I was visiting Cave Hill Cemetery in Louisville, Kentucky this afternoon and when I went to leave, I found that they had locked me in. Seriously. This is no joke. It really happened. The sign on the gate said that if we locked you in, here is the number to call the Louisville Police department to let you out.
I panicked a little at first, but I finally got out. I found a room for the night at the Super 8 by the airport, near downtown Louisville. The hotel and room are very nice and much nicer than spending the night in a cemetery.
Thanks for joining me today on another raod trip down memory lane and for sharing the memories!

What is truly pathetic is the need for a security guard at a cemetery, people have no respect for the living or dead...

You should be annoyed, there’s no reason that should’ve happened. I’ve been to Cave Hill - it’s a very massive cemetery so I can see how someone could get missed. That said, cemeteries like that should have electronic gates with sensors you pull your car up to get out - it opens and closes automatically. That is what I’ve seen around yet some of the larger cemeteries --like at my last stop in Utah, Provo City Cemetery as an example. If you get locked in, you just pull up to the gate and it opens by itself.
I would think Cave Hill would be able to afford something like that, that’s a pretty well funded massive cemetery.

I was thinking the same thing Ron. Or if it’s that important for them to leave at 4:45 on the dot instead of spending the money on a sign to call the police when they lock you in on purpose they should spend the money on a VERY LARGE SIGN with their hours to tell you how serious they are about closing on time with no exceptions. My guess is that they are annoyed by how many people ignore or don’t know about closing time so they figure they will just lock people in and teach them a lesson so they won’t do it again. I can’t think of any other serious reason why they would do what they did. They also have very poor signage telling you how to get to the exit gates. I drove around for 10 minutes before I could even find the gates to get out. Can you imagine closing a store like Walmart when it’s time to leave and not bothering to make sure all the customers have left? And then putting a sign on the sliding glass door to call the police to let you out if we locked in? Or any other business for that matter? Omg 😂

My ex husband was a gravedigger at the Dudley Park Cemetery, Adelaide SA and they were all a a end of year Christmas Party at a hotel so I was asked to lock the gates at 6.30pm for them. I was 8.5 months pregnant at the time and I looked the place over after waddling around in the dark and could see nobody left. I had just locked the final gate when I saw headlights turn on. Someone was still inside. He abused the hell out of me even though the closing times are clearly marked and by this time it was almost 7pm. Was tempted to leave him locked in for the night.

Like your situation, I never saw any park staff telling people it was close to closing time. It can be a very frustrating feeling. Between coyotes watching you that one time and now this, I just want to say we really appreciate what you do for us. Have a great day, my friend. Blessings - Judith 🎵🎭

As a retired Park Ranger I have closed gates and locked buildings at closing many times. I always drove the park roads to make sure all visitors were out. When vehicles were unattended and no one about, all I could do was lock up. I tried to return later, but my patrol area took me over hundreds of miles of road. I will say I always waited at least 15 min after closing to lock up.

In some southern California cemeteries he wouldn't have to worry about being alone. He'd have homeless people for company. In Forest Lawn he'd have coyotes. I saw a litter of coyote puppies running around at Forest Lawn Glendale. Mother wasn't in sight and they were afraid of people. No homeless people in Forest Lawn. That only happens in old cemeteries with broken fences in bad neighborhoods.

This is unbelievable. I’ve been to cemeteries who lock the gate, but have an electric gate for those still in the cemetery so you’re not locked in. Cave Hill is a great cemetery, but this is awful. And in my home state. We would give you a lot more hospitality over in the eastern part of the state. I drove three hours to cave hill a few months ago, got there and they were closed. Said the roads were too bad. Im like, I drove through the hills to get here and you’re closed in the city? Lol. We need to make a video about our road stories.

Moreover if you spend a lot of time visiting graveyards, you're bound to get locked in one or two over the years. Stands to reason.
At least you're safe Steve! Lol
Joking apart, I thought they'd be a concerted effort to make sure visitors aren't locked in. Alternatively a massive big sign at the entrance with opening hours may have been more appropriate and indeed useful.

I got locked inside a mausoleum! Last year while visiting Hollywood forever cemetery. I was pleasantly surprised to see the mausoleum in the Jewish section open on Saturday the Sabbath. Turns out workers were just accessing a storage room and when they were done they just locked up! I could not believe they didn't check to make sure nobody was in there. There was no phone number to call, we yelled and nobody came. We ended up finding a small wooden door in the back wall that was unlocked and opened up onto a construction yard.

I snuck off to a spot nobody goes. I slept the day away and woke up at 5, I remember looking at my watch and half the cemetery to walk to get out. It was winter so it was getting dark. I have no aversion being in a cemetery at night but it’s easy to lose your way or get hurt. I made the front gate just as the caretaker was walking away. This was the early 90s so no cell phones. Whoa! Where I live in Ohio (and across the state line in Indiana) most cemeteries close at dusk. That seems to be smarter to me. Other than less than savory individuals who are up to no good, most people with loved ones on the grounds or who are doing genealogy will be out of there before dark. If the security guards did periodic sweeps of the grounds, there shouldn't be many problems such as you had.
As a point of interest, many of the cemeteries and graveyards my family is in are not fenced or walled in, and there are no gates. Maybe an entrance with posts and a sign but that's it.
Glad it's the time of year when it's still light at 5:00. I think I'd be more afraid of the living than the dead in a cemetery!

OMG! That was crazy! That tiny little reference to closing time was barely visible on that sign! I'm not surprised that you didn't see it. Two security guards roaming around that ginormous cemetery are clearly not enough to ensure all visitors are out before closing. I'm glad the groundskeeper was so close by to let you out before it got dark and creepy! ⚰💀👻⚰

Ha, that's funny, but don't feel bad. I got locked in at Evergreen Cemetery in Los Angeles. Their closing time was 5:00 pm also. I headed to the gate about 4:50 and the gates were locked. Crazy. I then noticed I wasn't the only person locked in as there were four other cars behind me. I know you've visited Evergreen so you know it's a pretty big cemetery. What security does is around 15 minutes before closing security locks the gate and they make their rounds informing visitors and mourners that they're closing. We were locked in about 15 minutes before security returned and unlocked the gates to let us out. I was kinda disappointed because I was looking forward to taking some sunset photos in the cemetery if I was going to be locked in.

Hello Steve glad you got out that would be little scary. Not your fault they should have a sign that’s big enough so everyone can see it. Stay safe out there and a great day 😊

It wasn't a cemetery, but a family friend once got locked in a university library overnight. He was in the seldom-used microfilm room on the bottom floor. Like you, he misunderstood the closing time because it had recently changed. No employee thought to see if anyone was in the microfilm room and they all went home. This was well before the days of cellphones. Luckily he had access to a restroom. Once he realized the situation, he figured there was nothing he could do about it, so he just continued with his research and eventually fell asleep in his chair. He was more amused than angry about what had happened.
