I had never heard this story before, and it truly shocks me. How can this not be considered premeditated murder? One day, the one boy feels provoked by the other, and the next day he brings a loaded gun to school (and how did that happen) and shoots the boy who provoked him. It would have been bad enough if he'd beaten him up. Saying he didn't know what he was doing doesn't work for me. A 14-year-old knows the difference between right and wrong. Wow. Unbelievable. May Larry rest in peace, and I pray that Brandon seeks forgiveness for his actions. And, may or society truly learn to love and tolerate one another.

He could have easily just punched him in front of his classmates and made his point. My guess is he was embarrassed and went home and festered on it and got madder by the hour. In any case, Larry didn’t deserve to die and this really is a sad and tragic story.

Murder is murder. The killer was 15 years old. Most know right from wrong at that age. This was very wrong, on so many levels. Premeditated also. All he had to do was just say no thanks Larry, I can’t and won’t be your Valentine. It’s not possible. Move on. I feel sorry for both families, but I certainly don’t side with the teen murderer.

Thanks, Steve, for bringing this story to your viewers. Like you, I had not heard anything about this tragedy despite it making it national headlines. You are very correct about the world being upside down and that it appears that there is no justice most of the time. This reminds me of the 1995 Jenny Jones episode in which Jonathan Schmitz murdered Scott Amedure for claiming to have a crush on him. Schmitz was paroled after serving 20 years for a prison term of 25 to 50 years. Have you visited Scott Amedure's grave?

    • @TheGraveyardChannel

I remember London, Ontario's very own Jenny Jones. Mo Collins from MADtv could do her perfectly. Anyways, Jonathan Schmitz was from Lake Orion, MI, a bedroom community of Detroit. Today it is 95% white and that was probably higher in 1995. It's a part of Oakland County, which is 77% white and the 21st most wealthy county in the country.
A senseless and heartbreaking murder happened. If I do a show on gay crushes on people who are not gay and I select "surprisees" in 1995 from places that vote for Democrats who might as well be Republicans, do I care about my gay guests or do I really only care about topping Jerry Springer? We can't help who we get crushes on. Wisdom says we reveal our feelings of this kind only when they may be welcomed. Sadly, when we opt for blind dates, we never think we're at the mercy of the ethics and tastes of our host. Gay or straight, if you reveal your fondness for an Evangelical Trump voting neanderthal with two pitties chained to the double wide, it is entirely possible that you may be hit with more than the bouquet of flowers you presented them. In the meantime, take care of yourself and each other.

I’m an Australian and heard about this over here when it happened, for some reason I thought it was longer than 2008. The answer to the question was justice served, is NO. He blatantly walked up behind him and shot him in the back of the head. We can’t have anyone walking up to someone and shooting them because they don’t like what the person has said, its outrageous.
Sorry if I offend people but the gun laws also finally need to be changed over there. People always say guns don’t kill, people kill but that’s ridiculous of course the gun kills in the wrong hands. The amount of shootings over there proves it. My kids are grown now but it’s not something that was ever a thought here. Our households just don’t have guns. Thanks for sharing his story. ❤️Jodie 🇦🇺

    • @ericv1989

This Visiting Gravesites With Steve episode reminded me of how TV used to explain common sense, especially to kids. What would Mike Brady, who was played by the late Robert Reed, say? Why is it wrong to out people as gay that you know aren't gay, especially if they're on the football team, look mean, and probably use performance enhancing substances, which never mixes well with a daily diet of beer and marijuana? For starters, you're taking a pleasure in the anti-gay bullying he is almost definitely to be on the receiving end of. Isn't that like those goofballs who start rumors about pretty girls to give them a slut rep so that with a bit of luck, they'll have to fight off a rape attempt? (Then I'd put on the single My Boyfriend's Back which sounds so much like My Boyfriend's Black, LMAO.)
Since Larry King would never be killed on a Brady Bunch episode, I think Mr. Brady would finish it by saying, "You're just lucky that football player threw a football at your nose. If he had issues with his own gay tendencies, you could very well be dead right now."

It's amazing how a person's sexuality or ethnicity can marginalize them in the eyes of justice. It's incredible how often the "Gay Panic" defense was successfully used after a straight asshole decided to kill someone of the same sex or transgender, who, heaven forbid, found them attractive in some way. To think there are countries where gay people can be put to death simply for being gay - it's utterly heartbreaking. Apparently the father of the boy who killed Larry was found dead of blunt force trauma to the head about a year after this happened...alcoholic accident I believe.
As for Larry provoking the other boy...I mean, he asked to be his Valentine! He didn't ask for a blow job in the middle of the class. Incredible to me that ANYONE would think that question was somehow provocation enough for what happened. I could totally see them beating Larry up...that seems like the normal ridiculous teenage reaction. But to pull out a gun and shoot him in the back of the head in CLASS? Over being asked to be a VALENTINE? Wow.

Brandon's anger was about more than just the Valentine's proposal. Larry had been embarrassing him with sexual taunts for an extended period before Brandon retaliated. Sexual harassment is wrong period, not just when it's done by straight males. Not remotely a justification for killing someone but a bloody nose or black eye wouldn't have been beyond reason, especially, as this video points out, Larry knew his advances were unwelcome, meaning the killing can only be explained partially as a hate crime.

Wow steve, this is really a emotionally complex problems. But I guess to me, wrong is still wrong and no one has the right to take another man's life in a horrendous way. Thanks for sharing, I had never heard of this case. Have a great day!

This is heart wrenching. I don't understand how justice was not served properly for young Larry. Larry's life style should not have even come into play and how could they say it was not premeditated when the other young man brought a gun into school with the purpose of shooting Larry. Thank you for taking a stand for the LGBT community.

This is just crushing. Regardless of age, regardless of provocation, regardless of home life, you do not shoot someone in the head far asking you to be their valentine. Would everyone have sided with the killer if he’d shot a girl for asking him to be her valentine? No.

It just breaks my heart when I hear of another senseless act of violence, especially with someone dying from it. And what a sad commentary that everyone was feeling so much sympathy and compassion for Larry's killer versus for Larry. This is the first I have heard about this story. One of the commenters here mentioned the documentary of it is on Amazon Prime so I'm definitely going to watch it. Thank you for sharing this with us, Steve...

Thanks for sharing this story, Steve; I hadn't heard about this before watching your video. The irony is that the "jock", with his alpha-male, homophobic attitude, will forever be linked to a person whose lifestyle, evidently, repulsed him. Rest in peace, Larry. 💔

There was a similar case to this some time ago, a TV show I can't remember the name of but it's popular in the US it was about secret admirers and a guy who was a guest was told that he had an admirer. The admirer was called out from backstage and turned out to be a guy, the guest later tracked him down and shot him. I can't remember what the name of the show was it was hosted by a lady but it was a big story at the time in the US

Incredible story and a very competent presentation by your good self. I wonder if Brandon had not killed Larry/Latisha for the Valentine invitation, if he would have killed someone else for some other reason. Two very at risk adolescents colliding in a terrible way. Brandon had a lot to answer for and I suspect his father also has a lot to answer for.

Honestly no one needs to loose their lives because of a choice they make no matter what that choice is. In todays society we need to educate and celbrate our choices and learn to love and not hate so much. Division in society is just wrong! Cant we all just get along. Thanks for this video Steve.
