  • The name Ted Bundy inspires nothing but fear and anger in the hearts of Americans, but for Edna Cowell Martin, the serial killer was her kind, gregarious cousin during her formative years. When the truth about his despicable crimes finally came to light, she was barely able to believe it. Now, after 50 years of remaining as anonymous as possible, she's finally ready to talk about life with Ted.
Edna reveals to Piers Morgan multiple instances where she saw the mask drop and Ted's cold heartless psyche came to the fore. She even explains that on one occasion while driving him in her car, she mentally prepared herself to crash the vehicle if Ted tried anything. Now in her new book 'Dark Tide: Growing Up With Ted Bundy', anyone can find out what is was like coming of age in the shadow of America's most notorious serial killer.
    00:58 - Introduction
01:30 - What’s it like to be related to Ted Bundy?
06:00 - "He would come by my apartment frequently"
06:27 - "He wrote a pamphlet on rape prevention for women"
07:00 - "His eyes had gone cold black”
10:18 - “we were all terrified, terrified of my cousin and I didn’t even know it”
13:17 - “He could lie so easily”
15:00 - Edna recalls the moment she realised her cousin was a murderer
    21:45 - Bundy’s execution
27:40 - Criticism for 'profiting' off Bundy’s crimes
31:28 - "I still care about the Ted Bundy I knew, but horrifically despised the Ted Bundy he became"
33:00 - Do you feel lucky that you’re still alive?

i lived in Renton and because of my divorce needed to hitchhike to 3 jobs in seattle to buy a car. I had been speaking to Seattle Crisis Clinic ---- nice man, good counselor(Ted Bundy) I set out to grab a ride and a tan vw came up and when the door was opened, a nice (looking) man smiled and asked if i needed a ride! I had my hand on the open door when i realized the door DIDNT have a door handle!!! if i had gotten in the car, i couldnt have opened the door to get out! so i declined the ride from Ted--- all people knew was his first name, and realized later it was Bundy! An animal's instincts aren't always true. I am a big animal person and have always had all sorts of pets all of my life. Animals have been calm around me, but there have been a few times when someone's pet was not friendly with me. My aunt's cat was mean and on gaurd in attack mode around me, and so is my best friend's dog. I am not the only one they are in attack mode with though. A part of it is just their personality and/or something that had happened to them in the past perhaps.
If a dog were to be going totally bonkers, like Ted's cousin had said her dog was doing, that would alert me too because that is more than just not liking the person, that is detecting something that very off.

I was a gas station clerk at Gulf in the early/mid 70s, and I remember Ted coming in and getting gas several times. Most times, he came in and seemed like he was charming, good with words, and good natured, and I thought “what a good looking guy”. Then, one time in April 1973, he came in and had a stone cold look on his face. He paid for gas, and some sort of food, and was staring out the window at a group of women. He left the store, and I watched him stare at them while he was sitting in his car, and he slowly drove off, with the creepiest look on his face. I will NEVER forget that look. Stone black eyes. Just like she stated. It’s unreal how he “masked” his true identity.

A tall, slender man with dark wavy hair got out and started walking towards me calling out. "Susie? Susie?" (Not my name.) I froze. I wanted to run across the highway, but it was four lanes. They would either just check in on a weekend or a few nights a week, if they wanted to get it all over with. The gate to the jail yard had a sign “thank you come again” posted on the outside. Ted Bundy’s cell was underneath the caregivers apartment, which he cut through the ceiling of his cell to the extra bedroom and escaped that way. Our social studies class visited our country offices (courthouse, county offices, jail house were all one building) when we went past his jail cell, he smiled at our class.
