This is a great episode. I’m a WW2 nut. There are some really cool finds. People need to come off the mountain when it comes to German/Nazi war relics. Cause one displays these type of artifacts doesn’t make you a Nazi or support a Nazi cause. It is history plain and simple. I served in the army overseas in Germany in the 80s and had the pleasure to tour a lot of the battle sites. What an amazing walk thru battleground history.

Our world history teacher (10th grade, 1963) brought to school - can you imagine - a matching pair of Lugers with pearl grips, in somewhat worn leather holsters. Mr. Carter was maybe 5'8" and 155 labs, late 40s-early 50s. Serious, wore glasses, head track coach. When we excitedly asked how he got them, he told us he took them from a German officer. "He didn't need them any more" was all he said.... He had a son in the same grade IIRC. Certainly in high school at the same time so 10th, 11th or 12th grade. I hope they're still in the family.

In an aircraft a wide variety of electromagnetic fields act on the direction indicator of the compass due to the drive, radio and many other technical systems. It’s necessary to install the compass in the aircraft in a special way. For this reason, there is the mother (master) and daughter compass system.
The mother compass was permanently installed in the fuselage of the aircraft, usually behind the seat of the pilot. It consisted of a largely vibration-free and suspended liquid-damped magnetic compass. The non-magnetic housing of the compass was made of Bakelite, an early form of plastic. It was possible to attach small magnetic pins to this housing to compensate for the compass. This was done on so-called compensating discs.
The compass indicator was electrically tapped and transferred to the daughter compass in the pilot’s instrument panel. A mother compass can theoretically have any number of daughter compasses, as is used on large watercraft as well as on larger aircraft.

I have a healthy respect and interest in items like these and the stories behind them. I had relatives that served in WWII and they brought back their share of souvenirs.
My father in law was stationed outside of Munich at the end of the war in Europe and whenever they had spare time, they would go to Birchesgaden and visit the Berghoff and Eagle's Nest along with the other homes in the area. He claimed to have liberated some doorknobs and other structural items from the Berghoff. He thought he left them behind when he divorced his second wife and moved out but wasn't sure. I have his paperwork, including his declaration sheet with his bringbacks, but it wasn't very specific, just things like badges and belt buckles.
I know there is still a footlocker in his attic with some of his father's WWI items and perhaps some of his WWII items. It's been offered to me, but I am waiting for his other surviving daughter to come back in town so she can be present when it's opened.
I also have scanned his photo books and there are pictures of him standing in front of the Berghoff. He's gone but lives on through these items and the pictures he took.
    Thanks for the video 👍

He did 22 years in the AC and then into the USAF in 1947 coming out in 1964. I was born in 1960 when my dad was 38. My father passed in 2001. He never spoke much of his time in the military, though he was in every country we had troops in Europe during WWII and was in Korea and the beginning of VNam. I have a pic of him in his uniform during WWII under the clear blotter on my desk right now. Funny, interested in history as I have always been I never really questioned him much about his WWII service.. Then about 5 yrs after he passed I gained a great interest in all of WWII. I realize now what a treasure of first hand source information I grew up with and never utilized in his time with us. He was a great father and I loved him dearly but now I have a million questions and no way to ask of course. It's sad to watch what is happening to this country and see the parallels to Nazi Germany Ca. 1936. I am just glad all those men of the Greatest Generation who are mostly gone, don't have to see what they fought and sweated and died for, our Freedoms, being taken away from us by inbred treasonous communists on our own shores. @@samdown1914 It depends on when they were collected...up through the 80's with study it was easy to dodge fakes...I know I had a ton of it.Michigan state university had so much donated up through the 90's that they wouldnt accept donations from veterans..I know I was there.I think these are legit.

Maybe the correct action would be to try and find the family of the soldiers KIA and return their paybooks. I'm sure they would appreciate having a momento of their relatives war time service.

    Great video.
I’m the son of a Polish Catholic Army veteran and a Jewish mother from Vienna Austria.
I was al.so interested in World War Two history that I collected a lot of German hats and helmets back in the 1970’s.
My father found them and hit the ceiling. He fought the Germans in Warsaw and France and hated them all his life and who can blame him. My mother escaped Vienna but her mother and 23 family members were murdered by the Germans.
I got rid of most of the items but my father liked a German SS helmet I had that has shrapnel holes in it.I still have that helmet. I think there’s nothing wrong collecting these items ,it’s history that was a terrible period and you look at these items and see that the people that enjoyed these items ( the Germans) were responsible for terrible crimes, so it’s important to learn from these items and also honor the Veterans that saved us and destroyed the German and Japanese empires. Those men are certainly part of the Greatest Generation. They saved us.

There's a great documentary about a guy who returned a samurai sword back to the family that his father had taken after WW2. The Japanese soldier had died a few years before it and the family was beside themselves when the sin gave it back. It was interesting to see how he traced it back to the soldier's family.
