The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

This is better than this year's superbowl show!!!

50 years ago I said, "What a voice!"
Hearing this today-- "What a voice!"
Peter Rivera is Rare Earth. 🎹
Great , he filled everything thing
I said the exact same thing to someone several months back - probably about the same time you posted your comment.
good voice, questionable lyrics
I agree. Check out the video of him on the Mike Huckabee show. He is about 75 years old and his voice and his drumming are exactly the same. Not affected by age one bit. Really quite an amazing video. Check it out . . .
Rare Earth were total badass. Funky, soulful...just a damn underrated band.
psychedelic cool
WERD!
Grew up listening to Rare Earth, Bob Seger, and Alice Cooper, my hometown.
thats because Rare Earth is a pure motown sound band!!! you can hear their bases and rythmys comes from afro american mucisians
Motown's ONLY all white band money-maker.
What a voice what a talented band what a song
There is no way to resist this song. Once he starts singing, it draws you in and takes over. What a masterpiece! I have to say the ice rink setting is probably the most unusual presentation I've ever seen. LOL! Only Ed Sullivan could combine ice skating and psychedelic rock!!
I personally consider this a rather stupid idea (referring to those ice skater dancers).
Another “hallmark” of the show’s final season in which they were grasping at straws to keep the show alive given it had slipped to #47 in the ratings ….
THEY PUT RARE EARTH in a little bar in kansas city,i bought front row seats 4 foot away and jammed all night, there were hundreds of people from all over the neighborhood dancing in the streets and even the cops were dancing, what a nite, what a band---------RARE EARTH
Go Chiefs!
@@biggerduke hell yeah
I've seen Rare Earth twice in Kansas City, 81 & 82 I think. Uptown Theater. 81 was the 1st performance in their return tour, and Pete Rivera actually sounded green and restrained. 82 tour he was back in full as he was in any of his 70's tours.
@@davekinghorn9567 i was there they rocked as usual,RARE EARTH IS ON ANOTHER LEVEL
Rare Earth Rocks
Dude is a powerful singer...
lol yes
That drummers voice is awesome
Powerful, rangy, masculine
It always amazed me that Sullivan would put acts on his show that had no relevance to his own values and tastes. But he knew what was popular and what the audience wanted. He was the greatest showman since Ziegfeld.
Sullivan had great talent coordinators. One was Vince Calandra, who booked many of the musical groups, including the Beatles. There are interviews with him on youtube.
yes he knew talent and he knew what the younger generation liked. he was a very good businessman that way . good instincts
oh yeah blue eyed soul. back in the day.
Observant
Sullivan's ratings went sky high after he started having rock and roll acts on his show. While they may not have been his cup of tea I think he realized times and tastes were changing in the late 1950s and throughout the 60s. so he went along and had many acts on his show.
Ed Sullivan really had some amazing acts on his show. I’ve heard this song many times, but until now, I’ve never seen it done on ice in the middle of a troupe of confused-looking skaters wearing purple and green fright wigs.
I love it!
These guys are a great example of good old kick ass rock and roll. Back when people got on stage and played their instruments with feeling, that feeling went out into the audience. That's what's missing in a lot of current music.
# 1 Rare Earth fan here but there may be a few new kids on the block that still play arse kicking rock n roll. They’re not Rare Earth Style but still make me play them over and over and they are: Black Stone Cherry and Joyous Wolf doing a very impressive versions
of Mountains Mississippi Queen. There might be some new light at the end of tunnel for old rockers like us. I always listen to bands incorporate their own versions of time less hits, most fail. These two bands are “ NO JOKE “ I’m 71 yrs old still playing guitar professionally, I’ve seen em all. These guys are great
@@patrickclune3600There r some solid young 60s-70s musicians carrying on our music. Some haven't been heard about nationally yet, but they're out there on the rising Sun's horizon.
