in the Amazon ecosystem, but there are times, I wish I was not. It takes Amazon a million years to release a new product. For once, I want Amazon to be on the forefront of technology, instead of being a late copycat. Hey Amazon! Just copy this device, okay!? I really like this one.
Amazon copies every single manufacturer
They copied glow light, touch screen, wi-fi, note taking, physical page buttons, etc
Essentially, Amazon hasn't innovated any thing in the e-reader industry, they just simply parrot whatever the industry is doing
So we can expect a color reader from Amazon this Fall?
@goodereader Agreed. Amazon likes to play it (very) safe by not pushing innovation. They just go by the rules of what has already been proven to be working based on other companies' products. But what other companies do not have is Amazon's huge online marketplace for ebooks.
With Kobo finally doing it, inevitable Amazon will do it too.
@@dcpoweredWho needs the marketplace when you can get all the books for free.
Is there any ebook reader that lets you take notes while reading pdfs? I am talking mathematic equations on a separate, empty page that is linked to the current page in the pdf? Preferably with a colored screen
Which version of black-white e-carta would it compare to in terms of contrast?
Really exited that big names are now finally releasing colour Ereader, it's a big bday for the industry put the next biggest day and it will be the biggest is when the first company releases a Gallery 3 Ereader, wow the colour is vastly superior, but maybe we need the next gen that has higher refresh rate first?
This is fantastic step-up in the right direction. I hope the pace of innovation ramps up with e-ink displays so we can get 300 ppi colour screens soon!
Waiting the full review of the libra colour now. Great video
Can you buy like a marvel phisical comic book and same number digital and compare the colors to the printed one when you do color reviews? I want to read a few hundred marvel comics but only if the experience is similar to paper, Thanks!
How's the page refresh speed on a big full color PDF like a Dungeons & Dragons manual or a school textbook or a 200-page color comic? (Obviously text would be small.)
Does Kobo have a page turn animation like Kindle does?
Hey there.
Thanks for all the work.
Sorry for asking though but is there any chance you'll do a review of the Clara BW? If yes, any chance it'll be posted soon?
That's the model I'm the most interested in and I've been waiting to see any review before buying it.
And since you're the only ones who did an unboxing of it...
Thanks again 😊
The review is finalized, it will upload by our team in the next 3 hours
Was excited for Kobo 6inch color until 4:25 mentioned no Google Drive support, stops the video as the rest doesn't matter anymore 😢
Is the screen surface glass or plastic? Do I absolutely need a cover case to protect it in my backpack?
it‘s a matte plastic but quite fragile. yes you absolutely need a case that covers the screen. e-readers can get nicks and at worst crack completely, and since it’s such a niche device repairs can be really hard to find and at worst almost as expensive as just getting a new device. you definitely want to protect it
They spell it with a U because thats how its spelt in English :)
"that's" and "it's" are also spelt like this in English
'You' not 'U' also :)
It took a while, but yes, finally a kobo with color.
Still, I wonder how much it adds long term. How much of a book is in color?
For PDF? Of course, for Manga, yup, for book covers definitely. For text... eeeh?
Thanks for the review!
Looks great, but I'll stick with my Sage until Kobo releases an 8" colour ereader.
Should also mention that the available font faces got a huge update, where paid fonts like Caecilia and Malabar are out and free fonts like Atkinson Hyperlegible and Noto Sans are in. This is likely going to be rolled out to older Kobo devices later on I’d assume.
Would be good to do a more in-depth follow up video from the perspective of a comic book reader. For them Color is a gamechanger and I’m curious about CBR support, support for cbr stores, side loading, aspect ratio and scrolling of large pages with that type of content
First when I saw this on their website, I immediately thought I should upgrade my Clara 2E to this. But now seeing that it's not made in Taiwan like my 2E, no thanks. These are now made in China, which I have a feeling, there will always be something slightly different, both detectable, and undetectable. Plus, being that it's color now, I'd imagine that the battery life will be less than the BW counterpart, I could be wrong. Unless you're reading a lot of manga and really want to see the colored version of the cover pages of each book, what would really be the value add?
I enjoyed seeing the Kobo UI and interactions. The reading stats look great. I'm a kindle/boox user but always interested in what else is going on.
Btw Kobo is not a Canadian company anymore. It was sold to the Japanese firm Rakuten Inc. in 2011.
But the product development team is still based in Canada. Hence why the name "Colour" instead of "Color".
@@dcpowered ... could be. It made me look it up by curiosity. The tablets are made in China and Taiwan. The E ink company and technology is based in Taiwan. I think they own the "kaleido" color/colour technology too.🙃
Ownership change doesnt change nationality of company. Its headquarters & base of operations.
Correct, Kobo is still a Canadian company
@@goodereader I check my recent clara box. It does say "Toronto, Ontario" but the company name is now "Rakuten Kobo Inc". Wondering who has the final words on the tablets production ?
Nice choice of books.
How is the battery life ?
Any plans to do a head-to-head with other non-Kobo colour ereaders? It'd be nice to confirm whether the complainers are right and that the Kobo Colours shouldn't need a backlight, for example, as well all the other normal comparisons. :)
Can you get your own epubs on there some how? Is that what pocket is good for?
Kobo supports epubs natively. No need for pocket. Literally just connect the Kobo to your computer and drag and drop. Or use Calibre application if you want an "iTunes" type of experience
@@Synthwave89 thanks legend!
