  • The Rakuten Kobo Libra Colour is likely one of the best e-readers and e-notebooks on the market. It utilizes the latest generation E INK Kaleido 3 e-paper technology, which makes the screen vibrant. There are several major selling points behind this new device. It has a 35% larger battery than the previous generation, Libra 2; it has physical page-turn buttons, Google Drive, and Dropbox to access cloud storage and capability with the Kobo Pencil 2 to conduct highlights and write notes in ebooks.

    I received my Kobo Libra colour today, and I love it! I didn't order the stylus as I already have the generation one stylus that works with the Elipsa and the Sage. I tried using it on my new Libra Colour and it works. I'm not sure why yours didn't work, but mine definitely does!

    This is very good, overall high quality review on many points. But I think you missed the main technical point, the question everyone want to know about the eink display (which is the main "feature" of an e-reader). How the Kobo Colour screen color in BW compared with the Kobo BW. What is the tradeoff with this color e-ink display compared with BW (let's say, the Kobo BW to get a kobo vs kobo with the same software in background). How dark is the background side by side with a Kobo BW? Do we see the color layer added lines? What brightness settings to set on the Colour to get as confortable as a Carta 1300? in dark room, artificial light and sun? is it even possible to achieve it?
    I read a lot of BW ebooks on my current Kindle 3, and few physical manga. I'm ready to loose a little bit of confort in BW to be able to read colored manga, but no video show what we loose in BW.

    I've just bought one. I come from a Kobo forma and have to say the advance is huge: better refresh, a more even light, better overall speed. I like the addition of color, especially when it comes to highlighting. I also have a Scribe and I'd say the feel of the pen is halfway between an iPad and the Scribe itself - which is way better - but it's a good compromise, for sure. I do find it useful to have a 'pocket size' ereader that's also good for taking notes. For those who wonder what it feels like when it comes to reading in B/W: yes, it does change a bit. It's a bit darker with no light on - but still very crisp - and it does feel like looking at a different type of screen, more similar to an LCD, maybe, with the light on. That is just MHO, but still. One should try and see it live to really understand if it fits one's needs. However more similar to a different kind of screen, keep in mind we're still talking about an ereader, with no direct light toward the eyes. For me, it's a yes! I love it! Great review, as always! 🎉

      Same, best of all, after some googling, any stylus which supports mpp works for notetaking/annotating etc. so to my surprise, my unused work laptop stylus actually has a use now since it supports mpp.. ^_^ better than unnecessarily shilling out £80 on just a better magnetically fitting stylus..
      Compared with the forma which I've had for a year, the front lighting is night and day in terms of evenness and doesn't exhibit that band of light down next to the buttons that forma has. And the colour array filter adds a subtle perception of grain.

    • @BERO73
      @BERO73 Před 29 dny

      @@riceshot9981 yeah, that band of dark light next to the buttons is awful. I even had mine replaced after I got my preorder back when the forma was released as I thought it was faulty but then I realised that's how they came. As to that grainy feeling, it doesn't bother me at all. Makes it look like a sheet of very porous paper and sort of makes it look more paperlike to me.

    Very nicely detailed review. I have a question about the highlighting feature. Is there an easy way to export the highlighted text (like if you want to compile a document of key messages from a book)? If so, do the exported highlights retain the colour you used? I haven't had much luck finding a good tutorial for previous Kobos. Thanks!

    Amazing that it has all this integration right out of the box. I am deep in kindle and find great value in KU but a bit jealous of kobo, especially writing on the page. The pen leaves a bit to be desired (I don't think it is EMR?) and colour isn't for me so I am keen to see what other things come up with carta 1300 and wacom in future. I appreciated this demo and it gives a good vibe of the device.

    Just received mine.
    The answer to THE question is: For colored manga, this Libra Colour is awsome, really. But there is a MASSIVE tradeoff, compared to any BW e-reader, when talking about BW quality.
    Tested outside with natural light, inside with artificial light, and in completely dark room: For BW novel, my 2019 Kindle 10, 167ppi, no warm light, is far, far, better. And even my Kindle 3 from 2010, is better outside with natural light...
    I'll keep it because I have a lot of colored manga to read, but I already know I'll get the Clara BW (or the next 6" Kindle, if they put Carta 1300 inside) when I'll go back to novel.

    I think the repairability might be what converts me. I am not a huge enviornmentalist by any means, but I do love the idea of less intentional waste. Being able to repair instead of rebuy things makes sense, when a lot of those same companies who have the rebuy model are always touting climate change at us. I like the longevity of an investment.