I know of 1 n Nashville area who's a recording & mastering engineer, song writer, arranger, AND 1 of THE BEST guitarist of old school R&R. Cut from GFR to Beatles to Santana to Ted Nugent moulds.

Just checked out black stone 👍👍👍thnx man
one of the top ten voices in rock history.
ROCK and ROLL HALL of FAME Legends 2022.
The live version of this is Exceptional.....
This IS the exceptional live version! WTF?
It's a pantomime of the song, they're not really playing, but idgaf really this song is so badass@@Mister8224
Everything they did was phenomenal. 2:30 am and im burning the house Down Bit**!!!!
Great voice! Classic song.
Rare Earth was my first concert. Kentucky Derby Festival 1972. Sugarloaf opened for them.
He has a really great voice. 🙂
Can we all admit and accept.. THEY were better than current music?
Guess not. You're not getting any love with your comment. I'm with you though.
Yes, cause it's True!!
Well, it's my Opinion! We have to respect the taste of the today's Jouth.
Gotta love it. Rare Earth & Ice skaters...
Roller skating
Best version of this song
Officially the most far out performance I've ever seen on Ed Sullivan! (With Vanilla Fudge being the heaviest). Had no idea he allowed such a grandiose production as this.
Almost from the beginning, rock and roll put his ratings thru the roof. His show might not have lasted as long had he not put rock acts on. I think Sullivan knew times were changing and he simply was a good sport about it and went along with it
I totally agree. That Vanilla Fudge show was epic!!!
@@jonboll-LGM she and Ed were dating?😉
I've always loved the music of Peter Rivera and Rare Earth. Have their first album. So glad Peter is still making fabulous music!
His voice, today, still sounds pretty damn good! He has a page on FB.
@@billj8148 He did a remake of I Just Want To Celebrate in 2005 for the Samuel L. Jackson movie The Man. It's pretty awesome!
What group is Peter playing with ? Is it a regular band or a Rare Earth type band ? A big thank you to anyone that can hopefully answer this question. As far as his voice is concerned it was the most powerful in his era and probably still today. No screeching, screaming or gimmicks, just pure, plain unadulterated rock n roll. A drummer that could belt it out and still keep perfect time. A rarity then and non-existant today.
That powerhouse voice and music rocked my AM radio!
Saw them on the Ecology tour. Simp,y amazing
Peter Rivera told me once that he was within seconds of missing His cue on Ed Sullivan to get on stage. He told me he was going to the bathroom when the stations were already pushing the risers out on stage for the performance. They were knocking on the bathroom door going “Peter, get the hell out there you’re supposed to be on stage now!” Riviera literally had to run across the ice and jump onto the riser before the song started. Like literally seconds before the song started
They seem to come to town every 6 months, not so rare
Nice story 💯🎸🧘
Lol..
Look like high performing peter!
Which one is he?
I played the hell out of this 45 as a kid.
I like how the guitarist used the wah pedal. I really felt this song ✌
wish that guitarist was up front, some badass work.
It was very well used in the recording but you don't see one in this video which tells you something.
This video with Peter Rivera is one of my all time favorites on CZcams, and when it disappeared from my Favorites, I was devastated. I'm so happy to see it back here under the Ed Sullivan Show CZcams channel. The Ed Sullivan Show is a very happy childhood memory and I will look forward to seeing more from here as well.
Look for the 11 minute extended version
I have seen Rare Earth at least 4 times in the early 70s. They were the opening act for most of the head-liners back in the day. However, they were just as bad ass. I used to play this song in my past cover bands over the years and its still a groovy song.
Saw them open for Sly and the Family Stone at Madison Square Garden. Of course, Sly was late so this opening band got to play over an hour instead of the usual 40 minutes. Of course, they could run “I’m Losing You” for 20+ minutes, which they did. Ditto for “Get Ready.”
I saw them in 73 or 74, Spokane Wa Coliseum. They were the headline act, I don't recall who opened. I lived just a few blocks from the venue back then, saw a lot of good bands.