Please do a video review of the Clara BW
Do you think the Clara Color and BW will fit in Clara 2e cases? So many people want to know!
They look identical to me, but I might be wrong
Why not get a line-up of color e-ink reader showcase?
Let kobo color screen performance serve as the baseline.
Can you compare the colour with Tab mini C?
One uses an os with is end of live the other one does not
Is there any way to really side load books on this?
If it's like previous Kobo, Calibre is great for sideloading, and free.
Can we read colorful comics using this?
I'm really surprised by the performance increase. It it is noticeable faster as the BW versions
Oooh that’s interesting, is it really ? I have a Kobo Aura H2O Edition 2, I believe from 2017 or 2018. Admittedly I have a lot of books on it (5gos out of 8) but what I find annoying now is how slow it is to navigate from book to book or even to change the font and margins. The colour is a great + but I am most of all looking for a Kobo that is faster 😅
Colour is actually the correct historical spelling of the word that has been around for 900 or so years. Color is purely an American adaptation of the language.
Damnit I bought a Clara 2e last year haha
I still wish Kobo would make another Mini. Even more now that they have colour screens.
Does it have text to speech?
I always love your reviews until the end when I'm usually left think, wait, what about ........
You reviewed a colour reader without showing any colour content (apart from the covers) or how it handles PDFs.
There's no difference between a book cover versus a JPEG of a cover of a book, it's the exact same thing and we covered colored content a great deal in this video.
I'm not sure to what you're referring, but there's approximately 5 minutes of color content
And the production team Incorporated multiple b-roll shots at different angles, light intensities, and distances away from the camera
:S
Waiting for the color kobos to come to india.
Great review. I keep thinking these closed ecosystem devices should be given for free or at an substantially lower price. Like a cable box-set
I agree I’m surprised kindle doesn’t throw a basic in with a 2 year sub to unlimited or something, similarly kobo plus and nia. Then could do a decent discount on the more premium models. I’m sure the margins on the subs far outweigh those on the devices themselves.
I really wanted to like Kobo, but their new models have a very funky formatting of sideloaded epubs and I am also confused as to why they don’t make more of an effort to sync sideloaded content like Amazon or pocketreader does.
That's why I would go with a Boox
Never had this problem since I started formatting everything to kepub, which is never really a hassle especially if you use the jazzy site (wink wink) to sideload to your device since it already does it automatically for you with no extra steps. Also, kepub loads faster on kobo devices. The syncing could do with some work, however.
Use Calibre. It converts epubs into Kobo’s format and removes any odd issues with formatting.
@@30secondsflat You also need to install Kobo plugins in Calibre, I some raw epubs didn't work for me either but with the plugins they get converted properly
@@30secondsflatWhat is Kobo's format? I use Calibre.
Wait hang on..... 150ppi? So we take a step backwards to accommodate colour?
300 PPI in black and white, 150 PPI in color
Please do a BW review
We are working diligently on all of these and as quicly as possible
@@goodereader i know and thank you for that, a comparison between BW and Libra 2 would be appreciated.
@@weabooavatar399 as well as the libra colour
Does it have google play?
None of the big three manufacturers have Google play, no :(
Really good that they can spell properly, would have been great if it was made of aluminium as well. I’m guessing the colour works Beyer because it’s spelt properly.
What’s the point in a colour e-reader when the inside of a book is generally b/w.
Nothing
Depends on the book you're reading
I know they aren't the sexiest things, but battery life and storage space are always the things that I look for most.
Btw colour is couleur in French. Colour is the correct English spelling.
"Colour" in countries that use British English, such as India, Australia, and Canada,
While countries that use American English, such as the Philippines...and America, use the spelling "color."
@pbft.j yes I know but he was claiming the use of colour with a u on the box was out of the ordinary (as if we were all from Canada) and that it was French because of bilingual rules in Canada. It's not. Colour in French is Couleur as I stated.
It's so sad that Gallery 3 is dead.
I bought this, it’s my first one because I wanna do a digital library and get rid of all my physical books, but when you said it’s repairable does that mean you can increase the GB? And is there a way to remove the refresh feature or like reduce it?🤨🤨🤨🤨
But Amazon is the only one proposing a reader (the basic one) without a white agressive front logo. The black logo on the front of the Kindle basic 2022 is no-distractive at all, on the contrary of every other readers.
Looks nice but just like the others no micro SD card no thanks. If I buy something like this for my personal comic book collection not for books
Bring back live streams
Haha
You know, we might actually bring at least one of them back to go over what's been going on in the industry lately
But they won't be weekly anymore :(
Way too small for me.
I need a colored Kindle 😫
At 2030, bro
We are not wondering why it's spelled with a "u". That's the way you spell it ;-) It's called English.
Well he skips dictionaries and language settings (and I needed to see those, they’re a plus compared to Kindle). He’s all American and only American 😂
1:18 I wish these reviewers would stop complaining about solid functional design of electronic devices and "excitement", that's how we get features that most users DON'T WANT!!! but manufacturers make them because of constant moaning. If something works perfectly then leave it alone. There's no need to reinvent the wheel with every iteration.
Okay cool
I'm a little sad, I bought the clara 2e not two months ago. I hadn't heard this was coming out until very recently.
Yeah, really great review of COLOR reader without single comic book page 🫥