Brought the Beatles on, launched many a career. Replaced the Sunday night church ritual..
@@vandalsgarageis the Boone barn still up? Thought it was gonna collapse @ a Chiefs game in 1992
Farout man!
Have everything they ever recorded. The live Hey Big Brother is a favorite.
I was hooked to Rare Earth in the 60 ´s , used to listen to them in the morning before going to school, they were part of my b.... NO, they WERE my breakfast....
Drove many a mile listening !!!!!!
Ah, the late 60's early 70's. What a time. Rare Earth is awesome!
Incredible vocals and sound.
I was 1 day old when this video was done.
Rare Earth did an excellent job at recreating some Motown classics
Corny cover band. And worse, a minstrel Show. 👎
A realy great Band Rare Earth, i love this Song and special the Song "Get Ready" Live, it's uuuuuh wow! And His playing on the Drums - i love IT! All Members of the Band are great👏🏼👏🏼✨!
I so remember Rare Earth. Just keeps getting better.
Rare Earth was on the Motown label. Great Band!
Some of the most underrated music talent ever created in America... Drummer was unreal Good..🇺🇸
My first live show I think 72 or 73 don't remember but I do remember I was a kid and I wanted to know who was singing and when I saw who was singing , it blew my mind because I didn't know how he could play drums and sing at the same time I was young
Love the Phyllis Diller dancers.
HAHAHAHAHA!
Sullivan's final season on the air. When rock and roll came along and he started having such acts on his shows in 1956 his ratings shot thru the roof.
Lead singer Peter Rivera was recently on Mike Huckabee's show and his voice hasn't changed much in 53 years. A gift for sure. This is rock and roll how we remember it.
Later this song would reach #7 on the Billboard charts.
My friend's brother loved Rare Earth and their grandpa got corporate tickets. So, I saw them more than once and in pretty much the front row in the early 70s. They were great. Audience was mixed, and I got one of their drum sticks!
Peter Rivera on lead vocals.
What a performance. It was back when so many Americans did all watch the same program regardless of who we were and where we came from, trusting Ed Sullivan to choose entertainment we *could* watch as a family.
So true! Fantastic music that still sounds great decades later. The skaters made no sense at all 😮
We had a limited number of TV channels.
Remember "Soul" on channel 13 with Ellis Haizlip???
@@roxanne5766 Those skaters? Ha, ha, that's Show Biz! I read that *everyone* had to wear skates, including the band! Apparently that singer JUST MADE IT onto the stage in time. :D /// PBS = Channel 13. You're a New Yorker. Wow, I *totally* forgot about that show. Thanks for mentioning it. I see they made a documentary about it. I'll have to check it out.

Excellent entertainment from back in the day! I am glad CZcams makes these performances available. It's great to listen to and reminisce.
Thank you for reuploading this. It was such a gem seeing a video of the original lineup of Rare Earth performing live.
Groovy! And far out...
This band is phenomenal. Incredible. What a voice. Loved to drive my Ford Fairlane 500 when this song was playing on my 8 track player with rear mounted speakers. Thank you, Rare Earth. Your music makes life better. I am a singer and love music, especially yours. ❤
A total groove😊
Now that's entertainment-just wild!
I have all the lp s and 45s they were an awesome band love their music till today and they were on Motown label
Saw them in 1979 in of all places a bar in Morgantown, WV-close up-they rocked playing extended versions of all their early hits!!
I have no idea how anyone can play drums and sing at the same time!
Don Brewer from Grand Funk, Peter Criss from Kiss, and yes, Pete Rivera from Rare Earth, just some examples
This sounds too good to be live. I can't believe they didn't go further.
Agree, I think that the vocals are live, but clearly the guitar is not. No wah pedal on stage, yet we hear the wah. Guitarist's chord/arm movements don't match what we are hearing. Likely bass and sax are also not live.
I wish this was live .
I miss the 70's and 80's most of all. 60's too but they were different.
I agree the 60s and 70s were the best. I miss those years a lot, but I try not to get depressed thinking of it. I just wanna think of the happy times.
When people and television were exciting, the newness of it all with the visuals, the sounds etc.. Before the internet this was how we got a very tiny taste of the world outside of our small town USA
So freaking talented the real deal and what a voice and singer. And he's a drummer at the same time which is so unusual
What a great song ❤
I feel the earth move under my feet! Greatest band ever!
Groovy!
This band was my first rock concert, I was 14 years old, had a great time
Great cover of a Motown hit!
Which was also a Motown hit! Berry Gordy signed these guys and created a record label named after them.
I saw them in concert here in Miami in 1971. They were recording the Rare Earth in concert double LP. Saw them at the Miami Marine Stadium
Wonderful seventies sound.
This is my favorite version of this song. Rod Stewart and Faces is second.
wow! very soulful and funky! i always knew the song i thought it was done by the temptations? rod stewart does a nice version of it too!
I saw them live at The Memorial Field House in Huntington WV in 1970.....I was 8. Its a long story of how an 8 yr old got in to a concert...but it was memorable
They were originally called the Sunliners from Detroit. These guys used to watch my father Mickey Denton perform in the sixties. My uncle Harry Balk from Motown was my father's manager.
Saw them live twice back in the day. Concerts were masterpieces :)
Rare Earth were sensational and I can attest to that after going to a concert to see them in the 70's as a teen in the DC area!

❤️
So happy this guy is still performing today!! Looks a little like Elvis, hey?
I like this! Really good!
Love it!!
My favorite cover!
Broadcast from the Baltimore Civic Center, much of this show featured skaters from "Holiday on Ice". It also featured Bobby Vinton and I'd love to see him sing "It's a Long Way to Tipperary" on this episode.
This is live, then, right? It just sounds too good to be live. Did they remaster this?
So band was on their ice ring ?
Thanks for that Tom. You answered my questions! Be well..
@@jonjohn8414 You're welcome!
Rock N Roll Hall of Fame !!!!!
Definitely this is a description of what 1960s psychedelic rock is.
Bands can't top that performance these days.
I gotta hand it to Ed Sullivan, he had a lot of the greatest rock bands of the time on his show.
Great song done by several great artists and groups.
I saw them in the mid 70's...the opening act was Billy Preston...pretty amazing!
The choreography is stunning and the costuming is Oscar-worthy. And, to put them on ice is pure genius! Hey Ed, how about just putting the performers out there and letting them do their thing. At least they didn't put one of those lava lamp kaleidoscope lenses on the camera -- that week, anyway.
The Temptations are bad ass but on this version for some reason maybe it’s the video but both of the versions just freaking rock…. Rare Earth vocals are on point!
Love the Faces version too… Such a great song.
I Live this Band! I got to see them in a pasture field when they played I Iowa! It was a bit drizzling and a little cold. I had a big box of the giant garbage bags and I shared with all who needed one. I met a girl around my age who was naked. That bag warmed her up and then we got into my car and I took her to safety. What a party it was in that field with all these bands playing!!!
Released as a single version of
I Know I'm Losing You.
Temptations did this great. Rare Earth went above and beyond with it.
This is amazing!
Love this song i’ve been playing this song a lot in 2022. and it’s the perfect song from the 70s to be played at a disco.
Cool😀
Drummer Lead Vocalist are Rare.
Don Henley, Phil Collins? Don't forget Ringo Starr, who developed exponentially circa 1969....

I seen them live years ago! You can't duplicate the sound on your stereo.
Back when I was a kid I didn't even know what rare earth's were.
Now they're in the phone I use along with the video.
Jesus, I never knew that the Ed Sullivan show had this psychedelia.....
Yes, it was a crazy time and i am glad I lived it...
Yah, but no Jesus
Probably one of the coolest jams those skaters ever got!!!
Again temptations I know I'm losing you version rare earths version of I know I'm losing you has a bit of a rock and roll sound to it
